Nov 23, 2003 - Mar 17, 2012

After a valiant battle with Lymphosarcoma,Cairo has joined Tjra and Madey at the bridge.

Cairo was always a dog who overcame. He handled all that life threw at him with a true dignity. He lived his life with total abandon, always giving the moment 110% and

consequences be damned. He maintained that attitude until the very end.

Godspeed our precious angel. You are missed more than you can imagine.

GSPCC Booster at Purina National March 10, 2012

We would like to thank all the club members, their puppy owners and other GSP owners/enthusiasts who supported the club’s Booster show at the Purina National with such an outstanding entry. This is the third year in a row that our club has participated in this annual

CKC Charity Event. And each year the support for the breed increases.

Our club also participated with a 3-day booth at the Breeders’ Village. Many thanks to members Heather Brennan, Emily and Rob MacKinnon and Tammy Paris for all the hours spent at the booth. Our breed greatly benefits from the exposure to the public that attends this yearly CKC

event.

Mult i Laboratory D NA Health C l in ic !

The German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Canada will be holding a

DNA health clinic at our Regional Specialty show in Calgary, Alberta the weekend of August 3-6, 2012. Testing to be done will be for Lupoid

Dermatosis, Cone Degeneration and vonWillebrands.

Kits will be available at the show grounds which will include any discount

codes that are applicable. Each kit will include swabs, order forms and disposable gloves. A microchip scanner will also be used to verify the ID

for OFA purposes if you wish to send in your results.

Leah will be at the Alberta GSP Regional Specialty show and will have these kits with her for each type of DNA test. For the vWD and the CD

tests, the samples must all be submitted together in a pre-paid envelope the lab will be sending to Leah. If you wish to do the tests for dogs not at the show, please contact Leah and she will send you the test kits and they

can then be returned to her for proper mailing to the lab. However, timing

is crucial so a swift return of the completed tests is necessary.

Please contact Leah before July 15, 2012 if you are interested in testing a dog so that she can make sure to have enough available. Leah will also be

more than happy to help with the testing if you need an extra hand!

SPREAD THE WORD SO THAT WE CAN HAVE A SUCCESSFUL CLINIC !

Lupoid Dermatosis

German shorthaired pointers

(GSPs) that are affected with

exfoliative cutaneous lupus

erythematosus (ECLE, also

known as lupoid dermatosis)

have an unusual amount of

scales (dandruff) and later

scabs and skin crusts that be-

gin on the face, ears and back

and then move on to involve

the whole body. The extent of

the skin lesions can become

quite severe and the skin’s

barrier function is no longer

intact. This leads to frequent

skin infections resulting in

even worse disease. As the

disease progresses, many of

the affected dogs will be lame

on one or more legs and stand

with their backs arched like

they are trying to walk on egg

shells. We have also found

that kidney disease develops

in affected dogs, as they grow

older, just like in people with

lupus erythematosus. Many

of the affected GSPs are

euthanized before they reach

the age of 4 years

because of the pain and poor

quality of life.

Price for test is $75 per dog.

A discount may apply pending

approval from U. of Penn.

2 cheek swabs are taken per

dog.

Cone Degeneration

CD disease causes day blind-

ness due to degeneration of

the retinal “cones” - cone-

shaped cells in the retina that

respond primarily to bright

daylight. CD can be diag-

nosed in the early weeks of

the affected dog’s life. Be-

tween 8 and 12 weeks of age,

when retinal development is

normally completed in dogs,

signs of vision problems are

noticeable. The pups become

day-blind and are photophobic

- meaning that exposure to

bright light is irritating or

even painful. The pup will

shun bright-lit areas. Vision

in dim light remains normal.

The retina of the affected dog

initially appears normal when

examined by an ophthalmolo-

gist and initially the ERG

(electroretinogram) recording

is normal. However, the ERG

response from the degenerat-

ing cones declines with age

and is non-recordable in the

mature CD-affected dog.

Regular price of the test is

$165 per dog. If a minimum

of 20 dogs are tested, a 20%

discount will be applied.

Sample can now be done with

2 cheek swabs per dog.

vonWillebrands

Von Willebrand’s disease has

been identified in a wide

range of canine breeds, and is

the most common of the in-

herited bleeding disorders.

As with humans, there are

three classifications of this

disease, Types I, II and III.

These are based on the con-

centration and nature of

plasma vWF. Type II vWD is

characterized by structurally

abnormal vWF, which

impedes function and results

in severe bleeding in affected

animals. The disease has been

reported in many breeds of

dogs, and is generally diag-

nosed by an ELISA test for

plasma VWF following a

bleeding event.

The Vetgen vWD type II test

identifies the presence of this

mutation and designates the

tested dog as either clear, car-

rier, or affected for the dis-

ease.

Regular price of test is $140

per dog. If a minimum of $25

dogs are tested, the price is

reduced to $75 per dog.

3 cheek swabs are taken per

dog.
