This Sunday, we celebrate Epiphany, when the Magi visit the Christ child. Who are the Magi? To track down the Magi, we look to the East. The Magi came from the region around ancient Media, Persia, Assyria, and Babylonia. This area is now present day Iran and Iraq. The Magi come from the Medes, who first began to settle in Mesopotamia around 900 BC. The ancient Greek historian Herodotus tells us that the Magi is a name of the royal priestly order of the Medes. They were the sacred rulers of ancient Mesopotamia and their religion continued to hold sway throughout the region despite the change of many empires. The Medes were conquered by the Assyrian Empire around 800 BC. After the fall of the Assyrian Empire, around 626 BC, the Babylonian Empire ruled in this area. The Median kingdom in the Babylonian Empire was eventually conquered by the Persian king Cyrus the Great, around 539 BC, who established the Persian Empire. The Persian Empire was conquered by the Macedonians, led by Alexander the Great around 336 BC. The Macedonian conqueror left their native rule largely intact. Following the unexpected death of Alexander the Great at a young

age, around 321 BC, the Macedonian Empire was divided among his generals. Seluecus ruled over most of the eastern part of the empire. Around 240 BC, the satraps of the area of Parthia began grow independent from Seleucid king. The Parthian Empire conquered and expanded, seizing Media and Mesopotamia from the Seleucid Empire. The Parthians ruled the area at the time of the birth of Christ. Despite the many changes of rulers and empires, the Magi maintained their ruling function and influence throughout the area of Persia.

The Magi come from this area in the east. What does the word magi mean? Magi is a Greek word that is actually the plural form for the singular magos. Magos (or Magi) had a variety of meanings in Greek. First, it means a member of the priestly class of ancient Persia, where astrology and astronomy were prominent in ancient times. Second, it means a person who had knowledge and was adept at dream interpretation, astrology, divination, and spiritual mediation. Third, it means a magician. From these possible definitions and the description provided in the gospel, most scholars believe that the magi were probably priest-astrologers, who could interpret the stars, particularly the significance of the star that proclaimed the birth of the Messiah.

The religion of the Magi seems to have been heavily influenced by the dispersion of the Israelites throughout Persia, after the destruction of their Northern Kingdom by the Assyrians around 722 BC. The Magi believed in an all-powerful Creator-God, Who is also addressed as an intimate friend, Who loves justice and hates iniquity, Who rewards good and punishes evil. Although these truths were also mixed with certain pagan errors, the Magi Kings enforced a high moral code and their rule was benevolent and just. At the time of the Birth of Christ, there was a general unrest and expectation of a Great Deliverer in the ancient world. The Magi were familiar with the great Messianic prophesies, particularly Jewish prophecies regarding the Messiah, since there were large numbers of Israelites living in Babylon and throughout the territory of Persia at the time when Christ was born. The Magi looked forward to a Messiah, Who would appear. The Magi understood that the Star that appeared in the heavens was the sign that the long awaited Messiah had finally come!

Este domingo celebramos la Epifanía, cuando los Reyes Magos visitan al Niño Jesús. ¿Quiénes son los Magos? Para buscar a los Magos, miramos hacia el este. Los Magos procedían de la región de los antiguos, Media, Per-sia, Asiria y Babilonia. Esta zona es hoy día Irán e Irak. Los Magos provienen de los Medos, que comenzaron a establecerse en Mesopotamia alrededor de 900 A.C. El historiador griego Herodoto nos dice que Mago era nombre de la orden real sacerdotal de los Medos. Eran los gobernantes sagrados de la antigua Mesopotamia y su religión continuaba dominando toda la región a pesar del cambio de muchos imperios. Los Medos fueron conquistados por el Imperio Asirio alrededor de 800 A.C. Después de la caída del Imperio Asirio alrededor de 626 A.C., el Imperio Babilónico gobernó en esta área. Obchodzimy dzisiaj Święto Trzech Króli – Trzej Królowie (Mędrcy, Magowie) składają hołd Dzieciątku Jezus. Trzej Mędrcy pochodzili ze Wschodu, z terenów starożytnej Persji, Asyrii i Babilonii, czyli dzisiejszego Iraku i Iranu. Trzej Królowie należeli do plemienia Medów, które około 900 roku przed naszą erą osiedliło się na terenie Mezopotamii. Według greckiego historyka Herodota, przymiotnik „Magowie” (Magi) pochodzi od nazwy potężnego rodu królów-kapłanów. Przedstawiciele tego rodu oraz wiara którą głosili, zachowali znaczne wpływy w regionie pomimo upadku kolejnych imperiów. W roku 800 p.n.e., Medowie zostali podbici przez Asyryjczyków. Około roku 626 p.n.e., miejsce pokonanych Asyryjczyków zajęli Babilończycy. Będące częścią Babilonii królestwo Medów zostało w roku 539 p.n.e. podbite przez Cyrusa Wielkiego – założyciela imperium perskiego. Z kolei Persów pokonał około roku 336 p.n.e. Aleksander III Macedoński. Macedończycy przeważnie pozostawiali rodzimych perskich władców w spokoju. Po nagłej śmierci młodego Aleksandra w 321 p.n.e., zdobyte przez niego ziemie podzielili między siebie jego generałowie, wskutek czego wschodnią

częścią imperium władał Seleukos. W 240 p.n.e., satrapowie Partii wypowiedzieli posłuszeństwo Seleucydom i zaczęli rozszerzać swoje wpływy. W końcu zajęli Medię i Mezopotamię. To Partowie byli u władzy kiedy narodził się Chrystus. Magowie przybyli ze Wschodu. Określenie „Magowie” wzięło się od greckiego słowa: „Magi” (liczba mnoga; liczba pojedyncza: „Magos”), mającego różne znaczenie. Po pierwsze, owe słowo oznacza członków kasty kapłańskiej w starożytnej Persji, znakomitych astronomów i astrologów. Po drugie, Magi były osobami biegłymi w sztuce medytacji, interpretacji snów, czy odczytywania przypowieści. Po trzecie, słowo to oznacza dosłownie maga. W oparciu o te definicje oraz tekst Ewangelii, wielu uczonych doszło do wniosku, iż Trzej Królowie byli po prostu kapłanami i astrologami, którzy potrafili odczytywać ruchy gwiazd i ich znaczenie, w szczególności znaczenie Gwiazdy Betlejemskiej, wieszczącej nadejście Mesjasza. Wydaje się, iż na wyznawaną przez Magów wiarę miało rozproszenie się Izraelitów po całej Persji po tym, jak w roku 722 p.n.e. Asyryjczycy zniszczyli Północne Królestwo. Magowie wierzyli w istnienie wszechmocnego Boga-Stworzyciela, do którego zwracali się jak do najlepszego przyjaciela. W Boga miłującego sprawiedliwość, a gardzącego nieprawością. W Boga, Który za dobre wynagradza, a za złe karze. Chociaż w tych wierzeniach znajdowały się też pewne pogańskie elementy, władcy Magów narzucili poddanym surowy kodeks moralny i spokojne, sprawiedliwe rządy. Kiedy Jezus miał się narodzić, w całym starożytnym świecie panował niepokój i oczekiwanie na pojawienie się Zbawiciela. Jako że w tamtym czasie Persję i Babilon zamieszkiwała znaczna liczba Izraelitów, Magowie dobrze znali żydowskie przepowiednie o nadejściu Mesjasza i czekali na to wydarzenie. Dlatego też Magowie od razu zrozumieli, co oznaczało pojawienie się Gwiazdy na niebie. Bóg Zapłać za Waszą hojność oraz wsparcie okazywane Parafii w okresie bożonarodzeniowym. Niech Bóg Wam błogosławi! LADIES OF THE ROSARY NEWS BEADS ... Monthly Mass The Ladies of the Rosary gather on the first Sunday of the month at the 7:30 a.m. Mass to attend Mass as a group. All ladies of the parish are invited to attend and celebrate with the group. January Meeting There is no January meeting for the Ladies of the Rosary. Instead, join them for Hawaii in January.
