Everyone knows everyone and everyone helps everyone. So when the city graded the area in front of the primary school intending the area for a park, the families in Volcanes waited patiently for any government department to build the park. After one year with no results, they took matters into their own hands. Under the direction of the President of the Volcanes Colonia Council, the families took action. They installed two soccer goal posts for a simple soccer field, and began a play area for the smaller children. Within weeks and with the help of the local citizens (no help from the government) a beautiful playground was built with sidewalks, a fountain, benches, a swing set and climbing structures. The kids love it. Every afternoon they play in the area waiting for the teachers to arrive for the afternoon English and computer classes. Once they see the van turn the corner they run to the gate of the school and line up waiting to rush to class. This community effort is what is helping to make our program so successful.

.Colonia Volcanes is a small, tightly knit community. Everyone knows everyone and everyone helps everyone. So when the city graded the area in front of the primary school intending the area for a park, the families in Volcanes waited patiently for any government department to build the park. This amazing 12 year old is currently in Grade 6, in his final year at

the Volcanes public school and he is eager to move on to the 105

Public Highschool next year. When talking with this extremely well

mannered student you can see his amazing potential for a bright

future. He is a pleasure to have in class as he is always excited to get

involved and participate. He enjoys coming to the English program at

Volcanes and is there Monday to Friday for English and also attends

on Saturdays for computer class. Daniel enjoys school, his favourite

classes are Math and Spanish because he says those are the ones that

come easy to him. Daniel enjoys soccer, playing with friends but

most of all riding around on his bicycle you can usually see him

around the neighborhood running errands for his mom. Daniel

dreams of one day getting into the field of architecture and being an

architect. Good for you Daniel – Skyscrapers the limit!!!

Sheryl Dutt - English Teacher

Jesus Ivan is nine years old. He comes to English class con-sistently and is always enthusiastic. When I asked him why he likes coming to class he told me English was his favorite subject because he likes to communicate with people. I was not surprised by his answer. Always smiling and or making

a joke, jesus not only focuses on his own work but helps others in his class and the grade below. He has many friends and can light up a room. Jesus aspires to be a policeman, and although I see him as more of a professional comedian I think a job as a policeman would be very fitting for such a noble young man. For now, Jesus likes to spend his time riding his bicycle or helping his mom around the house. It is a pleasure to have him in class.

Our major operating expense in the Volcanes Project is funding the teachers. We offer a small stipend to each teacher of $3,000 pesos per month to teach at one of our sessions. In order to ensure that we have the funds available to continue with the program and to continue to have the best teachers available, we need help to pay for the teachers. We are asking individuals or groups to sponsor a teacher, $3,000 pesos per month for 10 months.
