From the EditorSo with Christmas over for another year and a new year upon us, it’s time for new resolutions and a time to look forward.

I’ve never been very good with New Year resolutions. Yes I won’t eat another mince pie until next December but that’s easy to achieve. I did once bet my daughter a month’s pocket money that I could stay off the booze for a whole month - she got quite panicky towards the end of January that she wasn’t going to get her pocket money, so I ‘gave in” on the 29th!

So what do you plan on doing differently this year? Last year I vowed to get leaner and fitter before the big 50, which I sort of did but I’m afraid I didn’t get to many of Paul’s fitness classes. Having reached my birthday it all went downhill from there, so maybe, just maybe, I’ll have another go this year.

Mmmm maybe. Happy New Year to you all.

Pete Hawkins

Our January meeting takes place on January 12th at 8pm in the Institute.

Our speaker will be Stephen Coates who will tell us about the great engineer Joseph Whitworth and his connections with Darley Dale.

It promises to be an extremely interesting lecture and everyone is most welcome whether you are a member or not.

Recycle your old phones

On behalf of the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, can I urge anyone

who was given a new mobile phone for Christmas to recycle their old one.

Bluebell Wood costs £2.5 million to run annual and gets no government support so every penny we raise is vitally important.

There is a box in Tideswell Pharmacy in which you can drop your old phone.

On behalf of the children and their families we help every year, thank you for your support.

Tidza Ramblers Lathkill Dale is the intended destination for January 8th. However there’ll be a local walk if the weather is bad. Meet at Cherry Tree Square at 10 a.m.

On a fine November day the view of Chatsworth from surrounding hills was an excellent setting for our lunch stop. It was the weekend of the Christmas fair and later, as we approached the river bridge, the volume of traffic was immense. The person controlling the situation there stopped cars to let us cross. Despite his security

jacket and Christmas hat he looked familiar. When the boldest amongst us had directly questioned his identity, the Duke of Devonshire posed cheerfully for a photo.

Lunching took up as much time as rambling last month. The Queen Anne at Great Hucklow was a perfect refuge on a rainy December day and our Christmas meal was excellent. We were wet but happy on arrival back in Tideswell.

Tideswell youth excels!

Sunday 18th December. The upstairs hall in the Institute is transformed into

a breathtaking restaurant. Crisp white table cloths, candlelight, Christmas table arrangements - and even a pianist playing a grand piano. The stage is set for a feast.

But a simple feast - a poor world meal in a rich world setting. Water to drink, lentil dahl, rice and chapati, prepared and served not by a top chef and staff, but by some of our own village young people. (It may have been simple, but it was delicious.) It was cooked by teenagers who come week by week to the drop-in at The Shed, behind St John’s Church, and served by the Apprentices, St John’s young people’s group.

Well done, and thank you - it was a beautiful, memorable evening.

The event was in aid of St John’s Christmas projects - NetsNow! which provides mosquito nets to families that cannot afford them (a child dies every 45 seconds from malaria), and Buxton based High Peak Night Stop, which helps local young people in crisis. £300 was raised.

Where there’s muck there’s stress

If you’ve yet to get your head around the NVZ regulations and managing your muck and slurry spreading and storage, help is at hand.

Jude Pealing of Bagshaws will be at Farming Life Centre at Blackwell on the 19th January for one-to-one appointments to answer questions and show you how to make a start on the paperwork.

You can book a place at our free and confidential “NVZ clinic” by calling Andrea or Julia on 01298 85162.

Risky Crinklies

Prim Roberts has lived in Derbyshire for over 19 years. Risky Crinkles is a

diary of her experience as a cancer patient from her diagnosis with cancer of the oesophagus in 2006 up to four years later.

There are few people who are not affected by cancer in some way, whether suffering from it themselves or being close to family or friends diagnosed with it. This is Prim’s experience which she hopes will help others in similar circumstances. An experience which recognises the help and support given by friends and family and by everyone involved in treating, helping and supporting cancer patients.

Prim is keen to donate money to cancer charities, she makes no profit from her sales and so she hopes those who buy will give a little extra so that more can go to a range of cancer and cancer support charities.

Congratulations to all the winners. The next draw will take place at the end of January.

The Tideswell and District Community Association committee would like to thank all the 200+ Club members for their support during the year. The flower troughs around the village have been much admired and the annual Bonfire and Fireworks display was a great success. These could not have been possible without the physical support of a few loyal helpers – the wood collectors, bonfire builders, the ground marshals, refreshment servers, firework display team, not forgetting those who assembled at the Sports Complex next morning to clear away the remains of the exploded fireworks, especially from the football pitch. We must not forget the trough planters and those who delivered the them, or the

householders who looked after them. You may have noticed that the troughs are still around the village , this is because we have had difficulty in securing a team of strong bodies who will man (or woman) handle these heavy containers to return them for emptying and storing back up at the Sports Pavilion.

If you feel you can give a little time to the village by helping or joining the Committee please contact us. You will find us on line at tideswellonline.co.uk with lots of information about what goes on in Tideswell and its District.

WELCOME PACKS

If you new to our village these packs provide you with a lot of practical information and details of activities, clubs, societies, schools, churches and much more. These are available from The Peak District Dairy .

For more information about the 200+ Club , Welcome Packs or how to become an active helper of the associationplease phone Dorothy on 871661 or Judy on 872408

Tideswell Theatre

Come to a show in 2012, Tideswell’s Theatre’s 10th year of bringing

professional theatre, music, dance, comedy and poetry to the village. There will be a mixture of Tideswell Community Players’ productions and visiting shows throughout the year.

To chase away those post Christmas blues, the season continues at 7:30pm on Sunday 22nd January with New Perspectives Theatre Company’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe hit How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers Won the FA Cup. This laugh-out-loud adaptation of J L Carr’s tale will appeal to everyone - not just football lovers! New Perspectives have visited Tideswell many times over the years, most recently with Lark Rise to Candleford, and go from strength to strength. Their Edinburgh Festival sell-out, Farm Boy, has just returned from a successful run in New York.

Is it possible? Could a humble village team really have taken on football’s finest and triumphed? When an enigmatic trainer with revolutionary theories, two of the

best players ever to have disappeared from football’s top flight, and a chairman of Napoleonic ability all find themselves in the same place at the same time, it just might be! This joyous tale of rise of the underdog is retold in a funny and touching new one-man show. Prepare to laugh, prepare to cry, and above all prepare to believe every word of this fun show. This delightful adaptation is one of this year’s [Edinburgh Festival] Fringe highlights. Five Stars. (British Theatre Guide 2011).

Performed at The Old Grammar School - behind the Church. Tickets £9.50 and £7.50 (concessions) on sale at Tideswell Post Office and Litton Shop. Bookings on [email protected] or 01298 871063. Tickets numbers are limited and are already selling well, so make sure you get one soon!

Further information and bookings on [email protected], or 01298 871063. Follow Tideswell Theatre on Facebook and Twitter, or sign up to our emailing list.

Parish Council Matters

Four members of the public attended the December meeting to discuss a variety

of issues. One lady asked for a new street light, but sadly the answer had to be “no”.The council are under pressure to reduce street lighting, rather than increase it. A request from Tideswell Living History group was well received. The group asked that the parish council “adopt” the old BT Telephone box for the princely sum of £1. The box would be used for local information. More details will be discussed at a later date.

The Chairman Philip Swarbrick welcomed new Parish Councillor Gary Newton to the meeting.

Much of the agenda was routine and work which is ongoing and has previously been reported.

The snow clearing machine had been used during the first snow of this winter.

The most important item on the agenda was the fixing of the precept, which is the source of income for the council. The total monies spent from 1st April 2011 to 31st December 2011 is £44,697.78. The requested precept for 2012/13 is £45,000. Councillors all agreed to keep the costs to a minimum, whist maintaining Tideswell’s standards.

During the past year the National Minimum Wage was raised and absorbed by the Council. Monies held in Trust by the council may only be spent on projects which fulfil certain criteria, and only the interest may be spent, never the capital.

The negotiations between the Derbyshire

Dales District Council and the parish council are almost complete regarding the public toilets.

The next Council meeting will be in January 2012.

The Chairman and Council wish all residents a very happy Christmas and a healthy new year.

The Parish Clerk Lesley Bramwell has a new email address for residents to use when contacting the Council: [email protected].

Planning Issues

Planning is important to us all and from time to time parishes and local

communities have concerns about it. So I’m writing as Chair of Planning to say to you all: We all want to improve and we want to improve with all of you, our local communities, our parishes, our critics and those who have had successful outcomes as well. In fact in the last year 85 per cent of planning applications we considered were approved.

The vice chair of the Authority’s Planning committee and I are leading an improvement programme in our planning service, especially focusing on improving customer service and communication providing the most transparent and open planning process.

If you’re worried about a planning case or planning process, don’t hesitate to contact us. Take the direct route, not one through a third party. We offer personal advice through our duty officer system

available every morning and one-to-one advice at planning surgeries in the evenings at various locations in the national park. We have information on planning on our website at www.peakdistrict.go.uk/planning or over the phone on 01629 816200.

Alternatively, you can contact me or other members of the Authority whose details are on our website at www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/members or in ‘ParkLife’, our newsletter which was recently distributed to every home in the national park. We are always happy to hear from you.

I hope you will all make use of the service we are happy to offer you.

Winter Driver Safety checks

Police and partner agencies have been targeting safe driving and vehicle

maintenance on a main peak district route.

A number of police officers from CREST (Casualty Reduction and Enforcement Support Team), roads policing and the local Safer Neighbourhood teams, joined forces with vehicle examiners the DVLA and HM Revenue and Customs.

The vehicles were checked on the A623 at Housley, near Wardlow, on Wednesday, December 14.

Eleven motorists were stopped for not wearing their seatbelts and one driver was pulled up for using their mobile phone.

During the day the DVLA checked almost 930 passing vehicles to see if they were

taxed and insured and HM Revenue and Customs tested vehicles for red diesel.

Six vehicles were found without tax and no vehicles were found using red diesel.

Police also spoke to HGV drivers to advise them about how they can prevent having diesel stolen.

Safer Neighbourhood team Sgt. Andy Wordsworth said: “Road safety can affect the lives of everyone and we often have reports from members of the community about drivers on their mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

“By carrying out initiatives like this we can remind people about their responsibilities when behind the wheel, show that we are targeting those drivers who are putting safety at risk and also provide advice on how people can prevent vehicle related crime.”

The checks took place as part of Operation Safedrive, a countywide partnership initiative set up by CREST to help target community issues around road safety.

To contact your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team call 101, the new non-emergency number for Derbyshire police, or log on to www.derbyshire.police.uk

Tidza Footballer To Play For Buxton

Following a successful appearance for the Bucks as a substitute in a cup match

away at Brigg Town, which Buxton won 1-0, local lad Jack Bradbury has made the step up from Hope Valley League football with Tideswell Utd to the Evo-Stik Premier League. The last local player to do this was Pat Jones, but that was back in the last century.

Jack played his first full game in the Derbyshire Senior Cup tie at the Silverlands on 14 December, in a three-man forward line, the Bucks winning 2-0 to progress to the quarter-finals.

This is quite a large step up: both the Northern Counties (East) League and the NW Counties League (levels 9-10) and the Evo-Stik First Division (level 8) lie between the Hope Valley League and the Evo-Stik Premier (level 7) in the non-league football pyramid.

Jack, who is 18, began the season playing as a forward for Tideswell United FC. He has scored 14 goals in 16 games for Tideswell this season, including two hat-tricks.

He has also recently featured in the newly-formed Buxton Bluestar U19 team which has been competing in the North Midlands U19 League, playing in nine matches and scoring twice.

Buxton FC have not had a good start to the current season and are looking to pull themselves clear of the relegation zone. New manager Scott Maxfield is looking for fresh players to make this happen, so the opportunity for Jack is definitely there.

Tideswell Youth Club

Tideswell Youth Club runs once a week on Wednesdays 7-8.30pm for ages 8+

TYC ended their year with a group trip to Sheffield Ice centre. A mixture of 15 young people and youth workers swapped dry land for the slippery surface and had a great time.

The trip also said goodbye to me, Rachel Kennedy as that was my last day as Youth Engagement Officer within Tideswell. It has been a pleasure and a great experience to work with you all.

Tideswell Youth Club will re-open Wednesday 4th January with Josh Madin as the new Youth Engagement Officer.

MULTI SPORTS SESSIONSSporting Futures Multi Sports sessions have finished for the Christmas Holidays, returning on Tuesday 3rd January indoors at the URC hall.
