Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

After a very intense and busy term 1 our students received their reports and in week 2 of term 2 we had parent teacher interviews. I would like to thank our parents for their participation in this very important event. However, I would like to recommend our parents to continue to discuss their sons’ academic and behavioural progress regularly with the teachers as education requires constant follow-up.

To follow up academic and behavior issues for your child, COOLSIS is the fastest and most practical way. We are desperate for you to utilize this system. Please contact the relevant year level coordinator to find out more about COOLSIS.

One of our priorities for this term was to make sure students attended their lessons on time. Students are to enter the classroom before the subject teacher in the morning and prior to each period. If students are late for 5 times they will receive an official warning, if they are late for 15 times, they will receive an after school detention by having 3 official warnings. We would like you to follow up your child’s lateness from COOLSIS again.

The InfoMatrix competition was held in Bucharest, Romania’s capital, in the first week of May. ISIK College Meadow Fair Campus qualified as finalists and we were invited to present our project under the short film category to represent ISIK College, and Australia. The entry received great feedback for their and was awarded a silver medal. Students received USD$300, a silver medal each, and brought back a representative plaque for our campus. I would like to extend sincere gratitude to Mr. Ilker Abak and the students ( Mesut Latifoglu- Taha Caksak ).

Our school wrestling team has done it again. In the championships in Perth, they have received 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals. I would like to congratulate Mr. Bunyamin Kazanci and our wrestling team for their success.

We watched with awe our students in the International Turkish Olympiads where the Australian finals were in Melbourne. I would like to extend my thanks to Mr. Tevfik Kerimoglu and our dedicated Turkish Language teachers for their effort. The ANZAC CORNER made by our Humanities Department has been launched with great success. I would like to extend my gratitude to Mr. Khalid Said, Mr. Wesley Hall and our Humanities department for decorating such a meaningful corner to our school.

We are half way through the school year and there is another semester (Term Three and Four) to get through this year. There is still time for improvement in order to pass the year with success.

I wish all our parents, students and staff a successful and healthy life.

Mr. Ilker TemizkanPrincipal

ENGLISHSome tips to help you improve your skills in English classes

1. Read a variety of novels. Fiction and non-fiction texts. Understand the main themes, ideas and characters. This will help you with reading comprehension tasks in class and expand your vocabulary.2. Read a variety of newspapers to identify and understand current issues. The Age, The Australian, The Herald Sun are the most common. By reading about current issues in the newspapers you will be able to form you own opinions on issues and become familiar with the persuasive techniques the authors use. This will help you focus on issues and language analysis when you study it in class.3. Write for fun. When you have a spare moment write a creative story and share it with friends, family or even your teachers. Some students have an exercise book that they write in. This will develop your writing skills and get your creative mind ticking.4. When a teacher returns a piece of work to you that they have corrected, read the comments that they have written. This will help you improve in the future.5. If you need assistance speak to your teachers. They are willing to help you and want to see you achieve your best.

Good luck for the rest of the year!

Plain English Speaking Award

The Plain English Speaking Award is a prestigious public speaking event conducted each year. A number of schools gather in certain regions to

discuss a variety of global issues facing people today. I am pleased to write that Isik College (Meadowfair Campus) was involved in the 2012 Plain English Speaking Award. The two students selected to attend were Halil and Muhammed Yelegin of year 11. The boys had to present a prepared speech and an impromptu speech. The students prepared speeches that were interesting and enjoyable to listen to. Halil spoke about the contentious issue of third world poverty and provided some insights on how to combat this problem. His speech was so moving and presented with such emotion that some audience members were in tears. Muhammed spoke about the impact of obesity on people and how this can lead to illness and death. His presentation was captivating and insightful. For the impromptu speeches both students were given the topic of ‘Off to a flying start’ which both boys explored imaginatively. Halil drew on his own personal experience and talked about personal achievement while Muhammed entertained the crowd with his extensive knowledge of Aussie Rules Football and how teams can lead and win with confidence.I was extremely proud of our students on the day as they spoke enthusiastically, effectively and with confidence. The boys also felt great about being involved as they received positive feedback from other speakers who attended on the day.Great effort and well done boys!Michael Kulkewycz

CBD TOURExcursion take two!The trip in overall was excellent. Everything went by the plans and we all had fun. Luckily there was no rain! The first place we visited was the Etihad Stadium. We learnt new facts and had lots of fun in the tribunal room, which was also used for the coaches’ speech after the game. There were speakers and many of us acted like a judge up on the huge chairs. Later on in the day we had our lunch in Fitzroy gardens and had a kick. What we

feared had come true. The ball was stuck amongst the large branches of a humongous tree. It needed a miracle to get it down. We tried with sticks, there were close attempts but we still were failing. Many of us had given up but then Davut’s crazy idea of using his shoe had got all of us laughing. Then on Kane’s 5th shot the ball was hit and was on its way down. We all celebrated frantically around him. He was the hero of the day. Later at the MCG our guide Geoff took us around. He worked

in the MCG for an amazingly long time, 25 years. He told us some of his fascinating stories that had taken place before we were even born. While going onto the field we all felt like AFL stars, up in the coaches box we acted like the coach screaming at our players and also like news reporters. After a tiring day of fun we were on our way back. Many of the feedback that I heard from my friends were all positive. We all had a great day and enjoyed ourselves.Taha Caksak 10C

The museum had very interesting artefacts. I liked the 3D room the most. It was also very interesting that the lava was like in a long sort of cave and how it erupts out of the volcano. I found the water bottle interesting as well. How uncomfortable would it be? Erdem Yilmaz Zirek 7C

What my experiences are that I felt sorry that they had to live in small houses and the appliances they had such as iron irons, wooden washing. I felt that how technology has evolved from that time. Life has changed.Toygar Ibrahim Kara 7C

In term 2, the Humanities department created a display to commemorate ANZAC Day. The display is located in the Meadow Fair foyer and it consists of two main features; a replica trench from the First World War and a seedling from the Lone Pine Tree from the battlefields at Gallipoli.

The purpose of the display is to remind our students, staff and guests about the tragedy and sacrifice of war. It also serves as a reminder to us all how such tragedy can be turned into lasting friendship, as is seen in the strong bond between Australia and Turkey today.

The Humanities department would like to thank Mr Ilker Temizkan for his generous support and also recognise the efforts of the Humanities staff in contributing to this worthwhile project in their own time. Humanities Department

The Humanities department congratulates Aaqib Suhale of 9C for being the best performed student at our school in the ASX Share market Game. The competition is a simulation game where students from all over the

country compete to maximise an initial hypothetical investment of $50,000. The game challenges students to learn about the stock market so that they can optimise their investment strategy.

ASX ShARE MARkET GAME

The game is based on real movements of selected companies trading on the share market. It was pleasing to see the great interest amongst our students with over 50 boys from years 9-12 participating. The competition offers many thousands of dollars in prize money to state and national winners.

Aaquib was very happy about beating the older students and demonstrated great respect for his competitors. His strategy of investing in petroleum companies and by looking at earnings and losses demonstrated the educational component of this game.

He enjoyed the pressure of the game and the challenge of establishing a maintaining his lead throughout the competition. Our winner was awarded a $100 voucher

which will be presented to him in front of his peers. Congratulations Aaquib. Mr Ezio Paciocco and Mr Khalid Said

PASTORAL

Year 9 Pastoral Care Camp SydneyOn the 4th of April, we went with our pastoral care group for a four-day camp to Sydney. In Sydney we have experienced lots of excitement trips and activities. We went to the Blue Mountains, which was very fascinating as the moment you look at it, it captures your eyes. Then, we did a tour around Sydney,

Wollongong and Woolloomooloo, visit the Botanical Gardens, Opera House and Harbour Bridge and had an amazing boat tour around the Coastal area of Sydney. At the same time, we enjoyed playing soccer during night, having BBQ and lots of reading time. We congratulate our winner of the reading competition Ahmet Arif Albayrak for his good

performance. This camp was especially a fun and enjoyable one, as we will treasure this moment as our ‘good times’. I would take this opportunity to thank our teachers Menderes Golcuk, Atilla Sinik, Okan Alkin and our mentors for organizing such a wonderful camp. Kaan Asik 9B

CARE

On Sunday 1st April, ten of our year 10 students hopped on a bus which

took them to their year 10 Camp at Dromana. Being week one of school holidays, everyone was excited on taking a break from studying. The students were accompanied with two teachers and two mentors which became a total of 14 all up. The house that was hired was nice and 1km away from the beach which of course made the view, beautiful. We had quite an adventure, we explored Dromana, went to the beach, played beach soccer, went cycling, had barbeques, and more. A great time was had by all and here is Kubilay Mulayim’s experience of the camp:At the Dromana camp I had a really good time, hanging out with

friends and participating in group activities. We spent time playing basketball and playing beach soccer, we even went cycling at a national park. The four days there allowed me to interact more closely, not only with my friends but also with my teachers and pastoral care mentors. My best memory of the camp was during the cycling, we came to a steep slope, and riding down was extremely fun. We had some funny moments and a really relaxing time.Just want to thank everyone who participated in this camp, we had a great time and I am sure you did as well.

Meadow Fair Wins AgainOn Saturday the 6th of May, years 7 and 8 soccer teams from Isik College campuses Keys borough, Sunshine and Shepparton played guest to Meadow fair campus from 11am to 4pm.

It was an exciting event with many teams having exceptional players playing in the new soccer field in Meadow fair Campus just built in 2011.

The soccer tournament was 20 minutes for one complete match. It was a half field area to play in which meant two teams play at the same time. After two matches played by each campus, there was a nice barbeque for lunch, there were sausages, chickens and all other meats.

After the barbeque the games were back on and Meadow fair campus 8D and 8B players won the golden trophy, while Sunshine Campus came in second in the finals with a silver trophy, the end result of the finals were 2-0.

This tournament which was organized by the Isik college pastoral care department was a really good opportunity for the students to be able to meet and interact with all other campuses. Everyone had enjoyed themselves and had fun. We would also be delighted if more tournaments like this take place in the future especially so we can visit other campuses of our school.HakanGocol&Salih Bol 8D

BIOLOGYVCE UNITS 1&2 BIO CAMP – YEAR 11 PERSPECTIVE

It was a crisp, cold morning in which all the VCE Units 1&2 Biology students had gathered at school. It was the day! Leaving home for three days to survive and study at Wilson’s Promontory. Not before long, we set off on our long drive to the national park. And can you believe that a trailer attached to one of our minivans came loose and luggage was falling out. Fortunately it was collected by the minivans that followed since we were travelling in a convoy. Anyway, we all arrived safe and sound at our designated location around 12:00 noon, aka our new home for three days. We swiftly claimed a bed/bunk for our own and the day progressed with two educational activities. These included observing and studying grassland ecosystems, and the other was studying the effects of bushfires on ecosystem; both activities were led by a ranger. I must say, it was a tiring first day for

all of us, so sleeping wasn’t an issue that night (neither the second night). Dawn fast approaching, we prepared ourselves for the second day of camp and set off to the first activity. This time, a new ranger greeted us and delivered a lecture on the floods and bushfires that hit Wilson’s Prom in its prior years. After some informative presentations about specific organisms in Wilson’s Prom, we learnt about endangered species and how external factors can affect their status. Later on we had a long break and most students decided to visit a nearby beach, and it was quite a sight for sore eyes (note that we were very exhausted at camp). Later, it was time to undertake inter-tidal studies along the coast at Wilson’s Prom. Students had worksheets, books, writing materials and were studiously examining the ecosystem there. Best of all, we did our prayers on the wet sand there, so it was a new

experience for our biology group. Back at the lodge, Mr.Tevfik Kerimoglu took charge in cooking BBQ, and the barbeque supplemented the day’s wonderful experience. Day three, our last activity was cancelled because it was raining, so it was “off we go back home”. And it was obvious that everyone was excited about going back home, back to their warm and cosy beds and home-cooked meals by their parents. But it must be said that everyone had a fantastic time at Wilson’s Prom, and we’d like to thank the teachers (Mr.Addo, Mr.Helou, Mr.Turkmen and Mr.Kerimoglu) for organizing, accompanying and supervising us for the duration of the camp which proved to be such a fruitful and memorable study camp. by Muhammed Yelegin & Bilal Sarikaya

CAMPVCE UNITS 1&2 BIO CAMP – YEAR 10 PERSPECTIVE

On the morning of the 19th of March 2012, the Year 10 and 11 Biology students slowly filed into any one of the four vans, very tired and sleepy. The next three hours saw student’s heads bouncing off the windows as they tried to catch a wink of sleep. This mood was consistent throughout the journey until we cast our eyes on the magnificent view of the beautiful landscape of mountains and beaches. This is when the cameras came out and the atmosphere of the whole van shifted. The students moved from window to window trying to get the best view. This excitement stayed with us till we got to the campsite, where we left the trailers and went to the first activity.

On our first activity we got to study the endangered grassland ecosystem and also looked at the different aspects of biology like the political and social issues. Then we went back to the campsite where we had the frustrating task of putting up a tent for the first time, but I would say we fared pretty well and most tents were up within an hour. That night we personally vowed to ourselves not to sleep with the threat of a wombat attack lurking upon us, but soon enough our vigil turned into one kept with closed eyes.

Setting up the camps required co-operation and sneaky looks over to the other tents.

By the second day we had gotten used to the surroundings of Wilsons Promontory. One popular place to spend free time was the beach and everyone was happy to know that the next activity was at the intertidal zone of another beach. Here we stayed even after we finished the activities and took pictures. We even prayed at the beach which was an illuminating experience. That night everyone opened their food stores and took out everything that was capable of being slapped on the barbeque. Tevfik hoca then cooked up an absolute feast which everyone enjoyed. Judging by Tevfik hoca’s cooking skills I am certain he enjoys a very happy family life.

Judging by Tevfik hoca’s cooking skills I am certain he enjoys a very happy family life.

The next morning we grudgingly packed up our possessions and loaded them into the trailers. We were supposed to be going back to the beach for a bit of fun but unfortunately it started raining. The gloomy weather perfectly reflected our moods as we made our way back towards our normal lives. I am very thankful to Mr. Emmanuel and Mr. Helou to introducing us to a whole new way of looking at biology; and also Velid Hoca’s amazing driving skills that pulled us through the scariest of bends; and Tevfik Hoca’s amazing culinary skills for making the camp experience all the more rewarding. year 8 and 9 Imax and Museum Excursion

On two Wednesdays, the 9th and 23rd of May, various year 8 and 9 students attended the

screening of “The Human Body” Imax show followed by a general viewing of the Melbourne Museum displays. The boys got to see, on the 3rd largest screen in the world, some amazing cinematography and microphotography of the inside workings of the human body. Most of these daily functions are taken for granted by us and hardly noticed and yet they miracles of creation.

Some of the amazing things we saw were the speeding impulse of a brain cell racing at 400 kilometers-per-hour… the quivering dance of hairs in our ear, so small that 10,000 bunched together are thinner than one strand of hair from our head… the

160 km trek of a red blood cell, only thousandths of an inch in size, through our vast, tangled network of veins, arteries and capillaries… and the miraculous genetic fusion of parental DNA that signals the beginning of a unique new life.

After the show the boys experienced such things as 3D interactive displays, authentic living and non-living biological specimens and geological samples. The Imax show was highly relevant to their current studies and the museum displays were useful as a prequel to their semester 2 topics. This excursion was also valuable to the boys because they gained knowledge useful for Science, Humanities and Physical Education studies. I have to congratulate them on their excellent conduct whilst they represented Isik College in public.

The InfoMatrix competition was held in Bucharest, Romania’s capital, in the first week of May. InfoMatrix is an international informatix competition comprising of six categories: Robot Sumo, Robot Line Following, Device Control, Programming, Computer Art, Computer Animations and Short Film. ISIK College Meadow Fair Campus qualified as finalists and we were invited to present our project under the short film category to represent ISIK College, and Australia.Thirty-nine countries participated with over 100 projects for the various categories and competition was fierce. The two students I went along with, Mesut Latifoglu and Taha Caksak, worked hard to prepare materials, exhibition stall display items, presentation notes and their on-screen presentation for the panel of 5 judges – in addition to the 3 months spent on the short film they planned, filmed, edited and published. In addition, it must be mentioned that some of Taha and Mesut’s peers were involved in the short film as cast members, not to mention Kane Gardner who was chiefly responsible for filming and famous for his cinematic angles. We especially appreciate the contribution of Mr. Michael Kulkewycz who devoted his time and talent for our production; I thank them all. The entry received great feedback for their and was awarded a silver medal. Students received USD$300, a silver medal each, and brought back a representative plaque for our campus.Students gained a lot, namely international exposure and the opportunity to meet students like themselves, the best in their field, in their locality. Strong friendships ensued and a whole other dimension of experience was gained, not easily attainable from non-experiential sources. It was overwhelming for them at first and they

conjured up much courage to remain determined and persistent. It was probably this determination and the memorable entry from Eastmeadows the previous year that saw ISIK College as a stand-out competitor. One judge commented that we’d set a high standard for the competition and it has been carried through well, and even sent his regards to Zuleyha Aykan, the Head of ICT, having participated

10AIt was nearing the end of the 2011, , I was in the library at the time when our supervisor (Mr. Ilker Abak) came in and informed

(where the competition was being held, also known as ISB), The Parliament of Romania and a couple of huge shopping centers. On day one of the competition we

arrived at the ISB we were greeted by people from many different countries such as Mexico, Turkey, Albania, Tanzania, Columbia just to name a few of the 38 countries. On this day we needed to setup our stand. We spent the whole styling up our stand with what we had. We put a lot of effort into and when we were finished I was proud for what we have created. We found out who is going to present to the judges in order. My heart sank when we realized we were forth out of twenty seven. The second day was the most important day for the whole trip, simply because it was presentation day. As we walked into the presentation room I tried to keep calm and remember my lines. There were 6 judges who we very optimistic and excited. But something happened; there was no computer in the presentation room to show our presentation, we had realized that the all of the contestants before us had laptops. It took about 10 minutes to set up a new computer in the room. Because of this I was a bit less confident. I said all of my lines correctly and before I knew it the presentation was done. Once I walked out I realized I was sweating. The rest of the day we spent staying at our stand attracting people. The third day wasn’t as critical but still important because we needed to stay at our stand and represent Australia and our school. No outstanding thing happened on this day.

unity presentationThe Game Training presentation taught me many things. Unity was a really simple program in which I could create little and simple but enjoyable game. Although I do not plan on working in the gaming industry it also taught me some basics in JavaScript codingI want to become and engineer and that way involve coding with JavaScript and other programming languages. Game developing will be a little side hobby of mine while working as an engineer. Overall, the presentation was an educational and a fun session in which everyone will be able to benefit from. No doubt anyone who attends this presentation will easily be able to make a small game. Mehmed Furgan 9A

Romania.Once I stepped out of the plane a wind of heat hit me I still thought in my head we were in Australia. We received a ride from one of the member of the Infomatrix comity and he took us to our hotel, The Rin Grand Hotel. It was very

classy inside, but when I looked out of the windows the landscape still reminded me of home. We had arrived a few days before the competition started so we had free time. In this time we went to the International School of Bucharest

us about an upcoming international competition called Infomatrix. We both agreed to compete in this competition. Originally we were going to enter the Computer Art category and we both started on the long holidays. However it was difficult to achieve that level at that time so we had to cancel the project. Instead when we returned to school we decided to do something simpler, a short film. We spent a few weeks brainstorming and thinking of ideas. We combined all of our ideas into a story. We created a storyboard and planned each day what we were going to do. We spent a while running around and gathering the props that we would need for our film. After this we immediately started filming. With Taha and I was the main actors and Kane Gardner as our cinematographer, we needed our “supplementary student actors”, so we rounded different types of students. The filming took about two to three weeks and between shootings I quickly edited and linked up the video footage so we can see the film altogether instead of in pieces. After the filming I spent an extra week or so finishing up the editing. We gave in our video and waited nervously. It was not until a week later when we received an email saying “Congratulations, your project is qualified to Infomatrix 2012 World Finals.” I simply could not believe my eyes; at first I thought it was a mistake. I told my parents they were as confused as I was. A few days later another email came in with my ticket information and such, I froze looking at my screen. I didn’t know what emotion I was feeling. I told my parents and they were proud to the brim. Ill skip to when I was at

our successful trip to Bucharest At the end of 2011 Mr. Abak approached Mesut and I, he asked us if we wanted to join the competition called Infomatrix. We went home, found out some information about the project and realised that this could be a once in a life time opportunity so we said yes. We decided to enter the category Computer Art by making a 3D animation. We were a quarter into the completion of our project but we thought that we would be much more successful if we done a short film. So before we started our project we decided on the duties that each of us had to do: I was accounted to be the director, script writer and the organiser, Mesut was going to put together the short film and add effects and Kane was going to be our cameraman. We spent many weeks to complete our project in Term 1. After the hard work it was time to submit our project to see if we can qualify. We thought that we had a very slight chance to make it in. Two weeks later on the 21st of March we received an email from Mr. Abak notifying us that our project was accepted. It took a few days to realise that we were actually going to go overseas to compete in a worldwide competition. Now it was time to prepare for Infomatrix. Some of these preparations included: Items to include in our stand; the stand that we had to prepare was to introduce to other people about our project and country, our passports, our luggage’s, our logo, our team jackets, forms and flight tickets. We thought that everything was done and we were going to have a lovely and relaxing time in Romania, but it turned out to be wrong... we were going there to compete which was where the hard part actually began. On the 29th of April, we all met up at Melbourne airport and said our final goodbyes to our families. Mr. Abak was going to be Mesut and I’s supervisor. After a very long, tiring and exciting trip we had finally touched the soil of Bucharest. Thankfully someone part of the Infomatrix group welcomed us. A lovely person named Talha. After we arrived at the hotel, we quickly settled

into our rooms and had a long and nice rest. At 7pm we met with Talha to eat dinner at Dristor Kebap’s. We had the opportunity to explore Bucharest before the competition started. We had come four days earlier just so we can have more time to rest and enjoy. We went to the Palace Of Parliament. It is the second largest administrative building in the world. We also went to Afi Palace; which was a huge shopping centre. We explored around our hotel, there were shopping centres and a circus. We were also lucky to see all around the International School of Bucharest. Finally the competition was beginning, our hotel was beginning to get crowded as every day went passed. On Thursday, we along with every other person in the competition needed to prepare their stands. Breakfast was given by the hotel and lunch and dinner was going to be served at the school. After long and tiring efforts, our stand started to slowly get into shape. We just had a couple of final touches and we decided we can finish it off the next day. At night there was an informative gathering and everyone found out their order to present their project to the judges. We were very unlucky because we were presenting 4th. After the presentation we went back to our hotel. Unfortunately we had a long night ahead of us. We needed to prepare our speech by organising cue cards, a PowerPoint presentation playing during our speech was also necessary and a kiosk slideshow that was going to keep repeating at our stand. The next day on Friday there was an opening ceremony. After that the Infomatrix competition had officially started. Everyone were going around seeing other projects and creating conversations about their countries and culture. On the other hand we had the stress of preparing for our presentation. It was our turn. We went into the room. Everything went according to plan except a few minor things. The feedback they gave was positive. They also gave some advices that we can use to improve our project. Everything important was over.

There was a soccer tournament. The friends that I made from Turkey and Turkmenistan included me in their soccer team. We couldn’t make it into the finals, but the main thing was that we enjoyed ourselves and shared the skills from all over the world. We also gathered at each other’s hotel rooms and had lots of fun. On Saturday night there was a performance night where some people showed us parts of their culture with dances and songs. Everyone picked which tour they wanted to go on. We chose the trip to Brasov (translyvania). We saw the Peles castle. This castle was where the first king of Romania lived. It was so awesome. The king collected weapons, which was what fascinated me a lot also the Ottoman room. Later we went to Dracula’s castle. We were all very excited to see what everyone was saying was spectacular. What they said was true. We saw the different things Dracula wore and the little scary doors, rooms and equipment he had. After that we ate at a restaurant next to a horse saddle. After dinner we watched a horse show. This was probably the most tiring day because we were on the go the whole time. After many days spent at the stands, it was time to learn our results. It was Monday, unfortunately our last day in Bucharest. Everyone was impatient to find out the results. Thankfully we got SILVER and won 300 American Dollars! We were very rapped about the decision. Before we left to go to the airport, we got each other’s contact details. When we arrived to Melbourne airport, we were greeted with flowers and hugs. Mr. Ilker Temizkan and Mr. Suleyman Kor also made their way out to congratulate us. We took many photos and went back to our homes. The whole trip was a wonderful experience. We enjoyed it a lot, saw new cultures, made new friends and saw the way of life in Romania. I would like to thank Mr. Michael Kulkewytz for starring in our short film and everyone who gave us this opportunity to go on this trip, especially Mr. Ilker Temizkan, Mr. Ilker Abak.Taha Caksak 10C

On Thursday the 19th of May, 7A, B and C went to the Art Gallery to learn about art movements starting from the middle ages and ending in the 20th century. The main focus was on European art as our art gallery has a great, publicly owned collection of artworks in this genre. We also had gallery experts give us speeches talking us through some of the meanings of the artworks. The artworks also gave us an insight into how the artists reacted to major historical events of the time. The first gallery we went to was the National Gallery of Victoria, International on St.Kilda Road.

Tactile! Water on glass. Lecturers explain the themes of Renaissance, Abstract, and Impressionist Art works. After our guided tours we had lunch in the park and made our way to the National Gallery at Federation Square to view more historical Artworks by famous Australian artists. Many of these paintings are in the students’ Art Detective textbooks. Seeing them live of course is, a very different, and much better experience.

On the 24th of May, our school’s wrestling team flew to Perth to participate in the Australian national wrestling championship. For this tournament our team prepared for 3 months to make sure we were trained enough to compete at a national level. In the last month of our preparation we trained very hard every single day after school and on

the weekends. At Perth we had very tough matches where we competed with wrestlers that had nearly 10 years of experience. Our boys did very well and many of our wrestlers had a chance to compete in the youth Olympics that will be held in Sydney in 2013.PE Department

CAREER

This term was a busy run of events organised by the Careers Department. Our guest speaker program hosted 3 different guests from 3 distinct industries: Science (esp. Geology), Education and Engineering.Representing the Science industry, Broadie Wales came out to speak about the Bachelor of Science course at Melbourne University. Students learned about the

requirements needed to get into the courses and the many range of areas they may specialise in within the course. Students also learned about the new ‘Melbourne model’ and the different pathways that the course provides including the various master degrees in Engineering, Medicine, Optometry, Dentistry to name a few.

One of our own, Dr. Emmanuel Opare-Addo, who previously was a geologist and now heads our school’s science department, presented an engaging presentation on what a geologist is and what their line of work involve. Given he was a geologist himself, he was able to reflect on his own personal experience which brought life to his presentation.

Coming out to speak about Education was the Associate Dean of Education at La Trobe University, Dr. Tanya Fitzgerald. She gave an enthralling presentation on the noble duty of educating people and the importance of this type of work for a moral and prosperous future. She also shared her experience in management and the art of

interacting with other people to resolve problems that may stifle any work place.Last but not least, an engineer, Gavin Chater, came out to our school courtesy of Engineers Australia to speak to our boys about the many types of engineering on offer for engineering students. Gavin is a project delivery leader and manager at GHD and was selected as Young Engineer of the Year in 2011. He was selected by Engineers Australia to come down and share his passion with students as he has a long list of achievements and experience under his belt. Most students were

quite enticed by his presentation as many of our boys seriously consider their chances at becoming engineers of the future.

All in all, it has been quite a fruitful term in terms of careers and we hope for bigger and better opportunities for students to engage in activities that prompt serious contemplation about their futures. Learning is ongoing!
