FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH HOMECOMING
The First Baptist Church of Ashland was founded 125 years
ago. The original church cost $1,722 to construct. The cur-
rent church was built in 1905, at a cost of $9,200--including
furnishings. The Christian Education building was added in
1994, costing $275,000. The tornado of April 1999, nearly
demolished the addition, but it has been rebuilt and is in use
not only by the church, but many area groups and family
gatherings as well. A "Homecoming" celebration is being
planned, and everyone is invited to attend. The Kick-off is
planned for Sunday, January 23, with "The Chosen Ones," an
area gospel group singing at both the 10:30 a.m. service and
a concert at 2 p.m. Rev. Wayne Brackett, pastor from 1957-
1961 plans to attend that day,as do Rev. David and Margie
Holland, who has served as interm pastor two different times.
A potluck will be enjoyed at noon. On Saturday, January 29,
the gospel groups from the Athens area, whom many of you
have enjoyed in the past at the annual fish fry, will bring us
their music in the late afternoon. A Bar-B-Q dinner will be
served that evening, as others from the area, as well as visi-
tors, add their songs to the festivities. Former pastor, Ken
and Millie Dunn will be here for the week-end. We are hoping
to convince him to blend his voice with others from our
church. The Hollands will be here, as well as Rev. Lucas
Dunn, Ken & Millie's son, who is a pastor in the Quad Cities
area, and Rev. Dustin Fulton, who received his early Bible
training in our church. Final plans will be made soon. Call the
church office, check with a member, or watch for fliers in the
area to learn the details. Come join the fun as we celebrate
our heritage.

The State Superintendent of Education has ap-proved the petition to form a consolidated dis-trict between A-C Central and Virginia school districts. The approval of the petition will allow the submission of the proposition at the regular scheduled election on April 5, 2011. The for-malities have been completed and the consoli-dation referendum will be on the April ballot!!!
Also on the April ballot will be candidates for the proposed consolidated school board (7 seats) along with candidates for the Virginia school board (6 seats open) and the A-C Central school board (4 seats open). This will be a bit confusing for voters as candidates may be run-ning for both the proposed consolidated school board and their respective school boards. The COT and the CARE Group plan on educating the public about this and also providing sample bal-lots at the public meetings.
School board candidates have submitted their petitions. There are 13 candidates running for 7 open seats on the proposed consolidated school board ballot. The 6 Virginia candidates are Terry Bell, Kara Lynch, Lennie Moore, Amy Parlier, Thad Walker and Matt Werner. The 7 A-C Central candidates are Jennifer Allen, Scot Atwood, Scott Boston, Jeremy Garner, Keith Gregory, Todd Jokisch and Karen Arthalony Walle.
There are 5 candidates vying for the 6 open seats on the Virginia school board. Four of the candidates are current board members - Terry Bell, Gary Hish, Kara Lynch and Matt Werner; Amy Parlier is running for the first time.
The A-C board has 4 open seats and 5 candi-dates running for school board. Three of the candidates are current board members - Scot Atwood, Scott Boston and Jeremy Garner; Keith Gregory and Karen Arthalony Walle are running as first time school board candidates.

The picture to the left shows a portion of the “baskets” that were put together by the churches of the Ashland community for Thanksgiving. This has been an ongoing project for a long time, and is just as important today as when it first was started. Our thanks to all who donated money and time to put it all together and most importantly thanks to those willing to receive a helping hand - you make the effort so rewarding. -pdh
Friends,
This article is reproduced from a book I’ve been reading called
“100 Favorite Bible Verses”. I hope you find it as encouraging
as I did.
See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the Earth,
waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.
You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the
Lord is at hand.
James 5: 7-8
God’s timing is always perfect. He parted the Red Sea when his
people needed it most – when they were trapped between the
rushing waters and an approaching army. God allowed the wa-
ter to flow again, but only after Moses and the Israelites had
made it safely across. God provided what the people needed at
the precise moment that it would make the greatest difference.
From a human vantage point, it isn’t always easy to recognize
that opportune moment. Waiting for God’s answer, when your
own internal timer has already gone off, can make you feel as if
God isn’t listening or he simply doesn’t care. When you find
yourself in that situation, take a lesson from this important verse in James and put yourself in a farmer’s shoes. You can’t rush a
perfect harvest or an answer to prayer. As a farmer waits for
the fruit of his labor, he doesn’t just sit around complaining
about how long the growing season is. He continues to work.
He trusts God, and his patience grows right along with his fruit.
James provides a valuable tip for those who wait. He advises
you to
establish your heart, which means to “to firmly plant your life
and expectations in the fertile soil of God’s truth.” There is a
bountiful harvest as certain as the fulfillment of God’s promises:
the Lord will return; the hard times you face will end; and God
will answer your prayers when the time is right.
The image of a patient farmer provides an encouraging visual
picture for prayer. Picture every prayer as a seed planted in
God’s will. As you wait, picture them ripening, trusting in God’s
perfect harvest time.
Have a great January! See you in February!

God created the Heavens and Earth - all you see, all you don't see. Earth was a soup of nothing-ness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. God's Spirit brooded like a bird above the wa-tery abyss. God spoke: "Light!" And light appeared. God saw that light was good and separated light from dark. God named the light Day, he named the dark Night. It was evening, it was morn-
ing - Day One.
God spoke: "Sky! In the middle of the waters; separate water from water!" God made sky. He
separated the water under sky from the water above sky. And there it was: he named sky the Heavens; It was evening, it was morning - Day Two.
Then God said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear"; and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good. It was evening, it was morning - Day
Three
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the
earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. It was evening it was morning – Day Four.

CARE GROUP MEMBERSHIP DRIVE To fund support of the upcoming consolidation referendum in April, the CARE Group is holding a membership drive. In support of the Committee of Ten’s goal of passing the consolidation referendum between A-C Central and Virginia School Districts, the funds collected will go toward promotion materials such as fliers, posters, yard signs and postage costs.
We will be offering 2-year memberships to the CARE Group for individuals, for a family or business. The CARE Group is a strong supporter of the consolidation referendum be-tween our school districts. We hope you agree that passage of the referendum in April will provide the foundation to create an outstanding school district in which to educate our children of eastern Cass County. The CARE Group thanks you for your continued support.
