Introduction: pharmacy practice research 2007
I am pleased to introduce this publication, where you willfind abstracts of the pharmacy practice research papers andposters presented at the 2007 British Pharmaceutical Confer-ence (BPC), held in Manchester, UK, September 10–12,2007. Abstracts have been published as an annual supplementto the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice (IJPP), asister publication of the Pharmaceutical Journal, since 2001.
As before, this supplement has been prepared in advanceof the conference, to allow participants in the practiceresearch sessions to read the abstracts in advance. This is whyyou will find on pages B3–B4 the programme for the practiceresearch sessions, even though IJPP subscribers may notreceive the supplement until after the conference.
One-hundred and eighteen abstracts were submitted for BPC2007, and this year the Society’s pharmacy practice researchpanel accepted 85 for poster or oral presentation at the confer-ence. Please note that, since the abstracts have already beenexamined by the panel, they have not passed through the peerreview process applied by the IJPP to all other contributions. The journal cannot therefore guarantee that they meet itsusual stringent requirements. The abstracts have, however, been subjected to a full editing process and, as far as possible, put into the normal IJPP editorial style.
While most abstracts are classified as Practice Research, authors can submit abstracts which describe Practice Devel-opment and Audit. Many of the abstracts contained in thesupplement fall into this category. Spread over the three daysof the conference there are, this year, five separate practiceresearch sessions for the oral presentation of accepted papers. These 30 abstracts (B7–B37) are listed in this supplement inthe order in which they appear in the programme. The remain-ing 55 abstracts are those presented as posters, beginning withPractice Research posters (pages B39–B73), followed byPractice Development and Audit posters (pages B73–B93).
This year’s prestigious Practice Research Medal (sponsoredby Chemist & Druggist) has been awarded to Mary Tully,Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester andAssociate Professor at the University of Uppsala. Her key-note lecture, entitled: ‘The prescribing process in secondarycare’ is based on her research into decision making andappropriateness in hospital prescribing, and will be deliveredon September 12 at BPC 2007. An outline of the lecture isincluded in this supplement. This research is highly relevantto the conference theme of Balancing Risks and Benefits – anactivity which is at the heart of decision making in the pre-scribing process.
