4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 29, 2017

St. Mary Magdalen Parish Mission Statement St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church is called to foster a welcoming community, to form disciples for Jesus Christ and to joyfully evangelize. Unifying Vision: Walking together with Christ, igniting the Spirit within, living God’s Call.

THE CHOSEN REMNANT Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testament prophets. He speaks in today’s first reading of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a “remnant” in Israel. This image of a remnant, or re-mainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity. Paul’s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too self-confident, he says, too sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have. Today’s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus’ “Great Sermon.” As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God’s kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. CELEBRATING CATHOLIC FAMILIES Living the Word

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading from the Bible as a family enables everyone to become familiar with the rich stories and traditions of our Catholic faith. This week, focus on the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3–12 or Luke 6:20–26). Each evening, discuss one or two Beatitudes together. Does it give you hope? Does it challenge? How is it applicable in today’s society?

CHILDREN’S CORNER JANUARY: Month of Remembering Baptism. Prayer Center Theme is: The Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus as I say these words that were spoken as I was baptized, help me to.... Put written intentions in prayer pig; they will be offered up at all Sunday Masses once a month.

ARE YOU EDUCATING YOUR CHILDREN IN THE CATHOLIC FAITH?

When a child is baptized into the Catholic Church, it is the parents responsibility to commit to raise and educate that child in the Catholic faith. In order to help parents with this education, each parish offers a School of Religion Program (Grades 1-12) for those children attending a public or private school. Call the Parish School of Religion Office at 733-8980.

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time January 29, 2017

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:3

January 29-February 4, 2017

"Be it known to all who enter here that Jesus Christ is the reason for our schools to exist. He is the ever-present teacher, the model of the faculties, and the inspiration of its students." The American Bishops, in their monumental document on education, To Teach as Jesus Did stressed that the means for placing Jesus at the center of our schools is through: 1. Proclaiming the MESSAGE of Jesus; 2. Building and living COMMUNITY; 3. Developing attitudes and practices of

SERVICE; 4. Promoting PRAYER and WORSHIP. Our schools provide an environment where Catholic dogma, values and the spirit of faith permeate the total school community. Students are offered opportunities for daily prayer, celebrations of the liturgical year (Advent, Lent, the Paschal Season, devotions to the Blessed Mother), and the reception of the Holy Eucharist at mass. Service projects, social justice activities, and pro-life programs are other expressions of the faith life of the school. Office of Religious Education, Archdiocese of New Orleans

Prayer to Saint Michael, the Archangel St. Michael, Archangel defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host cast, by the power of God, into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

SMM SCHOOL & PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION PROGRAMS

January This week both religion programs will be focusing on the following questions: How have we been blessed by God? How does God take care of us? When have we experienced God’s comfort? How can we share God’s comfort with others? What actions show that we put God first? Tell me how you know you can trust God.

LET’S PRAY FOR OUR SEMINARIANS In order to support vocations in our diocese, you are asked to add a special prayer for seminarians to your daily prayers. The best way to encourage and support our seminarians is to pray for them.

Prayer for Vocations Loving God, How awesome are your ways! Through your abundant love you bless us with gifts that can make our world holy and just. Dwell deep in our hearts that we may know how to share these gifts. Inspire many to respond generously to your call to service in the Church. May the fire of your love direct us on our journey that we may act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with you. We give you the praise and honor now and forever. Amen. ********************************************** Readings for Sunday, February 5: First Reading — If you share your food with the hungry, provide housing for the homeless, then light shall break forth upon you (Isaiah 58:7-10). Psalm — The just man is a light in the darkness to the upright (Psalm 112). Second Reading — My message to you, says Paul, was not clever words of wisdom but the proclamation of Christ crucified (1 Corinthians 2:1-5). Gospel — You are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. In your good deeds your light shines before others, leading them to glorify God (Matthew 5:13-16). A PRAYER FOR EVERY FAMILY by St. John Paul II

God, from whom all fatherhood in heaven and earth de-scends, Father, who are Love and Life, ensure that every human family on earth shall become, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, "born of woman," and through the Holy Spirit, the source of divine charity, a true shrine of life and love for the generations which are always renewing them-selves. Ensure that Your grace shall guide the thoughts and the works of spouses toward the good of their families and of all families in the world. Ensure that the young gen-erations shall find firm support in the family for their hu-manity and their growth in truth and love. Ensure the love, reinforced by the grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony shall show itself to be stronger than any weakness and every crisis through which our families pass at times. Amen.

Prayer for our Men and Women in Military Service

O Prince of Peace, we humbly ask Your protection for all our men and women in military service. Give them unflinching courage to defend with honor, dignity and devotion the rights of all who are imperiled by injustice and evil. Guard our churches, our homes, our schools, our hospitals, our factories, our buildings and all those within from harm and peril. Protect our land and its peoples from enemies within and without. Grant an early peace with victory founded upon justice. Instill in the hearts and minds of men and women everywhere a firm purpose to live forever in peace and good will toward all. Amen.

seas for our country and against terrorism. SPC Donald Monteleone, Jr.,Air National Guard; Sgt. Brian Lane, Lt. Col. Jason E. Burkett, USMC; Mat-thew J. Extraordinary Ministers of Communion and Volun-teers hold a Rosary and Communion Service. Their generous dedication of ministering to this particular and sometimes forgotten group in our community is greatly appreciated by the residents and their fami-lies. There is a great need for EMC’s to assist with distribution of communion. If you are interested in helping in this ministry, please call the rectory for further information.
