It is my honor to serve as your president again this year. With the Board of Directors that I have, it will be hard to screw it up.

I hope your holiday season started as well as mine. The club’s holiday party got my season off to a flying start. Many thanks to Nedra Rummell for pulling it all together, more details and pictures on page 10.

Our first big event of 2015 will be our visit to the San Diego Zoo on 11 January. The price is right and the company couldn’t be better although some do smell a bit (I’m referring to the animals). Seats are limited; sign up before it is too late. A drive and lunch has been planned for February; details of that are on page 8.

The new Board of Directors is now in place and is beginning to plan events for 2015. Any suggestions about new events are welcome. Although 1st VP Bob Proctor has done a spectacular job with our social schedule, help is always appreciated. Anyone with new ideas or who is willing to help or coordinate events for the year, please contact Bob.

If you have not already submitted your membership renewal, please do so ASAP. Don’t forget to fill out your Member Interest Survey, especially the part concerning club support that you are willing to provide. We really do read those things.

Have you noticed that the newsletter gets better with every issue? The pictures are clearer, the pages are glossy, and our cost of production has not increased. Next time you see Jim Hallameyer, give him a pat on the back for a job well done and Rod Melendez for his efforts to get the issues in the mail on time and to the correct addresses.

I hope your new year starts off with a bang and I hope to see you at many events in 2015.

George

Holiday PartySaturday, December 6, 2014

Article by George KleinPhotos by Roger McDonald

The Holiday Party was a resounding success! Over 82 people attended, including members and spouses/significant others. The Holidays are a festive time to say the least. Add a well planned event by Nedra Rummell, some fine dining and danc-ing to a live band, a little fine wine and a great venue like a private room at the Sheraton La Jolla and you have the recipe for a wonderful evening.

Tom Krefetz was presented the newly refurbished Tuchscher trophy for his 1938 Jaguar 3.5L SS100. Ed Soens, a long time member who had dropped out of the club, but has recently rejoined, provided a little history. Bill Tuchscher, a long time member, passed away in 1977. Ed and Randy Prine decided to initiate the trophy in his honor. Ed purchased the trophy which, since 1977, has been awarded to any car at least 20 years old that attains a perfect score of 100 points at our An-nual Concours’ de Elegance. Since we had run out of space to identify the awardees, Jim Hallameyer redesigned the tro-phy to accommodate the new winners. That perpetual trophy remains in the Club show case at the Jaguar dealership on Convoy Street in San Diego.

Holiday Party Host Nedra Rummell, Tom Sprunk and LaShel Montgomery

LaShel Montgomery, Grant Rummell’s daughter, accepted the Most Valuable Member trophy on behalf of her father. Nedra accepted a Service Award on behalf of Grant for his many years of dedicated service to the club. Jay Stamets was also acknowledged with an award for his years of service.

San Diego Automotive Museum

I recently had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Paula Brandes who is the Executive Director of the San Diego Automotive Museum. Our Jaguar Club Representative to the museum, Pete Pickslay, introduced Paula to our Board of Directors last year. Since then, I have been anxious to revisit the museum and interview Paula about the refined direction the museum is taking.

Paula’s message is that the San Diego Automotive Museum is currently experiencing a renewal of purpose designed to ap-peal to a wider audience. No longer is the museum merely a collection of cars for ‘gearheads’. The museum now chooses to present exhibits that relate to our cultural experiences and family memories regarding our own love affair with the automo-bile and all things related to it. This purpose is best expressed in their mission statement:

“The mission of the San Diego Automotive Museum is to tell the story of the social and technological past, present, and future of motorized vehicles through its collections, exhibitions, and educational programs.”

Americans began a love affair with the automobile in 1903 when Henry Ford founded his car company employing the assembly line method for the production of cars. Mass production meant people could afford his Model T Fords, which were designed to be basic transportation, available in any color the customer wanted just so long as it was black. Price was a mere $300. Soon the Chevrolet Model 290 was introduced. It cost, as you may have already guessed, only $290. The Industrial Revo-lution was about to give Americans the freedom of traveling longer distances to places they had never seen before.

The Lead Sleds were oneof the most popular recentexhibits. All came fromprivate individuals willingto lend their cars.

With the automobile came a need for new infrastructure. Roads, bridges and fueling stations were built. A whole new set of regulations regarding the ownership and operation of motor vehicles needed to be developed. Our love affair with the automobile is now over one hundred years old. An entire industry has grown up around our transportation needs and travel experiences. The automobile rapidly became more than a utilitarian object to be used for going to work or transporting goods. We soon developed fond memories of traveling by car to visit other places and people. In time, it has become more than just a love affair. It has become a way of modern life in America.

If you like bikes, they have them on display.

The San Diego Automotive Museum sees more than 100,000 visitors each year. Its prime location in Balboa Park affords accessibility to locals and tourists alike. The paid staff of twelve is assisted by 85 volunteers who perform a variety of tasks from acting as docents, setting up exhibits, working in the library or store, and even restoring cars. The museum has a large stor-age and restoration facility in the south bay area of San Diego. About 80 cars in various stages of restoration are owned by the museum. The collection is rolled over periodically as cars are acquired, exhibited and sold. Privately owned vehicles are the mainstay of most exhibits which typically last about three or four months. These cars are provided largely by the various car clubs in the region. Multiple exhibits are on display at any given time alongside one main exhibit. The main exhibit just ended featured the Lead Sleds you see in some of the photos accompanying this article. Exhibits are ‘themed’ and cars are presented as a piece of history. The museum loves original cars for their exhibits. They want to appeal to our desire to re-member our own experiences growing up with the automobile.

Lead Sleds and rock ‘n roll forever!

The museum’s own staff re-stored this Jaguar XK 120.

The museum receives financial support from memberships, admissions, sponsored events, the City of San Diego, the County of San Diego, foundations and trusts and donations. They have 501(c) 3 status with the Internal Revenue Service which means your donations are tax deductible. The building in Balboa Park is on a 25 year lease from the City of San Diego.

The store has a variety of memorabilia for sale.

Anyone up for dinner at Oscar’s?

It has been a while since the San Diego Jaguar Club hosted an event at the San Diego Automotive Museum. Indoor and outdoor facilities are available for private parties. By far, the favorite place to host an evening dinner affair is on the main floor surrounded by the exhibits. Cost is nominal. I think it is time our Jaguar Club members returned for a formal visit to the San Diego Automotive Museum. What do you say?

JCNA New Car Discount ProgramWe are very happy to advise JCNA members that, effective immediately, Jaguar Retail Operations has announced the re-instatement of the JCNA New Car Discount program to all North American Jaguar dealers via Retail Opera-tions Bulletin No: JSOB13-25. The biggest difference between this new program and the previous Club discount program, is an increase in the discount from $750.00 to $1,000.00. We know this has taken a long time in coming, but it is finally here! See NOTE below for new information.

Program DescriptionJaguar Clubs of North America members receive a customer cash offer upon verification of current membership. A Customer PIN form will be given to the organization member by the selling dealer. It asks for basic information and the JCNA member will be required to produce a current JCNA membership card. This form must be completed and kept in the deal jacket for audit purposes. The full amount of the Customer Cash must be applied to the purchase or paid directly to the customer. Outcycled Dealer Service Loaners and Ex-VIP vehicles are eligible for this program. There are, however, certain vehicles that are ineligible - Special Edition and Limited Edition Production Models are not eligible (i.e. XKR-S, XKR-S Convertible, XJL Ultimate).

NOTE:A new discount program has recently been announced by Jaguar Land Rover. Discounts now total up to $2,500 and include the new F-Type Coupe. See an authorized Jaguar dealer for full details.
