Welcome to the first thematic meeting of the partneruniversities of the McDonnell International ScholarsAcademy—an initiative launched by WashingtonUniversity in 2005. This International Symposium onEnergy and Environment addresses issues of globalconcern and is probably the first time anywhere inthe world that such a distinguished group of repre-sentatives of the premier universities in Asia and theMiddle East has assembled to discuss energy andenvironmental challenges. This truly promises to bea historic occasion.

We have planned a series of events that will fur-ther facilitate a core part of the Academy’s mission—promoting global connectedness and social responsi-bility. Throughout the weekend, you will hear fromkey scientific, academic, and business leaders frommany places in the world as they discuss the use ofinnovative, environmentally friendly energy resources.You will also have opportunities to connect with smallgroups of colleagues. It is our hope that the ideasgenerated at this Symposium will serve as a catalyst

for future research and collaboration as we deal withone of the most pressing problems of our planet.

The Symposium will showcase several venueson the Danforth Campus at Washington University.You will also have the opportunity to enjoy some ofthe highlights of the city of St. Louis, including theworld-famous St. Louis Gateway Arch.

The goal in proposing these five areas is to build onthe existing strengths and promote synergistic and com-plementary development of energy and environmentalprograms. In addition, ethics, economics, law, policy, and geospatial information science and technology arethemes that cut across all five research centers.

Academic Environmental ProgramsThe newly created Department of Energy, Environmentaland Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering &Applied Science has a focus on environmental engineeringscience, energy systems, and chemical engineering.

The Environmental Studies Program in Arts &Sciences offers undergraduate students an opportunity to undertake a major or minor in environmental sciencesor in societal issues associated with the environment. Theprogram is interdisciplinary, taking advantage of facultyexpertise in anthropology, biology, economics, earth andplanetary sciences, law, political science, environmentalregulation, and engineering.
