    INTERNATIONAL SOCIETy Of EXPERIMENTAL ARTISTS

EXPERIMENTAL = CONCEPT, ATTITUDE, TECHNIQUES + MATERIALS!Since 1991, ISEA has been promoting the creation and awareness of Experimental Art! Experimental Art means CONCEPT, ATTITUDE, TECHNIQUES, or MATERIALS -- and in any combination! We are a group of contemporary experimental artists known for our prestigious annual art exhibits -- held both in the US and internationally. We produce a top quality print Catalogue of our annual juried exhibit. We offer opportunities where artists may attend workshops, demonstrations and pre-sentations by leading artists and instructors in experimental art.

In 1991 Maxine Masterfield and Grace Hegeman founded ISEA. Maxine Masterfield is a nationally known artist, teacher and author. We take our mission from her message - The International Society of Experimental Artists has given us the opportunity to explore our creative powers. It is a society where members can come together and share ideas; where each of us can grow and change. As experimental artists, we must be willing to take risks. We should trust that what we have to express in our work is our life experience, as well as our own vision. It is this that makes our society so special. -- Maxine Masterfield 1999

Artists working in an experimental manner need a society where they can share ideas and tech-niques - both old and new and encourage the development of new talents and skills. There is a need to connect, encourage, inform and promote artists who create art by experimentation and explora-tion. We need new ways to make statements through our art and provide a forum to exhibit our work. -- Maxine Masterfield 2010

Our logo is a Nautilus Shell. It symbolizes growth, persistence, beauty and grace. Each year we select a new Nautilus for our Gracie award and our logo.

ISEA is inspiring to all artists and viewers. This exhibition shows the great imagination and creativity of the artists here. Their use of various mediums, many never to have been used before, shows us how the human mind can explore its depths and than present it to us in visible forms. Amazing. I have been honored to jury this exhibition and wish that space could have included all work submitted.

    Betty Lou Schlemm AWS, D.F.

MaryAnn Beckwith ISEA-NF, AWS, NWSExecutive DirectorEach year the annual exhibit reveals new achievements of the mem-bership of ISEA. I have never been disappointed with the exhibits entries. New explorations of the messages of life, new methods of applying pigments and new ways to interpret the imagery of our everyday life and world abound. I am always astounded with the fresh approaches. Multiple layers of images, objects of life juxtaposed against one another in combinations usually not seen in the daily reality of our lives and materials seldom seen together are joined in mysterious and wonderful ways. Enjoy this wonderful exhibit and prepare yourself for the great new visual realities it offers.

    The Inner Struggle

Kathleen Conover, ISEA-NF, AWS, NWSPresidentIt is an honor to be the President of the International Society of Experimental Artists, an organization that truly fosters creativ-ity. When exploring possibilities and pushing boundaries in con-cept, content, materials, processes and methods, ISEA applauds the search. Equally important is the venue to share, teach and learn from each other about our successes on national and international levels.

From its inception by Maxine Masterfield in 1991, ISEA has become a premier organization because of its board of officers and our mem-bership. The ISEA Dream Team of officers is a dynamite group of artists dedicated to the quality and success of this organization. I am in continued admiration of their skills and appreciation of their selfless generosity of time to the benefit of ISEA.

Our organization continues to strengthen because of the quality and exciting diversity exhibited each year by our membership. We continue to grow through regional representation and I encourage all artists interested in further involvement with ISEA to consider being a repre-sentative in your area (contact Helga Flower, Public Relations Director). We look forward to working with you!

  • 4Linda Baker, ISEA, AWS, NWS Vice President, InternationalAs Vice President of International Exhibitions for ISEA, I am excited to be coordinating as well as jurying the 2013 International Exchange with the country of Wales. I encourage all of you to enter and participate in this great international event.

Patti Sevensma, ISEA-NF, NCSIntake ChairpersonAs the Intake Chairperson for this years exhibit, I am amazed by the new work our artists are developing. This will be another exciting exhibit from the use of materials to the devel-opment of design. Next year lets add more 3D and maybe video. Thank you to all who entered. Congratulations to those chosen for this exhibit. Our juror, Betty Lou Schlemm, was a joy to work with. ISEA is definitely a cutting edge society. Thanks Maxine and Gracie for all your time and efforts in forming the International Society of Experimental Artists.

Helga Flower, ISEA-NFPublic Relations DirectorAs an ISEA Board Member in charge of promotion and public relations, I truly enjoy being part of the ISEA Family. Making more artists aware of our growing and unique organiza-tion is a priority in my art related activities. Feel free to contact me if you can help in any way to make ISEA shine even more!

    Your ISEA friendHelga Flower

Kathleen Mooney, ISEA-NF, NWSTreasurer, Technology ChairIt is my pleasure to be the Treasurer for ISEA and. ISEA Technology Chair. We have an online Membership Management system, online payment system and our own Facebook page. I congratulate the board and members of ISEA on another wonderful exhibition and art symposium.

  • Bea Pappas, ISEA-NFSite AcquisitionIn my experimental classes I stress the importance of the journey to my students. The trip to Gloucester was a real part of our journey. We experienced complete overload what with the near perfect weather, the quaint location, our wonderful exhibit, informative seminars, Isabellas class, juror, Betty Lou Schlemms sensational review of our art and last, but not least, lobsta, lobsta, lobsta. Seeing old friends is always a bonus and being together is a joy. Yes, it was a terrific time!

In 2013, October, the joy will continue on Sanibel Island, Florida. I am so blessed to live here and my aim is to have you experi-ence our little Paradise. Sanibel is known as the shell capital of the world. It boasts the only shell museum in the world. 2/3rds of our land is sanctuary with great photo opportunities. You may bike (bike paths cover the Island), swim (pool or ocean), shell on the beach or kayak our conservation byways through J.R.Ding Darling Refuge. Workshops are planned along with interesting site-seeing trips. We hope to meet more of you at this event.

Merle O. Plagge, M.D., ISEAMember ServicesAs Director of Member Services, I assist artist members in the technical computer aspect of entry in juried shows, main-tenance of their membership through our online database and answer general questions that members may have or have posted through the website.

Isabella Pizzano, ISEASponsor Relationship DirectorAs Director of Sponsor Relations and Donations I try to identify potential sponsors and establish a contact. These monies and material are used toward the awards which are given each year at the annual exhibit and symposium. Thank you to all who gave generously this year. Please contact me if you have any ideas or would like to help me in any way.

Marylu Dykstra, ISEAStrategic PlanningFor the 2011-2012 year, it has been my privilege to continue serving on the Board of Directors as Board Secretary. Addi-tionally, the work accomplished this year includes: supporting the logistics and planning for our 2012 symposium, developing the prospectus, writing and designing the symposium guide, preparing sponsorship letters, working with the North Shore Arts Association staff on details specific to the exhibition and symposium, supporting the management of the exhibition and symposium with the hanging of the show, and on-site manage-ment support. Additional work is in progress for planning for ISEA 2013 and 2014, international planning as needed and key messaging development for post-show media communications.
