Lionel Would Have Loved It!Music legend Lionel Hampton would have appreciated the August 23rd Lionel Hampton Jazz Project. This was the third year for Lincoln Foundation’s annual fundraiser honoring Louisville’s hometown jazz great. Hampton would have also enjoyed the festive pre-concert reception featuring an appetizing array of hors
d’oeuvres, and the Brown-Forman ori-gional Bourbon and Champagne “Smooth Jazz” cocktail. First-rate performances were provided by the Jamey Aebersold Quartet and Dick Sisto’s Vibraganic Trio with Marlin McKay. Perhaps the thing Hamp would have
enjoyed the most is the reason for the evening.
Lionel Hampton believed in supporting socioeconomically disad-vantaged people. He demonstrated this by building many public housing projects during his lifetime. His passion mirrors the goals of Lincoln Foundation’s signature Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program® which annually prepares deserving youth for high school graduation and college. Several Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars served as ambassadors during the evening, providing attendees an opportunity to meet some of the fine young men and women their financial gifts support.
The annual Spirit of Excellence Award was presented to Dr.
F. Bruce Williams, Senior Pastor at Bates Memorial Baptist Church. The award is Lincoln Foundation’s most prestigious award recogniz-ing individuals in the community who exemplify an active voluntary commitment to education, human/community service, and leadership. Past recipients of the Spirit of Excellence Award include Lonnie & the late Muhammad Ali, Robert & Deborah Blair, Christina Lee Brown, Mayor Greg Fischer, Ed Hamilton, and Diane Porter.
Lincoln Foundation also wishes to thank all who attended for helping to make the evening a success. A special thank you goes to the event’s signature sponsors, specifically LG&E and KU Energy Foundation, Brown-Forman
and PNC Bank. Creative Director Dick Sisto plays the vibraphone, Hampton's signature instrument.
Jazz Master Jamey Aebersold opened the performance.

Leah Kelly: A Whitney M. YOUNG Scholar's Road to Success When Whitney M. YOUNG Scholar Leah Kelly (Class of 2015) confidently took the stage at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Project to share her experiences, members of the audience wouldn't have guessed she once considered herself to be “very shy”. Leah said that while serving as a Scholar Ambassador at a Lincoln Foundation event during high school, she suddenly realized she wanted more for her life and began learning the art of the meet and greet. “When I would hear that little voice telling me I couldn’t do it,
that I wasn’t good enough, the words of the Scholar’s Oath would come to mind,” she told the crowd. “‘I can. I must. I will be some-body.’ And that voice grew louder.”
The fifth of six children in a single-parent household, Leah’s mom signed her up for numerous opportunities designed to put
her on a path to success—including Lincoln Foundation’s Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program®. The educational enrichment opportunities offered by the Lincoln Foundation staff helped her graduate from Male High School in 2015. Her grades and academic profile qualified her to be selected as a member of the inaugural group of Grissom Scholars at Centre College. She graduated from Centre in May 2019 where she earned a B.A. in International Studies. Along the way, she interned in the Louisville Metro Government Office for Globalization, at Brown-Forman, the Department of Veteran’s Affairs in Washington, D.C., and the Association of Culture & Tourism Exchange in France.
Brown-Forman officially hired Leah earlier this year. She now works as an Alcohol Responsibility Specialist where she helps to cultivate a responsible drinking culture. Leah says she is thrilled with this first career opportunity because it is an impor-tant step toward her ultimate life goal: to be an agent of sustain-able and equitable change within communities. She also hopes to continue volunteering for Lincoln Foundation to demonstrate her appreciation for the support and encouragement she has received as a Scholar. “I will always try to help Lincoln Foundation any way I can.”

The first six months into my tenure as president of Lincoln Foundation has been both challenging and rewarding. Our dedicated staff invests countless hours delivering educational enrichment experiences for our deserving students. We are now fully immersed in another school year energized by the potential of the nearly 500 students enrolled in the Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program ®. I have enjoyed observing students fully engaged in their learning activities during their Saturday Educational Clinics. I also enjoy meeting our Scholar alumni, like Leah Kelly and learning how their time in the program has helped them realize their dreams. If you’d like to hear a firsthand account of how the Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program® benefits socioeconomically disadvantaged youth in our community, I invite you to attend the 3rd Annual Nourish YOUNG Minds Breakfast scheduled for Thursday, November 7, 2019. You will also have the opportu-nity to learn how you can play a role in helping to positively impact the lives of our deserving youth. The breakfast is free, however, reservations are required. To make a reservation, please contact Paula Campbell at 502.657.1015.
