To that end we are launching two new sections on our portal which will be available to girls and parents: an Examinations section with all the information girls need for external exams and a Study Skills section with lots of helpful advice about planning revision and sensible approaches to preparing for exams. Our assembly finished with a farewell to our current Head Girls and a beautiful recital by Yassi Vaziri of her own composition, ‘Saying Goodbye’ which she’ll perform in the regional finals of the Teenstar competition at the Hove Centre on Saturday. During the October half term we went to Seville to meet our Spanish exchanges, then they came to Brighton mid March. It was a really valuable experience where we learnr as well as enjoyed ourselves. It was very interesting to find out about our exchange’s cultures and traditions and vice versa. We know we have made friendships that will last.

First ever Spanish Exchange with IES Nervión, SevilleEleven Spanish students, including two boys, returned to Seville at the crack of dawn on Thursday after an action packed week in Brighton. They may have been a little bemused, but most certainly entertained, after attending 9P’s Comic Relief Assembly on their first morning at school. They were then treated to a tour of the school by Head Girl, Helen, where the boys had to be told repeatedly that, no, the HE Room, was not a science laboratory but a kitchen. As Ms Rengel, our Spanish Assistant explained, in Spain ‘Mama’ and ‘Abuela’ teach you how to cook! The rest of the day was spent attending a variety of lessons ranging from PE, where the Spanish girls were able to relax on the sofa, to English, where one of the teachers made it quite clear that she did not share her admiration of Rafael Nadal with the visiting Spanish girl, but preferred the sporting prowess of Switerland’s Roger Federer! When asked in a Year 10 Spanish lesson whether they preferred their own school in Seville to ours, BHHS won the vote, with the range of extracurricular activities on offer cited as the reason. The participating girls entertained their Spanish counterparts over the weekend with bowling at the Marina, a visit to Brighton Museum and a Sunday stroll around Devil’s Dyke as part of a Duke of Edinburgh training exercise (say no more). Photos of Sunday lunch were circulated that afternoon and many even admitted that ‘English food isn’t actually that bad!’ In the evening some attended a concert at the Corn Exchange where our very own Emily Jacobs entertained the assembled audience on guitar. The Spanish students spent Monday and Tuesday taking in the sights of London and Portsmouth, followed by yet another evening of entertainment at the fashion show. After a morning of lessons on Wednesday, the whole group set off on a walking tour of Brighton, led by Mr Sherwood, who provided us all with an introduction to Brighton’s history. The week finished with a tea party where flapjack and Twiglets were sampled for the first time by the Nervión students and teachers. Although the very first Spanish Exchange is now over, I very much hope that links will be maintained and the girls will continue to benefit from such an enjoyable and enriching experience.

Mrs J. O’MahonyThe Spanish exchanges had a great time when they came from Seville to stay with us last week. The highlights included a historical tour of Brighton (led by Mr Sherwood), trips to London and Portsmouth, bowling at the Marina, and a three hour walk on the South Downs. Although the weather wasn’t what they hoped for, they thoroughly enjoyed themselves throughout the week. The exchange gave us all a great opportunity to practise our Spanish and for the exchanges to show off their fantasti c English. We already miss them a lot, but are keeping closely in touch with them, and hope to see them all in the near future!

New Officers Team Congratulations to the following Lower Sixth Form students who have been appointed Officers. They will take up their roles at the beginning of the summer term, as the Upper Sixth Officer team steps down to give their full attention to the exam period ahead.

Hello! This is Joyce and I’m your new Head Girl. This year’s Head Girl team consists of Mollie Bower, Clara Austera and Kate Button as our Deputies,

and Jasmin Southgate as our second Head Girl. We’re a group of very diverse girls, you may have seen one of our faces pop up and around in different school events such as, previous sport teams, choirs, Momentum or even from the Junior School! We get heavily involved with school life and it allows us to interact with everyone, including staff and parents, and I’m certain it’s something we all enjoy. I’d like to thank every student and member of staff who has voted to form this team and to give me this chance of being Head Girl. The hustings consisted of many candidates, who were all worthy of your vote, and therefore I am so utterly grateful in being given this chance to represent the High School and all the High School Girls- Happy is definitely an understatement for how I’m feeling. On my first day at the Senior School, I remember seeing this girl who stood up in front of Assembly and read out the notices - oblivious to who she was, I immediately inspired to be her. Turns out, she was the Head Girl. I’ve been at the High School since I was 3 years old, and starting Nursery felt as if I was going into a whole new universe. I’ve literally spent the majority of my life at this school and I guess it’s always been a dream of mine to be Head Girl, and now that it’s happened I haven’t been able to stop jumping from excitement!! Don’t worry though I can be normal, sometimes. I’m certain that my team and I have grown to love this school throughout all the years we’ve been here and quite frankly, we want you to feel at home as much as we do. Thank you!
