If an abnormal condi- tion occurs, the driver is informed by indicator lamp. The driver can seek service before damage occurs. GENERAL INFORMATION

INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of the dash gauges and indica tor

lamps is to keep the dr iver informed about the oper-a t ing condit ion of the vehicle. If an abnormal condi-t ion occurs, the dr iver is informed by indica tor lamp.

The dr iver can seek service before damage occurs.Indica tor lamps use ON/OFF switch funct ions for

opera t ion , while gauges use a sending unit or sensor.

NOTE: This group covers both Left-Hand Drive(LHD) and Right-Hand Drive (RHD) versions of thismodel. Whenever required and feasible, the RHDversions of affected vehicle components have beenconstructed as mirror-image of the LHD versions.While most of the illustrations used in this grouprepresent only the LHD version, the diagnostic andservice procedures outlined can generally beapplied to either version. Exceptions to this rulehave been clearly identified as LHD, RHD, or Exportif a special illustration or procedure is required.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

DOMELAMPThe Dome Lamp opera tes when a door is open or

when the headlamp switch is placed in cour tesy posi-t ion .

ELECTRONICDIGITAL CLOCKThe elect ron ic digita l clock is in the radio. The

clock and radio each use the display panel built in tothe radio. A digita l readout indica tes the t ime inhours and minutes whenever the ignit ion switch is inthe ON or ACC posit ion .When the ignit ion switch is in the OFF posit ion , or

when the radio frequency is being displayed, t imekeeping is accura tely main ta ined.The procedure for set t ing the clock var ies sligh t ly

with each radio. The cor rect procedure is descr ibed inthe individua l radio opera t ing inst ruct ions. Refer tothe Owner’s Manual supplied with the vehicle.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTERThere are two convent iona l inst rument cluster

assemblies ava ilable. The clusters elect ron ica lly dr ivethe speedometer, odometer, and gauges (Fig. 1) and(Fig. 2).

GAUGESAll gauges in the elect ron ic clusters a re the ana log

type gauges. When the ignit ion switch is moved tothe OFF posit ion , the cluster dr ives each gauge to it slowest posit ion .

WARNINGAND INDICATOR LAMPSThe inst rument cluster has warn ing lamps and

indica tors for the following systems:• Airbag• Ant i-lock Brakes (ABS) if equipped• Brake warning• Charging System• Door Ajar• High beam indica tor• Low oil pressure• Malfunct ion indica tor (check engine) lamp• Right and left tu rn signa ls.• Seat belt warn ing

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

AIRBAGWARNINGSYSTEMFor test ing of th is system refer to Group 8M,

Rest ra in t Systems.

BRAKESYSTEM WARNINGLAMP TESTThe brake warning lamp illumina tes when the

parking brake is applied with ignit ion switch turnedto the ON posit ion . The same lamp will a lso illumi-na te if one of the two service brake systems fa il thewhen brake peda l is applied.

To test the system:• As the ignit ion switch is turned to the sta r t posi-

t ion the lamp should ligh t .• Turn ignit ion switch to the ON posit ion and

apply the parking brake. The lamp should ligh t .

I f lamp fails to light inspect for:• A burned out lamp• Loose, cor roded or damaged socket• A damaged circu it board• A broken or disconnected wire a t the switch• Defect ive switchTo test the service brake warning system, refer to

Group 5, Brakes, Hydraulic System Cont rol Valves.

FOGLAMP SWITCH TEST(1) Remove the fog lamp switch . Refer to the Rear

Window Defogger and/or Fog Lamp Switch Removal.(2) Using two jumper wires, connect P in 2 and Pin

4 of the switch to ba t tery voltage.(3) Using a test lamp, connect the test lamp to Pin

3 as shown in (Fig. 3). Refer to (Fig. 4) for fog lampswitch circu it .(4) Push the fog lamp switch but ton . The test lamp

and the LED indica tor on the front of the switchshould illumina te.(5) If either the LED or the test lamp fa ils to illu -

mina te, replace the switch .

FOGLAMP SWITCH TEST EXPORTRefer to Group 8W, Wir ing Diagrams for wir ing or

circu it in format ion .

FRONT EXPORT(1) Remove the fog lamp switch and disconnect the

connector a t the center stack.(2) Using two jumper wires connect P in L7 to ba t -

tery voltage, and connect P in Z03 to ground (Fig. 5).

(3) Push the fog lamp switch but ton . The LEDindica tor on the front of the switch should illumina te.Check Pin L35 with a test lamp for ba t tery voltage.(4) If either the LED or the test lamp fa ils to illu -

mina te, replace the switch .

REAR EXPORT(1) Remove the fog lamp switch . Refer to Rear

Window Defogger and/or Fog Lamp Switch Removal.(2) Using two jumper wires connect P in 2 and Pin

4 of the switch to ba t tery voltage.(3) Using a test lamp, connect the test lamp to Pin

3 as shown in (Fig. 6). Refer to Group 8W, Wir ingDiagrams for fog lamp switch circu it .(4) Push the fog lamp switch but ton . The test lamp

should illumina te, and the LED indica tor on thefront of the switch .(5) If either the LED, or the test lamp fa ils to illu -

mina te, replace the switch .

FUEL TANKSENDINGUNIT TESTRefer to Group 14, Fuel for test procedures.

HEADLAMP LEVELINGSWITCH(1) Remove the headlamp leveling switch from the

inst rument panel and disconnect the wire harnessconnector from the switch . Refer to Wir ing Diagramsfor the proper wire circu it s and the wire connectorconnect ions.

(2) If the L.E.D. is not illumina ted, using a voltme-ter, connect B+ lead to Pin 4 of the Wire harness con-nector. Connect the nega t ive lead to Pin 3. Turn ONthe headlamp switch to the low beam posit ion andensure the inst rument panel dimmer switch is onday ligh t dr iving posit ion . If voltage is presen t ,replace switch . If no voltage, connect the ground leadto a good ground, if voltage, repa ir P in 3 ground cir-cu it as necessary, and if no voltage, refer to Wir ingDiagrams and test circu it back to headlamp switch .(3) Using a voltmeter, connect B+ lead to Pin 2 of

the Wire harness connector. Connect the nega t ivelead to Pin 3. Turn ON the headlamp switch to thelow beam posit ion . If ba t tery voltage, go to Step 5. Ifnot OK, go to Step 4.(4) Connect the ground lead to a good ground, if no

voltage, refer to Wir ing Diagrams and test circu itback to headlamp switch . If ba t tery voltage, repa irP in 3 ground circu it as necessary.(5) Turn headlamps OFF. Connect the wire har-

ness connector to the headlamp leveling switch . TurnON the headlamp switch to the low beam posit ion .Check voltage a t P in 5, while rota t ing the headlampleveling switch knob through the four posit ions. Thevoltage reading should change as the switch isrota ted to each posit ion . If the voltage does not varyreplace switch . If OK, test the headlamp levelingmotors and/or circu it to the motors.

HEADLAMP SWITCH TEST(1) Remove the headlamp switch . Refer to Head-

lamp Switch Removal.

(2) Use a ohmmeter, and check cont inu ity betweenthe termina ls of the switch as shown in the Head-lamp Switch Test (F ig. 8).

HEATER A/CBLOWER SWITCH TEST(1) Remove Heater A/C cont rol module. Refer to

Heater A/C Cont rol Removal procedures.(2) Use a ohmmeter, and check cont inu ity between

the termina ls of the switch as shown in the BlowerSwitch Test (F ig. 9).(3) If the switch fa ils any par t of the cont inu ity

test , other then Pin 1 to Pin 7, replace Heater A/CCont rol. If no cont inu ity between Pin 1 to Pin 7check the lamps, replace if necessary.

HEATER BLOWER SWITCH TEST(1) Remove hea ter cont rol, refer to A/C Heater

Cont rol Removal.(2) Use a ohmmeter, and check cont inu ity between

the termina ls of the switch as shown in the HeaterBlower Test (F ig. 10).(3) If switch fa ils any par t of the cont inu ity test ,

other then Pin 1 to Pin 7, replace hea ter cont rol. Ifno cont inu ity between Pin 1 to Pin 7 check thelamps, replace if necessary.Fig. 7 Headlamp Leveling Switch Circuit Diagram

CAUTION: Disconnect the battery negative cablebefore servicing the instrument panel or compo-nents. When power is required for test purposes,connect battery cable for test only. Disconnect thebattery negative cable after test and before continu-ing service procedures.

LOWOIL PRESSUREWARNINGLAMP TESTThe low oil pressure warn ing lamp will illumina te

when the ignit ion switch is turned to the ON posit ionwithout engine running. The lamp also illumina tes if

the engine oil pressure drops below a safe oil pres-sure level.To test the system, turn the ignit ion switch to the

ON posit ion . If the lamp fa ils to ligh t , inspect for abroken or disconnected wire a t the oil pressureswitch , loca ted a t the front of the engine (Fig. 11). Ifthe wire a t the connector checks good, pull the con-nector loose from the switch and with a jumper wire,ground the connector to the engine. With the ignit ionswitch turned to the ON posit ion , check the warn inglamp. If the lamp st ill fa ils to ligh t , inspect for aburned out lamp or disconnected socket in the clus-ter .

MULTIPLEGAUGE INOPERATIVETESTTest speedometer, tachometer and other gauges for

malfunct ion :(1) Remove the cluster. Refer to Cluster Removal

and Insta lla t ion .(2) Check for ign it ion voltage a t P in J 1-5 of the

cluster wire harness connector (F ig. 12) and (Fig. 13).

Check for ba t tery voltage a t P in J 1-6 of the connec-tor. If no voltage, repa ir as necessary.(3) Check Pin J 1-8 of the connector for cont inu ity

to ground. If no ground, repa ir as necessary.(4) If the voltage and ground are OK, and the pins

or the connectors are not distor ted, replace thepr in ted circu it board.(5) Insta ll cluster .

INDIVIDUAL GAUGE INOPERATIVE

FUEL GAUGE(1) Disconnect the fuel gauge sending unit .(2) Turn the ignit ion switch to the ON posit ion .

The fuel gauge should be a t it s lowest posit ion . Turnthe ignit ion switch OFF.(3) Ground fuel gauge sending unit connector Pin

3. Refer to Group 8W, Wir ing Diagrams. Turn igni-t ion switch to the ON posit ion . The fuel gauge shouldbe a t it s h ighest posit ion . Turn ignit ion switch OFFthen ON, after a sending unit signa l change to dis-able the cluster elect ron ic gauge dampening mecha-n ism.

(a ) If OK, check the fuel gauge sending unit con-nector for proper connect ion . If the connect ions areOK, refer to Group 14 Fuel System for Fuel LevelSensor Diagnosis.(b) If not OK, connect the sending unit . Remove

the cluster and check for an open or shor t in thesending unit wir ing. The sending unit will be lessthan 1080 ohms and grea ter than 50 ohms depend-ing upon fuel level. If the sending unit wir ing isopen or a shor t circu it , repa ir as necessary.(c) If the sending unit wir ing is OK, replace the

gauge assembly. If the condit ion persist s, replacethe cluster pr in ted circu it board.

FUEL GAUGE INCORRECTLY INDICATESEMPTYThe fuel system uses both the inst rument cluster

and the Power t ra in Cont rol Module (PCM) to moni-tor the fuel level sending unit . If the PCM fuel mon-itor ing circu it s senses an open circu it , the increasedcircu it resistance will causes a fa lse fuel gauge emptyreading. Check for cont inu ity between cluster wireharness connector Pin J 2-10 and Pin 23 of the PCM(Fig. 12) and (Fig. 14). If there is no cont inu ity,repa ir as necessary. If there is cont inu ity, refer toFuel Gauge test .

LOW FUEL WARNING CIRCUITThe low fuel warn ing lamp receives it s signa l from

the fuel gauge dr ive circu it . Due to product ion var ia -

t ions, the poin t where the lamp illumina tes, mayvary from 1/16 to 3/16 mark on the fuel gauge. Thereis a built in t ime delay before the lamp illumina tes.This prevents the lamp from going on and off undervar ious road condit ions.(1) Ver ify tha t the fuel gauge is opera t ing proper ly.(2) Check the low fuel warn ing lamp assembly.(3) If the lamp st ill does not funct ion under a low

fuel condit ion replace the pr in ted circu it board.

TACHOMETER CIRCUIT(1) Remove the cluster. Refer to Cluster Removal.(2) Check for ba t tery voltage a t P in J 1-6 of the

cluster wire harness connector (F ig. 12).(3) With the ignit ion switch in the ON posit ion ,

check for ba t tery voltage a t P in J 1-5 connector.(4) Check Pin J 1-8 of the connector for cont inu ity

to ground.(5) Check for tachometer signa l from the Power-

t ra in Cont rol Module by connect ing an AC DIGITALVOLTMETER to Pin J 1-7 of the connector andground. A reading of a t least 1.0 volt should bepresent with the engine running.

(a ) If the voltage is NOT with in specifica t ion , goto Step 6.(b) If the voltage is with in specifica t ion , go to

Step 7.(6) If there is less than 1.0 volt a t P in J 1-7 of the

connector, check for cont inu ity between Pin J 1-7 andPin 73 of the Power t ra in Cont rol Module connector(F ig. 14). Also, check the connector a t the Power t ra inCont rol Module for damaged pins or termina l pushouts.(7) If the voltage is less than 1.0 volt a t P in J 1-7 of

the connector and there is cont inu ity between PinJ 1-7 and Pin 73 of the PCM connector, replace thePower t ra in Cont rol Module.(8) If a ll t est s per formed test good, replace the dia l

TEMPERATURE GAUGE(1) Disconnect the coolan t tempera ture sensor

(F ig. 15).(2) Turn ignit ion switch ON. The tempera ture

gauge should be a t it s lowest posit ion . Turn ignit ionswitch OFF.(3) Ground tempera ture gauge sending unit con-

nector Pin 3. Refer to Group 8W, wir ing Diagrams.Turn ignit ion switch ON. The tempera ture gaugeshould be a t it s h ighest posit ion . After the sea t beltlamp goes out , the cluster should chime for abouteigh t seconds.

(a ) If OK, check tempera ture sending unit con-nector for proper connect ion . If connect ions are OK,replace the sending unit .

(b) If not OK, and the high tempera ture chimesounds but the gauge shows cold, replace the gaugeassembly. If gauge is st ill not working, replace thepr in ted circu it board.

SPEEDOMETER SYSTEMThe vehicle is equipped with a elect ron ica lly dr iven

speedometer and odometer assemblies. A signa l issen t from a t ransmission-mounted vehicle speed sen-sor to the speedometer circu it ry through the wir ingharness.

SEAT BELT REMINDER SYSTEM TESTFor test ing of th is system refer to Group 8U,

Chime Warning/Reminder Systems.

SENDINGUNITWhen a problem occurs with a cluster gauge check

for a defect ive sending unit or wir ing. Do th is beforedisassembling the cluster.(1) Sending unit s and wir ing can be checked by

grounding the connector leads a t the sending unit inthe vehicle.(2) With the ignit ion in the ON posit ion , a

grounded input will cause the fuel or tempera turegauge to read a t or above maximum.

the receptacle and remove from the base inst rumentpanel.

REMOVAL(1) Disconnect the ba t tery to ensure no DTCs are

cluster bezel.(3) Remove the four screws a t tach ing cluster hous-

ing to the base panel.(4) Pull the cluster rearward to disconnect from

base panel.(5) Remove the cluster assembly.

HEADLAMP LEVELINGSWITCH EXPORT

REMOVAL(1) Remove the top cover and cluster bezel assem-

bly.(2) Disengage the headlamp leveling switch bezel

from inst rument panel (F ig. 20).(3) Pull the switch and bezel rearward from the

opening and disconnect the wire connector.

HEADLAMP SWITCH

REMOVAL(1) Remove the steer ing column cover and liner.(2) Remove the three screws secur ing headlamp

switch mount ing pla te to the inst rument panel (F ig.21).(3) Pull the headlamp switch and mount ing pla te

rearward from the inst rument panel opening.(4) Disconnect both the nine way and the ground

wir ing connectors from the switch .

reta in ing nut and separa te switch from mount ingpla te.

HEATER A/CCONTROL

REMOVAL(1) Remove the top cover and cluster bezel.(2) Reach in and disconnect the wir ing connector (s)

for the rear window defogger and/or fog lampswitch(s) as required.(3) Remove the six a t tach ing screws across the for-

ward por t ion of the t r im panel. Then lift the flangeforward to disengage the three loca tor pins.(4) Pull panel rearward disengaging the clips

a long the bot tom.(5) Open the ash receiver.(6) Remove the center bezel.(7) Remove three a t tach ing screws a t corners of

the cont rol (F ig. 22).(8) Pull the cont rol rearward and disconnect the

wir ing connector.(9) Using a screwdr iver, disengage the cable

a t tachment clips.

HEATER A/CCONTROL BLOWER SWITCHThe switch is not serviced, replace hea ter A/C con-

REMOVAL(1) Remove the Heater A/C Cont rol. Refer to the

Heater A/C Cont rol Removal.(2) Remove the two center knobs by pulling the

knob rearward.(3) Replace the lamp.

HEATER CONTROL BLOWER SWITCHThe switch is not serviced, replace the hea ter con-

REMOVAL

CAUTION: Disconnect battery negative cable, inengine compartment, before servicing instrumentpanel.

(1) Disconnect and isola te the ba t tery nega t ivecable.(2) Remove the floor console. Refer to Floor Con-

sole Removal.(3) Remove the r igh t and left cowl side t r im pan-

els (F ig. 23).(4) Remove the steer ing column cover and liner.(5) Remove the top cover and cluster bezel assem-

bly.(6) Remove the r igh t and left t r im panel.(7) Remove the defroster upper duct by lift ing it

up.(8) Remove the center out let duct by pulling rear-

ward.(9) Disconnect the Heater A/C Cont rol, by remov-

ing the cont rol cables clips with a screwdr iver andremove the wire connector.

CAUTION: Lock the steering wheel in the straightahead position. This will prevent clockspring dam-age when the steering wheel rotates freely.

(10) Disconnect the steer ing column at the bot tomslap together join t .(11) Disconnect the ATX shifter in ter lock cable a t

the sh ifter, if equipped.(12) Disconnect the inst rument panel wir ing as

required.(13) Remove the four a t tach ing screws a t the cen-

ter floor pan bracket (F ig. 24).(14) Remove the four a t tach ing screws a t steer ing

column.(15) Remove the four cowl top nuts.(16) Remove the a t tach ing screws from the left

and r igh t lower cowl side bracket (F ig. 25).(17) Remove the two at tach ing screws from the left

upper cowl side and one from the r igh t upper cowlside.(18) Pull the inst rument panel rearward away

from the dash/plenum.(19) Remove the inst rument panel from vehicle.

(4) Remove the screws a t tach ing PC board cover tocluster.(5) Disconnect the odometer connector from the

pr in ted circu it board.(6) Remove the screws a t tach ing lens, dia l and

gauge assembly to the housing. The bot tom screwsa t tach ing lens to the housing can be accessed withoutremoving the foam pad.(7) Remove the lens, dia l and gauge assembly from

housing.(8) Remove the two screws holding the odometer to

dia l and gauge assembly. When set t ing the dia l/gaugeand/or cluster assembly down, it must be face up orthe gauge opera t ion will be damaged.

INSTALLATIONFor insta lla t ion , reverse the above procedures.

Carefu lly place the dia l and gauge assembly on thecluster and ensure tha t the odometer connector isplaced through the board. Insta ll with a sligh t rock-ing mot ion to ensure the pins on gauges line up.

REARWINDOWDEFOGGER AND/OR FOGLAMPSWITCH

REMOVAL(1) Remove the top cover and cluster bezel assem-

remove assembly (Fig. 27).(3) Pull the bezel and switch(s) rearward from the

t ion . Inser t a screw dr iver in to the access hole a t thebot tom of lower shroud to release the ignit ion keycylinder.(4) Pull ou t the ignit ion key cylinder.(5) Remove the three lower to upper shroud

a t tach ing screws through the bot tom of the lowershroud.(6) Separa te the upper and lower shrouds.

TRUNKLAMP/LENS

REMOVALThe t runk lamp snaps in to the rear shelf panel

reinforcement under /below the package shelf.(1) Remove the socket assembly by reaching up

above the sheet meta l. Push the snap inward anddownward and remove the assembly.(2) Remove the lamp from socket and pull the

socket from the lens. Replace as necessary.

INSTALLATIONFor insta lla t ion , reverse the above procedures.

VEHICLESPEED SENSOR

REMOVAL(1) Remove the harness connector from the sensor

and make sure the weather sea l is on the harnessconnector.(2) Remove the sensor reta in ing bolt .(3) Pull the sensor and pin ion gear assembly out of

t ransaxle. If necessary, carefu lly pry it loose with afla t blade tool (F ig. 31) and (Fig. 32).

INSTALLATIONFor insta lla t ion , reverse the above procedures. Sea t

the sensor assembly by hand to ensure proper gearengagement . Tighten reta in ing bolt to 7 N·m (60 in .lbs.) torque.
