Waste management in Latvia -I

Latvia: area - 64,589 km2; population - 2,366 thousand people.

AdministrationThe territory of Latvia is divided into 26 districts and 7

cities of state importance. There are 70 towns and around 470 rural

municipalities in the districts.

Waste management in Latvia -II

Solid waste generation - about 1,342,000 t/year, including:municipal waste: about 650,000 ton/yeardemolition waste: about 125,000 ton/yearnon-hazardous industrial waste: about 475,000

ton/year, including 260,000 t wooden wastehazardous industrial waste: about 67,000

ton/yearhealth care waste: about 2,000 ton/year

Waste management in Latvia -IIIWaste treatment:

Reuse / recycling - 342,000 t/year or 25% packaging waste - 150,000 t/year; wooden waste - 140,00 ton/year, demolition waste - 40,000 ton/year; others - about 12,000 t/year.

Waste disposal - the rest 75% or about 1,000,000 t/year
