SUMMER AND EARLY FALL RECAP

My constituency staff and volunteers are happy to serve! Standing, left to right: Anad Chhina, Kevin Tatla, Eamanjot Braich, Avi Lail. Sitting: Seamus Heffernan.

What a busy summer—thank you for welcoming me to numerous events around our beautiful riding! From Canada Day Celebrations, roundtables, the Abbotsford Air Show, our first annual family barbeque (pictured above) and more, I had a wonderful summer meeting with many of you. I was able to hear your concerns, and I’m looking forward to taking them back to Ottawa and representing you!

Dear Constituents, It has been an honour to serve as your Member of Parliament in Ottawa for the past year. It is a distinct pleasure to represent such a vast and diverse riding, one that I am proud to call home. This newsletter is dedicated to what my summer and early fall in the constituency looked like. I also had the honour of representing our riding in Guatemala and Colombia on a Foreign Affairs and International Development Committee mission. It was a busy but very rewarding summer, and I am humbled to be back in Ottawa to share your concerns within the House of Commons for the fall session. I am here to represent your interests, and to be a voice for your concerns. On the back of this newsletter you will find contact information for my offices in Ottawa and Mission. There is also a form you can fill out and submit to me in Ottawa to detail what issues matter to you. I have received many of these from the previous newsletter, and encourage you to continue sending them. I look forward to meeting you in the riding as well to hear about the issues that are most important to you. Please do not hesitate to contact my office at any time with any federal issue that is important to you. My staff and I would be pleased to assist you.

Thank you,

Jati

I packed a bag of school supplies for Ashcroft Elementary School. This event also supported students in Fort McMurray.

At our duo-town hall on electoral reform and climate change, we heard from an informed and engaged public who had many questions—including some that were very challenging! Thanks to all who came out to make the event a success. A special thanks to Dr. Hamish Telford of UFV for fielding questions on different voting systems across the world. Attendees’ suggestions have been recorded and will be submitted for the Special Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reform for their consideration.

As a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, I was proud to participate in a whirlwind, information-packed 12-day mission through Guatemala and Colombia. The purpose of the trip was to evaluate Canada’s relationship with Guatemala and Colombia in relation to development cooperation and women’s rights and empowerment. During meetings and field visits, the Committee heard from many local leaders and stakeholders to hear their ideas, concerns and feedback.

Investments In local businesses

Delighted to join Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay to announce the federal government will be investing $10 million into local dairy company Vitalus. Great to see Mayor Henry Braun, councilors, and Mike de Jong there too! Minister MacAulay and I are both farmers, and it was great to have the chance to catch up. I had the pleasure of welcoming him to my home where he met with local berry farmers. We also visited with Dave Janzen, Chair of the Chicken Farmers of Canada Board of Directors.

Big Boost for Mission and Abbotsford Public Transit

I was genuinely thrilled to announce a $28 million boost for local transit infrastructure. For Abbotsford and Mission, this means the addition of modern buses with improved technology, including closed circuit TV to improve the safety of passengers and drivers, real-time information for accuracy and precision, and automatic passenger counters that will enable BC Transit to optimize service.

First Nation Roundtables

During the election campaign, I promised to connect and collaborate with the First Nation people in our riding. I was therefore very excited to host two roundtables in one very busy day. First, we were at Xwísten for the morning and then hit the road to visit Sts’ailes in the afternoon. We had outstanding dialogue with

various First Nation leaders from all across the riding, and much spirited debate covering a wide range of issues. A big “thank you” to my friend and colleague Yvonne Jones, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, for joining us. This was an opportunity for me and the Parliamentary Secretary to listen to the concerns of Indigenous peoples in the riding and to take them to Ottawa.

Abbotsford Agrifair: a local tradition

I was invited to be one of the opening speakers for this year’s Abbotsford Agrifair, which truly is “the Best Little Country Fair on Earth!” As a former farmer, this event is always near and dear for me (plus, it’s always a great excuse for me to break out one of my cowboy hats). This year’s Agrifair had a lot of new attractions as well, including go-karts and amusement park rides to keep the crowd spinning well into the night!

Battle of Britain Commemoration I was proud to lay a wreath on behalf of the federal government at the 76th anniversary of the Battle of Britain event in Abbotsford. As Churchill famously said of those who served during the Blitz: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."

Classic Car Show in Lillooet Joining me in getting my classic car fix at the Route 99 Show & Shine in Lillooet were Mayor Marg Lampman (on my immediate left), and Councillors Kevin Aitken and Laurie Hopfl (on my right). Also pictured is Jacquie Rasmussen, our Northern Constituency Coordinator.

Our own Kevin Tatla, Immigration Specialist at our Mission office, raised over $800 by jumping out of a plane for the Cyrus Centre’s seventh annual Leap of Faith skydiving event. Cyrus Centre is a non-profit organization that provides support to vulnerable and homeless youth, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. If you would like to get involved, you can reach them on (604) 859-5773. Way to go, Kevin!
