The Glasgow High School Speech & Drama Team competed at the Huntley Project Invitational Meet on Saturday. There were 26 schools competing at this meet with over 350 students participating. Coach John LaBonty said, “A meet this size is a good tune-up for Divisionals and State. We were real proud of how our kids did.” The highlight of the meet was Glasgow’s two pantomime competitors. They ended the day tied but due to a tie breaking system, Freshman Machaela Cathy took first place with her piece entitled “First Day on the Job”. Senior Bridger Sanders was second with his “Tango for Two”. Hailey Stone placed third in Serious Solo. Also competing in drama were Rachel Overby and James Fauth in Humorous Duo; Kylie Cook in Serious Solo; Amanda McDonald and Paige Schmidt in Humorous Duo; Kat Geer and Kayla Harrington in Serious Duo. On the Speech side, five Scotties made it to finals. Two freshmen, Rachel Sigmundstad and Maria Morris competed in Spontaneous Oral Interpretation, placing fourth and seventh. Max Knodel wrote a speech about “National Stereotyping” which took sixth place in Original Oratory. Serious Oral Interpretation had 36 people competing; Glasgow’s Sija Laffin and Ethan Jamba placed fifth and sixth. Also competing in speech were: Humorous Oral Interpretation - Andy Brandt, Ember Barnett and Amber Omara; and Jared Chalmers in Impromptu Speaking. The Team travels to Shepherd to compete at the Eastern Class B-C Divisional Meet on Saturday. The top six competitors in each of the 16 events qualify for state competition. The Montana Class B-C State Meet is in Glasgow on January 31st and February 1st. There’s still time to volunteer, if you would like to be involved in making this exciting event a success. Contact either John or Sharon LaBonty at 228-9208.

‘First Day on the Job’, ‘Tango for Two’ come in first and #2

The Montana Pro Rodeo Hall and Wall of Fame has the nation’s largest high school rodeo scholarship program. It was established to benefit Montana High School Rodeo youth who wish to further their education. To date, a total of $297,000 has been awarded in scholarships since 2006, the first year scholarships were awarded. Opheim’s Chase Redfield was awarded one of 12 $3,000 scholarships in 2009. The Montana Pro Rodeo Hall and Wall of Fame in Billings is debt free and has a substantial Endowment Fund that is growing to help for scholarships in the future.

Jim started participating in rodeos around 1930. He worked both ends of the arena. He rode bucking horses, steer wrestled, was in the wild cow milking, as well as calf roping. He was an early member of the RCA (Rodeo Cowboys Association), now known as the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Jim held car number 611. June 10, 1938 during the Lewistown Rodeo, Jim married Dorothy Carlson. In 1949, Jim decided to make rodeo a priority and purchased a calf horse named Lucky that he rode through the ’50s. He trained his next calf horse, Little Man, that he rode during the ’60s. While participating, he also judged many rodeos. He roped calves until the early 1970s and continued to team rope till a couple years before he passed. Jim enjoyed all aspects of rodeo, especially visiting friends and with everyone that he would meet along the rodeo trail After his cancer surgery that removed his voice box, he talked with an artificial larynx. This never slowed him down or hindered his joy of visiting. He always packed extra batteries, so he was never left speechless. In addition to the lifelong dedication to rodeo, Jim

served on the Bureau of Land Management Advisory Board, was a member of the Montana Stockgrowers, and the Glasgow Elks Lodge. He was also the first 4-H horse project leader in Valley County. Jim shared his enthusiasm with many young aspiring rodeo competitors. His rodeo and ranching passion as well as western heritage has been passed down through the family. His son Jack (Andie) Billingsley, and grandson J (LeAnne Billingsley) still continue to operate the family ranch and rope competitively. Betwen Jim, Jack and J, the Billingsley boys habe been professionally competing in the PRCA for about 70 years. Jim lived his life to the fullest and passed away on December 20, 1976, at the age of 63. His legacy will not be forgotten as he will now be part of the Montana Pro Rodeo Hall and Wall of Fame. The day kicks off on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 at MetraPark with a Wall of Fame photo session where ticket holders can get their pictures taken with past world champions, National Finals Rodeo contestants, Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit champions, rodeo queens, honored guests and special VIPs. That list includes:• Larry Mahan – World Champion All-Around and Bull Riding• Lewis Feild – World Champion All-Around And Bareback

There are three old men seated inside the doctor’s office – all suffering from bad memory. The doctor wants to take a little test, so he asks the first old man, “Can you tell me what is four times four?” The first man replies, “756.” The doctor can’t believe this. So he moves on to the second old man asks him, “Your turn. What is four times four?” The second man replies, “Friday.” The doctor shakes his head in disbelief and then asks the third man, “Do you think you have the answer?” The third old man replies, “Sixteen.” “Wonderful!” says the doctor. “How did you get that?” “Easy,” the third old man replies, “Just add 756 to Friday.”
