Social Initiatives – December 2014

Happy New Year to all from Team Social! We hope that you have had great New Year's celebrations and are ready to go forth in 2015 and achieve all that you have hoped for! We, at Team Social, are looking forward to a fantastic year full of activities and member participation. Wishing everyone a very Happy January ahead!

Ward off TB- Know the Signs!!!

On 16th December Suryoday's Social Initiatives team in Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari organised an awareness camp on tuberculosis. In an area where this disease is sadly rampant, members were given information on the primary symptoms and causes of TB. All 25 participants were also given information on how to prevent this disease and what are the various treatment options available.

Stay Safe, Don't be Sorry!!!

On 19th December Suryoday's Social Initiatives team in Kanakangi, Belgaum organised an awareness camp on Gas Safety- on request of members in that area. Members were given information on how to ensure safe practices while cooking with gas cylinders and also how to take benefits of the Karnataka Government's Gas Subsidy and Safety Schemes. 45 members attended the event and we are confident that they will maintain safe practices in their homes as a result!

I spy with my Little Eye- Eye Check-up Camp!!!

Thanks to modern medical advances, many health issues which we could not resolve in the past- doctors can resolve today. The Social Initiatives team in Gota, Ahmedabad organised an eye check-up camp on 20th December in an area with very little access to modern medical care. Children under the age of 12 were given free follow up treatments and total 22 members were detected with cataract- who has proceeded for discounted surgery. 80% of the 127 attendants had checked their eyes for the first time at our camp!

Ancient tips in a Modern World- Yoga & Meditation Training!!!

To help sustain our fast paced modern lifestyle, Suryoday's Social Initiatives Team in Erode, Coimbatore organised a Yoga and Meditation Training Camp on 18th December. Members were given training on various yoga poses and the benefits of Pranayam- with a special focus on stress reduction and mental & emotional health. Our external trainer gave the 28 participants top tips on how to use these ancient practices in keeping with their current lifestyle.

National Youth Day – 12th January 2014

“Whatever we wish ourselves to be; we have the power to make ourselves. If what we are now has been the result of our own past actions; it certainly follows that whatever we wish to be in the future, can be produced by our present actions. So, we have to

National Youth Day is celebrated in India on 12th January on the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. This event was declared by Government of India in 1984 as it was felt that the philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth.

Every third person in an Indian city today is a youth. By 2020, the average age of India will be 29 years old and the average youth will very likely be a city-dweller. This will make India the youngest country in the world and she will experience a dynamic transformation of her working potential. Economists believe, if used efficiently, the youth potential of India could add upto 2% growth rate on the total existing production rate (GDP). A closer analysis of the urban youth also suggests that increased political participation, youth engagement at a policy level and urgent attention to improving the average youth's quality of life can ensure that India enjoys the benefits of this dynamically changing demography. As India's Youth- Here are the Top 5 Tips to ensure that we lead ourselves and our nation into the future: 1. Remember to take Health & Sanitation as your number one priority! If you are unwell- you cannot progress towards

your goals and dreams! 2. Technology will be the game changer in this century. Learn

to use technology to your best advantages and progress along with it!

3. Continuously get trained in your profession. There is lots of competition out there- keep yourself updated with the latest skills in your profession and be at the top of your game!

4. Be aware of your local environment and advocate change for yourself and your neighbors.

5. Be proud of the changing dynamics in the country and be part of the youth movement which will affect the change!
