Organisational Development Meetings This year I reported to the Junior and Senior delegates meetings monthly. These were held on the first Monday of the month, commencing in February. At these meetings we discussed upcoming events, including coaching clinics, umpiring sessions and the school program. We discussed how to conduct these, and I often asked the committee for ideas when organising clinics. We also discussed ways we can improve the standard of hockey within the Association. I report to the committee the work that I was doing at the schools in the region. We discussed ways to improve the sessions to encourage the children to start playing hockey. We discuss ways to provide additional fundraising for the current and future years.

Risk Management The Association continues to expand its risk management policies and procedures by promoting the working with children policies to all coaches, managers and transport drivers that are involved with juniors.

Development plan The Executive of the Upper Great Southern Hockey Association with the Hockey Development Officer held a series of meetings to discuss further adaptations to the development plan of the Associations. We have revised the Development plan for the 2019 to 2022 seasons.

Participation School program During 2019 I visited twelve Primary Schools through the Upper Great Southern Region. Visiting these schools provided me with an opportunity to promote hockey and the Smarter than Smoking message. It was great to be able to have a uniform promoting hockey and the Smarter than Smoking message. I was able to visit most schools two times and coach school children from years 1 to 6. This year I worked with the Central Great Southern Hockey Associations that are along our Associations boundary to incorporate them into our school’s program. I visited eight schools, each of these schools received 1 visit per school and I followed a similar plan to the UGSHA school activity. The schools I visited this year were: Upper Great Southern Hockey Association Brookton Primary School Dumbleyung Primary School East Narrogin Primary School Darkan Primary School Lake Yealering Primary School Narrogin Primary School Pingelly Primary School Saint Matthews Primary School Wagin District High School Wandering Primary School Wickepin Primary school Williams Primary School Central great Southern Hockey Association Braeside Primary School Broomehill Primary School Katanning Primary School Katanning Senior High School Kojonup District High School Saint Bernard’s Primary School Saint Patricks Primary School Woodanilling Primary School This is a total of 20 Primary Schools visited with a total of 1866 school children experiencing the sport of hockey this year. This also included Lake King which I visited to help conduct a have a go day which involved several primary in their region. They were Lake King, Ravensthorpe, Newdegate, Hopetoun and Jerdacuttup. When constructing a lesson plan for these schools, I had to take into account that some of the students had never played hockey before, whilst others had played some form of hockey. Below is my standard lesson structure

• Introduction-Introduce myself as the Smarter than Smarter Upper Great Southern Hockey Development Officer with a small explanation about myself. I also talk about safety aspects of hockey.

• Introduce new skill (dribbling, pushing or hitting). This was done in the form of a simple game. This was varied to each classes ability and age. In pairs or teams worked together to improve skill.

To end a session, I would do a game type situation or have competition to see who could do their skill the best. The final session would see me playing a modified version of dog and bone where I would have two teams each with hockey balls. This stops anyone from getting injured by swinging sticks. The students enjoyed this game and it sometimes ran over time. In each lesson I would give out merchandise to students who would complete a task to their best ability. The schools program is a major part of my contract and the school response to my visit were of compliments and enjoyment. It was interesting to have students see me outside of school and say “Hi” to me, even if I didn’t recognize them straight away. To me this is a good indication that the children enjoyed my visits.

Hooked in2 Hockey Hooked in2 Hockey is a program designed by Hockey Australia to introduce hockey to new players. Hooked in2 hockey was has been in Narrogin for many years with myself organising 10 sessions throughout the season. There were 22 children registered in the Narrogin program. Towns outside of Narrogin held their own Hook in2 Hockey program with Wagin having 14 children, Brookton having 7 children and Pingelly having 21 children. They were taught the basics of hockey with different games to end each session. The groups were made up in different ways; in Narrogin, we have two groups. The development group was for more advanced children and preparing to play in our Primary School competition next year. This group commenced with basic skills each week and finished with a game. The basic group was for the newer children and this was to aid them in their development of skills. This way next year they can go up a level. They were taught the very basic skills. The coaches for both groups came from our junior upper school competition with myself overseeing the sessions.

Junior Competition The Junior structure of our competition is based on School Years. This year we added an extra competition to the Lower School. This year we had a J 7 Lower for school year 2,3 and 4 and we had a J 11 lower School for school years 4,5 and 6. The Middle school competition was for years 7, 8 and 9 and the Upper High School competition was for years 10, 11 and 12. This is a mixed competition for both boys and girls. This year’s winners were Lower School: Brookton Middle School: Pumas Upper School: Vultures

Lower School The J 7 Lower School competition was played on Saturday mornings. We had seven teams this year. The team came from Dumbleyung, Wagin, Wickepin, Williams and 4 Narrogin teams. The J 11 Lower School competition was played on Saturday mornings. We had seven teams this year. The team came from Brookton, Dumbleyung, Wagin, Williams and 4 Narrogin teams.

Players from the Triple M J 7 competition Overall the junior hockey season was very successful. The Primary School competition is a good breeding game for our higher competitions. With the splitting of this competition we saw more children play hockey with the J 7 competition a very good start for these players. The big advantage of this competition was that all players had more use of the ball therefore improving their skills. We had no winners just players. The J 11 competition saw better quality games as more players had hockey experience.

Narrogin Senior High School Hockey Academy The Narrogin Senior High School Academy is an Academy that was set up to provide an opportunity for students from years 7-10 to learn more about hockey and the different aspects of the game. The students can learn different aspects of the game such as umpiring, coaching, game theory and an introduction to sports injury management and fitness. The students train at the Narrogin hockey turf so they are improving their turf skill in a practical lesson. There are 90 students involved in this program between the four-year groups. This year I helped the academy with there umpiring aspect of the game by giving several talks to the students. The High School also conducted a in house hockey carnival which I assisted with on the day with fixturing and umpiring.

Coaching Clinics

Toni Cronk Goalkeeping Clinic This year we held two goalkeeping clinics during the season. They were held on the 9th of March and 18th August with Toni Cronk (Former Hockeyroos Goalkeeper) taking them. They put the young Goalkeepers through their paces. I had 11 goalkeepers attend. They were taught the basics goalkeeping skill through to advance skills. All goalkeepers have improved their skills during the season and enjoyed the experience..

YMCC annual Women’s Development Pathway Camp On the weekend of October 5-7, YMCC held their 2nd annual Women’s Development Pathway Camp in Narrogin. The camp featured high intensity training, with the program being developed by Kevin Knapp. Girls from YMCC, Collie HA, Eastern Goldfields HA, Esperance HA, Lower Great Southern HA and Upper Great Southern HA took part, and coaches from YMCC, including Kevin Knapp and ex-Kookaburra Jeremy Hiskins, led drills focussing on skill development. The girls had a fantastic time and learnt a lot, going home very tired. A huge thanks to our coaches, without whom the Camp wouldn’t happen.

Umpires Clinic

The Hockey Ed program developed by Hockey Australia provided the Association with the pathway to improve umpiring across the Upper Great Southern Region I continued with the Flexitrans Green Shirt program in the Junior Competition. Through this the Association supplied umpires for every Junior game on the turf. I had 26 junior players and 12 senior players participate this program. A part of this program was they had to attend regular sessions. We advertised these clinics through the radio and flyers. A part of the program was being able to get a Hockey WA qualified umpire in Reece Young to come to Narrogin and run a clinic and assess local umpires. I found this to be a great success. Through the program we could send good quality umpires to all carnival that the UGSHA attended. This year I had a sponsor stay on board to held run the program in Flexitrans. This is a local company whose family has been involved in hockey for many years.

Special Features International Friendly Game UGSHA vs Sri Lanka Masters On Sunday 1st of September we had the Sri Lanka Master Women team visit Narrogin. They stay with billets on Saturday and learnt some of you culture and saw some local wildlife and farming activities. On Sunday they played a game against the UGSHA Master team. In a very friendly game which saw UGSHA win 3 – 0. The score was not what it was about but the friendship and comradery that was gain by all. This is hopefully something the Association will do more often in future years. It was interesting in learning what some of the ladies had to go through just to get here.

Media The local radio station Triple M and I were involved in a very good working partnership. Every Monday, I would have a hockey segment that would go for five minutes. On these segments, I could talk about the previous week’s results also any news in the Association, from clinics to State representatives or carnivals. It was a good segment for the promotion of hockey for not only hockey players but to the public. Tripe M also did an outside broadcast this year at the Junior carnival. They commenced at 2pm and concluded at 5pm. This was a change of ideas to encourage more people to attend the junior carnival. Anyone who heard the broadcast was very impressed with it. The Narrogin Observer is our local papers, this was also very popular with the hockey players. Every week of the season we could have our results published with an article about the happenings in the Association. On many occasions, we also had a photo accompanying the article. We also could have several advertisements which promoted clinics and special games.
