Warm Up: Dribbling

Players form 4 lines. Starting with the ball in their right hand they dribble to foul-line extended area and cross over to their left. They dribble to half-court with their left and cross over to their right. They repeat this at the foul-line extended at the opposite end and at the end of the court. The perform the same task coming back. They perform each dribble twice: Cross Over, Spin Move and Behind the Back.

Warm Up: Outlet/Lay-Up

Players form two lines. One underneath the basket and one at half court. The drill is started with the player by the basket throwing the ball off the backboard and rebounding. (Strong with two hands). The player at half-court is to come back to the ball for the outlet pass. The recipient of the outlet pass takes the ball the full length of the floor for a full court lay-up. The rebounder is the trailer. If the shot is made he rebounds the ball out-of-bounds QUICKLY and starts the fast break the other way. If the shot is not made he rebounds and puts ball back in the basket. This is done twice on each side of the floor.

Warm Up: Outlet/Corner

Players form two lines. One underneath the basket and one at half court. The drill is started with the player by the basket throwing the ball off the backboard and rebounding. (Strong with two hands). The player at half-court is to come back to the ball for the outlet pass. The recipient of the outlet pass takes the ball to the corner and the rebounder fills the trailing lane getting the pass and making the lay-up. The scorer rebounds and looks to make the outlet pass going back the other way. This is done twice before switching to the other side of the floor.

3-on-2/2-on-1

Players form three lines under the basket. The center line gets the ball. Two defensive players are stationed at the other end of the floor in an “I” position. The three players come down the floor with the ball using the pass versus the dribble. Offense’s goal is to score. Defense needs to stop the score. The man at the top of the “I” stops the ball/penetration and forces a pass.

Page 5: Warm Up: Dribbling

The man at the top of the “I” stops the ball/penetration and forces a pass. The bottom of the “I” goes to play the pass and the top of the “I” rotates down into the help position to protect the basket. This sequence continues until the basket has been made or the defense gets the ball.

3-on-2/2-on-1

3-on-2/2-on-1

The offensive player who was in the middle and brought the ball up then returns back on defense to defend a two-on-one fastbreak.

The two offensive players who were filling the wing lanes now become the defensive “I”.

Coaching Keys:

-Offense: Use the pass, go the basket, follow your shot, screen

-Defense: Helpside rotation, blocking out, stopping the ball & penetration

Page 7: Warm Up: Dribbling

4-on-2/4-on-3

The offensive players are placed on the perimeter of the key with the ball. The defensive players have their hands behind their back and can only move their feet. The offensive players are to move the ball around the perimeter passing from player to player. Offense can bounce pass, chest pass, skip pass over the top, and can fake dribble penetration, but can penetrate. Defense has to react to the ball preventing penetration, trying to intercept a pass by getting their body or feet in the passing lane. They must rotate properly to prevent these things from happening. Should the defense steal the ball, offense runs a sprint. This starts with 4 on two and move to two on three.

Page 8: Warm Up: Dribbling

5-on-5 Box Out

Five offensive players and five defensive players. The coach shoots the ball and the defensive players need to find their man, box them out, and then get the ball.

Defense must be in help side defensive position.

If the offensive team gets the ball the defense runs a sprint.

This goes on until coach blows a whistle to end the drill. Then offense goes on defense, defense either goes on offense or if there are enough players on the side line, a new five come in on offense and the defense gets a rest.

Passing Circle

One passer gets in the middle of the other 11 players. The passer starts with a ball and then one of the 11 starts with a ball. The passer passes the ball to the person to the right of the other player with the ball. As he releases the ball, the player with the ball passes to the passer. The passer works all the way around the circle twice.

The player who drops the ball the most runs a sprint.

Screen Defense

There are three players on offense and three players on defense. The offensive player with the ball dribbles either right or left. One of the post men sets a screen for the offensive player to cut off of. Defensively, the ball defender needs to try and step over the screen, while the post defender hedges and stops dribble penetration. The offensive post player rolls to the basket it. Helpside defense needs to react.

When the ball is stopped the dribbler starts over again at the top. This continues until the coach blows the whistle and then offense and defense switches.

Carolina Offense

The offense begins when the point guard brings the ball over half-court. As soon as that happens the two post players turn and screen down for the guards. The two guards pop-out to foul-line extended.

Keys/Options:

• 4/5 can also pop out to foul line extended to mix things up

• 2/3 can criss-cross on baseline to foul line extended

Carolina Offense

As the 2 & 3 pop out to foul line extended. The 1 passes to the open wing and screens away.

The screened for guard, cuts off the screen toward the foul line.

The 4 & 5 players pop out to the corners.

Carolina Offense

The 3 player now has two options once he has received the ball:

1. He can pass to 5 in the corner and cut to the basket looking for a pass and lay-up. (If he doesn’t get the ball he cuts across the lane and screens for the 4)

2. He can pass to the opposite wing coming off the screen if he is open.

Carolina Offense

If 5 receives the pass down in the corner, he takes a couple of dribble toward foul line extended to gain a better passing lane to the 4 coming across the lane for a post pass.

Carolina Offense

If nothing is open the ball is reversed and the same pattern is run through on the other side.

• 5 passes to 2.

• 2 reverses to 1 (1 and 3 could exchange to get an open pass)

• 3 pops to the corner.

• 1 passes to 3 and cuts through looking for lay-up pass.

Half-Court: Iso Play

• 1 dribbles toward a wing. That wing exits the foul line extended area, and pushes the opposite wing toward the top of the key.

• 1 continues to the foul line extended position and waits for the 4 to set a solid screen for a pick&roll (1/2 court shoulder) or a ISO drive to the basket (Baseline) shoulder.

• The 5 exits the foul line area to set a “dummy” screen for the 2 who is moving toward the top of the key.
