What is Introductory PharmacyPractice Experience (IPPE)?

Develops student’s sense of professionalism by fostering the behavior, attitudes and values of a health care professional

Provides the students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills taught in didactic coursework to patient/population care in various practice settings

Assists in the preparation for student participation in Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences.

Assists in career path exploration and identification of the roles and responsibilities of the pharmacist in the healthcare system.

Scheduling Caveat

A minimum cumulative professional GPA of 2.1 will be required at

the end of the Spring Semester in order to complete the IPPE

courses.

A minimum cumulative professional GPA of 2.1 will be required

following the Fall P1 semester in order for students to be scheduled

in either the first session of Community IPPE, Health and Wellness

winter or spring break weeks or in one of the first 4 summer weeks

of Health and Wellness IPPE. Students below the 2.1 GPA

minimum will be scheduled in later summer sessions/weeks. This

policy is in place to avoid last minute cancelation of rotations due to

a student’s inability to obtain the GPA progression requirement.

Where can I do Community IPPE?

Students cannot complete the IPPE at a site they have

previously or currently work.

Students can complete the IPPE at a different site of the

same pharmacy chain.

Students may continue to work at other places of

employment when not completing the IPPE (evenings and

weekends)

Students are not allowed to be paid (Accreditation Council

for Pharmacy Education Standards) or pay for an IPPE

Community Pharmacy placement.

Community Pharmacy IPPE Site Selection Process

The Rx Preceptor list will consist of sites in New

York and Vermont only. These sites include a

wide geographic area to meet student housing

needs

Students will be allowed to set up special

arrangement sites in other US states

Community Pharmacy IPPE cannot be completed

in other countries.

Page 10: Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) · • 3 week rotation/3 credits • Students complete 40 hour/week schedule under supervision of a pharmacist (M-F; 8 hours per

Community Pharmacy IPPE- Special Arrangement Policy

A “Special Arrangement “ site for Community Pharmacy IPPE may

be set up in New York or Vermont only if there is no currently

available site (on ACPHS roster of sites in Rx Preceptor) located

within a 30 minute drive from the student residence (as determined

by the placement profile submitted by each student).

Community Pharmacy IPPE special arrangements may only be

completed in session 2, 3 or 4. This requirement allows sufficient

time to accommodate the expected large number of student requests.

Session 4 is considered to be comparable to session 1. It allows the

student to have a large block of the summer free prior to IPPE and

return to the college.

after completing the required community IPPE rotation. There may

be opportunities to complete this elective on 15 consecutive

Saturdays during the P2 year.

Sites are limited and are selected by the college based on

availability.

Students will be placed on a first come first serve basis.

There is no additional cost

Activities will involve a health related topic, may not be

specifically related to medications.

Remember the purpose is to get involved in public health.

This experience will NOT be completed in a pharmacy

setting or with a pharmacist.

Students will be placed at sites which allow

communication and interaction with various populations

of people to complete a project focused on

wellness/disease prevention.

Student Placement Profile• Submitted by December 11, 2015

• Save document in the following format:

• lastname, firstname.

• If document is not saved in this format, the form will not be accepted and will be

sent back for revision.

• Special Interests – For Health and Wellness placement please indicate if you

enjoy working with children and/or the elderly. Also note any special interests

you might have.

• Question 3 – Summer Scheduling Issues is where you will add if you have

any summer scheduling issues. Vacation or work does NOT constitute a

summer scheduling issue.

For International students or students that live in a distant state and do not

make special arrangements, you may indicate that you would prefer your

rotations in either the beginning (Session 1) or end of the summer (Session

4). Session 1 and Session 4 are considered interchangeable. There are

limited session 1 availabilities.

Please keep in mind that IPPEs are required courses and are part of the

Pharm. D. curriculum at ACPHS. They are no less important than any other

required course offered at a specific time. I urge you to keep this in mind

before scheduling any vacation/work time during the summer months.

Site SelectionCommunity

Students input ranked preferences into RxPreceptor December 9 - 21

Computer generates rotation site based on preference and availability

and it is not first come first serve

Remember do NOT pick a site that you “think” you can go to.

DO NOT PICK ONE SITE MULTIPLE TIMES! Choosing a site more

than once is a wasted choice

If making special arrangements unless your Special Arrangements have

been finalized you should make choices. Special Arrangements will

override any choices made in Rx.

Health and Wellness

Students will not pick Health and Wellness sites. Students will be

assigned to a site in area surrounding the home campus

If you want to do a rotation at a site that is outside the Capital District

you are encouraged to complete a Special Arrangement.

E-mail notifications will be sent (December and January) regarding the

availability of rotations sites outside of campus area. These will be

assigned on a first come first serve basis.

Intern permit- allows students to perform pharmacist

functions, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist

You MUST have an intern permit for each state in which you complete a rotation

→ Permits are only required for community IPPE rotations (not TBC)

→ Intern Permits are state-specific – be sure you have the appropriate state’s permit

→ Intern Permits are YOUR responsibility to apply for

→ You must have an ORIGINAL intern permit with you at all sites – No copies

(e.g. if on rotation and working nights/weekends elsewhere, you must bring the

original permit with you)

→ Students will be removed from/asked to leave the site if they do not have the

required permit (incurring $250 change fee, and will be placed at an alternate site determined by

ACPHS.)

Intern Permits, continued

⇒ Students are eligible to apply for a NYS intern permit after successful

completion of P1 year

• $70 application fee; valid for 5 years

⇒ Students are eligible to apply for a VERMONT intern permit after completion

of 2nd year, so you can apply at any time throughout the year• There is no application fee for a VT permit

• Vermont intern permits expire July 31 of odd years, so you will need to renew it before APPEs

• Emails to follow in the Winter/Spring

Additional Requirements…..

ALL students entering IPPE rotations must have a current physical exam (PE) and Tuberculosis (TB) screening

submitted by Thursday, March 31, 2016.

Physical exams and TB screenings are valid for ONE YEAR

and must cover you for ALL rotations.

Physical Examand

TB Screening documentation

Page 50: Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) · • 3 week rotation/3 credits • Students complete 40 hour/week schedule under supervision of a pharmacist (M-F; 8 hours per

Physical Exam

Tuberculosis (TB) Infection ScreeningThere are two kinds of TB infection screening tests:

→ Tuberculosis skin test (TST) - also called a Mantoux or PPD

→ Tuberculosis blood test - also called Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA)

Please note the differences and timeframes for each type of testing:

IGRAs (blood tests) only require 1 trip to the healthcare facility

Results require 24-48 hours, plus the time it takes to send to your MD. Please factor the time into the deadlines

IGRAs require that the sample be processed within 8-30 hours after collection. Therefore, you cannot have blood drawn on a Friday if it cannot be processed until Monday.

A skin test (PPD) requires 2 trips to the healthcare facility (one for placement, one for reading)

For PPDs, you must return 48-72 hours after test is placed to have it read; therefore, you cannot have it placed on a Thursday, if the facility isn’t open on the weekend

IGRAs can be costly/insurance may not cover it, so you may choose a PPD for cost-effectiveness

Page 51: Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) · • 3 week rotation/3 credits • Students complete 40 hour/week schedule under supervision of a pharmacist (M-F; 8 hours per

Tuberculosis Screening RESULTS

If you had a prior TB test and the result was “+” (positive):

→ No TB test needs to be done this year (but prior results must be shown)

→ Documentation of a negative chest x-ray is REQUIRED

→ Physical exam documentation must be turned in (Your provider must indicate that you

have been evaluated for signs of active TB infection, and are cleared for rotations.)

NOTE: If you were PPD+ in the past, you can choose to have an IGRA (blood test) done this year, as this test is more accurate than a PPD, and should reflect as negative! That way, you don’t need to be evaluated further or have future chest x-rays to test for disease.

If you had a prior TB test and the result was“-” (negative), but your recent

results indicate that you are now “+” (positive):

→ You MUST receive a chest x-ray and provide a copy of the x-ray report to me

→ Updated physical exam documentation must be turned in, as well

(Your provider must indicate that you have been evaluated for signs of active TB infection, and are

cleared for rotations.)

Page 52: Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) · • 3 week rotation/3 credits • Students complete 40 hour/week schedule under supervision of a pharmacist (M-F; 8 hours per

TB Screening documentation (cont.)

PPD readings must take place within a medical facility -

Family members/friends should not be reading results

outside of the provider office, even if they are medical

professionals. Results must be documented in your personal

medical record.

Students must provide me with official documentation of a

Tuberculosis screening – I no longer provide a form to use.

Your doctor’s office can provide you with appropriate

documentation (which must include: date placed, date read,

manufacturer, lot #, results)

Page 53: Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) · • 3 week rotation/3 credits • Students complete 40 hour/week schedule under supervision of a pharmacist (M-F; 8 hours per

Physical Exam and TB screening, cont.

⟡ The physical exam and TB Screening must be performed between

August 26, 2015 – March 31, 2016so that they cover you through the entire IPPE rotation calendar

• Community runs from May 23 – August 19

• Health and Wellness runs from May 16 – August 26

⟡ Both are valid for 1 year, so must be completed annually before

rotations begin

⟡ You can complete your physical and/or PPD with your own physician,

or find one locally (Student Health Center, UVMC)

⟡ Your completed paperwork will be uploaded into CoreELMS

⟡ Forms and reminders will be emailed to the class soon

Page 54: Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) · • 3 week rotation/3 credits • Students complete 40 hour/week schedule under supervision of a pharmacist (M-F; 8 hours per

Physical Exam and TB screening, cont.

PLEASE REMEMBER……

⧐ These are health requirements of all rotation sites, not just ACPHS

⧐ Students are financially responsible for the physical and TB test

⧐ A TB screening takes at least 3 days to complete!! PPD (skin test) – you have the test placed one day, and you go back 2-3 days later to have it read

IGRA (blood test) – you only go to the healthcare facility one time to have your blood drawn, but it takes 2-3 days for results to come back

Factor in if your result is positive and you need a chest x-ray

⧐ DO NOT SCHEDULE YOUR TB SCREENING AT THE END OF THE WEEK – facilities typically are not open on weekends for a PPD reading (blood must be tested within 30 hours, or test is invalid)

⧐ If getting a PPD (not IGRA), schedule the PPD FIRST, and then the PE (if your PPD results are positive, your doctor can evaluate you properly during your PE for active signs of disease.)

⧐ Students will not be allowed to begin a rotation due to incomplete health paperwork!(incurring $250 change fee, and will be placed at an alternate site determined by ACPHS.)

CPR or Basic Life Support certification(Certification must include hands-on skills training; Students must have valid

certification while on rotation, per ACPE accreditation standards.)

Classes can be taken through American Red Cross, American Heart

Association or any certified trainer

Certifications are typically valid for 2 years, so will need to be renewed

before APPEs

Copies of certifications must be sent to Diana Foster; Details to be emailed

to class

NametagAll students must wear an ACPHS or generic nametag while on any rotation

(Nametags from other places of employment are not acceptable

while on rotation.)

HIPAA and Bloodborne Pathogens trainings are valid for 1 year, and must be completed annually

These modules are designed as initial trainings and annual reinforcements of the material

They are meant to reinforce the requirements regarding protected health information and when a person comes in contact with human blood, body fluids and other potentially infectious materials.

Rotation sites may also require you to complete their site-specific trainings – can never be reinforced too much!
