Parks, Recreation & Forestry Directory

The Jefferson City Department of Parks, Recreation &

Forestry encourages people of all abilities to participate in the

programs and at the facilities we offer. If a program

modification will make an activity accessible for you, our staff

will be happy to speak with you individually, make the necessary

accommodations, and be sure that the on-site staff is familiar with

the situation. Please do not hesitate to let us know how we can

help you enjoy your leisure experience.

To provide a quality leisure experience for

everyone, we strive to make all programs as inclusive

and accessible as possible. However, we may not be

able to provide all requested accommodations for all

programs.

Gift Certificates

LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT GIFT?

How about a

Parks and Recreation

Gift Certificate?

Available at our office in the City

Annex, Parks and Recreation gift

certificates can be purchased for as little as

$5 and are good at any of our facilities or

toward the registration fee for any program.

THEY SPEND LIKE CASH AT ANY

PARKS AND RECREATION FACILITY!

If you have a golfer, skater, swimmer,

ball player, camper, or even a couch potato

who needs to get up and get active, what

would be a better gift?

Fragrance Free Policy

The Jefferson City Parks and Recreation

Commission respectfully requests and

encourages all patrons attending or

participating in any Parks and Recreation

meeting, special event, facility or program

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

Jefferson City is home to an award

winning Parks and Recreation

Department. As the capital city of

Missouri, maintaining our local parks and

recreation facilities and implementing

programs to meet the ever changing needs

of our community and its visitors is a

challenge.

The Jefferson City Parks and

Recreation Foundation strives to

provide additional resources to leverage

taxes, fees and grants to enhance our

parks and recreation services. Over

the years, civic minded individuals and

organizations have maintained a tradition

of enhancing the quality of life for their

families, friends, and neighbors through

generous donations to the Jefferson City

Parks and Recreation system.

In 1992, the Jefferson City Parks and

Recreation Foundation was formed to

provide continuing leadership and foster

the expansion of parks and recreation

services in Jefferson City. The

Foundation’s goal is to emphasize the

value of parks and recreation - both

passive and active - not only for individual

growth and development, but also for a

strong family unit and for making our

community a more desirable place to live,

work, play and visit.

If you believe, as we do, that

wholesome recreation pursuits make

individuals more productive in their homes

and communities and lead to a healthier

and happier life, please commit your

support to the Jefferson City Parks and

Recreation Foundation. Land, trees,

fountains, benches, shelters, activity fees

for youth programs are all gifts that can

make a difference in people’s lives. Any

and all size of gifts to our community

are appreciated and contribute to the

livability and quality of life of Jefferson

City.

For more information on how you can

make a tax deductible contribution of land,

money, or other gifts, please contact the

Foundation’s Executive Director William

Lockwood at 634-6482.

Jefferson City Parks & Recreation

Foundation As a recipient of federal funds from the

U.S. Department of the Interior, the

Jefferson City Parks and Recreation

Commission and the Jefferson City

Department of Parks and Recreation

operates programs subject to the non-

discrimination requirements of Title VI

of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Under Title

VI, the U.S. Department of the Interior

strictly prohibits discrimination because of

race, color, or national origin in its

federally assisted programs.

Any person who believes he or she has

been discriminated against in any

program or facility of the Jefferson City

Department of Parks and Recreation, or

desires further information regarding Title

VI, should write immediately to:

The Office for Equal Opportunity

U.S. Department of Interior

Office of the Secretary

Equal Opportunity

In any Parks and Recreation program, a

participant who is bleeding or who has

blood on his/her clothing shall be

prohibited from participating further in the

activity until appropriate treatment has been

administered.

Appropriate treatment may include

bandaging as necessary to prevent

recurrence.

This policy has been implemented to

protect the participants, coaches, staff, and

their families from diseases transported

through the accidental contact of tainted

blood. If medical care is needed, the

participant must leave the activity until the

problem situation has been resolved. A 70%

isopropyl alcohol solution must be used to

disinfect the skin and clothing. All infected

areas must be thoroughly cleaned before

this individual is allowed to continue

participating in the activity. This may

require that the player remove affected

clothing and replace it in order to be able to

continue participating.

All participants should bring an extra

shirt, pair of pants/shorts, and socks to each

activity to change into in the event a blood

incident should occur.

The Parks and Recreation Commission

believes that no youth should be denied

access to Parks and Recreation programs

for financial reasons.

The Parks and Recreation Foundation

makes recreation sponsorships available to

those who otherwise would not be able to

afford to participate in organized recreation

activities. Those seeking sponsorships will

be asked to complete a Recreation

Sponsorship Application Form available

through the Department of Parks and

Recreation.

Sponsorships are generally limited to

those receiving benefits from a form of

public assistance as designated on the

application form.

Sponsorship funding is limited to $200

per individual per calendar year and is

restricted to ongoing programs conducted

by Parks and Recreation staff. Specialized

programs of short duration conducted by

non-staff members (e.g. baseball clinics)

are ineligible for sponsorship funding.

All application forms requesting

funding for youth programs must be signed

by the parent/guardian of the prospective

participant. Participants/parents must pay a

minimum of 20% of the registration fee for

programs for which sponsorship assistance

is requested.

Questions concerning this service may

be directed to Phil Stiles at 634-6482.

Bleeding Policy

Sponsorships

The views of any program or activity

advertised within this guide and

sponsored by any organization other

than the Jefferson City Parks and

Recreation Department do not necessarily

reflect the views of the Jefferson

City Parks and Recreation Department.

Special Programs

The Jefferson City Special Olympics is a year round

sports training program for any Jefferson City resident sixteen

years of age and older, having disabilities because of cognitive

delays. Participation in Special Olympics provides people with

disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, to gain

self- confidence, build a more positive self-image and to form

friendships with other Special Olympians.

If you or someone you know is interested in participating in

one, several, or all of our sporting events, you simply need to

contact the Department of Parks and Recreation. Signing up

consists of completing a form designating the sports in which you

would like to participate, a medical information form and release

form. For more information on how you can get someone

involved, please contact Mike Bollinger at 634-6482.

Friday Night Recreation is a year round recreation program

for Cole and adjacent County residents with mental and/or

physical disabilities who are 15 years old or older. Family

members and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend any of

our activities.

Friday Night Recreation is co-sponsored by the Jefferson City

Department of Parks and Recreation and Cole County Residential

and tries to fill the leisure needs of our participants. Dances,

game nights, dinners, hayrides, bingo, movies, and nature

activities are some of the events we offer.

Anyone wanting to participate must pre-register before

attending any of the activities. Pre-registration consists of filling

out the registration/application form and returning it to the Parks

and Recreation office along with the registration fee. This form

includes a parent/guardian release, a brief medical history, and

emergency contact information.

Jefferson City Parks and Recreation and the Jefferson City Evening Lions sponsor a non-

competitive baseball league for Jefferson City area kids, ages 5-18, with physical and

developmental disabilities or other conditions that keep them from participating in regular

baseball leagues. Every kid bats and fields in each inning. Every child has a “baseball buddy”

to help him/her. The league is designed to help every kid, regardless of age or ability, be

successful and have fun! The league is currently forming and games will be played for six

weeks on Fridays in May - June starting at 6:30 p.m.

Participants register at Parks and Recreation. The registration fee is $25 which includes a

six game season and a uniform. Please register by March 28. Registration forms are available

at the Parks and Recreation office or on-line at www.jeffcitymo.org/parks. For more

information, contact Kerri Gates at 634-6524.

Volunteers Needed: The success of the program is dependent upon a large number of

volunteers to help out. Baseball buddies can be individuals or whole groups in the Jefferson

City area. Volunteering consists of helping a child during game play; catching, throwing,

batting and running. You can volunteer for one or all of the games, depending upon your

availability.

This year we’re revisiting some of our favorite themes, with a new twist! Science is in every aspect of our lives. It helps us uncover the

mysteries of times long ago and reach for the stars, as well as everything in between. We offer a unique learning experience that will

stimulate your child’s natural curiosity. Our inquiry-based activities use the scientific method to promote wonder, discovery and exploration

and also encourage problem-solving and critical thinking skills to engage and challenge children to create their own hypothesizes.

Our program is for children entering grades 2 - 6 in the fall. Pre-camp drop off begins at 7:45 a.m., camp activities run from 8:30 a.m.-

4:00 p.m., and post-camp activities are available until 5:00 p.m. Your child will need a sack lunch and snack. Kool-Aid will be provided.

Showdown is a totally unique theater camp designed with and

for teens, and led by working Hollywood professionals. We use the

performing arts as a way for teens to wake up to who they are,

discover who they can be, realize their personal power and change

into the person they choose to become.

Showdown Academy is an intensive, three week adventure into

theater for 6th graders and older. It begins with morning classes

where students study acting, directing, composing, stage movement,

musical theater, dance, stage craft and playwriting. Afternoons are

devoted to rehearsals for the full production.

Cindy Marcus, Flip Kobler and Dennis Poore are from Los

Angeles and are writing a new Totally Teen show for the teens of

Jefferson City. The teams' other Totally Teen shows: BROTHER'S

GRIMM, USHER, JECKYL AND HYDES, THE ARGONAUTS

and NOTTINGHAM have been published with Pioneer, the premiere

house for young people's theater.

Swim Lessons

Some levels may be combined due to low enrollment.

QUAL ITY , CONVEN IENCE , AND FUN ! Through a cooperative agreement with the American Red Cross, morning and evening group lessons are offered for all ability levels,

making it as convenient as possible for families with children of all ages. All instructors are American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors or

Water Safety Instructor Aids. Eight lessons are scheduled during a two or four week period. Lessons held Monday through Thursday each

week will have Friday as the built-in rain date and a four week session (M/W or T/TH) will have a built-in rain date the following week.

Parent Day for all classes will be the fourth day of lessons. Parents may participate in lessons on this day.

Students successfully completing the required skills will receive Red Cross certification. Repetition can be the key to

learning. Students often repeat a level several times before mastering the skills required for advancement. It is important for you and your

child to understand that repeating a level does not constitute failure. Mastering skills takes time, practice and patience.

HIKING AND BIKING

Have you heard the word ‘greenway' and wondered what

it means or what it is? The term ‘greenway' is synonymous

with the wide ‘sidewalk' or linear park running through

Jefferson City near Wears Creek. A Greenway system

includes small strips of land, typically beside a road or stream,

and parcels of land maintained in a natural condition where

development is limited. Pathways for public use connect the

strips and blocks of land.

The greenway is a multi-use trail designed to provide a

safe alternative to walk, jog, bike, or skate away from busy

city streets. There are approximately 14.4 miles of greenway

trail throughout Jefferson City providing additional

opportunities for outdoor recreation, relaxation and

enjoyment. See the inset box to the right for specific trail

sections and lengths.

The greenway trail system is always expanding by

connecting parks, neighborhoods, schools and businesses

throughout the city.

If you would like more information on the Jefferson City

Greenway, if you have ideas on where or how the greenway

should be extended, or if your organization or neighborhood

can provide volunteer labor or funding, contact the Parks and

Recreation office. We are always working to make Jefferson

City a nicer place to live.

Future Greenway Development Bid and Construction Phase:

Ellis Porter/Riverside Park to the Lewis and Clark State

Office Building. This section is currently under

construction and will add approximately .7 of a mile to

the overall Greenway Trail System. Look for this section

to be completed spring 2012.

Leslie/Stadium/Lafayette round-a-bout through Aurora

Neighborhood Park. Construction of this 1.1 mile

addition is scheduled for the spring and summer

2012. This new section will expand along the east

branch of Wears Creek and will connect Aurora Park,

residential neighborhoods, the Knowles YMCA and

Jefferson City Public School property with the existing

greenway trail through Lincoln University campus and

Community Park to East McCarty Street.

JEFFERSON CITY GREENWAY TRAIL SYSTEM

If you are a mountain bike enthusiast, check out the 13.5 miles of

trail throughout Binder Park and the two miles of trail near the West

Edgewood Greenway (access near the West Edgewood Drive parking

lot). These trails offer fun for all ages and ability levels. These trails are

designed for non-motorized vehicles - ATV's and motorcycles are

prohibited. All the mountain bike trails are designed and maintained by a

trained local volunteer club. Feel free to e-mail [email protected] for

more mountain bike trail information or volunteer opportunities.
