    THE SERIES - - This is the 73rd meeng between the two schoolsin football. Iowa leads the all-me series by a 46-23-3 margin.Northwestern has won the last three and five of the last six in theseries. The Wildcats won last years game (21-17), at Evanston.The Wildcats have won the last three meengs in Iowa City. Iowaslast win in the series came in 2007 (28-17) at Evanston.     COACHING RECORDS - - Kirk Ferentz is in his 16th year as a col-lege head coach and his 13th year as Iowas head coach. His careerrecord is 104-83 and he is 92-62 at Iowa. He is 4-6 vs Northwestern.

    IOWA HOSTS NORTHWESTERNIowa (3-2, 0-1) is home for the first of two straight games in Kinnick Stadium

    hosting Northwestern (2-3, 0-2) in its only night game of the season. Game time

    is 6:01 p.m. in Kinnick Stadium (70,585). The game is sold out. The Hawkeyehave defeated Tennessee Tech (34-7), Pittsburgh (31-27) and Louisiana-Monroe(45-17), all in Kinnick Stadium. Iowa was defeated, 44-41 in three overtimes, aIowa State and last week dropped a 13-3 decision at Penn State.

    Northwestern has recorded wins over Boston College (24-14) and Eastern Illinois(42-21), while dropping decisions to Army (21-14), Illinois (38-35) and Michigan(42-24).

    BLACK AND GOLD SPIRIT NIGHT, CARD STUNTSaturdays game against Northwestern is the UIs annual Black and Gold Spiri

    Game. To stripe Kinnick Stadium, fans in even sections are asked to wear goldand fans in odd sections of the stadium are asked to wear black. UI students areencouraged to wear black. These instructions are the same used for last yearsSpirit Game against Penn State.

    The UI is also working with the Iowa Farm Bureau to stage ANF Day at Kin-nick. Included among the activities for this salute to Americas farmers is a cardstunt involving all 70,000 fans in attendance. Two card stunts are scheduled, oneduring the national anthem and another immediately afterward. The UI is askingfans to arrive early at their seats in time to participate in the event.

    ON THE TUBEBTN (HD) will televise the contest to a national cable audience. Eric Collins

    Chris Martin and Dionne Miller will call the action.

    RADIO BROADCASTIowa games are broadcast on the Hawkeye Radio Network. Gary Dolphin handles

    the play-by-play, with color commentator Ed Podolak and sideline reporter Rob

    Brooks. The Hawkeye Radio Network includes more than 40 stations throughouthe state.

    The game can also be heard on Sirius channel 93.

    BIG TEN TOUR ON IOWA CAMPUSThe Big TensHonoring Legends. Building Leaders. Mobile Tour will visit the

    12 conference campuses in 12 weeks, leading up to the Big Ten Football Cham-pionship Game on Dec. 3 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The Mobile Tourwill visit Iowa City Thursday through Saturday this week as the Hawkeyes hostNorthwestern. The Stagg-Paterno Championship trophy is a featured element othe mobile tour.

    The purpose of the tour is to entertain and educate fans about the new era of BigTen football - - two divisions, the championship weekend in Indianapolis, 18 newtrophies and the path to the Rose Bowl or BCS National Championship GameFans will have the opportunity to see and have their pictures taken with the trophy

    The Mobile Tour will be located in the Krause Family Plaza Saturday. The plazaopens at noon.

    OPENING CONFERENCE PLAYIowa has opened Big Ten conference play on the road in 10 of 13 seasons under

    IOWA UNDER THE LIGHTSIowas only night game of the season is Saturday when the Hawkeyes host

    Northwestern.Iowa was 2-1 in night games a year ago, winning at home against Penn State

    (24-3) and defeating Missouri (27-24) in the Insight Bowl, while losing at Arizona(34-27). Iowa is 8-1 in night games over the last four seasons.

    Northwestern at Iowa - - Kinnick Stadium Date of Release: Oct. 10, 2011

    HAWKEYE EXPRESS STARTS EARLYDue to the late start for the Northwestern game (Oct. 15), the Hawkeye Express

    which transports fans attending Iowa home games from the west edge of Coralvilleto Kinnick Stadium, will begin operations four hours prior to kickoff (2 p.m.). Thetrain runs for 90 minutes following games.

    The Hawkeye Express recorded an all-time high for the Tennessee Tech at Iowagame to open the season. A total of 5,240 fans rode the train, surpassing the previous high of 4,931 riders for the Ball State at Iowa game last season.

    The Hawkeye Express is operated by the Iowa Northern Railroad Company.

    MENS BASKETBALL OPEN PRACTICECoach Fran McCafferys mens basketball team will hold an open practice Sat-

    urday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes will work out from 1-4 p.m. andfans are welcome to attend.

    The Hawkeyes open the season with an exhibition contest on Sunday, Nov. 6and begin the regular season by hosting Chicago State Friday, Nov. 11 (7 p.m.).

    HAWKEYES EARN WEEKLY HONORSSeveral Iowa players have earned weekly honors this season: Junior DB Micah Hyde earned honorable mention honors from the College

    Football Performance Award for his play at Penn State. Hyde had his third

    interception of the season in the second half, stopping a PSU drive inside theIowa red zone. Hyde was also credited with eight tackles, including one tacklefor loss, and two pass break-ups.

    Senior DL Tom Nardo was named Big Ten Conference defensive Player of theWeek for his play in Iowas 45-17 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 24. TheBig Ten honor is the first for Nardo. Nardo recorded a career-high 12 tackles(six solo, six assists), including two tackles for loss and a shared QB sack.

    Junior QB James Vandenberg earned honorable mention honors from the CollegeFootball Performance Awards for his play vs. Louisiana-Monroe. Vandenbergcompleted 21-32 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns in Iowas 45-17win. His scoring strikes covered 13, 17 and 23 yards and he scored on a oneyard run.

    Senior P Eric Guthrie received honorable mention honors from the CollegeFootball Performance Awards for his play vs. Louisiana-Monroe. Guthrie aver

    aged 48 yards on his two punts vs. ULM. He has at least one punt of 50 yardor more in three straight games.

    QB James Vandenberg was named Big Ten Conference offensive Player of theWeek for his play in leading Iowa to a 31-27 win over Pittsburgh. The BigTen honor is the first for Vandenberg. He led Iowas second half rally againstPittsburgh, rushing for one touchdown and throwing three touchdown passes inthe final 17 minutes. His totals against Pitt included 31-48 passes for 399 yardsand three touchdowns, with one interception.

    QB James Vandenberg was one of eight quarterbacks named by the ManningAward as its Stars of the Week following Iowas win over Pittsburgh. Theaward was established by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004. Vandenberg has alsobeen nominated for the Quarterback Performance of the Year honor, which isalso based on fan voting.

    NORTHWESTERN COACH PAT FITZGERALDPat Fitzgerald is in his sixth season as a collegiate head

    coach, all at Northwestern. His record stands at 36-32 (.529)The Wildcats have been bowl eligible the last four seasonsand five of the last six.

    Fitzgerald, who was a two-time first team all-Americanlinebacker with the Wildcats (1995-96), began his coachingcareer as a defensive graduate assistant at Maryland (1998)and Colorado (1999). In 2000, Fitzgerald coached linebackersand special teams at Idaho before returning to his alma materin 2001. The native of Orland Park, Ill. coached the Wildcadefensive backs in 2001 before coaching the linebackers fouryears (2002-05). Fitzgerald won the Bronco Nagurski andChuck Bednarik awards, as the nations top defensive playerand was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, in 1995and 1996. He became the first two-time winner of both theNagurski and Bednarik awards.

    Fitzgerald earned his first career Big Ten victory againsIowa (21-7) on Nov. 4, 2006 in Iowa City.

    COACHING CONNECTIONS

    Iowa and Northwestern split four meetings during PaFitzgeralds playing career. Fitzgerald earned all-Americanhonors as a junior and senior in 1995 and 1996.

    Mike Hankwith, Northwesterns defensive coordinatorwas on the coaching staff at Arizona when the Wildcatsdefeated Iowa 23-20 in 1973. He has also coached aMichigan, Purdue and Wisconsin within the Big Ten.

    Marty Long, Northwesterns defensive line coach, was onthe coaching staff at Arizona when Iowa met the Wildcatsin both 1996 and 1998, splitting the two meetings.

    Iowa and Northwestern are among national leaders in few-est penalties and yards. Iowa isfifth in fewest penalty yards(32.0) and 13th in fewest penalties (4.2). Northwestern i26th in fewest penalties and 34th in fewest yards.

    Northwestern ranks eighth in the nation in punt returndefense (1.5), while Iowa is 37th (5.2). The Wildcats alsorank sixth nationally in punt returns (18.0), while Iowa isseventh in net punting (42.4).

    Northwestern is tied for fifth in the nation with just fourturnovers, while Iowa is tied for 21st with seven. Threeof Iowas seven turnovers came in the fourth quarter of themost recent loss at Penn State, while two of Northwesternsfour turnovers came in the second half of its most recentloss to Michigan.

    Kirk Ferentz (pronounced FAIR-rintz,rhymes with parents) is in his 13thseason as head football coach at theUniversity of Iowa. His latest contract

    extension runs through the 2020 season.Ferentz was named the 2009 Dave Mc-

    Clain Big Ten Conference Coach of theYear. He was one of 15 semi-finalistsfor the 2009 George Munger Award, pre-sented by the Maxwell Football Club tothe College Coach of the Year. He wasthe 2009 AFCA Region Three Coach of the Year and one of10 finalists for the Liberty Mutual national Coach of the Year.

    Ferentz was honored as the 2002 Associated Press and WalterCamp National Coach of the Year and was the AFCA RegionalCoach of the Year in 2002 as well. He was named Big TenConference Coach of the Year in 2002, 2004 and 2009. Ferentz

    guided Iowa to Big Ten titles in 2002 and 2004.Iowa has made two BCS bowl appearances, including a 24-

    14 win in the 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl. Iowa has played insix January bowl games and has four January bowl victories(2004 Outback Bowl, 2005 Capital One Bowl, 2009 OutbackBowl and 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl). Iowa has posted an88-43 (.672) overall mark and a 50-31 (.617) Big Ten recordthe last 10-plus seasons. Ferentz has guided Iowa to ninefirstdivision finishes, including a second-place finish in 2009.Iowa was bowl eligible in 2010 for the 10th straight season.

    The Hawkeyes are 6-3 in bowl games under Ferentz. His sixbowl wins tie as third most among all-time Big Ten coachesand he has led Iowa to three straight bowl victories.

    At Iowa, Ferentz holds an overall record of 92-62 (.597) anda 53-44 (.546) mark in Big Ten games. In his 16th season as acollege head coach, he holds a career mark of 104-83 (.556).

    Fifty-nine of Iowas 154 games under Ferentz have beendecided by seven points or less (27-32) and 46 were playedagainst opponents who were ranked in the top 25 at the time(20-26).

    Ferentz joined the Iowa staff after serving as assistant headcoach and offensive line coach of the NFLs Baltimore Ravens.He was part of the Baltimore (Cleveland Browns prior to themove) staff for six years.

    Ferentz was named head coach of the Maine Bears in 1990and held that position for three years. Ferentz was a memberof Hayden Frys Iowa staff for nine years as offensive linecoach (1981-89). He coordinated Iowas running game duringhis first coaching stint at Iowa. Iowa appeared in eight bowlgames while Ferentz was an Iowa assistant.

    Ferentz was born in Royal Oak, Mich., and attended highschool in Pittsburgh, Pa. He earned his bachelors degree inEnglish Education from Connecticut in 1978, where he wasa football captain. Kirk received the Distinguished AlumnusAward from the Neag School of Education at the Universityof Connecticut in May, 2009. He was inducted into the Up-per St. Clair High School Hall of Fame in September, 2002and the Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall ofFame in May, 2003.

    THE SERIESIowa holds a 46-23-3 advantage in the series that began with a 12-6 Iowa vic-

    tory in 1897. Northwestern has won the last three games and five of the last sixincluding a 21-17 decision a year ago in Evanston. In addition, Northwestern holdsa three-game winning streak in Kinnick Stadium.

    The Hawkeyes snapped a two-game losing streak to the Wildcats with a 28-17triumph in 2007, but the Wildcats have won the last three meetings by a combined16 points. The visiting team has won four of the last five meetings.

    NORTHWESTERN RALLIED A YEAR AGONorthwestern used two long scoring drives in the fourth quarter to rally to a

    21-17 win over Iowa in Evanston on Nov. 13, 2010. The Hawkeyes had the balin Wildcat territory in the final minute, reaching the 39-yard line before a fourthdown pass to the end zone was knocked away.

    Trailing 7-3 at halftime, Iowa took control inthe third period, driving 75 yards for a touch-down in seven plays. Iowa took the lead on afive-yard pass from QB Ricky Stanzi to WRMarvin McNutt, Jr.

    The Hawkeyes increased the advantage ontheir next possession as Stanzi connected withWR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos for a 70-yardscore to give Iowa a 17-7 advantage throughthree quarters.

    The teams exchanged interceptions early in thefourth period, with Northwestern taking over atits own 15 with 10:56 remaining following Iowas only turnover. The Wildcatdrove 85 yards in 13 plays to cut the deficit to 17-14 with 6:21 to play. Iowa pickedup a first down on its next possession, but was forced to punt with 4:08 remaining

    The Wildcats drove 91 yards in 11 plays for the winning score, a 20-yard pass

    from QB Dan Persa to WR Demetrius Fields with 1:22 left in the game. Iowmoved 41 yards before turning the ball over on downs in the final seconds.

    Northwestern scored a touchdown on its first drive of the game and held the Iowoffense in check throughout most of the first half. Iowa drove 55 yards on its finapossession of the second quarter, getting on the scoreboard with a 32-yard fieldgoal by PK Mike Meyer in the final minute of the half.

    Stanzi led the Iowa offense by completing 23-41 passes for 270 yards and twotouchdowns, with one interception. RB Adam Robinson returned to action to rushfor 108 yards on 22 carries. McNutt, Jr. had seven receptions for 72 yards andJohnson-Koulianos had 104 yards on five receptions.

    Freshman LB James Morris led Iowas defense with 13 tackles. DB Micah Hydadded 12 tackles and OLB Jeff Tarpinian had eight stops. P Ryan Donahue averaged 42.9 yards on seven punts, including a long of 73 yards.

    Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk SeriesThe Cy-Hawk Series is in its eighth season in 2011-12, being sponsored for the first time by Iowa Corn.Iowa State leads the 2011-12 series, 5-2, with winsin volleyball and football. Iowa won the womenssoccer game, 4-1.

    Iowa leads the overall series 4-3 in the in-state com-petition against Iowa State that began in 2004-05.Iowa captured the Cy-Hawk Series a year ago by a15-11 margin.

    Last season, Iowa captured victories in football,womens soccer, wrestling, womens basketball,womens swimming and diving and softball. ISUrecorded wins in volleyball, mens and womenscross country and mens basketball. The womensgymnastics teams split.

    Iowa captured the inaugural Cy-Hawk Series (13-8)in 2004-05 and won again in 2006-07 (13-8), 2008-09 (21-4) and 2010-11 (15-11). Iowa State won thecompetition in 2005-06 (13-8) and 2007-08 (18-9)and 2009-10 (16-11).

    The 12-event series awards two points (except foot-ball, which is worth three) to the winning school ineach head-to-head match-up between the two insti-tutions. Additionally, two points are awarded to aninstitution if the graduation rate of its student-athletesis greater than the national average as reported eachfall by the NCAA.

    A commemorative Cy-Hawk Series Cup, which stands31 inches tall and weighs 19 pounds, is displayed onthe winning teams campus for an entire year after avictory. Replica cups are also presented as travelingtrophies for individual victorious teams in the head-to-head competition.

    Iowa moved across midfield after collecting the only PSU turnover of the gamebut a QB sack by Penn State resulted in a Hawkeye fumble and the home teamtook over at the Iowa 49-yard line. Penn State drove for the only touchdown othe game from there, scoring on a two-yard pass on third down.

    Iowas next two possessions ended withPSU pass interceptions, the second coming ona tipped pass with just 3:42 remaining. TheNittany Lions held Iowa on downs on its lastpossession and ran out the clock to earn the win.The Hawkeye offense was held to just 114 yardstotal offense in the second half.

    LB James Morris led the Iowa defense with13 tackles and LB Christian Kirksey recorded10 stops and a forced fumble. DL Mike Danielsrecorded eight tackles, including a tackle forloss. Hyde added eight tackles and two passbreak-ups to go with his interception and DBJordan Bernstine added eight tackles and one pass break-up.

    DEFENSIVE CHANGES FROM PENN STATEThere were two plays during the first half of Iowas contest at Penn State in which

    a shared tackle was recorded for the wrong Iowa player (tackles were credited to

    Marcus Coker and Don Shumpert). Due to the errors, LB James Morris has beencredited with an additional assisted tackle, giving him 13 total tackles, whichequals his career high.

    Additionally, DL Tom Nardo was given credit for two additional assisted tacklesincluding a shared tackle for loss. Nardo is now credited with six tackles againsthe Nittany Lions.

    EXTRA POINTS VS. PENN STATE Despite allowing 395 yards total offense in the loss at Penn State, the Iowa

    Junior CB Micah Hyde came up with his third interception of the season in thethird period, stopping a Penn State red zone opportunity. His first two thefts ofthe season both came in Iowas win over Pittsburgh. Hyde now has seven careerinterceptions. Hyde added eight total tackles, one tackle for loss and two passbreak-ups at Penn State.

    Sophomore LB James Morris led Iowa with 13 tackles (5 solo, 8 assists), whileChristian Kirksey added 10 (6 solo, 4 assists) and a forced fumble.

    TEN IS BIGGEST LOSSIowas 13-3 loss at Penn State marks the first Iowa loss by more than nine points

    in 48 games, dating back to a 31-6 loss at Purdue on Oct. 20, 2007. Iowa had no

    lost a game by more than a touchdown in 43 games, dating back to a 28-19 lossto Western Michigan on Nov. 17, 2007. Both streaks ranked as the longest in thenation. In the loss at Penn State, Iowa failed to score a touchdown for thefirst timesince that 2007 loss at Purdue.

    MICHIGAN RALLIES AT NORTHWESTERNMichigan outscored Northwestern 28-0 in the second half in taking a 42-24 vic-

    tory last Saturday night in Evanston. The Wildcats took advantage of three passinterceptions to build a 24-14 halftime advantage, including a 20-yard field goaon the final play of the half. Michigan QB Denard Robinson led the Michiganoffense in the second half, concluding the game with 338 passing yards and 113rushing yards. The Wolverines scored touchdowns on their first three possessionsof the second half to take control.

    Northwestern QB Dan Persa completed 32-44 passes for 331 yards. WR Jeremy

    Ebert led the Wildcats with 11 receptions for 86 yards. Northwestern was heldto just 107 net rushing yards and two of the Wildcats first three possession of thesecond half ended with turnovers.

    Jordan Mabin led the Northwestern defense with 12 tackles, while David Nwabuisadded 11 and Bryce McNaul had 10. Ibraheim Campbell had two interceptionsand nine tackles.

    IOWA COMEBACKSIowas rally for a 31-27 win over Pittsburgh (Sept. 17) is believed to be the larg

    est comeback for a win in Hawkeye history, as the Hawkeyes trailed by 21 points(24-3) with 3:11 remaining in the third quarter. Following is a list of previous Iowarallies that are believed to be the largest in school history:

    Iowa rallied from an 18-point deficit in a 34-31 win over Oregon in 1949 inIowa City. Iowa trailed 24-6 with 2:30 left in the third quarter against the Ducks Iowa rallied from a 17-0 first half deficit for a 30-27 win at Minnesota in 1986

    winning on a 37-yard field goal with one second remaining. Iowa rallied from a 17-0 first half deficit for a 37-30 home win over Michigan

    State in 1996. Iowa rallied to tie the game at 23 and 30 before scoring the winning touchdown early in the fourth period.

    Iowa rallied from a 14-point deficit for a 42-24 win over Indiana in 2009 at Kin-nick Stadium. The Hawkeyes trailed 21-7 in the third period when an 86-yardinterception return sparked Iowas rally.

    Iowas rally ties as the second largest this season among FBS teams. Houstonrallied from a 27-point deficit to take a win over Louisiana Tech, while Nebraskarallied from 21 points down to defeat Ohio State last weekend.

    KIRKSEY STEADY ON DEFENSESophomore LB Christian Kirksey has recorded 49 tackles

    (30 solo) in five games. Kirksey ranks second in the Big Tenin tackles and is tied for 12th nationally in solo tackles. Healso has two tackles for loss, one QB sack, a pass break-up,two caused fumbles and one fumble recovery. He led theHawkeyes with 11 solo tackles and two assists at Iowa State,while also causing and recovering an Iowa State fumble onthe same play. He recorded 10 tackles (six solo stops) againstTennessee Tech and Penn State and had eight stops in the winover Pittsburgh. He added his second forced fumble of theseason at Penn State.

    TOP HAWKEYE PERFORMERS Senior Eric Guthrie has taken over the punting duties in

    2011 and is averaging 43.7 yards on 19 punts. Guthriehas eight punts inside the 20, with no touchbacks, andopponents have averaged just 5.2 yards on five returns.He had a career-long 59-yard punt at Iowa State, wherehe averaged 46.8 yards on four punts. He had at least onepunt of 50 yards or more in three straight games before

    having two punts of 49 yards at Penn State. Senior DL Mike Daniels has collected 26 tackles, includingfour tackles for loss and 2.5 QB sacks. He also has twoQB pressures.

    Senior DL Tom Nardo had a career-high 12 tackles inIowas win over ULM, earning Big Ten defensive Playerof the Week honors. Nardo has started the last three gamesat tackle and in five games has 30 tackles, including 3.5tackles for loss, a pass break-up and a caused fumble.

    Junior WR Keenan Davis recorded career bests in catchesand yards in Iowas win over Pittsburgh. He led Iowa re-ceivers with 10 receptions for 129 yards and a touchdownagainst Pittsburgh. He collected five receptions for 95yards and a touchdown at Iowa State, including a 23-yard

    scoring catch in the second overtime period. He had a23-yard scoring reception in the most recent win overULM. Davis has 22 receptions for 312 yards and threetouchdowns in five games as a starter and he is averaging20.7 yards on three KO returns. Davis was recently addedto the Watch List for the Biletnikoff Award.

    Senior DB Jordan Bernstine has played well in four games,while missing the Iowa State game due to illness. Bern-stine started for the first time in his career in the win overPittsburgh, recording five solo stops, two tackles for lossand a QB sack among his eight tackles. He added twotackles in the win over ULM and had eight tackles anda pass break-up at Penn State. He is also averaging 22.4yards on 10 KO returns.

    Redshirt freshman WR Kevonte Martin-Manley has threetouchdown receptions. He had scoring catches of 25 and22 yards in the win over Pittsburgh, scoring Iowas lasttwo touchdowns in the fourth quarter rally. He also had atouchdown at Iowa State. He added six receptions for 82yards in the win over ULM and had three receptions for21 yards at Penn State. For the season has 17 receptionsfor 202 yards.

    COLLECTING INTERCEPTIONSIowas defense has ranked among national leaders in causing

    turnovers in recent seasons. Over the last three-plus seasonsIowa has collected 68 interceptions, a total that ranks secondin the nation over that span (Florida, 71).

    The Hawkeyes have had an interception return for a touchdownin each of the last four years, including four last season. Iowahas had an interception return for a score in nine of the last 11seasons and 9-13 seasons under Kirk Ferentz. Iowa had six non-offensive touchdowns in 2010 and had an 89-yard interceptionreturn for a touchdown in the opening win this season.

    IOWAN CALLING THE SIGNALSJunior QB James Vandenberg started at quarterback in

    Iowas first four games. Vandenberg is a native of Keokukand the first native Iowan to open the season as Iowas start-ing quarterback since 2001. The most recent Iowa native tohold that position was Kyle McCann of Creston. McCannled Iowa to victory in the 2001 Alamo Bowl, the first bowwin for Coach Kirk Ferentz.

    Two native Iowans have led the Hawkeyes to Rose Bowwins, including Kenny Ploen (Clinton) during the 1956 seasonand Randy Duncan (Des Moines) during the 1958 seasonBoth were first team All-Americans.

    Sophomore LB Shane DiBona, true freshman RB MikailMcCall and sophomore LB Dakota Getz will miss the re-mainder of the 2011 season.

    DiBona suffered an achilles injury during preseason prac-tice. He underwent successful surgery at the UI Hospitalsand Clinics following the injury and is expected to make afull recovery.

    After a redshirt season in 2009, the Duxbury, Mass. nativesaw action in all 13 games a year ago, with two starts. Herecorded six solo tackles and seven assists.

    McCall suffered a broken bone in his right leg in Iowasopening win over Tennessee Tech. He had rushed for 61 yardson nine carries before suffering the injury.

    Getz, who missed Iowas opening win due to injury, suffereda major knee injury on the opening kick of the Iowa Stategame and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

    NEW PREP FOR COACHING STAFFAlong with the addition of Nebraska to the schedule, Iowa

    FERENTZ JOINS CHALLENGEIowa Coach Kirk Ferentz and Iowa State Coach Paul Rhoads

    have joined forces with the Iowa Mentoring Partnership forthe 2011 Coaches Challenge. The Coaches Challenge runsfrom Aug. 1-Nov. 21 and is a competition between IowaNebraska and Kansas to see which state can recruit the mosmentors.

    For three years, Kansas and Nebraska have competed in aCoaches Mentoring Challenge, with Bo Pelini (Nebraksa)Bill Snyder (Kansas State) and Turner Gill (Kansas) takingpart in the competition. Ferentz and Rhoads have joined thecompetition this season.

    According to The National Mentoring Partnership, thereare 15 million children in the nation in need of caring andquality mentors. In Iowa, it is estimated that nearly 5,000young people are currently in need of a mentor. Many ofthese children and youth are young men who would stronglybenefit from a positive male role model. The Iowa MentoringPartnership, an initiative of the Iowa Commission on Volun-teer Service, upholds the commissions mission to improvelives, strengthen communities and foster civic engagemen

    through service and volunteering by supporting qualitymentoring services and by working to close the mentoringgap in our state.

    The Iowa Mentoring Partnership currently supports a network of more than 80 local, certified mentoring programs.

    Any new mentor application received between Aug. 1-Nov21 will count towards the score of the respective state, withcumulative totals updated each month.

    GLANCE AT THE SCHEDULEIowa played three of its first four games in Kinnick Stadium

    closing the non-conference schedule Sept. 24 by defeatingLouisiana-Monroe. Iowa is one of two Big Ten Conferenceteams (Ohio State) to play two non-conference games againstteams from BCS conferences.

    The Hawkeyes opened Big Ten play at Penn State, mark-ing the 10th time in Kirk Ferentz 13 years at Iowa that theHawkeyes have opened the conference season on the roadIowa returns home to host Northwestern (6:07 p.m., BTN HD)and Indiana (11 a.m., TBA) the next two weekends before aroad game at Minnesota. The second half of the conferenceslate has Iowa hosting Michigan and Michigan State beforetraveling to Purdue and Nebraska. Six of Iowas 2011 op-ponents competed in bowl games last season.

    The Hawkeyes do not face Big Ten opponents Illinois, OhioState and Wisconsin in 2011 and 2012.

    TICKET UPDATEIowa has sold all tickets for its seven home games. Iowa has

    issued over 59,000 season tickets, which includes more than10,000 student tickets. The Iowa record for average homeattendance is 70,585, set in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010. Iowahas sold out Kinnick Stadium 52 of the last 54 games. Inaddition, Iowa has sold its allotment of tickets to remainingroad games at Penn State, Minnesota and Nebraska.

    HAWKEYES RANK HIGH IN GRADUATION RATESThe Iowa Hawkeyes ranked among the nations leaders in academic

    success for the 70 college football teams that competed in bowl gamesfollowing the 2010 season.

    Iowas 79% ranked 12th in Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for itsfootball student-athletes, according to data collected by the NCAA,among the 70 college football teams that participated in the 35 col-lege football bowl games.

    Iowas GSR of 79%, released in October, 2010, ranked third amongteams ranked in the BCS top 25 at the time and is 12 percentage pointshigher than the national average.

    In 2009, Iowas GSR of 74% ranked second among the 10 teamsthat competed in 2010 BCS bowl games.

    The graduation rate for Iowas 2009 nationally ranked football pro-gram was 67 percent for the second consecutive year. The nationalaverage was 55 percent.

    Iowas graduation rate ranked third among teams that appeared inthe 2008 final top 25 rankings.

    THREE HAWKEYES EARN ACADEMIC HONORSIn 2008 and again in 2010, three Iowa players were named to the

    ESPN/CoSIDA District Seven first all-academic team.Under Kirk Ferentz in the last 12 years, 17 Hawkeye players have

    combined to earn academic all-America honors on 32 occasions.Five players, DL Aaron Kampman, OL Andy Lightfoot, LB MikeKlinkenborg, DB Adam Shada and OL Julian Vandervelde, werethree-time honorees.

    In Big Ten play, Iowas eight opponents posted an overalrecord of 62-34 during the regular season. Iowa did not playIllinois and Purdue.

    IOWA VS. BOWL TEAMSEight of Iowas 13 opponents in 2010 earned bowl invita-

    tions. Iowas 13 opponents posted a 92-71 (.564) overalrecord. Wisconsin (Rose) and Ohio State (Sugar) earned BCSbowl bids, while Arizona, Michigan State, Penn State, Michi-gan, Northwestern and Missouri played in the post-season.

    HAWKEYE NOTES FROM 2010 Iowa ranked seventh nationally in scoring defense (17.0)

    sixth in rushing defense (101.5), 25th in total defense

    (332.1) and 24th in pass efficiency defense (115.1). TheIowa defense was the last unit in the nation to allow arushing touchdown last season, that coming in Iowas sixthgame.

    The Hawkeyes ranked seventh in the nation in turnovermargin (+1.0) and tied for 11th with 19 pass interceptionsIowa had four interception returns for touchdowns.

    Six Iowa opponents scored one touchdown or less, including two who scored no touchdowns. For the second straighseason, eight of Iowas 12 regular season opponents scored17 points or less.

    For the third straight season, in 2010, Iowa allowed onlyone individual opponent to rush for over 100 yards.

    Iowa ranked 11th in the nation in pass efficiency (155.72)and the Hawkeyes were 50th in scoring offense (28.9). TheHawkeyes were 49th in passing offense (234.5), 57th intotal offense (382.9) and 70th in rushing offense (148.4)Iowa scored 30 or more points in three consecutive BigTen Conference games (Michigan, Wisconsin, MichiganState) for the first time since 2005. Iowa scored 30 or morepoints in six games overall, matching the second highestnumber of games under Kirk Ferentz. Iowa scored 30 omore points in nine games in 2002.

    Iowa had just 11 turnovers (five lost fumbles, six intercep-tions), which ranked second in the nation. Iowa lost justwo fumbles in eight Big Ten games, both in the regularseason finale at Minnesota.

    Iowa was 8-0 in 2010 when rushing for over 120 yards and0-5 when the rushing total was less than 120 yards.

    Iowa ranked sixth in fewest penalty yards per game (37.4and tied for 19th in fewest penalties per game (4.9).

    On special teams, Iowa ranked sixth in the nation in punreturn defense (3.9 average on 21 returns) and 12th in KOreturns (25.3).

    Iowas opponents had 142 possessions, and just sevenstarted in Iowa territory. Arizona and Minnesota had twopossessions start in Iowa territory and Iowa State, North-western and Ohio State started one possession on Iowasend of the field.

    Iowas 100 first half points in 2010 led the Big Ten Conference.

    DIVISION CHAMPS TO MEET IN TITLE GAMEThe Big Ten Conference will stage its first conference

    football championship game Dec. 3 at Lucas Oil Stadiumin Indianapolis. The prime time contest will be televised byFOX to a national audience.

    The Big Tens Legends Division includes Iowa, Michigan,Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Northwestern. TheLeaders Division includes Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, PennState, Purdue and Wisconsin.

    IOWA FOOTBALL AND THE NFL For the second straight year, Iowa had six players selected

    in the 2011 NFL Draft, and for the second straight year thatlist included a first round selection (DE Adrian Clayborn).

    Iowa was one of eight schools to have as many as six play-ers selected in the 2011 NFL Draft. A total of 12 formerHawkeyes were rookies in 2011 NFL training camps.

    Iowa was the only program to have three defensive linemenselected in the 2011 NFL Draft, and all three are on NFLrosters.

    Only two schools, USC (16) and Florida (13), have had

    more players selected in the past two seasons. The Iowa football program was represented by 35 playerson opening day NFL rosters. As many as eight additionalformer Hawkeyes with NFL experience are listed as freeagents, on injured reserve or on practice squads.

    Iowa ranks eighth nationally (second among Big Tenteams) in number former players currently active in theNFL, behind Miami (FL), USC, Texas, Tennessee, OhioState, Georgia and LSU.

    All 11 members of Iowas starting defensive unit in 2008were either drafted in the last three NFL drafts or signedto NFL free agent contracts following the drafts.

    Over the past 10 years, 90 of 100 (90%) of Iowas seniorstarters have been drafted in the NFL or signed NFL free

    agent contracts. At least one Iowa Hawkeye has been selected in every NFLDraft since 1978.

    Iowa has had the most offensive linemen (11) drafted inthe NFL since the 2003 NFL Draft.

    Iowa has placed 20 defensive linemen in the NFL underKirk Ferentz. Every senior starter (seven) under defensiveline Coach Rick Kaczenski has gone on to the NFL.

    Defensive secondary Coach Phil Parker has coached 14Iowa defensive backs to the NFL.

    IOWA VS. RANKED OPPONENTSIowa posted a 4-3 record while facing seven ranked oppo-

    nents in 2010, the most for a Kirk Ferentz coached Hawkeye

    team. Iowa played six ranked teams in 1999 and 2003. Thefour wins over ranked teams are the most for Iowa since post-ing a 4-2 record vs. six ranked opponents in 2003.

    Three of Iowas seven opponents were ranked in the top10, while Missouri was 12th. Iowa lost to No. 10 Wisconsin(31-30), defeated No. 5 Michigan State (37-6) and lost to No.7 Ohio State (20-17), all in Kinnick Stadium. In 2009, Iowadefeated No. 4 Penn State and No. 9 Georgia Tech, whilelosing at No. 8 Ohio State in overtime.

    With the 37-6 win over fifth-ranked Michigan State(10/30/10), Iowa has recorded a victory over a top-five rankedteam in each of the last three seasons. Iowa defeated fourth-

    Iowa and Nebraska will also meet in Kinnick Stadium onthe Friday following Thanksgiving to end the 2012 regularseason.

    IOWA ADDS TROPHY GAME WITH NEBRASKAWhen Iowa and Nebraska resume their series in November,

    the two teams will be playing The Heroes Game, withthe winner claiming the Heroes Trophy. The trophy gamebetween the Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers is the latest trophygame for the Hawkeyes, who also play trophy games withIowa State (Cy-Hawk Trophy), Minnesota (Floyd of Rose-dale) and Wisconsin (Heartland Trophy).

    HEROES CAN BE NOMINATEDOne hero from both Iowa and Nebraska will be honored

    when Iowa and Nebraska play the inaugural Heroes Gamepresented by Hy-Vee, on Friday, Nov. 25 in Lincoln, Neb.

    A nominee must be at least 18 years of age and live, work orgo to school in either Iowa or Nebraska. However, the act ofheroism or good deed need not have occurred in either state.

    One person from both Iowa and Nebraska will be selectedto represent each state at the Heroes Game. They will receivefour tickets to the football game, participate in an on-fieldpresentation, and have their name and hometown inscribedon the Heroes Game trophy.

    HAWKEYE FOOTBALL NOTES Dating back to 2008, Iowa has won 10 of its last 16 games

    away from Iowa City, with two of the six losses comingat the hands of ranked teams and two of the six coming inovertime. A six-game streak was snapped in the overtimeloss at eighth-ranked Ohio State in November, 2009. Theroad winning streak was the longest for Iowa since winning

    all five of its road games during the 2002 regular season.That streak was six straight games away from home, in-cluding the 2001 Alamo Bowl.

    Iowas 2009 win at No. 4/5 ranked Penn State markedIowas first road win over a team ranked in the top fivesince 1990. That season the Hawkeyes scored a 54-28 winat fifth-ranked Illinois. Iowa concluded the 2009 seasonwith a neutral site win over ninth-ranked Georgia Tech inthe Orange Bowl. Iowa has defeated a team ranked in thetop five in each of the last three seasons, including homewins over Penn State (2008) and Michigan State (2010).

    Iowa compiled an eight-year record of 78-36 (.684), 2002-10, third best in the Big Ten. The 78 victories rank as the18th best total in the nation.

    Iowa posted a 46-26 Big Ten record from 2002-10, whichranks second among league teams over that span.

    Kirk Ferentz has been named Big Ten Coach of the Yearthree times (2002, 2004 & 2009) and he was named Na-tional Coach of the Year in 2002.
