SYMPOSIUM CHAIRMANPROF. M.DAHMANI FATHALLAH

At the genesis of this new millennium, there is consensus that the recent history of the Arabian Gulf countries has been greatly influenced by innovation. This innovation has spurred the many changes in society that this region has witnessed.

It is significant though that such innovation has been tamed so as to nurture positive changes, whether these be in health and education, business, urbanization, infrastructure and environmental issues, or in to cite but a few.

Interestingly, the success of domesticating innovation lies in the fact that all of the changes that have reshaped the region have been deeply stemming from its robust spiritual and cultural heritage.

However, it must be remembered that innovation is a continues process and requires vigilance to ensure that all innovation based changes remain constructive.

Therefore, to maintain positive progress in innovation and to connect with innovation worldwide, it is of paramount importance that stakeholders in regional innovation meet regularly with world experts to discuss the changes to society we would like to see innovation bring to lives in this region.

This symposium organized by the Arabian Gulf University is designed to fulfill this noble purpose.

I wish you many fruitful debates with the best possible outcomes.

Innovation is this nonlinear alteration, recasting and changing process which translates creativity into tangible facts and introduces societal transformations.

Though, innovation goes far beyond L. Duncan saying “Innovation is the ability

to convert ideas into invoices”. Innovation is mainly triggered by technological advances and closely follows creativity. Whether incremental or disruptive, innovation has always been the major drive of societal functions changes in many fields such as business, education, housing, health, communication and transportations. In addition to technology, innovation is influenced by a cluster of elements including, regulations, finance, market and cultural framework.

Therefore, there is an array of innovation stakeholders among which universities. To emphasize its role as an innovation stakeholder in the GCC region from an education perspective, the Arabian Gulf University has invited a number of innovation international experts and thoughts leaders to discuss in this two days symposium how innovation can lead to positive and sustainable societal changes.

The symposium will cover innovation issues spanning from the macro organizational level or the national system of innovation to three major domains where innovation plays a major role in societal transformations namely business, environment and education. Through this symposium, we would like to demonstrate to the GCC community that innovation is crucial to the continuing success of any organization and when properly governed, it can only lead to positive societal transformations.
