Happy New Year: Resolve to get involved!

Happy New Year! I am honored to be serving as the HBA of F-M’s president for 2013. Thank you to Terry Becker, Terry Becker Construction, LLC, for his hard work in 2012. He is one of only a handful of two-term presidents. Stepping up for that amount

of time is a huge sacrifice away from your company and personal life, and we appreciate all he’s done!

Your HBA is looking toward some big changes as we formulate a three-year strategic plan in March. Our goal is to take a hard look at how younger generations view membership and advocacy organizations such as ours. Generations X and Y are very different than those generations who came before. Many require a demonstrated return on investment, and no longer associations because of the outdated reason that: “it’s the right thing to do.” Times are changing, and we believe it’s time to change along with them.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the value of getting involved in your Association. This is your HBA. We exist for you, the member, and we need your input and energy. We have eight committees ranging from membership development and retention to events to public issues and education. You are welcome to give them a “test drive.” If you see a couple of areas that seem interesting, contact the office about attending a meeting to see how the committee fits. You are not committed to join until you find one you like! Contact Allison Weckman at (701) 232-5846 or [email protected] for more details.

If you’re not up for joining a committee, plan to attend a couple of General Membership Meetings. These offer variety as well: from a chili cook-off to the Parade of Homes Celebration to the August picnic, there is something for everyone. Bring a friend, or contact a fellow member that you know and invite him or her to come with you. If you are an established, involved member, think about other members who aren’t as involved, and extend an invitation!

My involvement began a few years after I started working at Kochmann Brothers Homes, Inc. I was just out of college at the North Dakota State College of Science, Wahpeton. It was 1999, and Paul Kochmann told me it was time I became active in the organization since I was working with Bob and him. He invited me to the New Member Development Committee meeting. In the past

Darrick GuthmillerKochmann Brothers Homes, Inc.

13 years, I have been able to learn almost everything about what this Association offers and accomplishes. If you’re not involved on some level, you haven’t taken full advantage of your membership. I have gained friends and built relationships over the years. Our business has also benefitted because we know ahead of most others what is heading our way in regard to codes changes, trends and other industry-related issues. Maybe most importantly, my peers recognize the fact that I am involved. It means something and they appreciate the time spent volunteering.

As you are making your New Year’s resolutions, add one to get involved at some level with the HBA. You won’t regret it!

Congratulations! In mid-November, the North Dakota Association of

Builders held its Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet in Fargo. The Plains Builder featured a full recap last month, but I would like to congratulate Gerald Eid who was honored with the first-ever NDAB Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to home building. Gerald’s commitment to the Association and his industry is unmatched.

Congratulations also go out to 2012 State Associate of the Year LeRoy Kurtyka, Northern Plumbing Supply in Grand Forks; 2012 State Builder of the Year, Chad Moldenhauer, of K & L Homes in Bismarck; and 2012 BEAM Award winner Dana Schlomer, Schlomer Construction, of Mandan! It was an honor to have the meeting in Fargo and good to see our friends from around the state.

Important dates for 2013On a final note, important dates for this year include:• Feb.22-24–Red River Valley Home & Garden

Thank You 2012 PAC ContributorsHBA of F-M raises $15K

Your commitment to the industry in which you work is honorable and unmatched. The HBA of F-M’s advocacy program is successful because of those who take part in it. It is not enough for the Association to just be present at meetings. The Association is successful because it is taking part in advocacy on every front, including the political front through the North Dakota Association of Builder’s Political Action Committee (NDAB-PAC). A list of contributors to NDAB-PAC can be found to the right.

What is NDAB-PAC?NDAB-PAC is the North Dakota Association of Builders’ Political Action

Committee. It is a non-partisan political action committee that provides support for candidates who are friends of the building industry. People who show they care and are concerned about the building industry’s future make contributions to NDAB-PAC because they believe that cooperation equals strength.

Interested in donating?NDAB-PAC is made successful by those who donate and are involved. If you

haven’t been involved in the past, it’s ok. Now is your time! Ask those members who have given, why they give. Learn about the good work being done on behalf of the industry to benefit you. Then ask how you can help!

If you would like more information on the Association’s advocacy efforts or how you can take part in NDAB-PAC, contact the HBA at (701) 232-5846.

Elections are over: Now take part in the legislative process!

With the election season well behind us and the legislative session just around corner, the HBA of F-M’s advocacy work never takes a break. There are several upcoming opportunities the HBA invites you to take part in.

North Dakota Legislative ReceptionThe HBA is working closely with the North Dakota Association of Builders

to put forward an aggressive pro-housing agenda when the legislative session starts in January. NDAB is hosting a legislative reception Feb. 5 in Bismarck and all HBA members are invited. Every legislator is invited to the event and it is a great way for members to get to meet and talk about the issues they are facing.

Minnesota Builder Day at the CapitolThe HBA also works with the Builders Association of Minnesota to

advocate for housing. The HBA is taking part in BAM’s Builder Day at the Capitol on Jan. 30. The HBA will arrange car pooling and is looking for members interested in getting involved on the Minnesota side of the river.

If you are interested and available to take part in either event for North Dakota or Minnesota, please contact Bryce Johnson at (701) 232-5846 or [email protected].

President’s Message

As your state president for 2013, I look forward to leading the association during the upcoming legislative session and on issues affecting our association and membership throughout the year.

A project we will be working on is the review of the State Building Code

and a new version of code books. The North Dakota State Building Code Advisory Committee has begun the process of reviewing the 2012 International Codes (residential, building, fuel gas and mechanical). In March they will begin accepting and reviewing proposed amendments, followed by public hearings and votes on amendments. (The current State Building Code includes the 2009 International Codes, and was put in place Jan. 1, 2011.)

The North Dakota Association of Builders has a representative on the State Building Code Advisory Committee, and we will work hard to represent the best interests of our members.

On the bright side...North Dakota has much to be proud of these days:

• In second place among oil producing states, North Dakota has excelled in this arena, and everyone is working hard to manage the growth and expansion happening across the state.

• We have three of the top ten lowest unemployment MSAs (metropolitan statistical areas) in the United States. Bismarck, Fargo and Grand Forks are in the top three positions — at 2.2, 2.8 and 3.1 percent unemployment, respectively — on this list compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

• Marketwatch recently recognized the top ten “Cities Where Everyone Has a Job,” and the same three cities led this list as well.

• Our state also boasts the second highest church/religious service attendance in the country.

We have some exciting opportunities here in our state, and we’re fortunate to be a part of the progress and development taking place. With the opportunities come challenges, but I believe we can work together to address the issues that challenge us along the way.

Best wishes to you all in the coming year, and please feel free to contact me if I can be of assistance to you. My cell number is (701) 866-1284 and my email is [email protected].

New Year’s Resolutions

As a member of the North Dakota Association of Builders, here are some New Year’s resolutions that can get you off to a great start in 2013:• Sign up for the NDAB’s Member Rebate program and earn money for the products you’re putting in your homes and remodeling projects. In the

past two years, North Dakota members who have participated in this program have earned a total of $53,152.50! For details go to www.hbarebates.com/ndab. Don’t leave money on the table, sign up today!

• Compare your current insurance package with that of State Auto Insurance, NDAB’s endorsed program, and you may see future member dividends. Visit the State Auto website at www.stateauto.com, and find an agent in your community by clicking on the “Find an Agent” link and search by city, county, or zip code.

• Set yourself apart in the marketplace and become a North Dakota Professional Builder. This voluntary certification program is the only one of its kind in the state. Find more information at www.ndbuild.com.

• Protect your business and check out Bonded Builders Warranty Group for home warranties for your home buyers. BBWG has a menu of warranty programs and rates designed to fit your business needs. They offer conciliation, a time-tested, proven effective dispute resolution process that will save you time, money and the good will of your homeowner. Unlike other warranty companies, BBWG’s Conciliation service is provided at no cost to the home builder or home owner.

Federal bill to deter theft of metal introduced

To help prevent the theft of copper plumbing, electrical wiring, air conditioning units and other valuable metals from construction sites, the National Association of Home Builders supports legislation introduced by Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). S. 3631, the Metal Theft Prevention Act, would make it a federal offense to steal metal from critical infrastructure, require transactions between the sellers of copper and secondary metal recyclers to be documented and assess penalties for non-compliance.

In a joint letter of support for the bill, NAHB and other organizations said the measure would “decrease the prevalence of metal theft, thereby protecting infrastructure, promoting public safety and saving money and valuable resources for business across the economy.” For more information, contact Suzanne Beall at NAHB: (800) 368-5242 ext. 8407.

NOTE: There will also be legislation introduced in North Dakota to help deter the theft of copper from construction sites. NDAB will be working with others on this proposal.

Supreme Court looks at storm water

Two cases heard by the U.S. Supreme Court that were supposed to help shed light on the limits of federal jurisdiction over storm water discharge ended up doing just the opposite. NAHB submitted “friend of the court” briefs in Los Angeles County Flood Control District v. Natural Resources Defense Counsel, arguing that concrete-lined river channels should be treated as point sources, rather than navigable waters. In Decker v. Northwest Environmental Defense Center, the association cited the same points about storm water runoff from logging roads. The Supreme Court has yet to issue a final ruling in either case. But in both instances,

2012 BAM award winners announced, 2013 president installed

On Dec. 10, members from around the state gathered for the annual Builders Association of Minnesota board meeting and the Awards Dinner and Farewell Party for Pam Perri. Thanks to all who attended, sponsored and helped make the day a success.

During the board meeting, a budget for 2013 was approved and the board discussed several important issues including the fight against mandatory fire sprinklers, the Legal Action Fund, the new draft energy code and preparation for the Minnesota 2013 legislative session.

The evening’s events began with a cocktail reception followed by dinner and presentation of the 2012 BAM awards hosted by Keith Kylmala. A big congratulations goes out to the 2012 award winners:

• RisingStarAward –Sam Horn, Brainerd Savings and Loan

• AssociateoftheYear– Gerry Traut, Xcel Energy• RemodeleroftheYear– Todd Bjerstedt, McDonald

Remodeling• BuilderoftheYear–KC Chermak, Pillar Homes

Following the awards ceremony, 2013 BAM President Chad Kompelien of Mike Kompelien Custom Homes was sworn in by his father Mike Kompelien. Chad’s wife, daughter, son and mother were also present to witness the installation. Chad gave a powerful speech after being sworn in stating, “The Builders Association of Minnesota is not just the watch dog for its Builder and Associate members, we also look out for all current and future homeowners... Together we will make this industry the best in Minnesota.”

He introduced some of his priorities for the year including taking fire sprinklers through the administrative law judge hearing process, educating new lawmakers at the state Capitol, and helping BAM’s new executive vice president transition into his or her role and get out to each local association.

Rounding out the evening was a presentation made by Kathe Ostrom, with the help of nine past BAM presidents, to thank Pam Perri for 11 years of service to the association and industry as BAM’s executive vice president. The past presidents in attendance to toast - and roast - Perri included Tom Walsky, Curt Swanson, Jeff Schoenwetter, Jim Gander, Kathe Ostrom, Monte Mraz, Mike Gohman, Todd Bjerstedt, and 2012 BAM President Keith Kylmala. Each spoke of their experience working with Perri celebrating her dedication, determination, and political acumen and, of course, a few stories were shared as well.

It was a celebratory night for BAM. Thank you again to Perri for her leadership. We look forward to Chad’s presidency in 2013 and congratulate the 2012 BAM award winners.

Housing remains on growth track for 2013, but challenges remainDec.20,2012 - Upward trends in recent months among

a number of housing indicators point to a slow and steady growth in the nation’s housing market in 2013, but several challenges remain, according to the latest economic and housing forecast by David Crowe, chief economist for the National Association of Home Builders.

“Consistent, positive reports on housing starts, permits, prices, new-home sales and builder confidence in recent months provide further confirmation that a gradual but steady housing recovery is underway across much of the nation,” said Crowe. “However, stubbornly tight lending standards for home buyers and builders, inaccurate appraisals and proposals by policymakers to tamper with the mortgage interest deduction could dampen future housing demand.”

Stating there is no consistent national trend, Crowe noted the housing recovery is local but spreading.

“We are transitioning from a very low demand level, where most people hold themselves out of the marketplace, to a case where supply will start being the problem,” he said. “As we begin to build more homes to address that supply, the new home stock will be a much more important element of the recovery.”

Setting the 2000-2002 period as a baseline benchmark for normal housing activity, Crowe said that owner-occupied remodeling has returned to previously normal levels.

“Multifamily production is also well on its way, back to 69 percent of normal,” he said. “It’s the single-family market that has the farthest to go, standing at only 40 percent of what is considered a typical market.”

Meanwhile, the number of improving housing markets across the nation continues to show considerable advancement. When the NAHB/First American Improving Markets Index was launched in September of 2011, only 12 metropolitan areas out of 360 were on the list. As of December 2012, the list stands at more than 200 metro

areas. The index is based on a six-month upswing in housing permits, employment and house prices.

“One reason we have seen such a significant jump in the IMI is because house prices are beginning to recover,” said Crowe. “House prices bottomed out early in 2011 and since early 2012 we’ve seen a 6 percent increase on a national basis.”

Another factor spurring the recovery is that household formations are on the rise. In the early part of the decade, the nation was generating 1.4 million new households each year. This collapsed to 500,000 annually during the housing downturn and currently new households are being formed at close to a 900,000 clip per annum.

“We’re not up to normal, but this is adding to demand for housing,” Crowe said.

As new households form at a growing rate, so too does builder confidence. The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index, which measures builder confidence in the single-family housing market, has posted gains for eight consecutive months and now stands at a level of 47. This is very close to the critical midpoint of 50, where equal numbers of builders view the market as good or bad. The HMI has not been above 50 since April of 2006.

Single-family home starts are projected to climb to 534,000 units this year, up 23 percent from 2011. NAHB is forecasting that single-family new-home production will post a healthy 21 percent gain in 2013 to 647,000 units. Starts will continue their upward climb in 2014, posting a further 29 percent rise to 837,000 units.

Multifamily production is expected to rise 31 percent in 2012, reaching the 233,000 level, and posting a solid 16 percent gain in 2013 to 270,000 units. Multifamily starts are anticipated to rise an additional 9 percent in 2014 to 294,000 units.

Meanwhile, new single-family home sales are expected to rise from 307,000 last year to 367,000 this year, a 20 percent rise. Sales are anticipated to climb to 447,000 next year, up 22 percent from 2012 and jump to 607,000 in 2014, a 36 percent increase over 2013 levels.

EPA announces second round of enforcement for Lead Paint Rule violations

The Environmental Protection Agency announced 16 enforcement actions on Nov. 14 for violations of the lead-based paint Renovation,

Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) in the second round of publicized enforcement since the rule took effect in 2010.

Two one-year pilot programs were introduced to consider a firm’s ability to pay penalties and to move toward a quick settlement.

The majority of the 13 cases that were settled between the EPA and the firms used the two pilot programs to fine the firms a total of $53,792 in civil penalties.

In the Lead-based Paint Expedited Settlement Agreement Pilot Program, significantly reduced penalties ranging from $0 to $5,000 are offered to firms to facilitate the quick settlement of easily determined, minor violations, such as incomplete recordkeeping where no occupant is either pregnant or under 18. Reduced penalties offered under the ESA pilot are not negotiable and firms have 30 days to respond. Firms retain the right to contact EPA regarding the enforcement process.

Under the Pilot RRP Penalty Program for Micro-Businesses, significantly reduced penalties (not more than $4,000) are offered to firms who have annual sales or gross pre-tax revenue of $300,000 or less. The micro-business program is not restricted to violations such as recordkeeping or by the age of the occupant.

In the three remaining administrative complaints that EPA filed, the agency is still seeking civil penalties up to the full statutory limit of $37,500 per violation, which could result in fines worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Please let NAHB know if you or a colleague has a worksite that has been visited by the EPA in relation to the lead paint rule, as this information can help us keep others informed and develop further compliance resources.

Profile of the violationsThe majority of these 16 enforcement actions took place

in EPA Region 1 (Boston), EPA Region 2 (Edison, N.J.), and EPA Region 5 (Chicago). Of these 16 firms, eight were contractors, residential remodelers or window/door replacers, four were painting companies, two were property managers and one was a training provider for lead-safe certification. In at least five of the cases, children lived in the home – which raises the EPA fine. In several of the cases, EPA enforced the lead paint rule because the firm failed to obtain lead-safe certification before beginning the renovations. In a few other cases, the violations were the result of not providing EPA’s “Renovate Right” pamphlet to the home’s occupants.

To read a full description of the violations and penalties in all 16 cases, visit the EPA website.

As enforcement actions move forward around the country, use the updated sample checklist that NAHB has developed to help keep your business in compliance with the LRRP. NAHB has also compiled a significant amount of information and resources to aid our members in dealing with the lead paint rule at www.nahb.org/leadpaint.

Three Rivers DecoratingSmall company delivers personal service from start to finishby Kirsten Rosenow, Communication & Office Coordinator

Three Rivers Decorating is a full-service floor covering store located in Wahpeton, N.D., boasting a 10,000-square-foot showroom and warehouse. Its small sales staff of four combines over 90 years of experience and gives each customer a personable experience from the moment he or she enters the store. Even though Three Rivers Decorating’s specialty lies in floor coverings, the staff has come to help oversee the whole process, whether it’s updating one room or the whole house.

“We have people come in with new homes and we help them with siding, light fixtures, the whole gamut,” says Carolyn DeFries, manager of Three Rivers Decorating. “We really want to help from start to finish, all as a complimentary service.”

DeFries’s husband, Rick, started working with his parents, the original owners, in 1976 and has been there ever since.

Carolyn graduated from North Dakota State College of Science with a legal secretary degree and began working for her dad’s electrical contracting business. Her interest for the construction industry grew over the next ten years until her dad’s retirement in 1983 led her to working with her husband and his parents at Three Rivers Decorating. Rick and Carolyn then purchased the company in 1989 and they continue to serve the Wahpeton area. In 2006, they became a member of the HBA of F-M.

As a smaller company, the staff is able to be very hands-on and deliver a personable experience which Carolyn sees as qualities that make them stand out the most.

“We take the customers’ ideas and work with them from start to finish,” she says.

Even as a successful, long-term company, Three Rivers Decorating faces challenges like others in the industry. One of its biggest challenges is handling customers who

come in with false information or unrealistic expectations for projects they saw on TV. The staff must then work to inform the customers, and for Carolyn, the ultimate goal is to educate them right when they come in.

“People know they can come in and trust what we are saying,” she says.

The staff’s experience, coupled with a vast knowledge of the products available, helps customers have a positive and efficient experience.

“We try to bring in the newest and most exciting products,” Carolyn says. “We have a lot of new products

from luxury vinyl tile to carpets and customers have the option to stock and carry.”

Three Rivers Decorating recently opened 1,600 square feet of space to showcase art, accessories and small furniture. The art displayed ranges from statement pieces to simple and inexpensive pieces, and Carolyn is confident there is something for everyone’s interest.

“With colors and styling changing, there is always something new happening,”

she says. Over the last 10 to 15 years, Carolyn has seen home interiors change from a country, homespun feel to softer, contemporary styles. She loves helping customers transform their homes, and enjoys the variety of projects and people she gets to work with on a regular basis.

“It is something new every day,” she says “This is not a dull job at all.”

Carolyn advises those looking to start out in the flooring industry to find good floor installers and to get started on the right foot with other companies.

“If you get involved with good companies, you are going to build an alliance and they’ll treat you right,” she says. She also reminds newcomers to keep up with new products and industry education.

What is your company’s focus?

“Custom residential work. We do a lot of custom-tiled showers and heated floors.”What is the latest trend in your business/industry?

“Heated floors, linear line drains and large-format tile. Tiles just keep getting bigger and bigger. A few years ago a 16” x 16” tile was considered large.

Now we see 20” x 20” or 24” x 24” regularly. Wood-plank looking tile is also very popular right now.”What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the industry today and how are you dealing with it?

“Structural movement such as expansion/contraction, deflection, etc., are challenges. We try and use the latest techniques and products to combat structural movement.”

Don’t leave money on the table: check out member rebate program

No one likes to leave money on the table. So, what would you think if you could get a rebate for your loyalty to many of the nation’s leading housing industry product suppliers? Well, now you can!

The North Dakota Association of Builders’ Member Rebate Program increases your bottom line. For the minimal effort of informing NDAB about home construction products you use and when you close on a home or project, you’ll be putting money back in your pocket. Both Builder and Remodeler companies, no matter how large or small, qualify for the program, and you are not required to use products from every manufacturer. Start planning now for 2013 Remodeled Home Tourby Alison Streyle, Events Coordinator

The 1st annual Remodeled Home Tour was a great success and the HBA of F-M hopes to see it grow every year. The trick is to plan early! Don’t wait until right before the Tour to try and find a willing homeowner to jump on board. Now is the time to talk to clients and homeowners, making the agreement prior to starting a project. Working with your homeowners on this from the get-go allows for any questions and arrangements to be taken care of and planned out.

Consider different incentives to offer the homeowner that may help them agree to their home being a part of the Tour. Here are some great options:

1. Offer a price break or discount on their project.

2. Offer the painting of another room in the home.

3. Offer a cleaning service to come in after the Tour is complete to get their home back to normal.

4. Reserve a room for them at a hotel (in or out of town, depending on their preference) to give them somewhere to stay while the Tour is running.

5. Buy them a gift card for dinner out on you so they don’t have to worry about cooking and cleaning before the Tour begins the next day.

Choose what works best for you and then offer some options to your homeowners so they can pick what is most beneficial to them! Working on this now helps them stay calm and excited about the Tour instead of creating stress and anxiety about having people walking through their homes.

We want this event to be exciting and fun for everyone involved: remodelers, homeowners and consumers. Feel free to contact Alison Streyle at (701) 232-5846 or [email protected] with any questions.

Remodelers Council Focus: Russ Richards, Rebuilding Together Fargo Moorhead Area, Inc.by Kirsten Rosenow, Communication & Office Coordinator

For five years, Russ Richards has been involved with the HBA of F-M’s Remodelers Council. Richards, executive director of Rebuilding Together Fargo Moorhead Area, Inc., first became involved with the HBA in 2007 while working with Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity. In 2011, he started Rebuilding Together Fargo Moorhead Area, Inc., and rejoined the Association with his organization.

“Being part of the Council has been extremely beneficial for me and the organizations I have worked for,” says Richards. “When I need information or have a problem, I have been able to pick up the phone and, in a short time, get answers and help.”

The National Association of Home Builders’ Remodelers Council was founded in 1982 and, in 1990, the HBA of F-M’s Council formed. The Council assists in planning the Fall Home Show, the Remodeled

Home Tour and actively participates in many community service projects. Richards has helped with many of the Council’s projects, including building

bunk beds for the Gladys Ray Shelter, working on the RENEW House and assisting with a ramp project.

Remodelers Council members also see benefits like strong networking opportunities, company promotion, industry advocacy, and community involvement.

“In my opinion, one of the best benefits is having a

variety of experts from several different fields that are willing to offer advice and help to others when needed,” says Richards, who says that he joined the Council to get to know people in the area building industry on a better level.

Rebuilding Together Fargo Moorhead Area, Inc., is also dedicated to actively helping out in the community by offering home repairs and renovations to low-income families for free. The organization has an emphasis in helping the elderly, veterans and those living with a disability.

“Our mission is to bring volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of home owners in need,” says Richards.

For more information on the Remodelers Council or to become a Council member, contact Allison Weckman at [email protected] or at (701) 232-5846.

The foundation, created in 1993 by the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead, is a local 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization.

It was established with funds donated by HBA members, fundraising events and the HBA itself. The purpose for its creation was to provide an outlet for the builder, remodeler, and companies related to the building industry to show the community that there is more to the building industry than demolition, construction, and remodeling.

The HBA of F-M handles the administrative duties for the foundation at no charge. Any contribution designated to the foundation goes directly to the foundation and its charitable work.

Home Builders Care prepares for 2013Home Builders Care is ready for another great year in 2013. With the

successful Home Builders Care Build for Habitat completed, we are looking forward to what opportunities the New Year will bring.

This year, we are kicking off our partnership with the Fargo Motor Patrol on its 50th annual Fish Fry. Tickets for the Feb. 1 event at the Fargo Civic Center will be available at the HBA of F-M office and Home Builders Care board members will also be selling tickets. Admission to attend the 50th Annual Fish Fry are only $10 and proceeds will benefit Home Builders Care and the Fargo Motor Patrol. In addition to a delicious supper, there is also a meat raffle and live auction. Everyone who purchases a ticket has the chance to win the grand prize of $500.

As a partner, HBC is helping to secure auction items in addition to selling tickets. We ask members of the HBA to consider donating or giving discounts on items for the live auction. If there is anything you can provide, contact Jenny Erickson at (701) 232-5846 or [email protected].

In January, members of our local student chapters will be traveling to Las Vegas to participate in the Residential Construction Management Competition at the International Builders Show. Starting on Jan. 23, students from North Dakota State University and the North Dakota State College of Science will present projects to a panel of judges. Students compete against other schools from around the country. If you are attending IBS, be sure to check the competition out. The schedule will be posted at www.buildersshow.com/studentchapters closer to the show.

Support your FoundationHBA of F-M members have many ways to support Home Builders Care. The

HBC Board challenges you to find at least one way that works for you to give back to your Foundation.

• Monetary donations are always appreciated and we have numerous recognition programs (see the next page for levels). You can even give online using your credit card. Just click on the Donate button at www.hbcfm.com. Consider being a Triple Player which was set up to recognize those HBA members who support the HBA through membership dues, invest at least $365 in NDAB PAC and donate at least $365 to Home Builders Care.

• Use Goodsearch and Goodshop when searching and shopping online. Make sure you type in Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation as the group you support. Goodshop also offers discounts and coupons so you can get a little something for yourself while giving back.

• Take your aluminum, magazines and paper recycling to Minnkota Recycling and indicate that you want the proceeds to go to Home Builders Care.

• Host us at any public or networking event you organize. We have found these events are great for spreading awareness about Home Builders Care while raising some money.

• Adopt a Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades student for the 2013 session. For only $75, you can help us provide this course to area high schoolers.

• Volunteer at the Health Tech & Trades Career Expo. You can see highlights from the 2012 Expo on pages 30-31. We always need people to represent our industry. Start planning an interactive booth now!

Meet your Board: Ken Krajsaby Kirsten Rosenow, Communication & Office Coordinator

You may recognize Ken Krajsa, Bell State Bank & Trust, because of his long-term service with the HBA of F-M board of directors. Or, perhaps you’ve seen him on his motorcycle at the Home Builders Care Charity Ride or socializing at one of the monthly General Membership Meetings. Maybe

you’re even one of the members Krajsa sponsored for HBA membership. No matter what the reason, it is clear Ken Krajsa has taken a key role to the development and betterment of the Association and the building industry over the years.

Krajsa is a senior vice president at Bell State Bank & Trust, who joined the HBA in1985. He’s been a member of the HBA board of directors for almost two decades, but if you ask him, he’ll say he’s been on the board since the office got indoor plumbing. Krajsa has held the secretary and Associate Vice President position locally, and is an ex-officio member serving as a North Dakota Association of Builder’s Associate National Director. He will be named a National Association of Home Builders Life Director at the International Builders Show this month.

“When I began financing contractors I wanted to learn as much about their business as I could and I figured involvement with the board of directors would be beneficial,” he says.

Krajsa is also actively involved on the New Member Development & Retention Committees and has accrued nearly 900 Spike points for his recruitment and retention efforts. He is no stranger to the annual Golf Outing, many Lunch & Learn offerings, meeting with legislators at the capitol and attending the Home Shows and Parades. For him, being involved, especially on the board of directors, keeps members at the forefront and creates a strong Association.

“We are a member-driven Association and the purpose of the board is to develop policy for the benefit of the members,” says Krajsa. “A strong and effective board will make for a strong and effective HBA.”

Serving on the board, Krajsa has been able to develop many friendships and he appreciates the camaraderie he has with many of the other members.

“We have a dedicated, respected group of Builders and Associates in our area,” he says.

When Krajsa isn’t working or at the HBA, you can find him on his motorcycle or out at the lake. He is expecting his first grandchild in June.
