Introduction

Welcome to this third edition of the Daily Office Prayer book.

Inside this book we have put together a range of worship which can be done

at home either with your family, or on your own. In this edition we have

included worship for the Advent, Christmas and Epiphany seasons. You need

to continue to use the Ordinary time version of the daily prayer book until

29th November where you begin to use the options for Advent, this will

change on Christmas Day to the Christmas Season, and then 6th January to

Epiphany Season.

Again we haven't added all the options into each service to keep it as easy to

use as possible, however you have daily elements. Please take note of the

rubrics that look like this, as they are your guide for each section of the service.

You will sometimes find some other things in the service, e.g. :

...all you who pass by? ♦

Where you find a diamond, this is an indication to give brief pause before

continuing

…Son laid down his life: R

Where you see an : R, this is an indication that you should repeat the Refrain

that was at the beginning of that section.

In the morning prayer services the text refers to the ‘Lectionary’ where you

can get your psalms and readings, this can be found at the back of this book.

In the Prayer during the day and compline the services give you a selection of

readings that you can use.

Please note that there are no lectionary readings for Sundays, but you can

tune into our Holy Communion service on our Website, Facebook page,

YouTube and if you don’t have the internet and need a DVD copy, please let

us know.

We hope that this will encourage you in your daily prayers. Please do

continue to use our daily cycle of prayer, pray for everyone in The Benefice of

Littleborough, Manchester Diocese, as well as the world. As we as one

community of pray for the end of this situation, and the time when we can be

reunited with those who we for a season are parted from.

With my Prayers for you all

God Bless, Fr Ian.

Our Benefice Prayer

Heavenly Father,

send your Holy Spirit

to give vision in our planning,

wisdom to our actions,

and grace through our witness,

as we seek to serve you as a Benefice

in Sharing Christ with Littleborough

Amen

Manchester Diocesan Prayer

in a Time of Crisis

O Living God, beloved Father of all,

your love and faithfulness was shown

when you led your pilgrim people

through the waters of the Red Sea,

and in your Son you brought us home

as beloved children in your family.

In this time of trial, crisis and fear,

help us, your pilgrim people

in the Diocese of Manchester,

to trust in your abundant love and grace.

Teach us to pray for and to serve

our communities in this different world

in which we are now set.

Through your Guiding Spirit,

unite us in hope, faith and truth;

equip us to serve and pray,

to reach out to those in greatest need,

and be assured that in all times -

in times of little and of much,

in times of fear and of hope -

your Son always goes ahead,

revealing to us the Way of Love.

Amen.

Morning Prayer (Advent)

Preparation O Lord, open our lips

and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Reveal among us the light of your presence

that we may behold your power and glory.

Blessed are you, Sovereign God of all,

to you be praise and glory for ever.

In your tender compassion

the dawn from on high is breaking upon us

to dispel the lingering shadows of night.

As we look for your coming among us this day,

open our eyes to behold your presence

and strengthen our hands to do your will,

that the world may rejoice and give you praise.

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God for ever.

A Song of the King’s Glory 1 The earth is the Lord’s and all that fills it, ♦

the compass of the world and all who dwell therein.

2 For he has founded it upon the seas ♦

and set it firm upon the rivers of the deep.

3 ‘Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord, ♦

or who can rise up in his holy place?’

4 ‘Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, ♦

who have not lifted up their soul to an idol,

nor sworn an oath to a lie;

5 ‘They shall receive a blessing from the Lord, ♦

a just reward from the God of their salvation.’

6 Such is the company of those who seek him, ♦

of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.

7 Lift up your heads, O gates;

be lifted up, you everlasting doors; ♦

and the King of glory shall come in.

8 ‘Who is the King of glory?’ ♦

‘The Lord, strong and mighty,

the Lord who is mighty in battle.’

9 Lift up your heads, O gates;

be lifted up, you everlasting doors; ♦

and the King of glory shall come in.

10 ‘Who is this King of glory?’ ♦

‘The Lord of hosts,

he is the King of glory.’

Psalm 24 Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and shall be for ever. Amen.

This opening prayer may be said The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;

let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,

so may the light of your presence, O God,

set our hearts on fire with love for you;

now and for ever.

Amen.

as it was in the beginning is now:

and shall be for ever. Amen.

Canticle

Refrain:

Lift up your voice with strength,

O herald of good tidings.

1 The wilderness and the dry land shall rejoice, ♦

the desert shall blossom and burst into song.

2 They shall see the glory of the Lord, ♦

the majesty of our God.

3 Strengthen the weary hands, ♦

and make firm the feeble knees.

4 Say to the anxious, ‘Be strong, fear not,

your God is coming with judgement, ♦

coming with judgement to save you.’

5 Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, ♦

and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

6 Then shall the lame leap like a hart, ♦

and the tongue of the dumb sing for joy.

and streams in the desert;

Page 7: Daily Offices Prayer Book Advent - Epiphany Congregation Prayer Book v.3.pdf · Daily Offices Prayer Book Advent - Epiphany The Benefice of Littleborough St Barnabas, Shore Holy Trinity,

8 The ransomed of the Lord shall return with singing, ♦

with everlasting joy upon their heads.

9 Joy and gladness shall be theirs, ♦

and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Isaiah 35.1, 2b-4a, 4c-6, 10 Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and shall be for ever. Amen.

Refrain:

Lift up your voice with strength,

O herald of good tidings.

If there are two Scripture readings, the second may be read here,

or both may be read together.

The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence and reflection. Now it is time to awake out of sleep,

for the night is far spent and the day is at hand.

Now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed,

for the night is far spent.

Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness

and put on the armour of light,

for the day is at hand.

Put on the Lord Jesus Christ

and make no provision for the flesh,

for the night is far spent and the day is at hand.

The Collect of the day or the following is said Almighty God,

give us grace to cast away the works of darkness

and to put on the armour of light,

now in the time of this mortal life,

in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility;

that on the last day,

when he shall come again in his glorious majesty

to judge the living and the dead,

we may rise to the life immortal;

through him who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Awaiting his coming in glory, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Conclusion May the Lord, when he comes,

find us watching and waiting.

Amen.

Let us bless the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Morning Prayer (Christmas)

Preparation O Lord, open our lips

and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

You laid the foundation of the earth

and the heavens are the work of your hands.

Blessed are you, sovereign God,

creator of heaven and earth,

to you be praise and glory for ever.

As your living Word, eternal in heaven,

assumed the frailty of our mortal flesh,

may the light of your love be born in us

to fill our hearts with joy as we sing:

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God for ever.

A Song of the Bride 1 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, ♦

my soul shall exult in my God;

2 Who has clothed me with the garments of salvation, ♦

and has covered me with the cloak of integrity,

3 As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, ♦

and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

4 For as the earth puts forth her blossom, ♦

and as seeds in the garden spring up,

5 So shall God make righteousness and praise ♦

blossom before all the nations.

6 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, ♦

and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest

7 Until her deliverance shines out like the dawn, ♦

and her salvation as a burning torch.

Page 13: Daily Offices Prayer Book Advent - Epiphany Congregation Prayer Book v.3.pdf · Daily Offices Prayer Book Advent - Epiphany The Benefice of Littleborough St Barnabas, Shore Holy Trinity,

8 The nations shall see your deliverance, ♦

and all rulers shall see your glory;

9 Then you shall be called by a new name ♦

which the mouth of God will give.

10 You shall be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, ♦

a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

Isaiah 61.10,11; 62.1-3 Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and shall be for ever. Amen.

to us a son is given.

1 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; ♦

those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,

they rejoiced before you as with joy at the harvest.

3 For you have shattered the yoke that burdened them; ♦

the collar that lay heavy on their shoulders.

4 For to us a child is born and to us a son is given, ♦

and the government will be upon his shoulder.

5 And his name will be called: Wonderful Counsellor;

the Mighty God; ♦

6 Of the increase of his government and of peace ♦

there will be no end,

the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

An Order for Night Prayer for Advent (Compline)

Note The ancient office of Compline derives its name from a Latin word meaning

‘completion’ (completorium). It is above all a service of quietness and

reflection before rest at the end of the day. It is most effective when the

ending is indeed an ending, without additions, conversation or noise. If there

is an address, or business to be done, it should come first. If the service is in

church, those present depart in silence; if at home, they go quietly to bed.

Preparation

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord

who made heaven and earth.

A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow.

Most merciful God,

we confess to you,

before the whole company of heaven and one another,

that we have sinned in thought, word and deed

and in what we have failed to do.

Forgive us our sins,

heal us by your Spirit

and raise us to new life in Christ.

Amen.

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and shall be for ever. Amen.

Alleluia.

Hymn

Before the ending of the day,

Creator of the world, we pray

That you, with steadfast love, would keep

Your watch around us while we sleep.

From evil dreams defend our sight,

From fears and terrors of the night;

Tread underfoot our deadly foe

That we no sinful thought may know.

O Father, that we ask be done

Through Jesus Christ, your only Son;

And Holy Spirit, by whose breath

Our souls are raised to life from death.

The Word of God

Psalmody

Psalm 91

1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High ♦

and abides under the shadow of the Almighty,

2 Shall say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my stronghold, ♦

my God, in whom I put my trust.’

3 For he shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler ♦

and from the deadly pestilence.

4 He shall cover you with his wings

and you shall be safe under his feathers; ♦

his faithfulness shall be your shield and buckler.

5 You shall not be afraid of any terror by night, ♦

nor of the arrow that flies by day;

6 Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, ♦

nor of the sickness that destroys at noonday.

Page 38: Daily Offices Prayer Book Advent - Epiphany Congregation Prayer Book v.3.pdf · Daily Offices Prayer Book Advent - Epiphany The Benefice of Littleborough St Barnabas, Shore Holy Trinity,

38

7 Though a thousand fall at your side

and ten thousand at your right hand, ♦

yet it shall not come near you.

8 Your eyes have only to behold ♦

to see the reward of the wicked.

9 Because you have made the Lord your refuge ♦

and the Most High your stronghold,

10 There shall no evil happen to you, ♦

neither shall any plague come near your tent.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over you, ♦

to keep you in all your ways.

12 They shall bear you in their hands, ♦

lest you dash your foot against a stone.

13 You shall tread upon the lion and adder; ♦

the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

14 Because they have set their love upon me,

therefore will I deliver them; ♦

I will lift them up, because they know my name.

15 They will call upon me and I will answer them; ♦

I am with them in trouble,

I will deliver them and bring them to honour.

16 With long life will I satisfy them ♦

and show them my salvation.

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now:

and shall be for ever. Amen.

Hymn

Before the ending of the day,

Creator of the world, we pray

That you, with steadfast love, would keep

Your watch around us while we sleep.

From evil dreams defend our sight,

From fears and terrors of the night;

Tread underfoot our deadly foe

That we no sinful thought may know.

O Father, that we ask be done

Through Jesus Christ, your only Son;

And Holy Spirit, by whose breath

Our souls are raised to life from death.

The Word of God

Psalmody

Psalm 16

1 Preserve me, O God, for in you have I taken refuge; ♦

I have said to the Lord, ‘You are my lord,

all my good depends on you.’

2 All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, ♦

upon those who are noble in heart.

3 Though the idols are legion that many run after, ♦

their drink offerings of blood I will not offer,

neither make mention of their names upon my lips.

4 The Lord himself is my portion and my cup; ♦

in your hands alone is my fortune.

5 My share has fallen in a fair land; ♦

indeed, I have a goodly heritage.

6 I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel, ♦

and in the night watches he instructs my heart.

7 I have set the Lord always before me; ♦

he is at my right hand; I shall not fall.

8 Wherefore my heart is glad and my spirit rejoices; ♦

my flesh also shall rest secure.

9 For you will not abandon my soul to Death, ♦

nor suffer your faithful one to see the Pit.

10 You will show me the path of life;

in your presence is the fullness of joy ♦

and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now:

and shall be for ever. Amen.

The Collect Silence may be kept. King of kings and Lord of lords,

making the true light to shine:

lighten our darkness now and evermore

that with our lips and in our lives

we may praise you;

for you are our God, now and for ever.

Amen.

The Conclusion In peace we will lie down and sleep;

for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus,

for the night is at hand and the day is now past.

As the night watch looks for the morning,

so do we look for you, O Christ.

Restore us again, O God of hosts;

show us the light of your countenance

and we shall be saved.

Bless and keep us, this night and always.

Amen.
