With Her Majesty The Queen marking

her Diamond Jubilee this year it’s an occasion we at InterContinental London Park Lane are anticipating with great excitement, not least because of our heritage, which may not be obvious until we tell you why…

Princess Elizabeth was born in 1926, to the Duke of York (later King George VI), and Elizabeth, (later Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother). They moved in 1927 to a town house at 145 Piccadilly which was to remain the family home until their move to Buckingham Palace in 1937.

Fast forward to the modern era and InterContinental London Park Lane stands proudly today on that very site of 145 Piccadilly, The Queen’s childhood residence.

Historical accounts recall a white terraced building with a huge semi-basement kitchen, (“like the giant’s kitchen in a pantomime with its immense shiny copper pots and great fire-range”, the late royal photographer Lisa Snowdon) and an extensive garden shared with other houses.

Princess Elizabeth lived at the top of the house where the day nursery and night nursery with wide windows looked down on the park.

A 1939 Time Magazine article announced that following the coronation of George VI in 1937 and the subsequent move to Buckingham Palace, the house was thrown open to the public with a show of royal treasures, referred to as ’the most spectacular exhibition of the season’.

The best representation of The Queen’s childhood at 145 Piccadilly can be found in the multiple Oscar-winning film, The King’s Speech. Scenes of the young family living in the heart of Mayfair were actually filmed in Portland Place, but the ‘shabby chic’ interiors are perfectly in keeping with the style of the house at that time.

145 Piccadilly suffered the same fate as many in London during the war, being destroyed in the blitz, then in the late 1960’s work began on the design of InterContinental London Park Lane by Sir Frederick Gibberd.

The hotel was opened on 23rd September 1975 in a ceremony overseen by the 8th Duke of Wellington, Arthur Valerian Wellesley, who still resides part-time opposite the former 145 Piccadilly in Apsley House.

To bring you right up to date, see the next page for some of the great activities on the doorstep of 145 Piccadilly during this year’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Ask at Concierge for details.

For the traditionalist, there are delicate open

sandwiches, decadent cakes and home-baked scones with kentish strawberry jam and Cornish clotted cream. Meanwhile, for the more adventurous foodie, our botanical afternoon Tea will delight with a molecular gastronomic revelation.

Launching for spring, the new tea takes inspiration from the surrounding parks by ‘bringing the outside in’, blending peels, berries and herbaceous botanicals for a sensory experience.

A selection of open faced sandwiches include nettle marinated asparagus beef sirloin and smoked eel, horseradish and cucumber pair with citrus peeled scones, clotted cream, homemade strawberry jam and quince preserve. Matcha Green Tea Bavarois with Red Peach Jelly and Mandarin Tarts are just some of the mini-desserts on offer.

Executive Chef Paul Bates has worked alongside modern tea emporium Tea Palace to curate an extensive tea menu with two custom blends that pay tribute to the hotel – No. 1 Park Lane and The Wellington Blend both exclusively available at InterContinental London Park Lane.

Our list of Afternoon Teas starts from just £25 per person

The Wellington Lounge recently gained accreditation with the prestigious Tea Guild by the UK Tea Council.

a true Mayfair pairing our monthly Gin & Jazz

night is an evocative tribute to classic cocktails and golden age Jazz in the heart of Mayfair. The celebration invokes the heyday of hotel revelry when jazz was a social release and bootleg gin was served behind closed doors.

In stark contrast to clichéd hotel lobby jazz, this theatrical night adopts a curator approach when selecting the best talent to showcase at Gin & Jazz.

“We wanted to honour one of the most iconic pairings in gin history with a monthly event that transported guests to an era of decadence and splendour,” explains Stefano Filistad, manager of The Arch Bar and expert mixologist. “We pride ourselves on our gin knowledge and offering here at the hotel. We have more

than 35 varieties and a cocktail menu that is really a guide to gin through the ages. Each libation tells a story and Gin & Jazz brings it all to life.”

Executive Chef Paul Bates has risen to the challenge by creating Gatsby-esque sharing plates to match the occasion: the theatrical Cat’s Meow and decadent Hotsy Totsy – the former an oriental delight of lobster, sashimi and crab, the latter a mouth-watering arrangement of buffalo and foie gras burgers, tempura tiger prawns and chicken Yakatori.

And it all seems to be going down a treat. LondonJazz reports how it “…was promised classic cocktails and Golden Age jazz. Which is exactly what we got”, whilst Gintime simply calls it “a great way to spend Thursday nights”.

Such simplicity is reflected in the laid back ambience created at Gin & Jazz, with entry free of charge, but reservations absolutely essential. Its popularity is unsurprising, having showcased the likes of Benoit Viellefon and Emilia Mårtensson in recent months, who are as comfortable playing the Royal Albert Hall as they are the intimate surrounds of Gin & Jazz.

Gin & Jazz is held every third Thursday of the month from 7.30-10pm. Entry is complimentary, but tables should be booked to avoid disappointment. Make sure you also visit The Arch Bar every evening at 5.30pm, when guests are treated to a taster gin cocktail of the day served with a canapé to honour the Great British tradition of ‘Gin Hour.’

‘London’s latest jazz venue is not tucked into a Soho alleyway or hidden underneath an East End warehouse. It sits instead on one of the capital’s most dignified intersections, Park Lane and Piccadilly, where the unexpected juxtaposition of soul-stirring, syncopated tunes and august edifices recalls an era of carefree Charleston’s and buzzing speakeasies.’ Departures Magazine

britain has a long-term love affair with the trusty

umbrella, owing both to the unpredictability of our weather and our fixation for talking about it. Whether it’s april showers, festival season or our so-called ‘Indian summer’, you should never leave home without one.

These days, it’s possible to get a weather report immediately from your handheld device or laptop relating to your exact location. But in days gone by, the Brits have had to rely on a mixture of physics and superstition to judge the need for an umbrella.

Whether it’s red sky in the morning, a seagull sitting on the sand or cows with tails to the east, the chance of the onset of rain is genuinely high, according to meteorology. However, there is little to be said for it being ‘clear by eleven if it rains before seven’ and certainly no meteorological truth behind ‘cats and dogs eating grass before rain’.

Perhaps the most fabled day in the British calendar for weather forecasting is St. Swithin’s Day (15th July) on which day

“…if thou dost rain, For forty days it will remain, …if thou be fair, For forty days ‘twill rain nae mare.”We’ll let you be the judge of that one! Our advice is to take a brolly with you whatever the forecast – consider it a fashion accessory as much as a way of protecting you from the elements!

The royal Parks arein spectacular bloom

in springtime, making the change of season a real delight. The white flowers produced by sarcococcas and the colourful daphnes disappear making room for the beautiful hellebores and daffodils.

Also, May is the best time of the year to visit The Rose Garden, located between Queen Elizabeth’s Gate and the Serpentine in Hyde Park, a 5 minute walk from InterContinental London Park Lane.

Meanwhile, in Kensington Gardens May will bring a new production of the classic CS Lewis story,

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by the same company that brought Peter Pan to the Park in 2009. A bespoke theatre tent holding up to 1,650 people will feature amazing wrap-around scenery as well as a top quality cast. A short trip to Narnia is ideal to entertain children and grown-ups alike!

For those looking forward to some spring exercise, Hyde Park has an abundance of options including pedal boats on the Serpentine and tennis on South Carriage Drive – and if you’re planning on cycling or running, our Concierge will be delighted to help you plan your route. Complimentary bikes and helmets are supplied, as well as cards with recommended running routes to make the most of the Park.

DeSerT ISLanD DISHeSWhat inspires award-

winning Chef Theo randall in the kitchen? alongside his passion for ingredients, travel and wine, music helps Theo get his mojo working. We asked Theo about his top tunes to cook to and the reason behind each song…

SPaGHeTTI aLLe vonGoLe When the clams pop open, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville is the perfect accompaniment. The piece adds drama, life and excitement and makes cooking even more enjoyable. As Figaro, the barber himself, arrives on the scene and launches into the classic Largo Al Factotum, it’s as if the clams themselves are calling his name.

FISH STeW Fish stew is a labour of love and Places & Spaces by Donald Byrd is a great song for sitting back, relaxing with a glass of wine and watching the stew cook. And if the stew needs longer cooking time, just rewind and start the track all over again – and pour another glass!

aMaLFI LeMon TarT Hang Up Your Hang Ups by funk and jazz legend Herbie Hancock is the perfect match for my signature dessert. Hancock’s legendary synthesizer and horns combination is as zesty as that delicious Amalfi lemon. Both help brighten my day so it makes perfect sense that they would go together.

rISoTTo Smooth, a bit luxurious and to be enjoyed with a good bottle of wine, cooking Risotto means that it’s time for the so called Walrus of Love, Barry White and his classic It’s Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me. I don’t think I need to go into too much detail on this one!

ravIoLI DI erbeTTe Finally, no top tune list should be complete without a Stevie Wonder track. Sir Duke and Ravioli di Erbette are a great combination as both are lively, fun, and exciting, and the welcome end to a long day.

There was a time when dining at a luxury hotel

on Park Lane conjured up an image of caviar, succulent lobster tails, divine truffles, the finest champagnes and an abundance of exotic fruits and pastries. of course, this is still very much the case for those who pursue the ultimate gourmet experience – and our chefs jump for joy when such requests come in.

However, stories in recent years about the need for businesses, particularly within the hospitality sector, to demonstrate more responsibility towards well-being and the environment are well documented and increasingly supported by governing bodies and international organisations.

Cookbook Cafe at the InterContinental London Park Lane has been at the forefront of serving seasonal, sustainable, British produce since the restaurant opened in 2006.

Curator of this fabulous fare is Executive Chef Paul Bates, who takes such enormous pride in local produce that he’s gone one step further and created the 50 Mile Menu, with ingredients sourced from within 50 miles of the hotel here in Mayfair.

“It might sound as if we’re setting ourselves a tough challenge, but the most difficult thing is deciding what to leave off the menu,” Paul explained. “Our regular diners know our popular Market Table lunch and tailoring that has been easy.”

“For our à la carte 50 Mile Menu it’s been a case of sourcing some of the fabulous local fish, meat and poultry, with a focus on international flair in its presentation. Our fish comes from the English Channel, especially on the Essex coast, with lamb from Kent and poultry from Berkshire.”

So, why not drop in and devour some of our short-haul gastronomic delicacies? Paul, (himself from Kent and now living in Berkshire, keeping true to the 50 Mile Menu concept), is always eager to share his knowledge and ideas with diners. He and the rest of the Cookbook team will be happy to talk you through the menu and its origins.

In the meantime, we’ve selected one of Paul’s 50 Mile Menu spring classics for you to have a crack at within the very local confines of your own kitchen. See overleaf.
