CA1F Chapter Directors
FROM THE HEAD FOX
Our trip is over. We had a great time and fun with Chapter MO-I and visiting family and attend-ing Wing Ding. It’s always great to get back home. We missed our other family. You guys. It may be hard to believe but we really did. Now it is time to get cracking with Fun Run and other events District Rally and
all our other rides.
We want to thank Dana and Carol for stepping in as Chapter Directors, and Malcolm as the
Old Guys ride coordinator.
There is an article in the August Wing World magazine that is interesting reading. It’s from the GWRRA Director. It’s called Riding Glue. It really describes chapter life and how it works or
doesn’t. Every new Chapter Di-rector has his/hers ideas how things should go but the impor-tance is riding. The chapter that rides together stays together. If there are uniforms they wear them with pride and hang to-gether as a group when they ride. It shows unity. It’s Riding Glue. The article covers more than what I described and I really encourage all of you to
read it.
Keep the dirty side down and
be safe out there.
Ed and Kay Carroll,
6
Assistant Chapter Directors Dana & Carol Rowley
Hello folks. 1st things 1st. Ed & Kay, glad your back safely from your jaunt into the land of blissful weather, fine cooking, wonderful family, and misery. Well …. 1 or 2 out of 4 isn’t bad. For you folks that are from that ―country‖…. I should apologize about making fun of the Midwest … but …. I just can’t. Besides everyone that is from the Midwest is now here – in California – land of beautiful weather, rolling oceans, and some great back roads of all types for clearing our minds, messing up our hair, and keep-ing our sanity in this busy day and age. Carol & I want to thank the Chapter for your support the last couple of months while Ed & Kay were gone. We had a few laughs at the staff meetings and a few more at the Breakfast meetings. I did my best to embarrass Terry & Risa. Hopefully they didn’t mind because it sure was fun. Hope you all had fun also. Its always nice to have new blood get involved. They bring in new ideas and tend to look at things a little differ-ently. After I do my time as Chapter Director we will need new blood again to bring in their new ideas. And so it goes on. New blood is the lifeline of any organization. Ed & I both have goals to bring new blood into the Chapter. Whether it be new members or maybe current members that just want to get involved - both would bring in fresh new ideas and keep that vital life-blood flowing. As new staff positions open up – don’t be surprised if either Ed or myself come up to you and ask if you are ready to get a little more involved than what you already are. Whether it be a staff position or just helping out at a one-time event, if we do come up to
you – it’s because we feel confident in your abilities to fill that need for the Chapter. I also want to thank Bill & Carrie
Hutchins and Ralph Richarson for fill-
ing in for Mike and Elma while they were gone. You did a great job. I want to thank Bruce (the deer slayer) for sharing with us at the last meeting his close affiliation with nature (actually we are very glad nothing serious happened). Also thanks to Robert & Janet for the Drive-in movie nights along with the home baked goodies by Tammy and Crystal and the homemade slaw salad or whatever it was by Bonita. Bud & Mary – thanks again for your Dinner Rides. Special thanks to the Ride Leaders last month as well as their group leaders and backdoors. Without you we would just be another social group waiting to see what life is go-ing to bring us. Instead - we are taking life by the handlebars, living life to the fullest, and telling the busy world that no one on this earth can take away the wind in our face. Now go for a ride – you deserve it.

Membership Director Nancy Brody
Well, another month has gone by and we are still growing as a Chapter, as
it should be. Wonderful, wonderful!
We have three new Chapter members
this month, so plesase welcome them
when you see them.
Doug Bergen and his wife Gail are
out of Alpine. Their first ride with us
was last months Full Moon Ride. Then Saturday, July 24, they
joined a bunch of us again and rode
up to the Irwindale Speedway.
Next is Dan Reed. Dan also joined
us for the Irwindale Speedway
ride. Dan's girlfriend, Linda Var-gason, is his riding partner. She is
not yet a GW member or Chapter
member, but I think that may change soon. Unfortunatly, we may not see
much of Linda for a while, due to her
job which has her working Satur-days. Dan and Linda first ride with
us was for out of Fun Bike Center to
the Mira Mar Marine Base a couple
of months back.
We're so glad that these wonderful
people have decided to come back and join our Chapter. Welcome to
you all!
July has not given us the best riding
weather, but at least it hasn't been
blazing hot yet. So lets get out there
and make the most with our riding in August and let's keep out Chapter
growing.
Ride safe and keep the rubber side
down.

Well, it‟s my turn in the fire, uh spot-
light. My name is Dave, David, hey
you (just not late for a meal) Flitcraft.
I‟ve been a GWRRA member since 2003 when I got my current GL1800
and with CA-1F since then. I‟ve been
riding „wings‟ since 1986 when I traded in my Suzuki GS850 shaft for a
brand new 1984 Aspencade. I‟ve
been riding street bikes since 1978 exclusively. I couldn‟t afford a car
then, and never thought to change
modes of transportation since.
I was born to a career Army Officer in
Columbus, GA. I was so impressed I
have not been back there since we moved within one year of my arrival.
From there we went to Lawton, OK (2
times), Nuremberg, Germany, El Paso, TX (2X), Ft. Lauderdale FL
(2X), , Homestead, FL, Monterey,
CA, Colorado Springs, CO, Aurora,
CO, Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Heidel-berg, Germany, and Munich, Ger-
many before I started out on my own.
In that time, I was traveling with a brother (born in Nuremberg) and went
to 10 different schools by the time I
graduated High School (Heidelberg)
and one year of college (University of Maryland) in Munich.
When I left home in 1977, we were returning from Germany and I was off
to a real college at Kansas State Uni-
versity. Talk about a cultural shock. I was coming from a college the size
of the Midway post office in San
Diego with 4 floors to a campus the
size of San Diego city. On top of that, the people were mostly from Kansas
and had never been anywhere else. Needless to say I didn‟t last long in
that environment. In 1978 I decided
I wasn‟t done traveling and what bet-
ter organization for lots of adventure and what I considered (and still con-
sider) a descent job opportunity than
the US Navy.
Oh, prior to enlisting, K-State is
where I got the motorcycle bug with my first bike - a Suzuki 400. One, it
was all I could afford, two I was an
avid bicyclist at the time and three it
was a heck of a lot of fun – all except adjusting the chain and the frequent
nails. I had to borrow my room-
mate‟s car to get my drivers license and practiced shifting the motorcycle
up and down the country roads. Mo-
torcycle safety classes? What are those? Besides, there wasn‟t a driv-
ing test for motorcycles at the time.
I put close to 5000 miles on that bike
before I shipped out to boot camp in Great Mistakes (Great Lakes), Ill.
The change of homesteads, while I was in the Navy, was not as exten-
sive as it had been with my parents.
Most of my traveling was while I
was stationed aboard ships and mo-bile units. The homesteads were:
Great Lakes, IL (2X), Orlando, FL
(2X), Windsor, CT, Norfolk, VA, Gaeta, Italy, Fremont, OH, Pearl
Harbor, HI and San Diego, CA. The
sea commands I traveled with were: USS Independence (CV-62), USS
Puget Sound (AD-38), USS Safe-
guard (ARS-50), USNS Sioux (T-
ATF 171), and Mobile, Diving & (Continued on page 29)
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR STAFF

Golden State Gem California District Directors
Bill & Rene Johnson
DD Review,
Greetings everyone, its nice to
be back home after our voyage to
Wing Ding & beyond. As most of
you know, Rene & I embarked on a
one month, 5,000 mile hiatus to
Iowa to enjoy all the festivities
Wing Ding 32 had to offer as well
as other distractions we found
along the way.
Many of you tracked our voyage
on our SPOT Global Tracking sys-
tem, and we enjoyed the e-mail
chat as we traveled. Anyway, we
started out on June 16th heading
for Rene’s family reunion in Priest
River, Idaho but only made it about
150 miles when my alternator died
on my GL 1800. Yes, alternators on
1800’s die too, or so I found out.
Anyway, thank goodness we have
the GWRRA Tow Buster service,
they sent out a flat bed truck and
picked up my Wing (NAPATOY) &
trailer (TAILGUN) and hauled me
to the closest Honda repair shop in
Redding. Unfortunately, the shop
didn’t have a replacement in stock,
so I had to leave the bike there for
a few days until they got a new one
in and completed the fix.
So we rented a car in Redding
and continued our trip to Idaho to
attend the reunion. I returned to
Redding a few days later to re-
trieve NAPATOY and TAILGUN
which were all polished up and
ready to ride. I left the shop at
around 9:00 AM and pulled into
Priest River 12 hours later complet-
ing my longest ride to date in one
day – 730 miles. By the way, Rene
didn’t accompany me on that leg of
the leg of the trip, she stayed in
Idaho visiting her family while I
enjoyed the beautiful back country
of Oregon.
We left Idaho on June 25th
heading for Des Moines, and ar-
rived on June 28th. I was almost
sorry to finish that leg of the ride
end, the weather had been perfect
(between 72 & 82 deg), and how
can you beat a ride through Mon-
tana & Wyoming on a Goldwing.
Wing Ding was typical this year
with what seemed like hundreds of
vendors, and thousands of GWRRA
members (8,200 to be more spe-
cific) gathered in one mid-western
town. The hi-light for us was to be (Continued on page 13)

13
able to watch a few of our own show
the rest of the country how to ride.
As you are probably already aware,
Jerry Cowen (CA-1M / Assistant Dis-
trict Educator) earned the Goldwing
1500 1up (Expert) award again this
year, and then Lois climbed on board
to help win the 2up (Experienced)
FIRST PLACE TOP-GUN honors. If
you have ever seen Jerry spin that
1500 of his, you know Lois must be
one brave woman. OH yea, before I
forget, Jerry also secured a place in
history with one other “Win”. He was
also honored with the highly coveted
“Cone Killer” award for knocking over
the most cones while competing. Don’t
let that fool you, he knocked them
over with his antennas – try to top
that.
Not to be out-done, Val Tait (also
CA-1M) on his Black-Cherry GL-1800
earned his first ever 1up
(Experienced) FIRST PLACE TOP-
GUN trophy, then proceeded to have
his bride (Barb) climb onboard and
help win SECOND PLACE in the 2up
TOP-GUN (Experienced) competition!
You have no idea how proud we are
that they ride for the best state in
the country.
On a related note, here is my plug
to get you all to send in your District
Rally reservations. I am honored to
announce that Jerry Cowan and the
“Gold Angles” will be performing at
our District Rally in Mammoth this
year, so be sure to come out and
(Continued from page 10) watch them in action.
Back to our trip, we finished
our route by staying a couple days
with some of Rene’s cousin’s (Bob
& Pat Morrison – Montrose, IA)
where “Sheriff” Nick Riolo & I
were honored to be official
awarded the title of
“Cannoneer’s”. You see, Cousin Bob
is a collector of 1800’s vintage
Howitzers’ & Mortars, so he al-
lowed us to play “Big” on the 4th of
July. (we just have to keep those
1800’s in the family).
We finished our ride home via
Ouray, CO where we spent a cou-
ple days with some friends I used
to work with back in my Long
Beach Naval Shipyard days. We
then made our way through
Tonopah, NV and over the Sonora
Pass to home “just because we
have never gone that way before”.
Again, beautiful country, and
great weather.
All & all, the trip was perfect
in every way (except that alterna-
tor thing). Great country, great
friends, wonderful family, and
bragging rights for California.
How can you top that???
So I guess the next time you
will hear from us will be up n
Mammoth. When Rene & I were
considering stepping up as DD’s,
the overwhelming majority of you
begged us to find a new location
to hold the District Rally. Well, (Continued on page 24)

The Education Corner
Chapter Educator Mike & Elma Maury
Becoming an ―Active Rider‖
When you decide to go for a ride, what are you thinking about? Where is your attention? Are you running through your mental to-do list for work or your honey- do list for home? Are you re-visiting conversations, discussions or disagreements that have happened earlier in the day? Riding a motorcycle is roughly 80% to 90% mental and the rest is physical. Every time you get ready to ride, you need to have your mind in the right place. Your mental attitude plays a huge part in your ability to ride safely and enjoy the ride. It is essential that you shift gears and focus only on the ride to insure an incident free trip no matter how short the ride is. So how do you make the shift from thinking about daily issues to the ride? One excellent idea is to establish a routine that you go through before each ride. Start by looking over your bike and do a mental T-CLOC. Check the tires for proper inflation tread and damage. Look under the bike for oily or wet spots and determine their cause. Is it safe to ride your bike? Be honest with yourself about the condi-tion of your bike, do not take chances. It’s better to stay home than put both yourself and others at risk. (Always do a very thorough, physical T-CLOC regularly as well, and especially before going on a long ride. Next, finish putting on your gear. Most
people put things on in the same sequence every time. Your pants and boots usually go on in the house, while you put your jacket, helmet, eye protection and gloves on out at the bike. Consider the weather and make sure you have packed all that you will need for that ride. While your bike is warming up, check your fuel level. Do you have enough to get where you plan to go? Do you have all the route information you need? Once you’ve completed the above steps, you are ready to focus on your trip. When you shift your bike into gear, shift your mind into ―active rider mode‖ because nothing else matters but your safety. All your thoughts should be about the ride you are be-ginning. Your eyes should be ac-tively and aggressively scanning your surroundings. Make sure that you are aware of others and that they are aware of you. Evaluate your responses to possible hazards and keep your options open until you have to choose one – the best one to keep you safe without any drama. Riding in ―active rider mode‖ allows you to ride with the right attitude – the attitude that it is your job to ride safely until you park your bike & turn off the key. Developing a set routine to put your mind into this mode will allow every ride you take to be a safer and much more pleasant ex-perience.

―11 Speed Stories‖ 1 - Fastest: Superbike Racing School, Laguna Seca Raceway, Monterey. Probably 135 on the straight, nothing compared with the real racebikes. 2 - Fastest: In 1961, I rode a (new to the world) Honda 500cc bike. On the way to a Death Valley rally, I laid down flat on the seat (like the famous pic-ture) and got to 105 mph. No real riding gear at that time, I was only protected by helmet, gloves, and stupidity. 3 - I took each of my 3 kids over 100 mph WITH ME on my ST1100 so that they would never feel the need to try it with one of their friends. They were cured. 4 - The fastest I have ever been is 110 while getting up to speed on the free-way. Had to fit into the traffic flow and what better than passing two or three dozen cars and trucks until I felt safe pulling into the traffic. 5 - Fastest Ride: A few weeks after I bought my new GL1800 I decided to see what it would do. I got the bike up to 110mph and it was still pulling. At that point I decided it was going to do more than I was willing to do so I backed-off the throttle. I found out what I wanted to know and have not been above 100mph since that day. 6 - The fastest was on a friend’s KAW ZX1100 which was highly modified. When I looked down at the Speedo it was better than 135 MPH and I backed off as the white lines where solid and
there was no brakes between them. Too fast and too stupid and too young and dumb and full of ***. 7 - FASTEST, 135 ON A HOPPED UP HARLEY IN 1958, THROT-TLE WIDE OPEN 1 8 - 30 ON A GOLDWING A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, THROTTLE NOT WIDE OPEN 9 - Fastest I ever went on a bike? Boy that's a tie between my 1957 James Captain and my GPZ Kawa-saki. The James had a 197cc single cylin-der two-cycle engine and a 3 speed transmission. The Kawasaki had a 550cc 4 cylinder 4 cycle engine and a 5 speed. The James was the first bike I ever owned and the first powered vehicle I ever drove. I knew it was fast when I first started riding it to work and the speedometer pegged at over 100mph just riding on the city streets. I couldn't believe that the city busses were passing me so easily at that speed. I was riding the Kawasaki on the Autobahn in Germany (No speed lim-its!) one evening trying to get home to Holland before midnight. It topped out at 125mph and I held it there for a while until it went on re-serve and I started looking for a gas station. Just before I reached one I passed a couple of German riders who followed me into the gas station. One of them came over and said in German "Kawasaki Schnell!" "Ya" replied in my best German. "1100 Ka-wasaki zeer scnell!" he said pointing to my bike. "Nien 1100" I replied and

pointed to the side cover where it said GPZ550. "Schiesse" he replied. Which I took to be a favorable comment, and off I went home. So I don't know which was faster the James or the Kawasaki. My guess is neither of them would have been able to keep up with those city busses back in Liverpool. 10 - Fastest driven – 107 on a straight stretch of good road, very-very light traf-fic – just to say I’ve done it……twice. Once with each Gold Wing. 11 - "THE FASTEST I EVER WENT ON A BIKE, AND WHY" Last August, I had been riding my new Gold Wing for only a few weeks. One Sunday morning, early, with hardly any other cars around, I was headed north on the 15, just past the 94 freeway. A small Ninja bike came up alongside me, the driver waved, and then took off like a rocket. I turned the throttle, and to my surprise, caught up to that little Ninja bike in no time at all, riding as smooth as if I was doing 60, sitting full upright. I took the lane to his left, and saw that he was also visibly surprised. At that same time, I noticed a sputtering loss of power, and looked down at my speedometer to see that I was doing 120mph. I backed off the throttle and that Ninja bike continued on. I was concerned about the loss of power until I heard in a chat group that it was just the governor on the bike kick-ing in. I am happy to know that my Wing can do what it did, and it gives me an additional sense of pride, but I don't have any desire to try it again. Just knowing it can is enough.

Salvage Unit 1. With these sea com-
mands I was able to see, at the gov-
ernment‟s expense, every country that the Mediterranean Sea touches,
the Caribbean Islands, South Af-
rica‟s eastern seaboard, Australia, the Hawaiian Islands, Canada and
Alaska.
In 1980, between boot camp and my
first sea command, I met my wife,
Karen. She decided I was worth
marrying (in 1981) even with my wanderlust trait. Karen stayed with
me through my many deployments
and interesting and diverse duty sta-tions. We also managed to have two
kids along the way, one girl (Kira) in
Naples, Italy and the other, a boy (Bryan) in Fremont, OH. I am also
now a Grandpa with two boys (2 & 4
years old).
My job title started out as a Nuclear
Powered Electrician, but the Navy
and I came to an understanding there was a better path for me before I got
to a sea command. I actually had
orders for a submarine. I went to a
conventional aircraft carrier as a regular electrician. During my time
as an electrician I worked for and got
my national journeyman‟s certificate. I had plans on doing that when I got
out after 20 years. Half way through
my career I changed up and went to dive school to become a hard hat
salvage diver.
When I retired from the Navy in 1998, after 20 years, I had the option
(Continued from page 9)
of continuing the diving gig or work in construction as an electrician.
Having never really worked as a ci-
vilian, I found out my national jour-
neyman‟s certificate was not going to be honored and I was going to
start at the bottom of the totem pole.
I had enough of diving so the next logical step was to go work in a jail.
I find that government work is much
safer.
Well, that‟s the short version. As far
as GWRRA is concerned, I discov-
ered them when I was out enjoying my new wing. I ended up following
another 1800 for some 50 miles be-
fore he pulled over and we chatted for a bit. I don‟t remember who it
was, but he told me about CA-1F‟s
meetings and what GW was about. The next available weekend I
showed up. Mike and Elma were the
CD‟s. Mike and I got to know each
other real well on one of my first group rides up Palomar Mountain.
I‟ve gotten better at group riding
through lots of practice and making sure Mike is really going to pull out.
I‟ve recently taken over the duties as
Editor in Chief of this little publica-
tion and I‟m enjoying the heck out of all our activities.
See y‟all when I can make our next chapter meeting or ride.
