Iowa State will debut its newly-renovated Jack Trice Stadium this weekend. The addition of the Sukup End Zone Club and the “bowling” in of the south end zone increases capacity of the stadium to 61,500, making it the third-largest venue in the Big 12 Conference. UNI tight end/offensive tackle coach Ben Barkema earned his undergraduate (2007) and master’s (2011) degrees from Iowa State. Barkema was a GA for the Cyclones from 2008-11 and a tight end at Iowa State (2004-07). His 52 career catches ranks eighth all-time among ISU tight ends. Two walk-on members of the Iowa State team, Breion Creer (DT) and Trever Ryen (WR), transferred from UNI. Creer was on the UNI football team in 2012 and 2013. Ryen didn’t play football at UNI, but was a member of the UNI track & field team in 2013-14. Iowa State is 86-33-4 in season openers. ISU head coach Paul Rhoads is 4-2 in season-openers as the Cyclone mentor. Rhoads enters his seventh season as the Cyclone leader with a career record of 29-46. He’s led the Cyclones to three bowl games (2009 Insight Bowl, 2011 Pinstripe Bowl, 2012 Liberty Bowl) during his tenure at ISU. Iowa State averaged 52,197 fans per game, the fourth-best season attendance total in school history, in 2014. ISU’s first two games could be sellouts. Over 50,000 fans have attended a game in Jack Trice Stadium for a school-record 26-straight games. ISU returns eight starters on offense and six starters on defense. The Cyclones return players with 150 career starts on offense and 98 career starts on defense. ISU boasts five players (Daniel Burton, Jamison Lalk, Brock Dagel, Jake Campos, Oni Omoile) on the offensive line who have started at least 10 games in their career. ISU’s 76 returning starts on the O-Line ranks third in the Big 12. Senior QB Sam Richardson enters his third season as the Cyclone signal-caller. Richardson set the Iowa State single-season mark in completions with 254 in 2014. He also ended the year ranking in ISU’s single-season top-10 in the following categories: TD Passes (T3rd, 18), Total Offense (3rd, 3,090) and Passing Yards (4th, 2,669). Richardson, who ranked 13th nationally and third in the Big 12 in completions per game at 23.1 in 2014, is ranked in the following ISU career categories: Total Offense (4th, 5,617), TD Passes (4th, 37), Completions (4th, 421), Passing Yards (6th, 4,607) and Completion Pct. (6th, 56.1 pct.). Richardson is one of seven returning FBS players with 4,000 career passing yards and 1,000 career rushing yards. ISU will be strong at receiver with the return of senior Quenton Bundrage, junior D’Vario Montgomery and sophomore Allen Lazard. ISU is one of eight schools in FBS who return three receivers with a 40-catch season: Bundrage (48 in 2013), Lazard (45 in 2014) and Montgomery (44 in 2014). IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME• Iowa State has shattered virtually all attendance marks in the Paul Rhoads era.

• Over 50,000 fans have attended a game in Jack Trice Stadium a school-record 26-straight games.

• Eight of the top-10 most attended games in school history have occurred since 2012.

• ISU averaged 52,197 in seven home games in 2014, the fourth-best single-season average in school history.

RECAP OF 2014• Iowa State went 2-10 while facing one of the nation’s toughest schedules in 2014.

• ISU’s schedule ranked 15th nationally in the final Sagarin rankings.

• Of the 12 opponents ISU faced, nine played in FBS bowl games. Another Cyclone opponent was North Dakota State, which won its fourth-straight FCS title.

• Iowa State’s two wins (Iowa, Toledo) came against teams which played in a bowl game.

• Youth and injuries plagued the Cyclones in 2014. A total of 21 players received their first career starts. Of the 21 players, seven were freshmen.

• Because of injuries, the Cyclones only had four players (Tom Farniok, Cory Morrissey, Daniel Burton and Mitchell Meyers) who started every game during the season.

• Iowa State ranked 21st nationally in fewest turnovers in 2014, committing just 16 miscues on the year. The Cyclones won or tied the turnover battle in nine of 12 games. ISU’s 16 turnovers is the third-lowest total in school history.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE OFFENSE• The offense will be led for the second year in a row by offensive coordinator Mark Mangino.

• The former national-coach-of-the-year recipient has eight returning starters to work with, including five offensive linemen who have at least 10 career starts. Junior guard Daniel Burton, a preseason all-conference pick by Phil Steele, will lead the Cyclones in the trenches with 20 career starts.

• One of the top returnees is senior QB Sam Richardson, who leads all current Cyclones in career starts with 21. The Manning Award Watch List member has started a game at QB in each of his first three seasons.

• Richardson broke ISU’s single-season completion mark (254) and recorded the top-two single-game completion totals in 2014: Toledo (37), Texas (36).

• His ability to use his feet makes him even more dangerous. He is one of only four QBs in school history with over 1,000 yards rushing in a career.

• Richardson will have plenty of weapons to choose from in ISU’s receiving corps. The Cyclones return three outstanding deep threats in senior Quenton Bundrage, junior D’Vario Montgomery and freshman Allen Lazard.

• Bundrage went down with a knee injury on the first offensive series of the season-opener last year. He’s healthy and ready to repeat his outstanding performance in 2013 when he recorded 48 catches for 676 yards and nine TDs. His nine TD catches tied the ISU single-season school record.

• Montgomery had an outstanding 2014 season, catching 44 passes for 605 yards. He caught 41 passes for 564 yards in the final seven games of the season.

• Lazard posted one of the best seasons by an ISU rookie receiver in 2014, recording 45 catches for 593 yards and three TDs. Both his reception and receiving yard totals rank second all-time on ISU’s freshman record list.

• The Cyclones will be young at running back. Sophomore Tyler Brown is the only back returning with any experience, rushing for 109 yards on 24 carries as a rookie in 2014.

• Redshirt freshman Mike Warren will get a chance to display his talents after sitting out last year.

• ISU produced 400 yards of total offense four times in 2014: Toledo (454), Texas (524), Texas Tech (569) and West Virginia (410).

• ISU tallied a season-high 569 yards of total offense vs. Texas Tech, the most by the Cyclones in a regulation game since recording 626 yards on Nov. 22, 2008 at Kansas State.

• The Cyclones combined for 82 points in back-to-back games vs. Toledo and Texas, the most points scored by a Cyclone team in back-to-back non-overtime games since 2008.

• ISU was 46th nationally and sixth in the Big 12 in 3rd down conversions (42.3 pct.) in 2014.

• 20 of ISU’s 34 offensive TDs in 2014 were attributed to scoring drives of 75 yards or longer.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE DEFENSE• ISU defensive coordinator Wally Burnham is in his seventh season directing the Cyclone defense.

• Since 2009, Burnham has produced four linebackers who have earned first-team All-Big 12 honors five times (Jesse Smith, A.J. Klein, Jake Knott, Jeremiah George). From 1974-2008, ISU only had two first-team all-conference linebackers.

• Burnham returns six starters on his defensive unit, led by three returning starters in the secondary in CB Nigel Tribune (Jr.), CB Sam Richardson (Sr.) and FS Kamari Cotton-Moya (So.).

• Tribune, a second-team All-Big 12 pick by the AP in 2014, has started 18 career games in his first two seasons and was named to the Sporting News’ preseason All-Big 12 first team. He had 64 tackles, three interceptions and ranked sixth nationally in pass breakups with 13 in 2014.

• Cotton-Moya is the reigning Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year after an outstanding rookie season where he led the team in tackles with 77. He was selected as a First-Team Freshman All-American by the FWAA.

• The defense will feature a slew of junior college transfers who will make their Cyclone debuts this weekend.

• At linebacker, junior Jordan Harris is ready for action after redshirting in 2014. Harris was a second-team NJCAA All-American in 2013.

• Another big addition is DT Demond Tucker. Tucker was the NJCAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. Both Tucker and Harris were teammates at Copiah-Lincoln CC in Mississippi.

• Also look for Jarnor “Jay” Jones to take over the nickel spot after excelling at Georgia Military College last season.

• ISU’s top returner on the defensive line is senior DE Trent Taylor, who had 37 tackles, 5.0 TFL and two sacks in his first season with the Cyclones.

• Senior DE Dale Pierson also started two games on the defensive line last year, recording 29 tackles, 4.5 TFL and two sacks.

• A total of nine former junior college standouts are currently listed on ISU’s defensive two-deep.

• In its last 10 games of 2014, ISU had a +3 turnover differential, forcing 15 turnovers and recording 10 interceptions during that span.

TAKING CARE OF THE BALL• The Cyclones did a remarkable job of taking care of the football in 2014. ISU tallied just 16 turnovers

on the year, ranking 21st nationally in fewest miscues.

• ISU had five fumbles lost to rank ninth nationally. One of the fumbles was on the final play of the Texas game when the Cyclones had to utilize a series of laterals on the final kickoff return.

• ISU’s 16 turnovers in 2014 is the third-lowest total by a Cyclone team in school history.

Lowest Turnover Seasons By A Cyclone Team1. 14 in 2001 (11 games)2. 15 in 2004 (12 games)3. 16 in 2014 (12 games)4. 17 in 1996 (11 games) 17 in 2010 (12 games)

SAM RICHARDSON IN CONTROL OF OFFENSE• Senior QB Sam Richardson has set numerous records and will rank as one of the top signal-callers in

Iowa State history when his career is over.

• As one of just seven returning players in FBS with 4,000 career passing yards (4,607) and 1,000 career rushing yards (1,010), Richardson was named to the preseason Manning Award Watch List for the nation’s top QB.

• Richardson ended the 2014 campaign ranked 13th nationally in completions per game (23.1), 25th nationally in total offense (280.9) and 52nd nationally in passing yards (242.6).

• He also broke the school record for completions in a season with 254.

• In consecutive games against Toledo and Texas, Richardson posted one of the best back-to-back performances by a Cyclone QB in school history, recording the top-two completion marks in the history of Cyclone football: Toledo (37), Texas (36).

• Richardson ended the year ranking in Iowa State’s SEASON top-10 in the following categories: 1st in completions (254), T3rd in TD passes (18), 3rd in total offense (3,090) and 4th in passing yards (2,669).

RECEIVING CORPS SOLIDIFIES OFFENSE• Iowa State returns a solid group of receivers in 2015 to make it one of ISU’s most experienced

position.

• ISU is one of eight teams in FBS to return three receivers who have recorded a 40-catch season: Quenton Bundrage (48 in 2013), Allen Lazard (45 in 2014) and D’Vario Montgomery (44 in 2014).

• In all, Iowa State’s receivers have a combined 205 catches for 2,576 yards and 17 TDs.

• Bundrage missed the entire 2014 season after suffering a knee injury on ISU’s first offensive series.

• In 2013, Bundrage caught 48 passes for 676 yards and 9 TDs. His nine TD catches tied the school record for TD receptions in a season.

• Lazard posted one of the best rookie seasons from a receiver in school history last year, recording 45 catches for 593 yards and three TDs. He has caught a pass in all 12 games of his career.

• Montgomery had 44 catches for 605 yards in 2014, recording 41 receptions and 564 yards in the final seven games.

NETTEN KICKING HIS WAY INTO THE RECORD BOOKS• Junior Cole Netten had one of the finest seasons by a placekicker in Cyclone history in 2014.

• Netten was 11-of-14 on his FG attempts and was perfect on his PAT attempts (35-35) to lead the team in scoring with 68 points. His 78.6 FG percentage ranked 36th nationally, third in the Big 12 and was the third-best single-season FG percentage in school history.

• A honorable mention All-Big 12 pick, Netten had his 11-straight field goals made streak end at Kansas (Nov. 8), which tied the school record for consecutive made field goals with Jeff Shudak (1988-89).

• Against Iowa, Netten hit the game-winning FG, a 42-yarder with 0:02 seconds left. He also hit a career-long 47-yarder in the game.

• In his career, Netten is 24-of-32 (75.0 pct.), the best career percentage in school history.

2015 CAPTAINS• Senior QB Sam Richardson and junior LB Levi Peters were named 2015 Iowa State co-captains.

• Iowa State will have a third player come out for the coin toss who the coaches tabbed as a leader in practice leading up to the game.

• Peters is the first non-senior captain since James White in 2012.

THE NEW AND IMPROVED JACK TRICE STADIUM• Jack Trice Stadium, which debuted in 1975, is in its 40th anniversary season.

• For years, talk of “bowling in” the south end zone has been prevalent. That day is finally here.

• This season, Jack Trice Stadium will unveil its brand new look, as the $60 million South End Zone (SEZ) project is complete.

• The project, with the Sukup End Zone Club as its centerpiece, will make ISU’s gridiron home one of the finest facilities in the nation. Its capacity will increase to 61,500, which is now the third-largest stadium in the Big 12 Conference.

• The Sukup End Zone Club will seat 3,000 and members will have access to a climate-controlled two-level area overlooking the stadium. Patrons in the club can utilize a-al carte food stations, beverage options and HD televisions and audio in the lounge areas.

• A giant videoboard identical to the current board on the north end was also added, making Jack Trice Stadium one of the few stadiums in the country to have two HD video screens at that size (36 feet high, 79.5 feet wide).

• A new ribbon board on both sides (east and west) was also added.

TEAM SUPPORTING MITCHELL MEYERS THROUGH CANCER TREATMENT• Iowa State defensive end Mitchell Meyers, who was one of just four players to start all 12 games in

2014, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in February of 2015.

• Meyers did his chemotherapy treatment in Ames, and at his final treatment in July, the football team surprised him in a show of support. The video of him seeing his teammates went viral.

• Meyers opted to do his radiation treatment in Houston. He missed fall camp and is hoping to return to the team sometime during the season.

JUNIOR COLLEGE PLAYERS HAVE FAMILIARITY• Iowa State has filled in spots in its roster with many junior college players, especially on defense.

• Currently on its two-deep, ISU has nine players on defense who spent time at a junior college prior to arriving in Ames.

• ISU has three players who were named to the 2013 NJCAA All-America team in Demond Tucker (First-Team; NJCAA Defensive Player of the Year), Jhaustin Thomas (First-Team) and Jordan Harris (Second-Team).

• ISU has four sets of JC teammates currently on the roster: Trinity Valley {Texas} CC (Jhaustin Thomas, DE; Jomal Wiltz, CB), Coffeyville {Kansas} CC (Jaypee Philbert Jr., OL; Bobby Leath, DL), Copiah-Lincoln {Mississippi} CC (Demond Tucker, DT; Jordan Harris, LB), Butler {Kansas} CC (Gabe Luna, DE; Trent Taylor, DE).

REMEMBERING CURTIS BRAY• Curtis Bray, who was on head coach Paul Rhoads’ Iowa State staff from 2009-13, passed away

suddenly from a pulmonary embolism in January 2014 at the age of 43.

• Bray was ISU’s defensive ends coach from 2009-13, tutoring multiple defensive ends to All-Big 12 recognition.

• For the second season in a row, Iowa State will honor Bray’s legacy by adorning a patch on their helmets of his initials “CB” throughout the entire season.

• ISU DE Mitchell Meyers changed his uniform number to 58 in honor of Bray, who wore the same number in his outstanding career at Pittsburgh.

• A tradition was started a year ago to honor Bray when All-Big 12 DE Cory Morrissey wore No. 58 in his senior season. Bray coached both Morrissey and Meyers.
