The United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS) offers the opportunity for young men and women who have just completed their junior year of high school to visit the Naval Academy for one week during the summer. Summer Seminar teaches you about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics, and professional training play equally important roles in developing our nation’s leaders. Students will experience all aspects of the Naval Academy including the academic program and midshipman life. Furthermore, students will receive an overview of Navy and Marine Corps service options. If you think you are interested in pursuing an appointment to one of the nation’s service academies and serving your country as an officer, you should seriously consider attending the Naval Academy’s Summer Seminar. Three sessions of NASS are May 31 - June 5; June 7- June 12; and June 14 - June 19. Tuition for NASS 2013 was $350. The tuition for 2014 is still being determined. The tuition covers room and board, as well as a variety of materials. Each student is responsible for arranging transportation to and from the Naval Academy. Students should plan on bringing extra cash for snacks and souvenirs. The application period opens on January 16 and closes on March 31st. This is a competitive entry program because interest outweighs the Naval Academy’s hosting capacity. Learn more about the program and apply on the Admissions page of the Naval Academy web site, http://www.usna.edu.

Scobey Hosting 3-On-3 Hoop Event February 9 Scobey Alumni Foundation, Inc. (SAFI) is sponsoring a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Sunday, February 9, in both gymnasiums at the Scobey School. The half-court tourney with four courts in the new gym and two in the small gym is for girls and boys in grades 3-8 and the entry deadline for the first six teams in each division is Saturday, February 1. Entries, at $80 per team with checks made out to SAFI, can be mailed to: Dixie Halverson, P.O. Box 425, Scobey, MT 59263. To enter by phone or for more information call Dixie Halverson (406-487-5471) or Cale Handran (406-783-8988). All net profit will go toward the SAFI Swimming Pool Project, which has already raised $846,128.17 in private funding in the past 55 weeks to build a new swimming pool in Scobey’s Roseland Park. The tourney is a four-game guarantee—three pool play games followed by a single elimination tournament. Awards will be presented to the champions of each division (divisions by grade and gender; grades will be combined if necessary). The rules include:•TEAMS — Teams can have from 3 to 5 players; players can

play on only one team. Oldest player on team determines division. Each team must provide adult scorekeepers.

•GAME START AND DURATION — Games will run every half hour on the half hour; games will start and stop on the main game clock. Games will be 20 minutes long, or upon one team scoring 21 points. Possession will be determined by a coin flip. There will be three timeouts per game—at 10 minutes remaining, 5 minutes and 2 minutes. Each time out will be 1 minute long. the buzzer will sound at the start and stop of each segment of the game and the clock will start immediately after the buzzer.

•SCORING — Baskets will be worth 1 point, 2 points if the shot is made from beyond the 3-point arc.

•FOULS — All fouls will be called by the official on the court.•CHANGE OF POSSESSION — Balls must be “taken

back” anywhere beyond the 3-point arc on any change of possession.

•CHECK-IN — After a violation or score, the offense must “check in” the ball from the top of the key. The offensive player receiving checked ball must pass the ball in, or dribble outside the arc before passing, but may not shoot the ball.

•OVERTIME — Possession will be determined by a coin toss. Game is sudden death (first team to score wins).

“In this world there’s two types of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig?” A free 2014 calendar featuring wheat pests of Montana is now available at Montana State University and MSU Extension offices around the state. Titled “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” the calendar shows Pesticide Education Specialist Cecil Tharp on the cover with a noxious weed in his mouth and his hands at his sides, holding his weapons against weeds and insects. Among the “good” – featured in January, April, July and October – is MSU’s Schutter Diagnostic Lab which processes more than 2,000 samples every year to identify diseases, insects, plants and mushrooms. Among the “bad” – showcased in February, May, August and November -- is the evolution of agricultural pests to survive control measures. Among the “ugly,” seen in the remaining months, are improper pesticide use and herbicide resistance. “The management of pests can be a daunting task, complicated by multiple management options, a wide array of pests, complicated safety issues and revenue losses,” Tharp said. “The

calendar was a parody of the ‘Good, Bad and Ugly’ movie starring

Clint Eastwood because pest managers are in a showdown

that they need to be prepared for through education and good

management decisions.” Each month in the

calendar contains colorful photos of subjects that include MSU students and staff, noxious weeds, insect pests, sheep, Montana fields, and MSU research centers. A memorable year, 2014 is the 100-year anniversary of

the creation of the national Cooperative

Extension System. In addition to other significant

dates, the calendar notes that “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” movie premiered in Italian theaters on Dec. 15, 1966 and Dec. 23, 1967 in U.S. theatres. The calendar project was spearheaded by MSU Extension Plant Pathology Specialist Mary Burrows and produced by MSU faculty and staff with a grant from the Montana Wheat and Barley Committee. For a free calendar, visit your local MSU Extension offices or contact Burrows at [email protected] or (406) 994-7766.

Reds’ NFL Playoff Winners Some amazingly good wildcard games kicked off the NFL post season. The Glasgow Reds’ gameboard winners for $50 each were Amanda Bryson and Jim Seiler as the Indianapolis Colts stunned the Kansas City Chiefs 45-44 on Saturday; Jeannie Compton and Mike Fischer were the book holders as San Francisco outlasted Green Bay 23-20. The other two wildcard games had the New Orleans Saints sneaking past the Philadelphia Eagles 26-24 and the San Diego Chargers still alive with their dominating 27-10 performance over the Cincinnati Bengals. Saturday’s NFC game features the Saints (11-5) at the Seattle Seahawks (13-3) at 2:35 p.m. on FOX. The Seahawks

spanked New Orleans 34-7 on December 2nd. The AFC game has the Colts (11-5) at the New England Patriots (12-4) at 6:15 on CBS. Sunday’s action begins at 11:05 a.m. on FOX as the 49ers (12-4) try to tame the Carolina Panthers (12-4) in the NFC. The Panthers were victorious 10-9 in their November meeting. Last big game of the weekend kicks off at 2:40 p.m. on CBS and is an AFC West rival as the Chargers are in Denver to take on the Broncos. The Broncos (13-3) and Chargers (9-7) split on the season with Denver winning 28-20 in San Diego, and San Diego winning 27-20 in Denver. If these games are as good as the Wildcard Weekend, NFL fans are in for a treat as long as the wind doesn’t blow the satellite dish off the roof.
