What is the Motability Scheme?The Motability Scheme provides a simple way toenjoy a new car, scooter or powered wheelchairwithout the worry of owning and running one.

Today, over half a million disabled people and their families benefit from the freedom and independence provided through worry-free mobility from the Motability Scheme.

Since it began in 1978, the Motability Scheme has helped millions of disabled people and their families gain independence and freedom. Brand new cars, wheelchair accessible vehicles, scooters and powered wheelchairs are available to disabled people through the Motability Scheme.

Who can join the Motability Scheme?If you receive either:

The Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance

or

War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplementand have at least 12 months’ award remaining, you can apply to join the Motability Scheme.

Before taking to the road...

With Motability, all or part of your mobility allowance is transferred to us for the agreement period. Some cars are offered at no morethan the cost of the allowance while other, more expensive vehiclesrequire an additional payment, known as an ‘advance payment’, tocover the cost.

Car AdaptationsAdaptations are available through Motability to make driving as comfortable and safe as possible.

Driving adaptations are available to help with:

Vehicle Access – to help get in and out of a car as easy as possible, with swivel chairs, extended door opening angle, rise and fall transferseats, person hoists and key fob extensions.

Equipment Loading – to help load and store equipment without needing to manually lift. Electronic hoists are available to store wheelchairs and scooters in the boot of the car. Manual folding wheelchairs can also be stored on top of the car with electronic rooftop wheelchair stowage systems.

Driving – including steering, braking and acceleration; for example steering balls, push/pull hand controls and electronic as well as left foot accelerators, easy-release handbrakes and infrared controls.

“ Wheelchair accessible vehiclesWheelchair accessible vehicles (known as WAVs) including drive from wheelchair solutions are alsoavailable through Motability, enabling the personwith disabilities to travel as a passenger or driverwithout transferring from their wheelchair.

Drive from wheelchair solutions enable disabled people to travel without transferring to a seat and usually come with an extendedlease of five years.

Wheelchair accessible vehicles are also available for people who want to travel as a passenger whilst seated in their wheelchair.

� Can transfer from a sitting to standing position independently

� Can drive the scooter without needing any help

� Have sufficient shoulder and arm strength and movement to operate a handle-bar style control

� Possess sufficient vision, perception and hearing to operate the scooter safely

Powered WheelchairsA powered wheelchair may be best if you…

� Need to be assisted getting in and out of seats

� Cannot safely use a handle-bar style control unit

� Need dual controls (where someone else helps to control the powered wheelchair)

� Need any form of leg rest/support or joystick controls to travel

Help us to help more!Motability raises funds to help with payments towards car adaptations and heavily adapted vehicles for disabled people who cannot otherwise afford what they need.

Motability also administers the Specialised Vehicles Fund on behalf of the Government, for people requiring vehicles with complex adaptations, wheelchair accessible vehicles for passengers anddrive from wheelchair solutions.
