At this writing, the early deer season is over. Ibelieve I saw a few more deer this year buthaven’t taken a shot yet. It was a very warmseason and I had to force myself to go some ofthe time. I hate to hunt when the temps areover about 60 degrees. My favorite days are25 and frosty in the mornings and about 45 inthe afternoons. I usually shoot a doe or twobecause we do like venison. I haven’t given upon that yet. Last year I shot a big doe onChristmas Eve morning. Late bow season ismore weather dependent so hopes are stillhigh. After several years of EHD in my area, itseems there are finally some bucks getting big

enough to be interesting. I have heard of several really big bucks beingtaken. Congratulations to all who have taken any deer with a bow. That’s stilla great accomplishment. I did see a good fight between two pretty goodbucks about 80 yards away but couldn’t get them any closer. That was anoutstanding morning.

OK folks, the 50th Anniversary year of the Iowa Bowhunters Association ishere. It’s hard to believe but the IBA has been preserving, protecting anddefending the rights and seasons of the Iowa bowhunters for 50 years.Space doesn’t allow me to list all the IBA accomplishments over the yearsbut they should show up in the Bowhunter somewhere. It would certainly be

a different hunting experience without the IBA. Your Board is planning agreat Spring Banquet and Fall Festival to celebrate. Stan Potts will be theSpeaker at the Banquet and we hope to implement several improvementssuggested by the membership in the survey that was sent out. There will besome great raffles and auction items as always and possibly some surprises.The Agenda and details are in this issue so check it out and plan on joiningus for the Birthday party.

The legislative season is about to get under way. The most important thingwe need to key on at the moment would be to fund the Natural Resourcesand Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund WITH THE FORMULA THAT IT WASPASSED WITH!!! There are some who would change the formula and takethe wildlife portion out of it and give it all to clean water. We all want cleanwater but the wildlife is very important to millions of Iowans whether theyhunt or not. As always, CWD is more of an issue than most care to believe.That is the biggest long term threat to the deer herd that there is. If we wantour grandchildren and their grandchildren to be able to hunt whitetails in thisState some legislative action needs to be taken to prevent the transportationof cervids through and throughout the state by these breeding facilities andhunting preserves. When this disease is discovered in a facility, the entirefacility must be quarantined because the prions get in the soil and in theplants to continue to spread this disease. This will probably be a tough yearto get progress on these issues but please make a point to communicatewith your Representatives and Senators whenever you can.

The banquet will once again be held at the FFA Enrichment Centerin Ankeny, IA with a change of venue coming next year. A lot of newideas and suggestions came from our members’ survey about thespring banquet. We plan to implement some of those, keep some ofthe ideas that are currently working, and come up with a banquetworthy of our 50th anniversary. As usual, bring in your mounts of

years past to create an awesome display; and maybe somethingother than whitetail to show our diversity. Your board of directors isin short supply of members and highly encourage new blood to getinvolved and help improve both our spring banquet and fall festival;plus make a difference for all bowhunters in the state of Iowa. Planon attending to make our 50th year special and help celebrate ourexistence, accomplishments, and challenges.

Stan Potts has hunted for over 40 years,harvesting numerous whitetail, four of whichare 200-class bucks. Stan hosts Mathews’Dominant Bucks on Outdoor Channel; andco-hosts North American Whitetail TV onSportsman Channel. He’s also appeared inHunt Masters TV, Pro Hunter Journal,Whitetail Country, and HS Outdoors.

In addition to the shows mentioned above,he has appeared in several hunting videosincluding Drury Outdoors Power Calling,Realtree’s Monster Bucks, and Hunter’sSpecialties Prime Time series.

Stan has given hunting seminars all acrossNorth America and been the subject ofmany feature magazine articles. His hunting

successes have been documented in NorthAmerican Whitetail magazine, Bowhuntermagazine, and Illinois Game and Fishmagazine.

Stan hunts 100% wild whitetails on publicand private property and is well known forhis expertise in treestand placement,decoying, and patterning big mature bucks.When it comes to killing big bucks, Stanbelieves hunters need to play the wind andseek out great treestand locations. “I scoutat every place I plan to hunt at to learn theproperty and determine where I think thebucks will be traveling. I used to trap a lotand when you trap, you are always lookingfor the best set location. The same is true

when deer hunting. I always hang my standsin locations where I know the wind will be inmy favor. This seems like common senseand I know many hunters play the wind, butsometimes hunters cut corners. I try to bescent free but playing the wind is necessarywhen chasing big bucks.”

I have received reports of 192 suspect HD cases from 29 countiesthrough the end of November with just one report still needing someclarification. The last reports of fresh suspect deer came from Booneand Warren counties that had reported mortalities during the first threeweeks of November. I will continue to take reports and will keep themon file, however, the map will continue to represent suspectedmortalities through 30 November to avoid duplicate reports fromshotgun season hunters (this is consistent with previous years).

DNR NEWS CONT.Iowa Deer Season UpdateWeather conditions this deer huntingseason have resulted in a slight decreasein harvest and hunters. Compared to lastyear at this time, the number of hunters isdown 7% (10,798 fewer hunters), andthe number of licenses sold is down 4%.As you would expect, this has resulted in5% (3,342) fewer deer being harvested.In particular, the weather during most ofthe fall was unseasonably warm. The heatlikely reduced daytime movement bydeer. Other negative effects of the warmweather were more biting insects, and theneed to cool down harvested animalsmore quickly before they spoil.

Temperatures finally started coolingduring the second half of November,which allowed some of the bow hunters toplay catch up at the tail end of the rut.Overall archery harvest is only down 1%,but antlered harvest is actually up 2%. Iwas able to experience this first hand,seeing very good activity November 16and 17, and bagging my buck on the17th.

The first shotgun season was a mixed bagfor hunting conditions. While weather wasnearly ideal on Saturday, overnight rain

and snow created less than idealconditions on Sunday in regards toaccessibility. However, snow cover thatpersisted did help for seeing and trackingdeer. Reported harvest during the firstshotgun season was down about 5%from last year.

Because deer populations across most ofthe state have been stable to increasingthe past few years, the reduced harvest inthe early part of the season will result inmore opportunities for the later seasons,especially the second shotgun season andlate muzzleloader. With the weatherdrastically changing course recently,hunting opportunities should be prettygood for hunters willing to brave the cold.Hunting over food sources, especiallyturnips should provide some of the bestopportunities.

On the disease front, hemorrhagicdisease (HD) once again had minimalimpacts to the deer herd across the state.There were a couple counties, Boone andMonona, with a bump in suspect HDreports. These were interesting in they arenot traditionally counties that experienceloss due to HD. In some localized areaswithin those counties, hunters may notice

fewer deer. However, overall harvest inthose counties is not different than therest of the state. Much more importantlyon the disease front is Chronic WastingDisease (CWD), which has much greaterpotential to impact the long-term healthand population of deer in Iowa. The DNRcontinues statewide CWD surveillance,with increased testing in northeast Iowawhere we have detected 6 positives inwild deer from Alamakee County in2013, 2014, and 2015. We have alsoincreased monitoring in eastern Iowa andsouthern Iowa as the distance of positivedeer in Illinois and Missouri continues toget closer to the Iowa border. White-taileddeer managers across North America arestruggling with effective CWDmanagement strategies. Ultimately, we willgreatly rely on hunters to assist withmanagement of CWD, and are gratefulfor your cooperation thus far in collectingtissue samples for disease testing.Unfortunately, recent published researchhas documented population level impactsto the white-tailed deer herd in Wyoming,where disease prevalence rates havebeen steadily increasing for the majorityof the past half-century.

FALL FESTIVALIn keeping with the Spring Banquet ideas and improvements, weplan on a bigger and better Fall Festival in August. Details will becoming in future Iowa Bowhunter issues and on the website andfacebook.

It’s time to make the tax season just a little bit wild….Since 1982, when the Iowa legislature created the Fish and Wildlife Fund Tax Check-off, Iowans have been able to bring a littlewildness into the tax season. The Fish and Wildlife Tax Check-off, affectionately called the Chickadee Check-off was created toallow people to make a charitable donation to wildlife conservation in Iowa out of their tax refunds or by tacking a few dollars onto any taxes owed. When filling out the state income tax form, just look for the contribution line (usually somewhere betweenlines 55-60) and write in any dollar amount next to Fish/Wildlife.

All the money contributed through the chickadee check-off helps support the Wildlife Diversity Program at the Iowa DNR. Thisprogram has statewide responsibility for all the wildlife that can’t be hunted, fished or trapped from Peregrine Falcons toPoweshiek Skipperling butterflies. You can learn more about the program on their website: www.iowadnr.gov/wildlifediversity.

BONKERS WORLDThe rut has come and gone. Well, I think there was a rut thisyear. It was hard to tell. It was so warm for so many of the days Ihunted it felt like I was still in Mexico. I still saw plenty of deer,but not the craziness I saw last year and nothing that I wanted toput an arrow through.

The closest I came to crazy activity was the evening a doetrotted into view. She stopped at the edge of the field just longenough to sniff the air, eyeball the group of does already thereand look over her shoulder. Then she raced into the field. All thedoes stopped to look at her as she sped by them. I thought forsure there was a buck hot on her trail. Nope. She was alone.She got to the fence and stopped in her tracks. She scanned thenext field for a few seconds, ears forward, tail straight back; shewas the essence of intensity. She wheeled around and racedback to the middle of the field where she literally skidded to astop and went into scan mode again.

She repeated this running-scanning-running behavior for severalminutes. The other does would just occasionally look up fromthe rye they were browsing, glance in her direction and go backto browsing the rye. She finally jumped a fence and disappearedinto the dusk. That was the craziest I’ve ever seen a doe act.

You know what’s even crazier than that? Discussing -1/12 (readthat as negative 1 over 12) at deer camp. Our fourth for euchrecouldn’t be there that particular evening so to fill in the euchre-less void we discussed mathematics. Yup. Mathematics.

It was pretty highbrow stuff. It seems as though there is a theorythat if you started adding 1+2+3+4 to infinity the result isactually -1/12. Don’t sound quite right do it? I figured they werepulling my mathematically challenged leg. But paper wasproduced, figures were scribbled and the proof was, well, Greekto me.

Archimedes, the father of mathematics and incidentally a Greek,could have descended from the heavens and tried to explainhow adding all the numbers in the world together results in theanswer -1/12.

I lay on my cot that night with numbers spinning around in myhead like a tornado. How could it be? No matter how manytimes I added up all the numbers in the world I came up with likea thousand bazillion gazillion not -1/12. I didn’t sleep very wellthat night.

Dawn found me sitting in a tree still puzzling over -1/12. I tookoff my boots and socks, remember it was warm this year, andcounted on my toes and fingers. The only way I came up with -1/12 was if I held a fist over my toes with my index fingerextended, then curled my index finger into my fist so I had takenaway 1 (-1) over 12. Yes I have 12 toes. At least I wish I did,then -1/12 may have made sense.

I drove home that night so I could vote early the next morning,take my wife out for breakfast and get caught up on a few things

around the house. We went to the polls and cast our votesfollowed by a visit to the local breakfast place. I ordered themeat lovers omelet and my wife ordered a very tall short stack.

While we were eating I asked my wife, who knows everything inthe world worth knowing, what the sum of all the numbers in theworld would be. Her answer was definitely not -1/12. It wasmore like wondering aloud what Winterkill had fed me at deercamp. That conversation ended abruptly when I said squirrelsoup. She couldn’t finish her very tall short stack at the thoughtof eating squirrel, soup or otherwise. I, on the other hand,thought the squirrel soup was outstanding and told her so as Ifinished her very tall short stack.

That evening found me, like most other Americans, sitting infront of their TVs watching election results. It was incredible. Thecommentators couldn’t believe what they were seeing. It was asif someone had whispered in their earpiece that the sum of allthe numbers in the world was -1/12. I understood what theywere feeling. Not because of the elections, but that damn -1/12stuff.

In the days that followed I hunted quite a lot but never saw any ofthe crazy rut activity I had anticipated. The only craziness was allthe thinking I was doing about -1/12. I eventually googled -1/12. What I found was a video that explained how -1/12 canbe the sum of all the numbers in the world.

After watching that video I still think there was a bit ofmathematical trickeration afoot. What I do know is what I don’tknow, and that’s mathematics and deer. The more you think youknow, the more yourealize you don’tknow anything.Mother Nature andthe guys that cameup with -1/12make up their ownrules and we canonly watch indisbelief.

IOWA GAMESThe Iowa Bowhunters Association is proud to announce thatthey have partnered with the Iowa Sports Foundation to bringyou the official Iowa Games 3D Shoot through their IBA100% clubs. The IBA board of directors and Iowa gamesofficials decided that it is best to have the shoot at the sameclub two consecutive years. An application to host the shoot

will be available soon in the IBA Iowa Bowhunter.

The location for the 2017/2018 Iowa Games shoot has beenselected from the existing applicants and will be held at SouthCentral Bowhunters of Iowa club located near Chariton, Iowa.

chance to host either the first or second leg. The third leg of theShootout will always be at the Fall Festival location.

The first and second legs of the IBA Shootout for 2017 will belisted at a later date. Look for a Shootout flyer in the Springissue of Bowhunter.

The first leg of the IBA Shootout will be at the Hickory RidgeBowhunters in Pella, IA; and the second leg of the IBA Shootoutwill be at the Johnson County Archers in North Liberty, IA. Withthe third leg at the IBA Fall Festival.

FOR YOUR INFORMATIONIowa State University White-tailed Deer Fawn Study

Over the summer and fall, you may notice fawns in and around Ledges State Park that have radio collars or ear tags. These fawnsare part of a study being conducted by personnel in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management at Iowa StateUniversity to learn about fawn survival in central Iowa.

Our goals: Iowa is known for its high-quality deer population. White-tailed deer experience the highest rate of mortality within thefirst year of life. We aim to estimate fawn survival and identify causes of mortality. Identifying factors associated with fawn survivalmay increase our understanding of deer population dynamics and aid in their management.

Our methods:We are locating and capturing fawns by hand, ideally within their first week of life. We will record sex, age, weight,and condition of fawns and fit them with ear tags and radio collars that will expand as the fawns grow and eventually fall off. Afterrelease, we will monitor fawn survival and their use of the landscape. If a fawn dies, we will find it and determine why it died.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION CONT.DNR director: 'Relief' needed to maintain fishand wildlife trust fundThe Iowa Department of Natural Resources will have to cut staffand services provided by the Fish and Wildlife Trust Fund if thestate doesn't approve a revenue increase, Director Chuck Gippsaid Tuesday.

The trust is funded primarily through fishing and hunting licensefees. Both are $19 annually for Iowa residents. Those fees areapproved by the Legislature and support a number of servicesacross the state including fish hatcheries, boat ramps, wildlifemanagement, education and research.

Gipp, speaking at a budget hearing before Gov. Terry Branstad,noted fishing license fees were last increased more than adecade ago. He said revenue has remained relatively stablesince then, but the general cost of doing business has increasedas things like health care, gas and equipment costs rise.

“It’s been a challenge," Gipp said. "So without some type ofrelief there, we’re going to be reducing (staffing and services)significantly – about 10 to 15 percent by next year."

Gipp said he's encouraged advocacy groups that representhunters and fishermen to contact their state representativesabout raising the licensing fees.

"This is your trust fund. You’re the ones that benefit," he said hetold them. "... So if you want to continue to receive this service

we’ve been providing you, you’re going to have to be theadvocate for the revenue that’s necessary to provide thoseservices."

Branstad said after the presentation he is "neutral" about raisingthe fees.

Gipp said that like other state agencies, the Department ofNatural Resources has infrastructure projects it needs toaddress.

“The newest facility we have is a fish hatchery at Rathbun(Lake),” Gipp says. “But that’s 25 years old and the liners ofthose fish ponds that grow the fish are now 25 years old andneed replacements, so you’re looking at $1 million or more justto replace that type of facility.”

The department requested a "status quo" budget for the nextfiscal year without any increases over the previous year'sfunding. The department spends about $132 million annually,with about $15 million of that coming from the state's generalfund and about $42 million coming from the Fish and WildlifeTrust Fund.

Branstad will hear from all state agencies before issuing hisbudget proposal to the Legislature at the start of the 2017legislative session. Lawmakers will return to Des Moines inJanuary to begin work on the budget and other state issues.

Looking for a Few Good Men or WomenAre you at that stage in life that you have some time that you would like to volunteer and give back. Your kids haveleft the nest and you don’t have grandkids yet. As in any organization, we need new people to introduce new ideas and stay current with the times to besuccessful; and also to continually improve the IBA organization. Your involvement helps to ensure that the huntingopportunities we enjoy now will continue for generations to come.

The board meets 5 times a year and never during an archery season; after all we are bowhunters. Three of themeetings are held separately in Des Moines, one is in Des Moines during the Spring Banquet, and one is in Eldoraduring the Fall Festival. To earn this scholarship, you must write an essay not morethan 500 words on at least two of the following topics, andinclude a photo of yourself.

These essays must be in the hands of your IBA President nolater than July 5. Members of the IBA Board of Directors willjudge them. This scholarship cannot be given to the sameperson more than once; and will be announced at the FallFestival.

This scholarship will be given when notice of college enrollmentis provided to the IBA Treasurer; and the check will be written tothe college.

NASP InformationAnother thing the IBA is doing to support our youth is givingaway some prizes to a few essay winners that shot in the NASPdivision at the Fall Festival. This year the IBA gave away a bow,arrows, and a bow case; all of which will be awarded at theupcoming Spring Banquet. If you were not able to shoot thisyear, plan on attending next year as it was a very exciting andrewarding time. A lot of kids shot the shoot and a lot of peoplealso watched the event. We hope this event will grow bigger andbigger each year, and hope to see you next year.
