From the Editor

Welcome to 2013, the Village Voice’s twentieth year of publication, during

which we have grown from a single sheet of A4 to the current bumper edition. We produce an interactive digital edition which is available online and now new for 2013 we have a website and a Twitter account.

Each month articles from the printed edition will be uploaded to the web site. Older articles will be archived on the site.

The web site allows for commenting on articles (which will be moderated) and where longer articles are sent, the full text can be used instead of the edited version.

Regular contributors can post articles to the website directly, to be held in a queue until ready for publication - if you are one of those, then please contact me and I’ll set you up with an account.

We are also looking for village contributors from Litton, Wheston, Wardlow, Cressbrook, Litton Mill, Great and Little Hucklow. Please contact me for details.

Anyone can register on the site enabling you to post up details of items for sale and also add events to the online calendar.

Our current advertisers will be allowed to add their business details, initially as part of their printed advert fee. Businesses who don’t currently advertise will in time be able to add their details for a small fee. In addition there is space for two adverts at the head and foot of each page. Contact Juliet (872333) if you’d like to advertise here.

The Twitter account (@Village VoiceUK) will be used to post current articles to the twittersphere every four hours or so.

Our new logo designed by graphic designer Greg Walker, will adorn both our printed and online editions. Thanks to Greg for designing this for The Village Voice.

Please let us know what you think and pass the url onto those who may be interested - www.villagevoicetideswell.org.uk.

Poppy Appeal

This year’s British Legion Poppy Appeal has so far raised £1769.86 from the

collection tins (one more to come) and donations from those groups who ordered wreaths. Thank you everyone, including Great Hucklow, Wardlow Mires and Litton, who helped in any way, with collecting, counting, and a big ‘thank you’ to Philip and the Post Office staff for their help with banking. Once again the people of Tideswell and surrounding villages have donated generously to our armed forces, past and present.

The collection is down from Norman’s total last year, but the Derbyshire organiser tells me that this has happened across the county. I have met many new people, had lots of support, and will try not to miss any local businesses out next year. Please contact me (01298 872089) if I missed you and you would like to take part in the Appeal next year.

Xmas recycling tips

Here are some top tips for a greener Christmas:

If Santa has been kind to you, with plenty of new goodies, so why not make space for them by recycling your unwanted items or taking them for reuse at a charity shop?

Once Christmas is over remember you can send your real Christmas tree for composting by cutting it up and placing it in your garden waste bin (or your local household waste recycling centre).

Home composting is a great way of getting rid of all those extra Christmas vegetable peelings, fruit scraps, tea bags, shredded cardboard and paper.

If you’ve received new electrical items, remember unwanted but working ones could be reused by your local furniture project. To find out more about furniture projects. Go to www.derbyshire.gov.uk/recycling.

Broken electrical items can be recycled at your nearest household waste recycling centre. Other schemes and charity shops also take a range of working items for reuse.

Christmas cards may be included within your cardboard recycling collection.

To find our more go to www.derbyshire.gov.uk/recycling.

Shopping Locally

Dear Editor,I was reading this week in the

Village Voice that local businesses feel they are being under used. What about a supermarket (eg. Tesco) style website that allows customers to order goods online and have it delivered in a certain time slot? This could be a joint effort between the local businesses - greengrocers, butchers, dairy and bakery. People do sometimes find it easier to do things online so maybe this

might be a good idea - people could shop local and have a supermarket - one stop shop experience. I, for one, would be very upset at the loss of the local businesses and really hope that none of them face threat of closure.

Wakes News

Happy New Year from the Wakes Committee.

Thank you to all those who made Christmas Eve festivities so fun and enjoyable. Thanks to all the children who made Father Christmas feel so welcome on his visit. He will be back again next year... he has promised!

Tideswell winter evenings are still very much with us, so as we eat the last of the mince pies, the team will be turning their thoughts to warm June days (we hope!) and planning some carnival fun! The team will be meeting this month to start planning Wakes 2013. Further updates will be available soon so please keep your eyes peeled for posters around the village. We will also be launching the new Wakes website! More to follow on that! As always, please get in touch if you would like to contribute your ideas for 2013 - [email protected]

Dear Sir

My wife and I, accompanied by my nine year old nephew, arrived to

begin a weeks holiday in Tideswell. We had arranged to rent Mabel’s cottage on Sherwood Road from 2 December.

On the Wednesday we had planned to drive to Birmingham to visit relatives but noticed that we had two flat tyres on the kerb side of our vehicle, together with a long gouge in the paint work. I immediately informed the police and the cottage owners. I went to Ashford Garage and explained my problem. George told me that he would come down as soon as possible and try and inflate the tyres. I walked back to the cottage and found the police already there. The officer made some enquiries of people living nearby and then left. George arrived and found that both tyres had been punctured deliberately with a sharp object such a dart or sharp screwdriver. He took the vehicle to his garage and told us he would try and get two new tyres and fix them by mid morning the next day. The cost was about 200 pounds.

We have always tried to visit cottages

in the villages not the towns in the UK and this was the first time that we had experienced such a shocking act of vandalism. Why were we targeted?

It was obvious that no other local car parked either side of mine was vandalized . This was clearly a message that “visitors are not welcomed” in that part of Tideswell. If I had parked in a space which someone felt was theirs, they could have asked me to move. This person is a vindictive, malicious and mean spirited character who effectively ruined a weeks holiday in a nice Derbyshire village. We will not be coming back and neither will any of our friends. We have also alerted the cottage letting agents that other visitors will likely expect similar treatment if they park their cars in this area.

Acts like this taint the whole village, but of course most folk would be shocked that this could happen here

I notice that the shop keepers in the village are already struggling for custom, and for visitors to experience this type of vandalism will surely only add to their economic woes.

Tideswell Tradesmen’s Association

HOW IT AFFECTS YOU and WHY YOU SHOULD SUPPORT IT!

1. Trading is the life-force in any community and contributes a major share of its rates.

2. The interest of Traders is local, and that interest contributes in no small measure to your welfare, your social organisations and your general happiness.

3. The Traders of Tideswell are now organised: that is, they have got together with a purpose, formed an Association, and through that Association hope to serve you better than hitherto .

4. They want your moral support so that Tideswell may become a more important TRADING CENTRE, be more self- supporting, and be able to supply your needs more promptly.

5. They realise that every penny spent in Tideswell will lessen hardships and encourage growth of trade within its boundaries. This to you as a private citizen means less rates, directly or indirectly.

6. They realise hours of trading - holidays - and other terms of service need standardising as a guide to you for shopping.

7. They want to make “SHOP IN TIDESWELL” a reality, and promise that with the growth of trade their services to you will improve.

SHOP IN TIDESWELL AND HELP US TO HELP YOU !

Commencing Feb. 3rd, 1936, Traders in Tideswell will close as follows :-

Tideswell Cinema

Continuing our hugely successful season of theatre, ballet and opera live from

London, Tideswell Cinema is pleased to announce that Eugene Onegin will be screened live from Covent Garden at 7 pm on Wednesday 20 February at The George Hotel, Commercial Road Tideswell. An encore screening will take place at 7 pm on Sunday 24 February.

An opera full of poignancy and exquisite sensitivity to the nuances of growing up and wrestling to understand your emotions, Eugene Onegin is an inspiring vehicle for Kasper Holten’s first production for The Royal Opera. Working with the Danish set designer Mia Stensgaard, whose design hallmark is clean, strong images ripe with emotion, and fielding a brilliant cast (including Simon Keenlyside in the title

role), Holten will provide a fresh reading of this classic opera.

‘Lyrical Scenes’ was Tchaikovsky’s description of Eugene Onegin: his tender exploration of a young girl’s awakening passion, her rejection by the aloof Onegin and her ultimate choice of honour over true love is far more intimate in tone than the archetypal grand Russian opera.

Tickets, priced at £12 (£10 concessions), are available from 20 January by calling Tony Wilson on 01298 872379 or by email from [email protected]

At t’flicks

Tideswell Cinema’s choice for January is inspired by true events.

The Whistleblower is to be shown on Thursday 31st January at 7.30 pm in The George, it stars Rachel Weisz as an American police officer who takes a job as a peacekeeper in post- war Bosnia. Her expectations of helping to rebuild a devastated country are dashed when she uncovers a dangerous reality of corruption, cover-up, and intrigue amid a world of private contractors and multinational diplomatic double-talk.

This powerful film also stars Vanessa Redgrave and Benedict Cumberbatch. Guest members are welcome (£4.75), to take seats after 7.15 pm.

Tidza’s British Champion

Tideswell’s Steve Hawkins added to the village’s sporting prowess last

month when his White Water Rafting team became British Champions.

Steve’s career on the water began at Matlock Canoeing Club, but he turned to White Water Rafting two years ago and in 2011 was in the GB Junior Squad at the World Championships in Costa Rica. Winning the British Championships means that Steve and the rest of the team will represent GB at next years World’s.

Steve works at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham.

Tideswell Theatre: 2013

The first show of the new year is on 28th February, bringing Zulu,

spectacular colourful African dance and warmth, to the atmospheric setting of Tideswell Church in winter.

Zulu is a theatre company, a band, a dance troupe and a group of storytellers rolled into one. Direct from Durban, South Africa, the individual members of Zulu have previously performed in the UK as part of The Mighty Zulu Nation and in the West End for The Lion King. They have performed around the world for royalty and senior government alike, including the Queen and Nelson Mandela.

Staged in colourful authentic costumes, this energetic show combines a wide range of musical styles and presents a spectacle of rich African culture. Including Maskandi (traditional Zulu music), afro-jazz and traditional Zulu songs and psalms, the cast will also use various genres of traditional dance and dramatisation to bring their exciting history to Tideswell.

Parish Council Matters

At the December Tideswell Parish Council meeting no members of the

public attended.

Chairman councillor Philip Swarbrick welcomed our newest parish councillor, Jennifer Bower to her first official meeting.

The financial liabilities of the council were all settled. Cheques were paid in the usual manner whereby two councillors check the invoices and another two councillors sign. The cheques are countersigned by the Chairman.

The balance in the current account for this financial year was £25,848.16 up to 23rd November.

The finances are on track and a special meeting has been called to review finances and to set the precept. (A precept is the amount of money collected by the district council on behalf of the parish council, and is used solely by the parish council.) The precept must be applied for and the council takes seriously its role in managing accounts for the betterment of Tideswell residents. The council awards grants each September, to local organisations who apply. Each application must be accompanied by a balance sheet from the organisation, in order that the Council might fulfil its statutory duty.

A meeting between the chairman and Derbyshire Dales DC environmental chief Peter Foley, is to take place regarding the public toilets, and further information will be brought to the next meeting. Planning applications and decisions from PDNP were received.

The parish council wishes all Tideswell residents a happy, healthy, peaceful and safe Christmas and New Year in 2013.

Sue Barber on behalf of Tideswell PC.

Litton Parish Council

The following is a precis of a newsletter sent from Litton Parish Council to

residents in December 2012.

As you may know there have been a number of resignations.

Anne Evans, John Evans and myself have not resigned. We will be holding a public meeting in March to which all residents, including children and young people will be invited. We will tell you more about how we want to work and listen to your views. March seems a long way off and we would have liked to move on with this agenda a lot more quickly. Firstly, this is a new way of working for the council and our information is not currently in a form which can be presented easily for discussion. Secondly, preparing this information will take some time and as the clerk to the council, Naomi McFadyen, has resigned we will have to recruit temporary help.

In the meantime business will continue as normal and I would draw your attention to the following:

• Extraordinary council meetings will be held in December and early February. Information about these will soon be on parish council notice boards.

• There are four vacancies on the parish council and these need to be filled. We will publish arrangements for filling the vacancies also on the notice boards.

Sadly over the last few months there have been disagreements between councillors about the way the council is run and about

the role of councillors. The focus has been, mainly, on two problematic areas.

The three remaining councillors asked for more information about the budget. Also we were concerned about the way some decisions had been taken and asked to see the documents which set out how decisions had been made. The other councillors would not support our requests and so the information was not forthcoming.

The other issue arose when we challenged the prevailing view among councillors that individual councillors could not talk to residents about council business and could not hold meetings with each other without the clerk being present. We could not accept this as right or reasonable. Our view that councillors can do these things with certain caveats has been confirmed by the Derbyshire Association of Local Councils.

It has been a difficult and distressing time but we are not ‘in crisis’ as the article in the December edition of the Village Voice suggests. We know where we are going, although we might not get everything right over the next few months and we apologise for this in advance.

We will advertise the March public meeting through our next newsletter and on notice boards. In the meantime if you have any ideas about how we might help you then email me on [email protected].

catchy rhythm. But crowds aren’t ideal for long and it was good to get back into walking rhythm.

There were two walks this month, the destination of the first was determined by the prospect of mulled wine and other goodies at the Cressbrook. It was my first visit to the Cressbrook and I thought that it was a lovely place. It was a great bonus not to arrive drenched, as we had done last year, at the Queen Anne in Hucklow for Christmas lunch. Rucksacks rarely contain festive head-gear but on this occasion one did! Suit-ably attired we had an excellent meal.

You could be right to think that this group needs to focus more on walking in the future rather than wining and dining but really all that matters is that we enjoy ourselves.

Thank You

December saw carol singers from our churches outside the Co-op, at

Nicholson Court and in our three pubs, performing (hopefully!) for the enjoyment of those listening, but also in aid of projects in the Middle East.

We would like to thank all who donated some money, which has enabled us to send £100 to Embrace. Here is an example of an Embrace project.

“Yazan is nine years old and has spina bifida. His family survives on just £110 a month, so when Yazan needed a new wheelchair, there was no way they could afford one.

Thanks to Embrace’s support of the Bethlehem Arab Rehabilitation Society, Yazan received a specially adapted wheelchair free of charge. He’s doing so much better at school now. One child given an opportunity in Bethlehem.”

BIN-O-PHOBIAIt happened one fine Monday,On alighting from the busI heard a low pitched rumbleAnd asked, what was the fuss?

Then I spied blue Iidded wheeliesLined up row on row,Folk performing a tribal danceAs they trundled bins to and fro.

They're in alleys, streets and gardens,Adorning many a home,Some have theirs on proud displayA futuristic garden gnome.

Now our cans, bottles and plastic,Once kept sacredly apart,Can be squashed, then tossed without a careInto the same new cart.

Oh, we ’re lucky to have collectionsIn the UK, there’s no doubt,But we can’t help feeling angryWhen our full bins are missed out!

Chasing the refuse lorryHas become such an obsession -Could it replace the Tideswell MorrisIn our torchlight procession?

Yes! The brand new Wakes committeeCould save itself from stress,By staging a competitionFor best wheelie fancy dress.

So forget those red collection tins,For now each lass and laddieCan process whilst rattling penniesIn a neat green kitchen caddy.

Well, I’ve studied the complex leaflet,Now maybe I'll take a degree,Enrol up at Derby Uni.Do a course in Binology.

Or perhaps I'll decide to end it all,Give up, call it a day-Jump head first into my binAnd throw myself away.

That plastic bin will not rot down,So in future some time team boffinMay dig it up and think I’m inAn ancient, mobile coffin.

Tideswell Living History

2012 has been a successful year for us. We secured funding from the Big

Lottery, held three wonderful ‘Memory Days’ and we started to interview and record local people. We thank you all who have shown interest and hope you will continue to do so throughout the next year.

During Wakes Week 2013 we will be putting on a performance depicting the memories we have so far gathered from you. This is an exciting time for us all and we are asking for your support and hope you will become involved in this production – Look out for posters and information early in the New Year.

Have you all checked out our website – You can listen to some of the interviews we have done – go to http://tideswelltales.wordpress.com and check out the Tideswell Tales.

Listen to Mr Barnsley from Litton going to the village shop for a ‘ha’porth of aniseed balls’ in the early 1930s and seeing the bombs stacked on the grass verge in Flagg before they built the underground bomb store at Harpur Hill.

There’s lot more to listen to and you could add to these – if you would like to share one of your memories please contact us on 01298 872285.

A Happy New Year to you all from TLHG.

Gill Adams

Peak Volumes

Just in case you hadn't noticed (and you can't really have missed the never-

ending stream of boxes and bags and piles of books), Tideswell will be getting Peak Volumes, its very own second-hand bookshop. The shop will be at Madeira House, previously the Cathedral Gallery, just opposite the church and between the Post Office and Parlour Blue, and behind the counter will be Tim Dudley, who used to have a second-hand bookshop in Bamford.

We are now all moved in - thank you so much to all our very willing helpers, their cars, and their never-ending supplies of boxes, and thank you to all of Tideswell for our wonderfully warm welcome.

We hope you have spotted the wonderful window display by the very talented Tideswell resident Fiona Rogers, and have worked out the themes of the four windows.

Creating the shop itself will be a long job – Tim has over 50,000 books to sort, and an awful lot of shelves need to be built. So, we won't open until the spring (which isn't actually that long now…), but we will try and keep you entertained with some more window displays, and regular news in the small window, in the Village Voice and electronically on the blog at www.peakvolumes.com, on Facebook and on Twitter (@PeakVolumes).
