Kau e ka wena o ke ao i ka laniThe announcement of dawn appears as a glowing streak upon the heavens,

He wekeweke i ka pö pilipukaIt is a narrow opening in the darkness heralding the day,

He ‘elele o ka poniponi hikinaIt is a messenger of purple glimmer from the east.

Kau ke kähe‘a wana‘ao i ka ‘äla‘apapaStreaks of red stain long cloud formations,

La‘i ana i luna o ke kükulu o ka lani läReposing serenely upon the pillars holding up the heavens;

‘O ka‘u ia e huli alo nei i ka ulu ëI turn to gaze upon this, focusing on growth and the rising of a new day,

‘Ae, ua ao ë.Yes, day has arrived.

Hö mai lä kö mälamalamaBestow upon us your radiant light

Keynote Address

Billy Kenoi

Mayor, County of Hawai‘i

Mayor Billy Kenoi was born in the village of Kalapana, on beautiful Hawai‘i Island. He attended Hawai‘i Community College and UH Hilo before receiving his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he was a proud member of the UMASS Political Science Honor Society.

Billy went on to get his Law Degree from UH Mänoa’s William S. Richardson School of Law and was selected to deliver the commencement speech for his graduating class. He later served as a Deputy Defender in the District, Family and Felony Trial Division and went on to successfully serve as an Executive Assistant to Mayor Harry Kim from 2001 to 2007.

In 2007, the Mayor was recognized by Hawai‘i Business Magazine as one of “25 people who will shape Hawai‘i over the next 25 years.” A year later he was elected mayor of the County of Hawai‘i in his first run for public office at the age of 39, making him one of the youngest mayors in the history of Hawai‘i County.

Mayor Kenoi is married to Takako Kenoi, his college sweetheart, and they are blessed with three children – Liam (12), Justin (10) and Mahina (8). The Kenoi Family calls the Volcano area home.

Student AddressLa‘akea Yoshida

Bachelor of Arts in History

La‘akea Yoshida, with a minor in anthropology, is our 2009 student speaker. With a cumulative 3.8 GP, Yoshida has earned numerous academic honors, including the CAS Dean’s Scholarship, the CAS Dean’s List, the first-ever UH Hilo Ambassador Grant, the Vulcan Leadership Award for Outstanding Scholar, the UH Hilo History Department’s Outstanding Student Writing Award, Kamehameha Schools’ Na Ho‘okama a Pauahi Scholarship, and he is named in Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities.

President of the UH Hilo Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, Yoshida’s paper, “Bloodline Accession and Gifted Power: Nero Claudius Drusus and the Struggle to Define Heirship in Rome during the Reign of Tiberius,” was voted Best Undergraduate Paper at a regional conference held in Mänoa. It was the second time Yoshida captured that award after first winning it in 2008.

Yoshida is scheduled to enter Oxford University in October as a Master of Philosophy candidate in Roman and Greek history. He is believed to be the first History major from UH Hilo ever admitted to the prestigious United Kingdom institution.

Chancellor’s Message

A TIME OF CELEBRATION

Congratulations to our Spring 2010 Graduates!

My heartfelt congratulations are extended to the spring 2010 graduates and their families.

As each of you await recognition and confirmation of your degree, it's a wonderful time to reflect

upon your personal story (mo‘olelo) as well as our collective history.

The ceremonial walk is really a metaphor for your personal pilgrimage, your history and your

journey that provides the momentum for the next chapter in your life. Under every cap and gown

in this room, there is a mo‘olelo of experiences, challenges, events and achievements that have

culminated in this moment. We are here today to celebrate your journey and your mo‘olelo.

We join your ‘ohana, friends, mentors and our esteemed faculty in celebrating your story and your

success. Each and every graduate today deserves applause for reaching this important milestone.

During your time here, our university has also grown, changed and overcome challenges right

along with you. UH Hilo has truly come into its own as a full-fledged comprehensive university

with a reputation for academic quality and service to community that extends beyond our shores.

I commend our UH Hilo ‘ohana for all the hard work that brought our university to where we are

today.

While commencement is always a time for celebration, this year takes on special meaning for me.

I will be stepping down as UH Hilo's chancellor this summer, and the future will hold new and

different challenges for me. I am very proud to have been UH Hilo's chancellor for the past 12

years, which have been some of the most rewarding of my life.

Congratulations and warmest aloha!

Rose Tseng

Chancellor

Alumni Message

Dear May 2010 Graduates,

Congratulations! On behalf of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Alumni and Friends Association,

I want to commend you on this important academic achievement. As you reflect back on the

knowledge you have acquired and your personal and academic experiences, please always remember

that not only have you received a quality education, but you have also in many ways left your mark

on our beautiful campus and institution.

As you leave UH Hilo and pursue other endeavors, whether graduate school, immediate employment

or other post-graduate experiences, we hope that you will stay connected to this university through

membership in the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Alumni and Friends Association. Your success is

our success, and we want to hear about your future accomplishments and also solicit your ongoing

input and feedback that will help us continue to grow and prosper in the years ahead. Through our

Alumni & Friends Association, you will receive many important benefits, and be able to network

with fellow alumni to keep informed about the campus and the community.

Despite our national, state and global economic challenges that are affecting the job market, you

are armed with a degree from a prestigious university that is sure to open doors and lead to many

exciting opportunities for you in the years ahead. Your professors and other mentors are proud of

your achievements, and join with us in wishing you good health, happiness and continued success in

whatever path you choose for your future.

Best wishes & aloha,

Carol A. VanCamp

President, UH Hilo Alumni & Friends Association

A Message from the Student Association President

Kelson T. Ho‘omano Pakele President University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Student Association

Pulelo ke ahi ha‘aheo i na pali. The Firebrand soars proudly over the cliffs.

An expression of triumph.

-‘olelo no‘eau

In everything that we do we strive to achieve success. We hope to become the best in everything

we do, to be the best we can be. No one settles for the bronze or silver. No one sets their goals at

being just, okay. When we reach, we reach beyond the mountains, above the clouds that seem so

distant, so far away.

We are the trailblazers; we are the pioneers of our own success and stand proud because we seek

to initiate change for the better. Like Hawai‘i's volcanic glow, we shine proudly because it is who

we are and all we know how to be.

Strike a match and set the path ablaze. Surf the lava flow to the volcanoes peak and never stop

dreaming, reach for the stars. Never forget that even though we may have a few stars in our

pockets, the universe is still ours for the taking.

The Star-Spangled BannerPoem by Francis Scott Key Music by John Stafford Smith

Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early lightWhat so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.Oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Hawai‘i Pono‘iMusic by Henri Berger Lyrics by David Kaläkaua
