Welcome Note

Whoever works in the area of waste management knows that, waste and wastewater can both be a helping tool, as well as a possible threat. It can be utilized, as an alternative energy and/or water resource and help save millions of cubic meters of fresh water and significant amounts of energy, or it can contaminate water reservoirs and soil, if disposed improperly, threatening the lives of millions. In a world, that both energy and water demand is increasing, the importance of that simple statement is significant. Especially for arid and semiarid areas of the globe, exactly like those surrounding the Mediterranean region.

Aim of the IWA Regional conference on Waste and Wastewater Management, Science and Technology (WWMST2013), is to gather, under one roof, the largest possible number of people that their research, business and daily activity, is related to the management of waste and wastewater, irrelevant where that takes place and for what purpose. We believe that through the presentation and discussion of technical and scientific achievements, as well as the exchange of experiences that each of you brought along, will help towards the sustainable management of waste and wastewater, by highlighting valuable practices and policies such as water reuse and energy recovery from waste, and reducing the threats and dangers related to waste and wastewater.

Part of this effort is the inclusion in the WWMST2013 of the 2nd INTERWASTE Workshop on the demonstration of innovative solutions for waste and wastewater treatment that is supported by the Life+ Program INTERWASTE. Aim of the workshop is the presentation of all the various technical issues related with the treatment of organic waste and wastewater in a combined scheme, as the one demonstrated in Cyprus by the INTERWASTE project. The support of the program team in the realization of this workshop was important in all aspects.

The editors would like to express their gratitude to all authors for their kind effective cooperation which made possible to publish these proceedings in due time. Particular thanks go to the Board of Directors of the International Water Association for their cooperation in organizing this conference.

We would also like to thank and acknowledge the support of the European financial instrument for the Environment (LIFE+), for the financial support towards the conference organization, through the realization of the INTERWASTE and PURE projects. Moreover, we acknowledge the financial support of the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, through the MEMBRANES project.

We do hope you will find all information that follows useful.

Conference structure

The main Conference will last three days, from 26th to 28th of June 2013, and will take place at the Grand Resort Hotel in Limassol. The 2nd INTERWASTE workshop will take place the on the 28th of June.

Part of the Conference is structured into parallel oral sessions. Presentations will last 20 minutes strictly, including the time for two or three questions (approximately 5 minutes). All will be presented in a strict time schedule, in order to allow participants to move between the sessions. The Chair-persons have the responsibility to ensure the presentations time schedule is full followed.

Coffee, Lunch & Conference Dinner

Coffee, tea, juices and lunches are included in the conference fees, which will be served at the Grand Resort Hotel restaurant. Coffee / tea will be continuously available through a self-service coffee station.

The Conference Dinner – Gala that will take place at the Grand Resort Hotel is not included in the registration fees. Those who have not registered for the Gala Dinner and would like to attend can purchase coupons at the price of €60 at the registration desk.

Poster presentations and Exhibitions

A continuous poster presentation will take place in the Grand Resort Hotel main venue hall. Exhibitors extend the program with valuable information in the conference documents and with stands in the exhibition area at the hall of the Grand Resort Hotel.

Tours

A short Tour will take place and is included in the conference fees.

Friday 28th of June at 14:30 departing from the Grand Resort Hotel: Visit to the old Town of Limassol

Limassol is the second largest town in Cyprus after Nicosia, with population of approximately 200,000. Apart from being a major tourist destination, it is also a principal hub for international business in Cyprus. This gives Limassol a more cosmopolitan feel compared to other district centers. Recent renovation projects in the old town and old port area are seeking to rejuvenate the historic center, making it more accessible and interesting for sightseeing

For better organization of the Tour you are kindly asked to inform your intention to participate to the event to the conference secretariat upon registration.

WWMST2013 INSTRUCTIONS FOR ORAL & POSTER PRESENTATION ORAL PRESENTATION

Platform Schedule The platform sessions will be conducted from Thursday (June 27th) through Friday (June 28th) afternoon. The attached program states the session to which your paper has been assigned and the day the session is scheduled. The specific time assigned to your presentation is also indicated. Speaker/Chair Meetings Speakers are requested to meet their session Chair before the beginning of the session. The meeting will be attended by the session chairs and the speakers involved in the session, during the break before the session, at each session’s room. Planning your Oral Presentation Papers will be scheduled at 20 - minute intervals, and the session chairs will enforce the time limit for each paper. Plan to speak for about 15 minutes, leaving 4 minutes for questions and 1 minute for transition to the next speaker. No extension of the time set for presentation can be accepted. In fact, as there will be two parallel sessions, participants should have the possibilities to go between parallel sessions. Preparation of Visuals A common complaint about platform presentations is that speakers use visuals that cannot be read by the audience because of poor graphic design and/or too much information appearing on each image. The session rooms are large, and many of the people in your audience will be sitting a considerable distance from the projection screen. PowerPoint Each platform session room will be equipped with a Video projector, a computer (running MS/Windows), and necessary peripherals to support PowerPoint. Staff will be present to run the projection if necessary. Please bring your presentation to the specific room you will be presenting, the day prior to your presentation, or during the lunch / coffee break. Please check before the session starts that your presentation work. (Note: NO modems or Internet connections will be provided in the sessions rooms.)

POSTER PRESENTATION You are asked to bring your poster with you to the conference. Dimensions (approximately): 60cm wide by 80 cm long. Supplies for the display of poster (staples and glue stick) will be provided at the conference upon arrival. Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to let us know at: Tel. +357 7000 3032.

FLASH PRESENTATIONS (for Posters)

During the scientific program two parallel “Flash Presentation Sessions” will be organized. A “flash presentation” offers with a maximum of 3 transparencies and 5 minutes a way to highlight a poster. Its purpose is not to summarize at high speed the content but rather to attract the attention to the poster and stimulate questions and discussions during the poster session following the flash session. The Organizing Committee encourages combining a poster with a “flash”. Each poster session will be devoted in priority to the discussion of the corresponding “flash presentations.
