Week

Introduction to World Space WeekAbout WSW

World Space Week (WSW) is an international celebration of space science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events:

October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.

WSW is open to all. Government agencies, industry, non-profit organizations, teachers and individuals can organize events to celebrate World Space Week.

Objectives of WSW

World Space Week celebration aims to achieve the following objectives. Educate people around the world about the benefits that they receive from space Encourage greater use of space for sustainable economic development Demonstrate public support for space programmes Excite young people about science Foster international cooperation in space outreach and education

About World Space Week Association (WSWA)

World Space Week Association (WSWA) which coordinates the word-wide celebration of this week on behalf of the United Nations was founded in 1981. WSWA recruits and supports a worldwide network of National Coordinators and event organizers. This non-government and non-profit international organization is based in the United States.

National Coordinators

The WSWA leads a global team of National Coordinators, who organize events within their own country. A global network of organizations and individuals coordinates this annual event at the national and local levels. These coordinators invite organizations to hold events, publicize the resulting World Space Week celebration through the media, and report on the results.

National Coordinators

WSW ThemeWSW theme is selected by the World Space Week Association Board of Directors to highlight an aspect of space with broad appeal to humanity. Each year, the World Space Week Association, in coordination with the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs, selects a theme that participants are asked to incorporate into their World Space Week events, activities and promotional materials.

Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), being the National Space Agency, has been organizing World Space Week (WSW) activities in Pakistan since 2005.

SUPARCO holds a number of events throughout Pakistan, primarily, to create awareness amongst students, decision-makers and the general public about the peaceful uses of outer-space, the benefits of space-based assets to humanity, and the progress made by Pakistan in space technology and its applications.SUPARCO organizes a number of activities during WSW. Following is the list of activities that SUPARCO has held:

Note: Please note that the activities listed above are mentioned for reference only. Any number of creative ideas, which may motivate students about space, science and technology, can be implemented. However, all the activities should be related to WSW and should be organized during WSW i.e. 4-10 Oct.

Review of WSW celebration in Pakistan:

2005 Theme: “Discovery & Imagination World Space Week 2005 was celebrated from 19 – 25 Nov in Pakistan. It commenced with a vibrant inauguration ceremony on 19 Nov 05, held at HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry Auditorium, University of Karachi (KU). A science caravan sponsored by SHELL Pakistan Ltd departed on the same day from Karachi to interior Sindh and sky simulation shows, and movies and lectures of space were arranged at PIA Planetarium for students and public for the entire week. About 3500-4000 students and teachers from 23 participating schools of interior Sindh benefited from this programme. A seminar on "Space Sciences & the World Challenges of 21st century" was also organized by ISPA, at the KU. A Space Week Walk was organized in Karachi on 20 Nov in which nearly 1000 people of all ages took part. Space Family Fair was also arranged from 26-27 Nov at Maritime Museum for general

2006 Theme: “Space for Saving Lives”

An impressive inauguration ceremony, on 6 November 2006, at the Institute of Space Technology (IST) Islamabad marked the beginning of the week. A panel discussion on "Space Technology and the Future of Pakistan” was held on the same day at IST Islamabad. Also a seminar on the theme "Space for Saving Lives" was organized on 06 Nov 2006 at IST, Islamabad. SUPARCO organized science awareness programme in the rural areas of Sindh in which lectures were given and videos were shown on space technology and its applications to students and teachers of schools. Quiz & declamation competitions were organized at SUPARCO Headquarters, Karachi. Students from various schools of Karachi participated in the competitions. On 11 Nov 06 at PAF Museum, students of various schools of Karachi presented their models and posters on the theme “Space for Saving Lives”. A two-day space family fair was organized at PAF Museum on 11&12 November 2006 as part of World Space Week celebrations.

2007 Theme: “50 years of Space”

The year 2007, being the 50th Anniversary of space exploration beginning with the launch of SPUTNIK-1 in 1957, was celebrated with special zeal. SUPARCO held WSW celebrations from 6-11 November 2007 in Pakistan. During this entire week various competitions among school students served to increase awareness of space among schools students and the general public. The inaugural ceremony was held on Tuesday 06 November 2007 at Bahria University Auditorium in Karachi. The WSW 2007 celebrations in Pakistan culminated with a two-day Space Family Fair on 10-11 November 2007 at PAF Museum in Karachi. Apart from the colorful fun activities at the fair, SUPARCO organised stalls for highlighting different applications of space technologies. Dramatics competitions, model making competitions, on-spot poster-making competitions and finals of the declamation and quiz competitions were held at the fair. Highlights of the event were space-related documentaries in Urdu, display of vehicle tracking and telemedicine units and their working and demonstration of water rockets.

2008 Theme: “Exploring the Universe”

World Space Week celebrations were held at Institute of Space Technology- Islamabad f rom 10 th to 16th November and from 28 Oct to 4 Nov in Karachi, comprising series of events to promote knowledge and awareness about space in Pakistan. A large number of schools, colleges and universities participated enthusiastically. Institute of Space Technology (IST) arranged a two-day workshop on Space Technology and arranged lectures for three days from 10 -12 November 2008, in different schools and colleges of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. IST also organized a Space Week Walk at Rawal Lake. On 13 November 2008 a “Space Technology Symposium” was held at IST where scientists presented research papers on themes like inertial navigation system, geographic information system, satellite communications etc. Besides organizing Planet Watch at University of Karachi, SUPARCO held essay writing competition, quiz, declamation, painting, water rocket and aero modeling competitions. Astronomy nights and family fair were also organized at Islamabad and Karachi.

2009 Theme: “Space for Education”

The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) organized a number of events and activities to celebrate World Space Week 2009 in Pakistan’s two largest cities Karachi and Lahore as well as some rural areas in the south of the country. The inaugural ceremony of World Space Week 2009, organized by SUPARCO was held on Monday, 05 October 2009 at National Center for Remote Sensing & Geo Informatics (NCRG), Karachi and at Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park, Lahore. The various activities organized during the week included: Panel discussion on the theme of WSW 2009, Sky Simulation show at PIA Planetarium Karachi, space awareness lectures for school teachers, space awareness programme for school students, quiz competition, declamation contest, model making competition and poster making competition amongst students. SUPARCO also arranged family fair and sky observation through telescope.

2010 Theme: “Mysteries of Cosmos”

SUPARCO organized a number of events and activities to celebrate World Space Week 2010 in four major cities of Pakistan; Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar. The event was a huge success and was widely covered by electronic and print media of Pakistan such as GEO news, SAMAA TV, Indus TV, Aaj TV, ARY news, Express news, Dunya news, CNBC Pakistan Metro One, Dawn newspaper, The News, Daily Times, Express Tribune etc.The inaugural ceremony of World Space Week 2010, was held on 04 October at the National Centre for Remote Sensing & Geo Informatics (NCRG), Karachi. In Lahore, World Space Week 2010 commenced with an inauguration ceremony on 04 Oct 2010 at Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park, Lahore. Institute of Space Technology (IST) held a series of events at its campus in Islamabad from 4 to 8 Oct 2010. A number of schools were invited to take part in these events. The World Space Week in Peshawar was celebrated at University of Engineering & Technology, Peshawar (UET) with the sponsorship SUPARCO.

2011 Theme: “50 Years of Human Spaceflight”

Established on 16 Sept 1961, SUPARCO celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012. In this context a number of events throughout Pakistan were organized, primarily, to create awareness amongst students, decision-makers and the general public about the peaceful uses of outer-space, the benefits of space-based assets to humanity, and the progress made by Pakistan in space technology and its applications. The major focus was to enthuse students with the mysteries of the universe and man’s quest to unravel these. World Space Week 2011 was organized at Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Gilgit and Quetta simultaneously from 04 – 10 October 2011. Major events conducted during WSW 2011 programmes were: Inauguration Ceremony, Quiz Competition, Seminar on WSW 2011 theme “50 Years of Human Spaceflight”, Publication of Space Booklets, Special Supplement in Newspaper, Space Awareness Lectures for School Teachers, Mobile Education Bus, Space Theatre, Sky Simulation Shows, Sky Gazing, Telescope Distribution, Declamation Contest, Aero Modeling Competition, Poster Making and Sketching Competitions, Model Making Competition, Water Rocket Competition, Essay Writing Competition, e-Poster Designing Competition, Paper Plane Flying Competition, Space Fair and Exhibitions. Events of the WSW 2011 received broad coverage by print and electronic media.

2012 Theme: “Space for Human Safety and Security”

In 2012 SUPARCO celebrated World Space Week in 10 major cities of Pakistan: Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Gilgit, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Abbottabad and Hyderabad. WSW 2012 was by far the largest event ever organized in Pakistan. A number of events throughout Pakistan were organized on the WSW 2012 theme “Space for Human Safety and Security”, primarily to create awareness amongst students, decision makers and the general public about the peaceful uses of outer space, the benefits of space based assets to humanity, and the progress made by Pakistan in space technology and its applications. WSW celebrations formally commenced with exuberant inuagration ceremonies in 10 cities. Different activities were organized for students and general public which included events like Water Rocket Competition, Sky Simulation Show, Quiz Competition, Declamation Contest, Model Making and Aero Modeling Competitions, Space Awareness Seminar, Poster Competition, Astronomy Nights, Space Fair and Exhibition and many others.The first National Space Conference with the theme of “Space for Human Safety and Security “was organized during WSW from 8-9 Oct. The conference was held at University of Karachi, and was organized in collaboration with SUPARCO, Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology, Institute of Space Technology, Higher Education Commission and Pakistan Physical Society, Sindh Chapter. WSW 2012 events received excellent media courage. Around 25 TV channels, 3 radio stations and 35 newspapers all over the country covered the events and published news on WSW activities.

2013 Theme: “Exploring Mars-Discovering Earth”

This year World Space week was celebrated in 11 major cities of Pakistan which are:

Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Gilgit, Multan, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Abbottabad and Hyderabad. SUPARCO also provided support, in terms of providing educational material, banners, posters and guidance, to different schools & colleges in small cities like Pishin, Larkana and Ghotki for

celebrating WSW 2013. Around 145 activities were conducted throughout Pakistan for the celebration of WSW 2013. Different educational institutes and space entities collaborated with SUPARCO for organizing the World Space Week.Different activities were organized for students and general public which included events like Water Rocket Competition, Sky Simulation Show, Quiz Competition, Declamation Contest, Model Making and Aero Modeling Competitions, Space Awareness Seminar, Poster Competition, Astronomy Nights, Space Fair and Exhibition and many others.

2014 Theme: “Space: Guiding Your Way”

World Space Week 2014 was held from 4th to 10th November in Muslim countries due to Eid-ul-Azha. SUPARCO celebrated world Space week in 10 major cities of Pakistan: Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Gilgit, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Abbottabad, Multan as well as in Larkana, Dadu, and Umar Kot. SUPARCO provided financial, technical and advisory support to partner institutions in these cities, as well as educational material, banners, posters and brochures.

Participation from Academia, public sector and stakeholders during the WSW 2014 was commendable and received wide media coverage throughout the country. A large number of educational institutions collaborated with SUPARCO for joint events during WSW.

2015 Theme: “Discovery”

World Space Week 2015 was held from 5th to 11th October. SUPARCO celebrated world space week in 10 major cities of Pakistan: Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Gilgit, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Abbottabad, Multan as well as in Larkana, Dadu, Umerkot and Tando Allah Yar. SUPARCO provided financial, technical and advisory support to partner institutions in these cities, as well as educational material, banners, posters and brochures. Approximately 303 activities were organized across Pakistan with the support of the following partner (universities/colleges/schools). Different activities conducted during the WSW-2015 enlisted below:

The highlight of 2015 was that Pakistan secured First Position at the international level in terms of holding highest number of events (303) during WSW-2015 celebration according to the announcement of Word Space Week Association. Out of a total of 1877 events organized by 73 countries across the world, Pakistan alone organized 303 events and Stood First.Secondly, institutions like IST – Islamabad and Govt. Higher Secondary School (Boys & Girls) – Umerkot contributed immensely by organizing largest number of competitions/events simultaneously during one week, for school, college and university students. In addition, there were certain new activities which were introduced at Karachi station during WSW 2015. Some of these new activities are enlisted below:-

How to plan WSW event/activity?

Stages for conducting the event/activity:

Organizations, universities, colleges and schools can participate in the global celebration of World Space Week by holding an event or activity during October 4-10. By doing so, one would leverage the public and media attention surrounding the largest annual public space event on Earth.Activities can be planned as mentioned below:

Phase 1: Pre event planning Schedule space-related activities for 4-10 October timeframe.  Different activities and programs

can be planned for the public, decision makers, teachers and students (as mentioned on page -7) Identify list of educational institutes/entities/schools that will be interested to participate in

activities. Send invitation letter to education entities for participation Provide reading and preparatory material to the participating entities (like quiz booklets,

declamation topics, rules of competition, details of activities etc) Enter your event or activity details to the global calendar of WSW website at

www.worldspaceweek.org Use the World Space Week name and logo into your publicity materials Approach media and identify promotion means for your event or activity

Phase 2: Execution During the event, take pictures, estimate attendance, and note all media coverage Issue press release

Phase 3: Post event review/ evaluation

After the event, add to your existing calendar listing a brief report, attendance, and media impressions. Submit your best pictures for the World Space Week Report to WSWA coordinator

Chapter: 3 Collaboration with SUPARCO to jointly organize WSW

Collaboration with SUPARCO to jointly organize WSW

Collaboration for complete event or activityInterested organizations, entities, schools, colleges and universities can collaborate with SUPARCO to organize WSW. Collaboration could be for celebration of entire WSW week (4-10 Oct) or some of the activities.The following are some as guidelines:

Submit Event Information Form through emailed or post to WSW coordinator at SUPARCO. Nominate a focal person, who will be representing your organization. Mention details of funding requirement from SUPARCO. List of promotional material (like: WSW brochure, SUPARCO models, satellite imagery and items

related to SUPARCO stall) required for your activity/event. Upon acceptance of the proposal by SUPARCO an MoU will be signed between SUPARCO and

your organization.

Responsibilities of collaborating instituteThe collaborating institute is responsible for the following actions:

Chapter: 4 Rules for Competitions Related to WSW

QUIZ COMPETITION & SPACE MATHEMATICA

General Instructions:A team shall comprise only 2 students from each school.

Students of class 9th and 10th can participate in the competition.

Maximum of 3 participants and 2 accompanying teachers from each school shall be allowed.

General Rules

Questions shall be asked from the “Space Information Booklet” which has been uploaded on SUPARCO website. It has been sent by courier to Govt. Schools.

60% questions shall be asked from the “Space Information Booklet" and 40% questions shall be asked on the theme related to WSW and elementary mathematics.

Multiple Choice Questions with four options shall be asked.

Rules shall be read out before each round.

Answer should be given only after the question options have be read out.

Correct answer shall only be accepted if answered within the given time limit (before the buzzer rings).

Questions shall be asked twice.

All questions are to be answered except in the Tie Breaker.

Teams shall disqualify in the following situations:

Fails to come on the first day

BILINGUAL DECLAMATION CONTEST

General Instructions: Competition shall be in Urdu and English languages.

Topic of the competition for preliminary and final rounds will be based on each year’s WSW theme and will be announced on SUPARCO’s website.

Students of Class 8, 9 and 10 are eligible to participate in this competition.

One student can participate from one school for each category (English & Urdu)

Time allowed for speech shall be 5 minutes, after which first bell shall ring. Another 30 seconds shall be allowed to the speaker to wind-up the speech. After which one mark shall be deducted for every 10 seconds

Registration for participating students shall be done on first-come-first-served basis. A total of 20 students will be selected in each category (English & Urdu) after which the registration process shall be closed

Guidelines for participants

Content of the speech should be relevant to the topic of the contest.

Speak at normal volume, but clearly and distinctly.

Avoid hyperbole, verbosity and high sounding words. The tone and language should be relevant to the audience.

Speech should convey a sense of enthusiasm for the subject.

Occasionally alter the speed, volume and tone of your delivery. Speaking slower or faster and quieter or louder and being more cheerful or more serious.

Regularly sweep your eyes left-centre-right and back and front-middle-rear and back, so that you engage all members of your audience.

You should speak such that you communicate with the audience. It is good to use your hands expressively – but do not wave your arms around. Always take care of the allotted time and divide judicially the allotted time of five minutes to all

parts of your speech. Inappropriate, abusive or slang language, or offensive remarks against any political party/sect

etc. shall not be tolerated.

MODEL MAKING COMPETITION

General Instructions: A team shall comprise only 02 students and 01 teacher from each school.

Only two students & one coordinating teacher are allowed to present the model.

One model from each school shall be considered

Maximum Dimensions of the model are length = 3 ft., width = 3 ft., height = 4 ft.

WSW theme for the year should be incorporated in the models.

Models should be placed on the stipulated place at least 2 hrs before the event.

Space for pace models shall be accommodated on is limited on first-come-first-served basis.

Model size limitation must be strictly followed.

In case of electricity requirement, please intimate the contact person.

POSTER MAKING

Rules:

Drawing / painting must be on paper of A3 size (297 x 420 mm) or A2 size (420 x 594 mm).

Acceptable tools of drawing / painting include pencil, crayon, water color, oil paint, computer drawing, etc

Photographs, wires, and other 3D objects are not acceptable. The completed artwork must be on a flat piece of paper.

The drawing / painting must not include words, national flags, or slogans.

The drawing / painting must not represent any particular individual, organization, or brand name and must not depict any religious theme.

Name and age of participant as well as school’s name and address must be clearly mentioned on the back of poster in the English Language.

The given theme should be the main focus of the poster.

No text (including theme title, name, etc) should be written on the front of the poster.

General Instruction: Entry submission form should be submitted along with the poster. Form is appended below.

Each school can submit up to three posters, of which one poster would be selected by SUPARCO for competition.

A poster should be an individual effort of a child.

All posters submitted for competition shall become the property of SUPARCO.

Winning posters may be sent for international poster competition.

Note: The rules stated are provided by Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF and are subject to change and revision by APRSAF. ). If an entity wishes to compete internationally these rules are to be followed.

WATER ROCKET COMPETITION

General Instructions:

Water Rocket Teachers’ Training Workshop is conducted before competition in which all the relevant material including a CD and manual/leaflet for construction of Water Rocket is distributed.

Students will design water rockets which meet specific construction and launch criteria.

School students aged between 11 and 15 years are eligible to complete. Competitors should be selected based not only on their performance in launching water rockets but also their desire for acquiring knowledge and learning innovative concepts of science and space. The students shall be accompanied by academic teachers or those looking after youth activities in schools. The accompanying teachers should preferably the interested in space and science education, willing to engage in the exchange of knowledge, experience and skills with other educational institutions, and are committed to promoting space and science education activities among young people in their school.

SUPARCO will provide material to make and launch water rockets. Competitors will construct their water rockets at the venue. Specified launcher and nozzle assembly will be used for the competition. Pre-made materials, rockets or launchers brought in by participants will not be allowed for the competition.

Each competitor has to make two (02) rockets for the competition. Each student will receive the following Water Rocket making kit:

The competitors are encouraged to be creative in the design of the nose cones and fins of their water rockets.

Each competitor will be given one nozzle which he / she will return to SUPARCO along with the Water Rocket making kit.

The launch aims at precision of flight of the rocket. Target will be placed with the centre 80 m from the launcher.

The rocket that lands closest to the target centre gets the best score. (See diagram below). Any rocket that lands outside a radius of 7m will be declared Out Of Range.

At the time of launch, each competitor may adjust the volume of water, air pressure, launch angle and launch direction. There is no limit on water volume but air pressure must not exceed 75psi (5 bars).

Each competitor will be given an opportunity to conduct one (1) test launch prior to the competition.

During the competition, each competitor will be given opportunity to conduct two (2) launches. Exact distance from the point of impact to the centre of target will be measured. The result of the best launch will be recorded.

There will be three (3) launchers, and the competitor will launch one (1) rocket at a time. The other 2 competitors can prepare their rockets and wait for their turn. The organizer will provide the launchers to the competitors for each of their launches.

In order to reduce the possibility of error, the competitors will be assigned specific launchers. They can practice with the assigned launchers during the test launching.

The competitor who achieves the highest score, i.e. closet to the center of the target after 2 launches will be declared the winner of the Launch Competition.

In case of a draw, the second launch will be taken into consideration to determine the winner between the two competitors.

Note: Water Rocket competition rules are provided by Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF). If an entity wishes to compete internationally these rules are to be followed.

AERO MODELING

General Instructions Only one team consisting of four members is allowed from each institute. Team should comprise students either up to O-level / Matric students or FA/FSc/A-level students. Each team will be provided with a beginner’s level model airplane kit which they will have to

assemble within allocated time period. An introductory / training session will be held at the start of competition in which students would

be given demonstration of kit assembling. Limited entries are available for Aero Modeling Competition; teams will be registered on first-

come-first served basis.

MULTIROTOR AERIAL ROBOTICS CONTEST (MARC)

General InstructionsMultirotor Aerial Robotics Contest is the first national competition of VTOL (Vertical take-off and landing) based aerial vehicles. This contest is a part of World Space week to be organized by Pakistan’s national space agency Space and Upper Atmospheric Research Commission.

This contest is planned to promote research in aerial robotics and related fields in Pakistan. We from SUPARCO welcome you all to participate in first Multirotor Aerial Robotics Contest.

The theme of MARC is to design Multirotor based aerial vehicle with vertical takeoff and landing. Any Multirotor configuration (quad, hexa, octa, etc) will be displayed and fly by user, according to pre-defined plan.

Contest Area:

Contest arena is an open ground (PAF museum or SUPARCO HQs) The take-off and landing pad will be wooden(lasani) Landing pad area is 2000x2000 cm.sq Maximum altitude allowed 30m Maximum area for flight is 50x60 m.sq

System Rules:

SPACE IN QURAN- QIRAAT COMPETITION

General Instructions

1. All participants will be tested on the basis of Tarteel/Tajweed rules.

2. Only space related Quranic verses uploaded on SUPARCO website will be recited.

3. The pace of recitation must neither be fast nor slow, but moderate.

4. Competitors must bear in mind that they are not competing for worldly benefits but only for the pleasure of Allah.

5. For additional help, it is always good to practice with a good recite or Qari.

SPACE PERFORMING ARTS- SPACE THEATRE COMPETITION

General Instructions

1) The theme of WSW has to be incorporated in the performance.2) The qualifying institutions will be informed via telephone call/ e-mail about their selection in

Round 1 and will be asked to prepare their performance for perusal by respective Event Organizers.

3) For Round 1: All institutions will be informed to prepare their teams for audition at their own institution, the Event Organizers will visit each of the ten institutions and judge the performances and compile a result sheet.

4) Five teams will qualify for Round 2 and will be notified via telephone call/ email.5) The time duration for the final performance is max. 15 min. failing to conform by the time limit

will result in deduction of score.6) All relevant props, costumes, etc. are to be brought by the participating teams.7) The final round will take place in Space Fair. 8) Selected five teams will perform in Round 2 and best 3 will be awarded the 1 st, 2nd and 3rd

positions. Rest of the teams will be acknowledged. 9) No performance/script must be aimed at defaming any religion/sect/personality nor be there any

form of obscenity/vulgarity. The decorum of the event should be followed at all times in true spirit.

For Schools:

Lectures on GNSS and its Applications are conducted for School students and teachers. Each School can send max 3 students and one teacher for this event. Only participating students are allowed to enter.

Rules for Painting competition

A painting competition will be held after the lectures on the topic given by the activity in charge.

The group of students from each school will be given exactly one hour for this activity, after which the judges will decide the winning school.

Crayons, color pencils, stationary and A3 sheet will be provided. The students are not allowed to bring their own stationary.

One group can only submit one painting.

School staff may help/critique but may not participate in the competition.

The organization reserves the right to disqualify incomplete, altered or ineligible entries.

For Universities:

Lectures on GNSS and its Applications are conducted for School students and teachers. Each university can send max 3 students and one teacher for this event. Documentary competition video must be burned on CD/DVD Only participating students are allowed enter.

Rules for Making Documentary

A 5-10 min documentary/ short film on the title given by the activity in charge may be submitted by an individual or a group of no more than 3 students to participate in this competition.

One group can only submit one documentary, but one university may have more than one groups.

End credits do not count towards the time limit and all credits and sources may also be provided separately.

Each documentary should start with a 3 sec blank screen and end with a 5 sec by-line: “A documentary for World Space Week (SUPARCO)”

Limited use of copyright material will be permitted as long as it is ‘fair’ and ‘legal’ and does not overwhelm the participant’s contribution.

School staff may help/critique but may not participate in the competition. The documentary can be copied on a CD/DVD and sent to us via post. The winning team will receive a cash prize. The organization reserves the right to disqualify incomplete, altered or ineligible entries

E-POSTER DESIGNING COMPETITION

The theme of WSW has to be incorporated in the posters. MS Paint, Adobe Photoshop and Corel Draw software will be provided to the students. Standard images will be provided. No Internet input to computer facility will be provided. Time allowed will be 1 hour and 30 minutes. Only one participant is allowed to participate from each institution.

Can WSW activities be organized on any other dates?The UN has declared that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. Events that are organized other than these dates are not generally considered as part of WSW.

After conducting events/activities, is it necessary to enter reports/results and media impressions on WSW global calendar?Yes, this will help to ensure that the size and impact of World Space Week events of Pakistan is both complete and accurate.

What is meant by reports and attendance on WSW global calendar?Report is the brief summary regarding the event and attendance is the estimated number of people who attended an event. 

What is media impression?Media impressions are the estimated viewers/readers of media coverage of an event (such as TV, newspapers, and web sites), and should be obtained from each media organization or web site.  Media covering multiple events should only be reported for one event to avoid duplicate counting.Can I conduct any activity other than the ones listed?Yes, any creative idea is welcome but its theme should pertain to World Space Week only.

Who are focal persons?Focal persons are the nominated officials of SUPARCO and the other entity, between which collaboration will be done. All communication and coordination of both the parties will be done by them.

How can a school register for WSW competitions via SUPARCO website?Schools can register online through SUPARCO’s website (www.suparco.gov.pk). Detailed competition plan for each station is given on the World Space Week web page. By clicking on “new registration” link under the concerned station tab, schools could access form in which it should provide all the necessary details of the participating students and school. While registering for competitions, schools have to adhere to the deadline date mentioned.
