Normally the pool opens on the second week of November, being this Friday 12 November. Cabonne Council were advised in March this year that they would have to advertise the three year tender, however it was not done until August, and again in October. Although the Canowindra Pool Action Group asked for a meeting to create a contingency plan in the event of no tenders, nothing has been done. On Tuesday 2 November Council representatives called a meeting to be held the next day for key users groups. About 15 people attended, along with Council representatives Rob Staples, Director of Engineering, and Dennis O'Brien, Urban Assets Coordinator, and our local Councillors. At the outcome of the meeting a few plans were tabled for the short and long term. As there was no guarantee given that the pool will open to the public in the near future, it was decided to hold a public meeting to discuss what to do. At present there is some talk of the pool opening for user groups, such as Swimming Club, if they have adequate lifesaving qualifications, and are an incorporated body. This will depend on whether Council can find someone to test the water quality on a daily basis. This will also not open the pool for the general public and is only a short term partial solution. We need to get vocal and get a solution to this problem. Not having a town pool will have a huge social, mental and physical effect on the residents, as well as a financial, tourism and lifestyle impact (eg people going out of town to swim then do their shopping there). Who would want to come to a town that is 40+ degrees in the summer, with no lovely beach or river to swim in safely, and no pool either? There is a public meeting about this issue next Wednesday night 10 November 6.30pm at the Canowindra Bowling Club. Please show your support for the Canowindra Pool by attending the meeting. Council representatives and all local media have been invited. If you know of anyone interested in running the pool, please encourage them to talk to Rob Staples at Cabonne Council on 02 6390 7100. To the editor... Just a quick email to let you know that myself, Knight Boy, and Captain Lycra both successfully completed the MS Sydney to Gong Ride on the Sunday just passed. A glorious day was had with Sydney really turning on the charm with the weather, which was a relief after the dreary Friday and Saturday weather that prompted me to go to my old trusty bike shop to purchase some wet weather tyres on the Saturday. A capacity turn out of ten thousand cyclists were in attendance of all different shapes and sizes and walks of life. A tandem cycle went passed me at one stage which I struggled to keep in their slipstream to find out that the guy pedalling on the back was in fact completely blind. My hat certainly goes off to that duo, I might add also that they quickly became a dot in the distance as they disappeared from view such was their heroic speed through the slippery roads of the National Park. I have almost reached my goal of one thousand dollars thanks to the kind donations of my sponsors, and would also like to point out that its still not to late to sponsor either Andrew Holmes or myself for anyone who wished to do so but hasn't got around to it yet. Also the team which we rode for is having a fundraising auction if any local businesses has any-thing they would like to donate for the auction. I would be glad to take any enquiries either via email [email protected] or on 0459 034 001. I managed to complete the 90km journey in a time of three hours, and Andrew came in with a time of three hours twenty minutes. Donations can be made by visiting www.gongride.org.au clicking on donate then searching for either Andrew Holmes or Corey Knight. Or by contacting my on the above phone number or via my email. The warm fuzzy feeling you get from supporting such a worthwhile cause is included in the cost of the donation Thanks again to all my sponsors, Corey Knight aka Knight Rider... Canowindra

THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN As Remembrance Day approaches, it’s a timely reminder to again consider the debate surrounding Afghanistan. In recent weeks it has evolved into a situation where members of parliament, which ever side they might be represent-ing, need to explain to the Australian people why we as a government must recommit to this war effort. The consen-sus in the Australian parliament is we need to remain in Afghanistan and that we are doing the right thing by the Aus-tralian public. I believe we need to explain to the people in our electorates why these decisions have been made. There appears to be an increasing feeling of angst among the Australian public and a general understanding that the war is less popular than it used to be. This is not an unrealistic reaction, but I do not think this means the majority of Australians do not want us to be in Afghanistan. Quite obviously, it would be preferable not to have to engage in situations of conflict, but in reality this is not the case and in the meantime we can only educate the public as to the needs of the situation, pledge our support to the troops and do what is right for Australia. For me, as an MP, there is no bigger decision than making the call to send our troops into a war situation. For those who fought in the First and Second World Wars, who went overseas to defend our country on foreign soil made an enormous sacrifice so we could enjoy a conflict free society. But unfortunately today’s world is not free of violence and all Australians, whether directly or indirectly, have felt the increasing instability. Threats of terrorism dominate the newspaper headlines and infiltrate not just the newsroom, but all the way through society and into our homes. It is therefore imperative for our Government to make informed decisions and tackle these threats rather than wait for them to land on our shores. I am one of the very few people outside the military who has had the privilege of visiting our troops on the ground. On Anzac Day two years ago I visited Kanda-har, the main base in Afghanistan. Each nation stationed in Afghanistan, including the Afghan National Army, came to the Australian dawn service – not because it was also an important day for them, but because they knew it was a very big day for us. I will never forget being there at the dawn service with our troops, and alongside the British, Americans, French, Canadians and Dutch, it was an enor-mously moving experience. I think everybody who has relatives or friends in Afghanistan should be aware just how good and well-trained our troops are and how much they believe in what they are doing. From working with the Afghans, teaching them how to build schools and hospitals, to teaching trade skills and training the Afghan National Army - they are extraordinarily compe-tent. There are plenty of good, moral rea-sons, as to why we are there and I per-sonally believe that this is something we have to do and deal with as soon as pos-sible. The Hon John Cobb MP for Calare Shadow Minister for Agriculture & Food Security

Canowindra High School students from Rear 8 through to Year 11 helped at many venues during the 2010 Canowindra Show 24 to 25 September. The very popular animal nursery was once again run by high school students including Rosemary Wilson, Casey Edwards, Melissa Johnson and Demi Grimshaw. The girls did a fantastic job keeping the young children very happy and the animals safe.

SWIMMING CLUB NEWS Canowindra Swimming Club may commence this Friday at 5:45pm, there is no way to sign up before hand so just turn up on Friday night. The swimming pool may be open for groups providing they a suitably qualified person, ie bronze medallion holder, present to oversee the group. The town meeting at the Bowling Club on Wednesday at 6:30 will shed light on the matter, so listen a school assemblies for updates on Thursday morning. While swimming club has not had any registration days this will not matter too much as all registrations need to be done on line this year. Registrar, Vanessa Fagan, will help all swimmers with this form of registration if they require it. Registration fees this year will be $60 per swimmer, plus an administration fee of about 0:60 cents will be charged by Swimming Australia for registering online. Of this $60 Canowindra Swimming Club gets about eight dollars: Swimming Aus-tralia gets $49 and Mountains & Plains Swimming gets $3. So students, listen at Assembly on Thurs-day, grown ups (?) ask at The Phoenix and we will see if the pool is going to be open ready for action on Friday night.

Senior Cricket Report The disrupted season continued for Canowindra’s A grade cricket team on Saturday when their match against Grenfell was washed out 2 overs into the second innings. Captain Nick Guthrie won the toss and elected bat. The Grenfell opening bowlers bowled with discipline and this payed off for them with both Canowindra opening batsmen Nick Whatman (4) and Peter Guthrie (11) back in the pavilion within the first 10 overs. The momentum continued for Grenfell through Canowindra’s middle order with continuous wickets falling. Canowindra scrambled to 7-51 at drinks after 23 overs, Brendan Traves was the only batsman who looked like he could mend the innings together, he played with determination before being undone for 10. After drinks Haydon Hodge (12) and Jacob Devlin (22) played aggressively and managed to put on 18 runs for the seventh wicket. The partnership ended when Hodge top edged a pull shot which was caught at midwicket. Devlin pushed on and Canowindra’s innings came to an end when he was caught behind whilst trying to score some quick runs. Nick Willson was left not out on 2 and Canowindra were all out for 77. With the ominous clouds in the near distance, Grenfell came out with aggression hoping to score the required 78 runs in quick time. Brendan Traves picked up one wicket before the rain made it too difficult to control the new ball and both captains agreed to temporarily abandon the match. The rain only worsened and not another ball was bowled. Next week the A graders have the bye, training will still be held at 5pm on Thursday as preparation starts for the match against Cavaliers in a fortnight.

Tasks included washing, grooming, leading, feeding and weighing him over many months. Lincoln Townsend from Year 11 Agriculture led Titan in the Junior Parade event and both he and the steer were awarded First place.
