Happy New Year!

How are those New Year’s Resolutions com-ing? Yeah, me too. That’s why I stopped mak-ing them. What we really need is a New Year’s REVOLUTION. I’m not talking about a military coup or some sort of public uprising. But a spiri-tual revolution.

A revolution is defined as a “radical and pervasive change”. Jesus came to Earth not only to save us from our sins, but to show us how to live godly lives. Now that’s revolutionary!

So how do we make such a revolutionary change? Romans 12:1-2 urges us to offer ourselves to God as “living sacrifices” and to be “transformed” (radi-

cally changed) into His image. Therefore, the first step is to recognize Jesus for who He is – the Son of God. Second, acknowledge that only by sur-rendering your life to Him as Savior will your sins be forgiven. Finally, model your life after His and let the Holy Spirit teach and empower you to be a faithful disciple.

I wish for you a blessed 2012. Let it begin with your personal spiritual revolution.

God bless you!

How to Volunteer to Serve a MealIn 2010, The Salvation Army Central Arkansas Area Command spent $91,874.50 feeding Little Rock’s homeless. Small groups volunteering to purchase, prepare, and serve one meal per month at our shelter would make a BIG IMPACT.

WHAT TO EXPECT • A kitchen manager will be available to answer

your questions and help coordinate. • When you arrive, be sure each individual in your

group knows his/her assignment. Here’s a sug-gested assignment list depending on the size of your group:

1. Assign 1-4 people on the serving line. 2. One-three people rinsing, sanitizing, drying,

and restacking dishes. 3. One-three people filling cups with ice and

refilling drinks. Our staff usually provides water as well as sweetened and unsweetened

tea during lunch and dinner. 4. As the dining room begins to empty, volun-

teers on the serving line and those refilling drinks can begin wiping down the tables with bleach-water, stacking the chairs, and sweeping & mopping.

• We will provide you with hair nets and plastic gloves. Please wash hands frequently.

• The entire meal-service process should take no longer than two hours.

• If your group chooses to provide the meal, please prepare enough to serve 200 guests. Obviously, we can never anticipate how many guests we will feed, but preparing for 200 usually ensures that we will not run out of food before the end of the meal.

College Scholarships in Memory ofMajors Wise and Brittle:

Application Deadline - February 15, 2012The Philip Wise and Richard Brittle Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Major Philip Wise and Major Richard Brittle who were Salvation Army officers from Central Arkansas.

Major Philip Wise was tragically taken from us on Christmas Eve 2009 in North Little Rock, Arkansas as he was wrapping up Christmas kettles for the year. Major Wise had a desire to help young people with an interest in music develop their skills for the purpose of evangelism and worship of God.

Major Richard Brittle was the Area Commander for New Orleans, LA when Hurricane Katrina paralyzed that city. He and his wife cared for the men, women, and children in their shelter for several days as they awaited their rescue from the flooded region. During this time, Major Brittle was attacked by a microscopic parasite that would eventually become cancerous and take his life two years later ( January 5, 2008) while he was the Area Commander in Central Arkansas.

It is in their memory that one music scholarship, and one general education scholarship be awarded annually to low-income college students from Central Arkansas. The maximum amount for each scholarship is $1,500.

Requirements for ConsiderationTo qualify for consideration of these scholarships the applicants must:

1) Be a resident of one of the following counties in Arkansas: Pulaski, Lonoke, Saline, or White.

2) Be accepted into a post high school educational institution.

3) Submit a one page essay explaining why they qualify for this scholarship.

Essays can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to the attention of Major Jim Taylor at 1111 West Markham, Little Rock, AR 72201.

Upon returning from the Christmas holiday, staff at The Salvation Army found a letter from Santa with a special gift. According to the letter, “a very good boy named Mason Connery” asked Santa for “money to give to The Salvation Army... to help those less fortunate during the Christmas Season.”

Unfortunately, we have no return address for Mason and no way to let him know that Santa fulfilled his Christmas wish. We would like to thank Mason for his thoughtfulness and wish him a blessed 2012.
