Welcome New Members!by Nedra Rummell

On The Cover: Santa contemplates an even swap...his sleigh for Rex Ryan’s 1953 XK120

Madame PresidentNovember saw the club partici-pating in two events again for the month – the Golden State 400 and the November 10th social, which was a tour at Rex Ryan’s garage fol-lowed by lunch at the Gathering in Hillcrest. This year was the 9th annual running of the Golden State 400 on Nov. 3rd & 4th. Although it is an unofficial club event, many of our members turn out for the run. I personally did not get to go this year, but I heard that the hotel at Palm Springs was a nice one and the Shadow rented a Lotus for the weekend. Ap-parently, having sold his E type, he needed something exotic in which to scream around the state while on the “tour.” I understand a fun time was had by all that went driving. On Nov. 10th we took advantage of the opportunity to go view Rex Ryan’s collection of beauties at his garage. Wow what a lovely group of automobiles! Lunch at the Gathering (in Hillcrest) was quite tasty. Voting for the elections was accomplished at the end of the meal, just after dessert. Thank you Rex, Dick and Fran for all your efforts to organize the day.The club’s Christmas holiday party is scheduled for December 8th . We’re again going to the Kona Kai, as we put down a non-refundable deposit last year.Well, this is my last column as your President for 2007. I have had a great time in my two-year stint riding around with you, going to museums, concours, sailing, driving to out-of-the way restaurants for meals, and all. I’d like to thank everyone who helped make this year an active one for the club. We couldn’t have done it without you. So a driving we will go ….. Katherine

Last night, November 5th, we went to a fantastic showing of the new up and coming Jaguar XF at The Montage Spa

and Resort in Laguna Beach. This place is a real 5 Star Place. They greeted us and everyone by our names and showed us personally where to go. The food in five rooms was perfectly delicious with a great pianist playing and video newsmen tak-ing pictures. As you can see they video’d me in the new Jag. I enjoyed posing as usual! Just wanted to share this with you all. Rochelle & Hugh

Michael Cook, who heads up the JCNA Archives, is now able to provide vehicle build data on your Jaguar. This information includes model, body style, various VIN, engine etc numbers, original exterior and interior colors, date built, first owner and more.

I tried this new service as a test run and it worked slick as a whistle. Go to the JCNA web site at www.JCNA.com. At the top of the page click on “Library”. Now scroll down until you find “Jaguar Car Archival Services” on the right hand side. Un-der this heading, click on “Heritage Certificates”. This will take you to a page that provides you with info regarding the certificate. Ignore the $40 price tag. For JCNA members it’s only $25. This page also provides you a link to the request form. Click on the blue enclosed form for the application. If you are not computer savvy, contact me and I’ll mail you one.

A Tour of Rex Ryan’s Garageand Lunch at THE GATHERING

SDJC held a lunch at The Gathering in Mission Hills Saturday, November 10th. The lunch, hosted by Dick and Francine Kearney, began with a tour of Rex Ryan’s extensive and diverse automobile collection. Rex has beau-tifully maintained collectible cars ranging from a late model Lotus to a 30s MG. He was kind enough to pull all of them out of their individual plastic garage-like coverings and line them up in perfect rows.

The tour included interesting stories behind many of the cars.

San Diego Jaguar Club Dealership DisplayJaguar Kearny Mesa has requested we resume presenting our beautiful Jaguars in their showroom. What a compli-ment! They obviously attended our last Concours. The following are some guidelines we set up to make the experi-ence rewarding to both club member and dealership:

∙ The display is, of course, voluntary only. If you would like to display your Jag, notify me.∙ It is okay, if for some wild reason, your Jaguar leaks. A drip pan will be provided.

∙ Be prepared to leave your Jaguar at the showroom for a full month. Consider it free storage. ∙ Make sure your Jaguar is well detailed when it arrives. ∙ We are looking for older Jags, probably 80s and older in show condition, Champion or Driven.

∙ You will be asked to prepare a typing page sized placard for display with the car. I can help you with that.∙ Your Jaguar will be surrounded by stanchions. No one will be allowed to touch your vehicle. The showroom is always manned by Jaguar Kearny Mesa personnel.

This is a great opportunity to advertise our club while providing a service for a dealership which has been extremely supportive of us. If you’re interested, contact me at (619) 698-6868 or [email protected] . I will provide you with all the details.

Golden State 400Story by Mike Warburton

Due to recent wildfires, about 90 percent of the route was

redone less than a week before the event. What a scramble that was! Despite the last minute changes, we all had a great time. The weather was perfect as we gathered in Rancho San Diego

for the start of the drive. For lovers of all things motor-ing, the always eclectic mix of GS400 participants did not disappoint. From Rolls to Mazda, Lotus to Dodge – even a Jag or two – the variety of cars and people is what sets this event apart from the rest. After an im-promptu Tom Jones karaoke

session by yours truly, we were off “like a prom dress”.

If you haven’t heard, this event is for driv-ers. On our way north and east, we wound through Japatul Val-

ley, Pine Valley, and up the incredible Sun-rise Highway. These roads are great for stretching your legs, testing your mettle, or joyfully cruising with

the top down! We drove through Julian, then onto the twisty may-hem of Wynola Rd. This is the road where a short wheel base, stiff springs and white knuckles make all the difference! (Watch the video of Wynola Rd. in the gallery on the website. You can play “spot the jag club mem-

bers”.) We descended Ban-ner Grade and ate lunch at Carlee’s Place in Borrego Springs, where I think Stick bribed the waitress, as he ended up eating Eileen Lepis’ lunch instead of waiting for his own…

Golden State 400 continued

We climbed out of Borrego via S22 and S2, and sprinkled in a few more twisty roads while heading North on 79 and 371, eventually turning to the Pines to Palms Highway. This is was the scene of “Hemi vs. CHP” and,

needless to say, the CHP won.

Mark in the Chrys-ler 300 was nabbed by the man! I real-ized later that since my first GS400 in 2002, I am not aware of anyone getting a ticket – pretty remark-able considering a few of us handily double speed limits

all day long! After a dramatic afternoon drop into the warm, glowing desert, we headed to the hotel in Palm Springs. The rest of the day was a loud and obnoxious blur, thanks to the several hours spent whooping it up at Grant and Nedra’s Mercedes “trunk bar” in the parking lot.

Sunday, several folks spent the day in Palm Springs playing golf, shopping, or sleeping off a hangover; still more GS400 folks fol-lowed the suggested route back, which took us down the famed De Luz Road and to

the coast for lunch at Kai’s in Cardiff, overlook-ing the Pacific.

What a way to kill a weekend! All said and done, we had 18 cars run the route to the desert. Certainly not our largest turnout,

Bare Metal Repaint For My 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas

Tech-Tips: From Bonnet To BootBy Paul M. Novak

As detailed in earlier issues of Jaguar Tracks, I took

my 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas to an auto body shop (see the ad for “A Perfect Fix” elsewhere in this issue of Jaguar Tracks) for a bare metal repaint to correct some serious rust in both windshield channels and to repair a bad case of “checking” that destroyed the condition of the paint on my car. Over the years the beauty of the car diminished and had started to reduce my driving enjoyment. This car was a “keeper” so it was time for a major restoration. My goal was to have the car look as good as it did when came off the production line in Coventry, England in February 1984 (23

years ago). Since this time last year I have spent hun-dreds of hours preparing the car for a repaint and put-ting it back together again. My 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas has regained its beautiful metallic “Antelope” color and I have completed most of its restoration. The work was completed just in time for me to compete in three Jaguar Clubs of North America (JCNA) Concours d’Elegance events and it is my pleasure to report the re-sults of those competitions:

1. San Diego Jaguar Club, First Place Driven, Class D-6, Score 9.9772. Jaguar Owners Club of Los Angeles, Third Place Driven, Class D-6, Score 9.9863. Inland Empire Jaguar

Club, First Place Driven, Class D-6, Score 9.965

Included in this ar-ticle are pictures of the trophies I won, and my 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas at each of the concours events.

With my entry into three JCNA concours events and my overall

score of 9.976 my car is now listed in the number

Two First Place and One Third Place Trophies

At the 5 Aug 07 SDJC Concours

At the 6 Oct IEJC Concours

At the 9 Sep 07 JOC Concours

5 position for Driven Division Class D-6 for North America. I feel a great deal of satisfaction looking at the car and seeing how far it’s come since last year this time when I started planning for the repaint. While I didn’t achieve my original goal of com-peting this year in the Champion Division, I plan to continue my restoration work and over the next several months prepare the car for Champion Division competition in 2008. For those unfamiliar with the concours Champion and Driven Division judging, the big differences are that the Champion Division cars have their engine bay and trunk (boot) judged in addition to the rest of the car. This means that the engine, trunk, spare tire, tools and even owners manuals need to be in top shape.

This was my first year of seri-ous concours participation as an entrant. I have been a con-cours judge for five years now and I have learned a lot. I have found that participation in the concours events has made me more knowledgeable about my Jaguars and that has helped me to improve the general condition and appearance of my Jaguars. I have also had a lot of fun com-peting and have met some very nice and helpful people. I highly recommend concours participa-tion to those who are considering it. _________________________

Jaguar XK-EngineValve Clearance Workshop

(Party)

Over the past year several San Diego Jaguar Club members have asked me about how to adjust the intake and exhaust valves in their Jaguar XK en-gines. This is a necessary and time consuming task that needs to be done to your XK engine to keep it working its best. The in-line six cylinder XK engines were installed in most of the post World War II Jaguars up through the XJ6 model year 1987. Over the past 5 years I have successfully adjusted the valves in my 1957 MK VIII, my 1969 E-Type and my 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas. The engines are very similar, the valve adjust-ing procedure is nearly identical and I have been successful in performing this task several times now. I decided to do a workshop (party?) at my house starting at 1 PM on Saturday 12 January 2008 where inter-ested Jaguar owners can learn how to conduct this procedure. I have a few spare cylinder heads, the necessary tools, and a complete set of adjusting shims already on hand. I plan to provide handouts on how to do this task, demonstrate it using one of my spare cylinder heads and then allow others to try their hand at adjusting the valves on some of my spare cylinder heads. For those of you who are interested in the

more technical aspects of Jaguar ownership, you should enjoy the experience. For those who have already done this before, please consider attending and sharing your insights and experience. For those of you who have no interest, but just want to watch the fun, please come. More in-formation on page 4 of this issue of Jaguar Tracks. If you would like to attend, please send me an RSVP email so that I’ll know how many people to expect. My email address is: [email protected] and my home address is: 25425 Rancho Bar-ona Road, Ramona, CA 92065. Please send me an email if you have questions about this work-shop (party). _________________________

Intake and Exhaust

Here are some questions Jaguar owners have recently

asked and answers I provided based on my experience and research. If you are handy and interested in working on your Jaguar, there are a lot of things that you can do to increase your knowledge and enjoyment of these cars while reducing your cost of ownership. Purchase some shop manuals and tools, and start today. If you feel that some or all of the work on your Jaguar is better left to the profession-als, you should still learn more about how your car works so that you will be better able to under-stand problems as they occur and evaluate the recommendations of your professional service and repair shop. Some questions and answers in this column were taken from my emails exchanges with fellow members of www.Jag-Lovers.org and discussions with members of the San Diego Jaguar Club.

Q1: One of the electrical engine cooling fans on my E-Type died so I purchased a used replace-ment. I installed it today & it works, but am confused by the way the air is circulating. When looking under the bonnet towards the front of the car, the right fan is turning clockwise & is blowing air rearward towards the engine. The left motor is turning counter-clockwise & is blowing air for-wards towards the radiator. Is this correct? I tried reversing the leads

on the left fan, but it made no change on the direction of the air flow. Any assistance would help as I am thinking this may over-heat. I would have thought both fans should pull air thru the radia-tor. Owner 1968 E-Type 2+2.

A1: I had this same problem a couple of years ago in my 1969 E-Type FHC. You are correct that both fans should pull air through the radiator and blow it rearward towards the engine. It seems that there are some nearly identical looking Jaguar E-Type fan motors that rotate in opposite directions. You must have purchased one of the earlier fan motors. Swapping the leads won’t help. You’ll have to remove the motor from it’s housing and rewire it internally. In the meantime I recommend that you disconnect the fan for now as it is blowing the air forward and making things worse than not having a fan at all.

Q2: I think I have a dead fuel pump. I hear no pump noise because I’m not sure where the pump is (although I’m told I should be able to hear it). Owner 1984 XJ6

A2: The fuel pump in your car is located in the spare tire well in the trunk (boot). Open the trunk, remove the carpet, remove the wooden panel covering the spare tire well, and you will see the fuel pump in the right rear corner of the spare tire well. Put the trans-mission shifter in the Drive posi-tion and turn the ignition to the

start position while putting your foot on the brake (just in case). The engine shouldn’t start, but the fuel pump should run while you are holding the key in the start position. With the trunk open you should be able to hear the pump running. If not, have someone turn the ignition key while you stand back by the pump. There are lots of things that can cause the fuel pump not to operate when it’s supposed to, but this test should help you determine if the pump is running when it’s supposed to.

Q3: Shortly after I left home for work last month, the engine sput-tered a few times, then just quit. I couldn’t get it started again. I walked back home to get my wife’s help, but when I got home, I discovered her with my best friend. I was furious. Now I feel betrayed by both of them. I don’t associate with my best friend any-more and I feel that I can never again trust my wife. I’m at wits end. I’ve even thought of suicide. What should I do?

A3: Usually when a engine sput-ters before it conks out, it’s a fuel problem. Check the fuel pump first. If it’s not the pump check the fuel filter and finally check for debris in the fuel line.

JCNA SOUTHWESTREGIONAL DIRECTOR

ELECTIONSJust a friendly reminder that the Sep-tember-October issue of Jaguar Journal (with the new XF on the cover) holds the centerfold voting ballot for select-ing a new JCNA Southwest Region Di-rector. San Diego Jaguar Club member, Tom Krefetz, is one of the two candi-dates for the SW position.

As the owner of Classic Showcase, Tom, has been a major supporter of our club, JCNA and the Jaguar hobby. Our support for him would certainly be in the best interest of our own club, JCNA and the Jaguar marque. The voting response for these annual JCNA elections is surprisingly low and the winning margins, in the opposed contests, are frequently less than a dozen or so votes; your vote can make a difference. Many ballots are rejected when the voter votes for more than one candidate or for a candidate in other than their assigned region. Please find that issue of Jaguar Journal, before it gets totally misplaced with the Christmas catalogs, mark your ballot carefully and mail it off.

Vote for Tom

Well, that’s what I came up with. It doesn’t cover all the good times we had this year. I didn’t have photos of some of the events like: our Art Tour and luncheon at the San Diego Museum of Art, or that Club sponsored mosh pit at the Yanni concert, and I did not cover the two events already covered in this issue. Plus we still have one more big event this year, The Holiday Party. But it’s a pretty good representation of how active our club is and how much fun we have together. Here’s looking forward to another year of the same!

The winners will be announced at the November Board meeting and published in the December issue of the Jaguar Tracks. 4. 2007 Christmas Party: Nedra updated the Board with event logistics. She sought referral from the Board on a good photographer for portraits, and a Santa. For the latter, she will consult with Roger McDonald whose neighbor played Santa the other year. Placards will be placed on each table listing everyone’s cars at that table. There will be a group photo for the most represented car. An invitation to the JOC and the Inland Empire clubs was also mailed out. Local advertisers will also be invited to attend, at their cost. Vouchers for parking will be arranged for. Katherine will order service award trophies. D. New Business 1. Tuchscher Award: As indicated in previous meeting, the winner of this award will be announced at the December Holiday Party. Roger Townsend is leading this initiative. 2. 2007 Most Valuable Member: The Board evaluated candidates and voted on the recipient of this award. The winner will be announced at the December Holiday Party. 3. Explanation Day: Paul Novak suggested that a training session about or a trial run of the Concours be held next year to raise interest and encourage members to par-ticipate in this annual event. Initial plans are to hold it in April to prepare the members for participation as entrants the Concours in August. Paul will coordinate with Dick Cavicke.
