The small, friendly school that gets results for individuals.

18th March 2016

Dear Pupils, Parents and Staff,

The second term of this highly successful academic year 2015-16 reaches its conclusion. We

have all had an exceptionally busy, active and positive term. Pupil reports are nearing

completion and our aim is to post them during the course of next week.

At the start of this week a small group of very privileged pupils Gus Altuccini, Ed Briars,

Holly Simpson all from Y12 and Jack Bercovici, Gabrielle Hunter-Short, Isobel Tod from Y11

and Mr Stephen Spencer, Head of Sixth Form, Mrs Linda Pearson, Head of Careers, and I

travelled to Westminster Abbey, London to celebrate Commonwealth Day in the presence of

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. The event was a wonderful observation of the fifty-three

member-nation community and their aspirations for global respect, tolerance and

multiculturalism, and also paid tribute to the Queen’s 90th birthday. With the likes of Prince

Harry, David Cameron, Kofi Annan, John Major and Ellie Goulding, we were part of a very

distinguished audience.

This week has seen celebrations of our pupils’ academic efforts and endeavours:

Preparatory School’s Project Sharing Assembly with many children presenting their

work to parents and to their peers. Many thanks to all the Prep School teachers,

particularly Mrs Nicky Peace, Head of Prep School, for helping the children to

achieve a very good standard of work and achievement.

Extended Project Qualifications presentations by Pippa Buckley, Jack Bercovici,

Daniel Connolly and Jacob Wright to their peers and to staff. Many thanks to Mr

Steve Braden for coordinating this activity and for supporting the pupils with their

presentations.

Year 6 Science Fair presentations to pupils and staff in the Preparatory School. Thank

you to Mrs Caroline Salt, Science Teacher, for coordinating this event.

Pre-Prep held their Easter Bonnet competition with all children making wonderful

creations to challenge Mrs Heather Pringle, Head of DT, as the ultimate judge of the

event.

The Junior Quiz with contestants from Y8 was held on Wednesday 16th March; the

pupils got to the playoff round against Thomas Gainsborough School. Thank you to

Mr Ward for his organisation of the event.

Yesterday the U14 Netball team played in the Area Netball League final and won 13 – 7

which qualifies them to play in the County Finals on the 16th April. Well done.

I was delighted to see our German Exchange return to TGS safely and happily. The pupils

and staff, from their many positive comments and many German goodies, thoroughly

enjoyed their experience to Gymnasium Brede in Brakel, northern Germany. Please do see

our school website http://www.thetgram.norfolk.sch.uk/ for more information.

I shall also wish the Ski Trip a very happy, active and safe trip to Italy from Saturday 19th

until Sunday 27th March. There are 42 pupils travelling with 6 teachers accompanying, led by

the Ski Trip Leader, Mrs Alison Alecock, Head of Girls’ PE, and Mrs Heather Pringle, Head

of KS3, Miss Amanda Sherring, Head of KS4, Mr Mark Glassbrook, Head of Geography, Mr

Stuart Simpson, Head of Boy’s PE and Mr Michael Hill, PE teacher.

Pupils and students are now afforded a three-week break, in the majority of cases this will

comprise a well-deserved holiday and rest. For our older pupils and students in Years 11, 12

and 13, who will be taking public examinations in a few short weeks, please be reminded

that an organised revision plan will certainly assist them to prepare more correctly and

effectively. I do hope that time away from studying and disruptions to revision will be kept

to a reasonable minimum. Good luck.

As I write this, we are just about to start our whole school assembly from Pre-Prep to Sixth

Form in Williamson Hall to mark the end of term. Many Endeavours Certificates, Sporting

Colours and Commendations will be delivered to many deserving pupils and students.

Later on we shall enjoy the spectacle of the House Music Competition with our traditional

Easter Service taking place at St Cuthbert’s Church in Thetford.

On behalf of all members of staff here at Thetford Grammar School, I do wish you a very

Happy Easter holiday with lots of chocolate eggs, friends, family and memorable moments

for all.

I shall look forward to seeing you back at school for the start of Term 3 on Tuesday 12th

April.

PRE-PREP PUPILS PLANTING UPDATE

On Monday morning, Pre-Prep pupils were super excited to see that

their sunflowers and beanstalks have had a rather large growth spurt

over the weekend! To further their learning pupils have been finger

painting flower pictures and labelling different parts of a plant. Some

excellent work was produced by pupils who were very proud of their

achievements.

PREP SCHOOL HOUSE ACTIVITIES MORNING

All pupils in Prep School took part in a very exciting

House Activity morning on Tuesday. Every pupil made

an Easter tree, Easter nests in a basket, an Easter card

and a wooden egg decoration.

The children all worked well in their House teams,

further developing their super relationships. A big

thank you to all of the staff for all of their hard work

and also to Mrs Worsley for coming in to make Easter

trees with the pupils!

PRE- PREP EASTER BONNET COMPETITION

The annual Easter Bonnet competition took place on Thursday with the

prizes kindly donated by Carolyn Cordner and her catering team. All of the

pupils who took part had clearly enjoyed creating their Easter bonnets. Mrs

Pringle, Head of Design Technology was invited to judge the competition

and she found these decisions very difficult indeed!

Congratulations to Sophie Codd who was awarded 1st

place in the Pre-Prep – Y2 category and Jiya Changela who

was awarded 1st place in the Y4-6 category. 2nd place was awarded to

Connie Foreman and Sophie Peace respectively, with 3rd place being

awarded to Amelia Worsley and Arlo Greenwood. Runner up prizes were

awarded to Max Hanspal, Holly, George Bullen, Ethan Harris and Oscar

PREP SCHOOL PROJECT SHARING ASSEMBLY

All pupils from Pre-Prep to

Year 6 have been working

hard over the past five

weeks completing projects

on a range of topics. To

celebrate the pupil’s

achievements, parents were

invited to attend a special assembly on Wednesday where they

were able to see all of the completed projects.

THE MAYOR’S ASSEMBLY

On Thursday 10th March Cllr Robert Kybird, Thetford Town Mayor, came into school to give

an assembly about his role in office and his civic

responsibilities. The pupils then had the chance to ask

some probing and interesting questions. This is what

some of our Y7s thought of the event:

‘I enjoyed the Mayor’s visit because he answered all of

the questions put forward. I also enjoyed learning

about the sword that the sword bearer carries. He also

told us about some plans he had for Thetford’

Oskar Y7

‘On Thursday 10th March Y4-9 enjoyed an inspiring

visit by the Mayor of Thetford. He answered many

questions and showed the pupils the Sword of

Thetford. After telling us more about it he then told us

about his plans for Thetford. It was a great experience’

Franzi Y7

‘When the Mayor visited with the Mayoress and the Sword Bearer,

they brought a big sword with them which was very old. The Mayor

talked to us and we asked him questions which he answered fully.

The Prep School looked like they were enjoying it as a few of them

got hold of the sword.’

Isabelle Y7

‘We were lucky enough to receive a visit from the Mayor of Thetford

who talked to us about what his job involved and answered any

questions we had for him. The Thetford Sword Bearer was also there

and we got to see the Sword of Thetford. Overall it was a very

interesting experience to learn about what the Mayor did and his

plans to improve Thetford.’

Madeleine Y7

‘When the Mayor visited it was quite interesting because he explained to us how he does his

job. The Sword Bearer explained to us that you need to hold the sword in a particular way in

front of the Queen. He showed us the Sword and a child at the front even got to hold it. I

enjoyed it very much and I can’t wait for his next visit’

Evangeline Y7

‘I learned a lot about the Mayor’s job and I learnt about what a Sword Bearer is. The Mayor

talked about what his plans were about Thetford and he also said that he bought the

playground near Castle Hill for a lot of money’

Christoph Y7

‘Dear Mayor,

Thank you for taking the time to come and visit our school. Your talk

was very interesting and we learnt a lot about you and your job, as

well as the history of Thetford. You gave us an informative answer to

all the questions that were asked and this gave us good insight of

what it is like to be Mayor. Everybody enjoyed listening to what you

had to say and learning about the town. One of the highlights of the

morning was seeing the sword and hearing about when and why it is

used. Thank you again for taking the time to come and visit us.’

Alana Y9

‘I have been inspired by the amount of responsibilities and work that the Mayor does. He

has some very interesting stories about the cast variety of events that he attends.’

PREP SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR AFTERNOON

A few weeks ago 6D were given a choice of 7 different science

experiments and in small groups of 3 they had been working hard to

develop the experiments and research the science behind them in

preparation for a Science Fair.

Arthur, Ethan and Tom chose

Colourful Chromatography.

This involved using water to separate the colours in

felt pens. This is a very successful separating

technique and produces lovely colourful results.

Gracie, Matthew and Sophie were given Sugar Crisis

and started off investigating dissolving sugar, but this

quickly took a change in direction and they decided to

investigate if the colour of an M & M affects how quickly the sugar coating dissolves.

Hamish, Owen and Ben were originally tasked with Fruit

Power; using fruit and vegetables to light a bulb.

However, this did not work even after a huge amount of

perseverance, especially from Hamish, so we decided to

try something different. Their new activity was Bubble in

a Bubble. Can you blow a bubble on a table and then

blow another bubble

inside it?

Joe, Kit and Ryan spent time investigating separating

techniques. They were given some different mixtures and

had to decide on how to separate them using sieves,

magnets, tweezers, funnels and filters.

Page 7: TGS Newsletter Issue 23 Friday, 18th March 2016

7 Issue No 23/2015-2016

Sam, Cassidy and Freddie chose Fizz Pop Rockets. This is a

very dramatic experiment involving a Berocca tube, an alka

seltzer tablet and some warm water. Many great explosions

followed!

Cathy, Josh and Max were investigating dancing raisins.

They explained how carbon dioxide bubbles can be made

when vinegar and bicarbonate of soda are mixed and that

the bubbles of gas attach

themselves to the wrinkly

surface of the raisins making them bounce up where some

bubbles pop, so they drop back down again.

Maia, Sam and Emily looked at how different acids and alkalis

change the colour of paper soaked in universal indicator paper.

On Wednesday we invited all the other pupils in Prep School to

attend our Science Fair to have a go at all the different

experiments. Max, Elliott, Gabriel, Connie and Harry all left festooned in stickers having

had lots of fun and excitement. Y4 and Y5 also enjoyed themselves,

especially with the Fizz Pop Rocket and they left with a certificate

each.

The afternoon was full of energy and everyone appeared to enjoy

themselves whilst learning some science.

The Y6 students have been fantastic to work with over the last few

weeks and they performed superbly during the Fair too.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH RECOGNITION

On Thursday 3rd March, Mr Stuart Simpson, accompanied by

Mr Bedford, was invited to Dunston Hall to receive his

certificate to show that Thetford Grammar School is now a

Direct Licence Centre for Duke of Edinburgh.

The certificate was presented by Phil Brown, ex British

Olympic athlete, who is the Regional Director of Central

England Regional Office for Duke of Edinburgh.

SPORT RELIEF FRIDAY 11th MARCH

Staff and pupils had a fantastic time on Friday 11th March

doing their bit for Sport Relief. Pupils of Prep School and

a range of Senior School pupils took part in a sponsored

kilometre Conga creatively mapped out by Mr Hill.

Students and staff completed four rounds of a loopy 250

metre course and

they were accompanied by music from cloisters and

portable percussion.

Thank you to everyone who took part and to everyone

who sponsored the participants. Details of final funds

raised will be released after Easter.

Non-uniform Day last week raised £232.35 so thank

you to everyone who donated.

NOTTINGHAM UNIVERSITY VISIT

Y12 enjoyed a day on campus at Nottingham University

with student ambassadors and the Outreach Team to

gather information about Higher Education. An added

bonus was meeting up with former TGS Head Girl Bobbi

Findlay, in her final year of a degree in French and

Spanish.

COMMONWEALTH DAY

On Commonwealth Day, Ed Briars, Holly Simpson, Gus Altuccini,

Jack Bercovici, Gaby Hunter-Short and Isobel Tod represented TGS

at Westminster Abbey, celebrating Her Majesty’s 90th birthday in

some style. They were accompanied by Mr Bedford, Mrs Linda

Pearson and myself.

On Monday 14th March, a TGS delegation of Gus Altuccini, Ed

Briars, Holly Simpson, Jack Bercovici, Gabrielle Hunter-Short,

Isobel Tod, Mr Stephen Spencer and Mrs Linda Pearson left for

London to attend the Commonwealth Observance Day at

Westminster Abbey. On arriving at Oxford Circus, resident blue

guide Jack Bercovici directed the party along the streets of

London taking in sights including Regents St, St James’ Park and

Horse Guards Parade. After a whistle-stop tour of the outside of

the Methodist Church, the group enjoyed a short break at the

famous Wesley Café.

Once refreshed, the

Houses of Parliament and the Thames were next on

the list. After lunch in Parliament Square under the

53 flags of the Commonwealth, the group headed to

the Abbey to queue up and see how often they

could enter the frames of the many BBC cameras

that littered the forecourt. Once seated inside, there

was time for some celebrity spotting, especially the

myriad of politicians who swarmed in, including Messrs Cameron, Major and Farage. Ellie

Goulding sang a delightfully tuneful rendition of ‘Fields of Gold’.

GERMAN EXCHANGE MARCH 2016

On Thursday 10th March A group of eight TGS pupils,

accompanied by Mr Durling and Miss Humphrey,

travelled to Stansted airport to embark on another

exciting German Exchange programme with our

partner school Gymnasium Brede in Brakel near

Paderborn and Hamelin.

After a smooth flight to Dortmund the travellers were

met by Herr Hentschel from Gymnasium Brede. Herr

Hentschel teaches English and Sport and has been organising Anglo-German exchanges

with Mr Durling since 1995.

A short coach ride from Dortmund airport brought the

intrepid adventurers to our host school in Brakel

where the German exchange partners and their

families greeted their guests with a warm welcome

followed by the first evening at home with the German

families.

On Friday at 7.50am the first full day of the German

Exchange programme started with a brief meeting

with Mr Durling and Miss Humphrey in the Sixth

Page 10: TGS Newsletter Issue 23 Friday, 18th March 2016

10 Issue No 23/2015-2016

Form library at Gymnasium Brede where TGS pupils had the opportunity to tell of their first

impressions and positive experiences of settling in with their host families. A short tour of

the school by Herr Koch (Headmaster of Gymnasium Brede) gave the group an insight into

the facilities and everyday life of the Brede pupils. Stefan and Will said a few words of

thanks in German and presented Herr Koch with a copy of the latest Fulmerstonian and

other TGS gifts before departing for the excursion to Hamelin.

Despite the chilly morning air in Hamelin, the TGS

pupils, staff and their German partners enjoyed a

very warm welcome from the very entertaining Pied

Piper. The 'Rattenfaenger' (the original German 'Rat

Catcher') led the TGS-Brede group through

the quaint old streets of Hamelin whilst telling the

true story behind this famous legend. Fortunately the

group was not led away to perish in the river Weser

nor to disappear into a cave full of sweets! He safely

delivered everybody back to the old town centre

where time was available to explore the town in search of a warm snack or two!

After the lunch break the group walked to the famous Glashuette glass-blowing workshop

where the warm air from the workshop's kilns (only 1200 - 1500 degrees Celsius) kept

everybody comfortable as they received a bilingual demonstration of the traditional local

glass-making craft.

Shortly after 6.00 pm the group arrived back in Brakel to enjoy a weekend of family

activities, including trips to local cities and a weekend mini-break in Berlin for one lucky

TGS pupil!

Arriving for an early Monday morning start Period one at Gymnasium Brede starts at 7.50

am, TGS pupil talked about their busy family weekend activities including trips to Berlin,

Cologne, Düsseldorf, a horse-riding event, bowling,

open-air evening laser show at the local Hermann

monument and much more!

TGS pupils attended a lesson with their German

partners before posing for a group photo for the

local Press. A formal ceremony of welcome with the

Deputy Mayor followed in the Town Council

Chambers before discovering the history of Brakel

with History teacher Herr Peters who led the group

on a town trail.

At midday the pupils walked back to school for a

much-needed hot meal before attending another lesson or two then returning home for a

relaxing evening with their host families.

The next day saw one of the main highlights of the programme - the day at VW's exciting

Autostadt Science Park in Wolfsburg. Here the pupils were transported through the state-of-

the-art production, witnessing the busy technicians and computers assembling the new VW

vehicles. Everybody also enjoyed visiting the main exhibition halls where some of the

Page 11: TGS Newsletter Issue 23 Friday, 18th March 2016

11 Issue No 23/2015-2016

world’s most precious and unusual vehicles were on

display as a reminder of VW’s world-wide role.

The farewell evening on Tuesday was a very cosy affair in

the rustic 18th century “Alte Meierei” tavern in Brakel. The

delicious buffett was followed by a skittles competition

and a brief slide-show to enable everybody to relive what

was a really enjoyable and successful trip.

On the last day there was just enough time to sit in on

another lesson at school before a brief stroll into town for

some last minute shopping and a well-deserved treat at the local ice cream parlour ‘Eiscafé

Venedig’.

In the afternoon the pupils travelled to Dortmund airport from where they flew back to

London, arriving back at TGS at 6.00 pm where their parents were waiting for them, eager to

hear all their exciting stories.

This exchange trip was a great success, enjoyed by TGS pupils,Brede pupils and their

families who had clearly enjoyed hosting their English visitors.

PREP SCHOOL HOUSE MUSIC COMPETITION

On Tuesday, the Prep School held their annual House

Music competition for instrumental and vocal soloists.

There were two performers from each House, chosen

after earlier auditions. The children all performed

fantastically and impressed our two judges, Finn

Humphris and Emma Ruddy. The judges were

looking at how well the children knew their piece and

how musically they performed it. After listening to

solos on piano, voice and clarinet the judges spent a

little bit of time deliberating and announced the

winners. Joint 4th place went to Sophie Peace and

Hamish Russell – both playing piano pieces, 3rd place went to Sam Bercovici – also on

piano, Maia Foreman was awarded 2nd place with a very well-performed unaccompanied

vocal solo and Cathy took 1st place performing her own composition, accompanying herself

singing. Well done to all those who participated and especially to Cronsheys who won with

60 points, narrowly beating Coles with 55. Thank you to Finn and Emma for their

encouraging words and for making some tricky decisions.

JUNIOR SCHOOLS’ CHALLENGE QUIZ

On Wednesday 16th March a group of five Y8

TGS students took part in the first round of the

Junior Schools’ Challenge Quiz. This is an

extremely challenging general knowledge quiz

based on the University Challenge format. In the

first match, Thomas Gainsborough School from

Sudbury beat Culford’s B team with a score of

480 points to Culford’s 140.

In the second round, TGS excelled to beat

Culford’s A team with a score of 360 points to their 220. This took us through to a final play-

off against Thomas Gainsborough who proved to be quicker on the buzzer and who

narrowly ended up winning with a score of 400 points to our 330. As a result, Thomas

Gainsborough School will move forward to the next round, for which we wish them the best

of luck. Congratulations go out to the TGS team of Elizabeth Wright, Shaz Sanjeevvijay, Ye-

Yint Win-Naing, Sebastian Floyd and to their Captain Tom Buckley. Additional thanks are

given to Holly Simpson who acted as timekeeper, to score-keeper Omar El- Oakley and to

Mr. Roger Osborne from Hethersett Old Hall School, who acted as the visiting quizmaster.

TOWEL APPEAL

East Winch Wildlife Centre are desperately seeking towels for

seals and we thought Easter could be a good time to rummage

through cupboards to see if we have a spare towel or two to help.

The Centre is renowned for its care of orphaned, sick or injured

seals and providing towels is one way in which we could support.

If you do find a towel or two, please hand them into the office for

now and we will update you with how the support goes!
