Thank you for renewing your investment with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce!

The Empire District Electric Company celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. In 1909, the Henry L Doherty Company established Empire and selected the name from their home state of New York.

Empire’s role was to power the expanding lead and zinc mines of the region. Electricity was coming of age and the area mines were Empire’s most prolific customers. Electrical power was utilized below ground in the mines and above ground in the concentration mills. Transportation was also adopting this new form of power. The interurban trolley system which provided local residents the ability to commute back and forth from community to community was also powered by electricity.

The one hundred year story of the Empire District Electric Company is closely interwoven with the history of the region. As the area grew, so did Empire.

From the beginning, the corporate management team made a concerted effort to run their business from Joplin, Missouri. During

the month of August, 1927 Empire officials constructed a new corporate headquarters in Joplin at the southwest corner of Sixth Street and Joplin Avenue. In 1985 the corporate office building received a major makeover at the same location.

Culminating a century of service, today Empire is one of the area’s largest employers with 733 employees. The company provides service to 167,645 customers in 121 incorporated communities in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. In addition Empire provides natural gas to 44,703 customers and water to 4,500 customers in Missouri.

Over the last 62 years Empire has played a major role in supporting the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce by filling key leadership positions and assisting with thousands of volunteers. The Empire District Electric Company has also been instrumental in the sphere of economic development. Through their guidance and endorsements a multitude of new businesses and jobs have been created for the region. Empire became a member in 1947.

TLT Government & Law DayTLT Class Spends Day at the Joplin Police Department

February 10th found this year’s Tomorrow’s Leaders Today class at the Joplin Police Department for a session covering local government and law enforcement with various speakers from Joplin’s city government and the police department. Jason Higdon, representing the session sponsor Spencer, Scott & Dwyer, P.C., explained to the students his responsibilities and background as an attorney. City Manager, Mark Rohr, then told the class about the economic and community vision for the Joplin area. Police officers, Gabe Allen and his K-9 partner, Gunner, were among the highlights of the day. The students learned about investigations, community policing, SWAT organizations and given great insights into the problem of meth production and use in our area. A wonderful lunch was provided by the Joplin Police Department! The day was rounded out by a tour of the City Jail. The class came away with new perspectives on the various careers, opportunities and challenges faced by these individuals on a day-to-day basis. Many thanks to all the individuals from the Joplin Police Department and Lt. Brian Lewis for their time and expertise.

What’s the difference between “persistent” and “annoying” in sales and how do you overcome it?A: This is a great question that many salespeople have in the back of their mind. Every few years you will see a new sales approach that claims to be your ticket to sales success. It’s great to read about these new techniques, since one may be the “gem” you’ve been looking for. But if you study the sales process, the most effective method to get to know a potential client uses common sense:

Get to know the decision maker and be there for them when they are ready to buy.1.

Don’t “sell” the person. People want to make their own decisions—and if your products or 2. services are a real benefit to them—they’ll buy from you.

Keeping good 3. CONTACT with them is the most important way to show them you care and that you will be there when they need you.

Be Persistent, but Not AnnoyingNumber three (above) is the key. It requires persistence, but should never be done in an annoying way. How do you know when you’re annoying? The person’s body signals, or what they say, are clues. But before you get to that point, think about your number of CONTACTS you can make with that person. Whether the person is a prospective client or one who has been with you for years, think about the many ways you can be helpful to them. Give them:

--Articles you find that deal with their business. Drop them off or send them, just in case they didn’t see them. --Useful information about your own company or its products and services that’s pertinent to that particular client. But don’t just send it.

Deliver it personally—and use a highlighter to indicate what you think is most important to them. This will save them time and drive home your point.--A phone call to see if they have any more questions for you

Think like your client or potential client. How often would you have wanted to receive a CONTACT? Regularly, but not too often, right? Give them time to digest what you’ve given them. With some businesses, that might mean once every two weeks. With your line of work, it could be more or less frequent. By using regular CONTACTS as a strategy, chances are when they are ready to buy, they’ll call you. Idea: Make a list of all the ways you could CONTACT the clients you are trying to reach. Have one list for present clients and one for potential clients. Then all you have to do is make sure you have completed each type of CONTACT for each person.
