The VBS task force is very pleased that the congregation agreed to provide the funds for a top notch VBS this Summer. Our first meeting of the year was enormously productive as we have procured the services of Diane Meyer, an experienced LCMS church worker who will help coordinate the effort. Please save the date – Jun 13-16. Our goal is 70 kids and 100% involvement of the congregation. Anyone interested in early registration please contact Dawn Rolf or Naomi Teske. Please look for a signup sheet in the Narthex which will provide opportunities to help.
Getting to Communion and Back
Plus some questions of casuistry regarding the Sacrament
Since we have recently combined the two Sunday services Communion takes a bit longer. In an effort
to expedite the distribution of the Sacrament the ushers have been given some new directions. Here
they are for all of you so that you can know what is expected of the ushers and so that you can work
with them in the process of ushering people to the altar in an orderly way.
1. Send no more than twelve and no less than ten people per table. This includes children unless they
are held by the parents.
2. Send the people to the altar when the elders begin serving the cup to the previous table. The people
can stand in the pew for a minute as they wait. This means that there is less time between each
table.
3. Send people to the altar on the left side during the distribution of the sacrament to the elders and
pastor. Just make sure that we have finished singing the Agnus Dei.
4. Try not to divide families. Rather then divide a family of six when there are only three spots, simply
skip them, send up two or three and return to the family later. This means that you might have to
plan ahead as you send people to the altar.
5. If guests ask you (the usher or any member for that matter) if they may commune please refer
them to the communion card where it says to talk to the pastor. This encourages guests to think
about these matters before the service begins and it encourages our members to plan to talk to
the pastor if they are bringing family or friends with them to church.
There are a couple of questions which people have asked about going to communion which may also
have occurred to others.
1. Q. I love to sing and it invariably happens that we are singing my favorite hymn when it’s my time
to commune. What can I do? A. Bring the hymnbook with you and sing while you are waiting in
the aisle.
2. Q. What type of kids should be brought to the altar? A. Little kids. It makes them eager to receive
the Sacrament when they are older and it models a devout behavior. Older kids or adults should not
go to the altar unless they intend to commune.
3. Q. But isn’t there a blessing they receive at the altar. A. Yes, but it is really no different than the
Benediction or the Invocation which everyone gets in the pew. The reason kids go to the altar is to
model for them the importance of the Sacrament.
4. Q. Are there any prayers of preparation I should pray before Communing? A. The best preparation
is the Confession and Absolution but there are also some good prayers. Try the prayer on the inside
cover of the LSB or the prayer on p. 308 of the LSB entitled “For right reception of the Lord’s
Supper.”Another option is to read what the catechism says about Holy Communion which is
written on pages 326 and 327 of the hymnal. Prayers to speak after the Supper are written in your
bulletin.
5. Q. Some people make the sign of the cross right before they receive the sacrament. Is that a
good thing to do? A. Martin Luther certainly thought so and taught so. The sign of the cross is
intended to remind us of our baptism and at the altar we are reminded that He who began a
good work in us at our baptism is completing this work in us through the Lord’s Supper.
If you have other questions about the distribution of the sacrament or any other questions relating to it,
then ask them of me and I will answer them in next month’s newsletter of course without revealing the
source of the question.

Services in the month of January
January 9, 2011. Baptism of our Lord. This Sunday is traditionally the story of the
baptism of Christ which teaches us that Christ through His baptism began his work of
salvation and that we through ours are connected with his salvation. Further this text
shows us the Holy Trinity and the wonderful work of God in our salvation.
January 16, 2011. The second Sunday after Epiphany. The story of Christ
changing water into wine (John 2:1-11) should be one of your favorite Bible stories
not because it is a strong text which shows that Christ blesses marriage and the
consumption of wine but more importantly because through this miracle Christ gave a
clear proof that he is the promised Christ who has come to shower all of God’s
blessings on his people.
January 23, 2011. The third Sunday after Epiphany. Christ worked two impressive
healing miracles as told in this Sunday’s gospel lesson, Matthew 8:1-13. In each he
shows what He wants our faith in Him to be like. He wants us to believe that he is
willing and that he is able to save and forgive us.
January 30, 2011. The fourth Sunday after Epiphany. The gospel lesson is the
story of Jesus calming the raging sea. In the story Jesus tells his disciples and us
“don’t be afraid.” But he is not content simply to talk. He also provides a reason why
we can trust his encouragement never to fear.
February 6, 2011. The Fifth Sunday after Epiphany. This Sunday is actually pretty
rare since Epiphany rarely has five Sundays. This year Easter is very late and we are
treated to a text which tells us about the church – the parable of the good seed and the
weeds. It’s a lesson that leaves judgment to God and tells us to be patient in
attempting to understand the motives and faith of others
Thank you to all the musicians that sang and/or played an
instrument or organized music during the holiday season. It is amazing how beautiful the orchestra before Christmas Eve
sounded without even practicing. Just a tribute to the talent
that we at Glory of Christ have in our members. We are truly
blessed. All of the additional singing and playing has really
been great and is appreciated. It is special that you are willing to share your talents with the other members in our church.
