Presidents MessageRaising the Graduation Rate
Congratulations to the Joplin R-8 School District. As of this writing, it appears the district will have an over 80%
raduation rate for the first time in decades. When the final assessment is done and students who left tracked
own to see if they did, indeed, graduate, the numbers Joplin reports to the state may be even higher. This is a
reat achievement for the Joplin schools and a tribute to the hard work the district has made over the past several
ears to first establish a solid academic base, than pursue a creative track to keep students in school.
But the work is only beginning. Superintendent Dr. CJ Huff is the first to point out that the jump in graduation
ates for Joplin is getting the lower-hanging fruit. A chance in state law to raise the age for dropping out from
6 to 17 helped. The district also took advantage to a new law allowing students flex time, so those who need to
work can do so, while getting their classes in at non-traditional times. The district spent a lot of time last summer
nterviewing students who dropped out, those considering dropping out and those who dropped and then came
ack. From that input, a number of approaches were developed to reach those high school age students and get them reengaged in educat
But to get to maintain the progress and move to the next level, will take a concerted effort from the community and more specifically from
usiness. The district has set a goal of reaching an 87% graduation rate by 2014. This goal was set in conjunction with the Joplin Region
rosperity Initiative, the five-year economic and workforce development program lead by the Chamber, Joplin Business & Industrial
Development Corporation, Newman Innovation Center and other organizations. The JRPI is supporting efforts to move the regional
raduation rate to that 87% level. Some districts are already close, but as the largest district, Joplin must reach the goal for the region to rhe goal.
The Bright Futures initiative of the school district is already raising awareness of the drop-out issue and the need for broad community
upport. Over this summer, the Joplin school district and Chamber will be working on how business can best support keeping students in
chool. In the near future, there will be a series of focus groups. Business people, from various sectors such as manufacturing, health car
nd finance, will be asked to give their perceptions of the skill levels and work ethics of younger people ages 17-24. They will be asked
ow they think business can impact both the drop-out rate, but also how they can help this group gain the skills to be better employees an
onsequently be better paid so they can support themselves and their families in the future. If you are one of the people asked to be on a
ocus group; say yes.
rom the focus group discussions, we will
evelop a broader survey for all Chamber
members. This survey will help define morepecific approaches and needs and how
usinesses can get engaged in helping students
tay in school and learn the skills to help them
ind and keep the good jobs that are already
ere. When the survey comes out, we need
veryone to respond so we have a solid base of
ata from which to draw.
art of the process, as well, is to determine how
ou, as business leaders, help convey to your
eers, your employees and the broad community
hat education success is important. Graduating
rom high school is a marker of perseverance.
But it is important that students really learn the
kills they need to be successful in life.
Get engaged; first in giving feedback through
he focus groups and survey and then in being
part of the efforts to help these students be
uccessful. When they succeed; our whole
ommunity succeeds.

Q:
The good news is I got a job promotion. The bad news is I have to do my old job AND this new one. How can I
ossibly do that?
A:This is not uncommon today. Companies are lean and sometimes must include as many job functions as possible into one
osition. Their job is to turn a profit for shareholders.f there is no room for discussion with the person you report to, then take a whole different approach to your new job.
VIEW IT IN A POSITIVE WAY AND YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL!1. Whos to say that the jobs that must be done under your new title cant be done by one person?
2. You have been practicing to be a Peak Performer, right? So nows the time to show your stuff.
3. Combine the mission of the two jobs and know clearly what you are expected to do.
4. Take the two job descriptions and label everything A, B or C. A represents all of the Must Do tasks. B represents the Should Do tand C represents to Could Do tasks.
5. Now number them in the true order they should be done. Pick the most important A items and then start numbering the rest of the As. Nto the B items and lastly, the C items. You should now have the items numbered from 1 to however many tasks you originally had.
6. Now look at all the duties again and start with the A and B items. As you get to the end of the B items and look at the C items, askyourself if these are really essential duties.
7. If there are some that are, is there someone else who could do some of these things?
Stay tuned next month and we will give you some final tips!
