this year, Rate.Beer.com named Bell's Two Hearted the best IPA in the world.
Many of our customers (and staff)
would agree. Bell's Brewery, located in Kalamazoo, Michigan and founded by Larry Bell as a home brewing supply shop in 1983, sold its first commercial beer in September 1985. Beer was initially brewed in a 15-gallon
soup kettle, and the company has grown remarkably from its production of 135 barrels (1
barrel = 31 gallons) in 1986 to over 248,000 barrels in 2013. Tuesday, October 14, we will be
tasting five of Bell's beers, along with seasonal selections from our kitchen chosen to pair with them. Chambli has the samples and is working on the pairings so details should be available soon. Please

and up are invited to travel with Ms. Sonya to attend the Greenville Dance Festival in the beautiful Greenville County Schools Fine Arts Center. We will
be learning from regional and national dance educators in a
variety of different and interesting genres. At the end of the day, we'll see a live performance given by these acclaimed instructors! It will be a very fun and educational event!
Adults are welcome to join us for weekly classes and at the Greenville Dance Festival, too! We offer adult instruction in beginner ballet and Hot Pop! dance fitness. It's never too late

Spartanburg Award of Excellence
Saluda artist, Jim Carson, recently won
a $500 Award of Excellence for 2-D in the 41st Annual Artists Guild of Spartanburg Juried Show. The award winning painting was
entitled "Local Chicken", 20x24, and was a painting of the free range chickens on the farm of Shelley and Tom Dekay on Pace
Mountain Road near Saluda. Jim Carson Selected for Fall Party in Beaufort,
NC
Jim Carson, Saluda artist, has been selected as the featured artist for the 2014 Beaufort
Historical Association Fall Party, in Beaufort , North Carolina, benefitting the Beaufort Historical
Association. The event features an art show and sale on Saturday, October
18, at 6:30 PM at the homes of Bob and Donna Ivey and Dale Pully. Jim will have over twenty five paintings in the show, many featuring the boats, harbor and street scenes of the charming sea coast town of Beaufort, N.C.
There will be a private preview sale on Thursday night, Oct. 16, for Sponsors and Patrons only, at the Historical Association building
on Turner Street, in Beaufort.
Jim will also give a two day plein air workshop in Beaufort on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct 15 -16. This workshop is full, but there is a waiting list. Therefore, if interested, contact Patricia

The Old
Chicken House

Here's an idea for you--a project just for fun or to use as a gift idea! Are you already a collector? If so, you know the satisfaction of
coming across an item just right for adding to your collection. Come visit the Hen's Nest, an area inside the Old Chicken House
set aside as an indoor yard sale.
If you're not a collector now, you might see something that strikes your fancy and you can begin. For instance, you can find many examples of vintage jewelry you can wear or can use in a huge variety of craft projects. I'd love
to suggest some so that you can make something and say, "I made it myself."
But suppose you need a gift for a special person. Begin a collection of a favorite thing for them. They
and others can enjoy adding to
their collection for a long time to come. A few suggestions might be pottery mugs, very small mirrors to hang as wall decorations or, perhaps, miniature vases the
right size for three little violets in the spring or dried grasses right now. The Old Chicken House has these and more.
Join the Chicken House Collectors Club. We'll shop for you when you join; leave your name, how to
reach you and specify the type item you collect. We'll contact you when we find it.

Dates: October 20-24,
2014 This workshop
consists of 5 painting days exploring the landscape
of the Southern Blue Ridge. We'll begin the workshop in the studio Monday morning with talks and
demonstrations, have an early lunch ("Dutch") at one of Saluda's delightful cafes and head out to
paint. There isn't a more beautiful time to paint the Southern Blue Ridge landscape. Fall foliage, waterfalls and winding streams provide spectacular opportunities for painting and photography. The workshop is open for beginners to
advanced, with one to one instruction in watercolor, oil, acrylic, and pen and ink sketching. Participants may work in any or all media. A materials list will be sent to all participants.

a volunteer substitute driver for the Meals on Wheels program, please contact Donna at 828-749-9245. This would require approximately 1-1 1/2 hours of your time when needed.

Brown Bag
Collection Supplemental emergency bags of groceries will be distributed to anyone in need
on the third Friday of the
month for the next six months beginning September 19, 2014 at Church of the Transfiguration, Saluda. The distribution of these
bags will take place between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm on Friday afternoons at the church parish hall located at 72 Charles Street
in Saluda. This will be a "no questions asked" gift of hospitality to anyone in need.
Supplies may be limited so come early. Distribution will be first come first served until all available bags have been distributed. For more information call the

Halloween
Stroll The City of Saluda's Police Department, in conjunction with
Saluda businesses, will hold its annual Halloween Stroll, Friday, October 31, 2014 from 3pm to 6pm. The event is from Nostalgia Courtyard to across the bridge.
Businesses will be handing out candy and surprises while the City's police department keeps the children safe while crossing roads.
Polk
County
Sweep Please
help this year be even more successful for Polk County's Big Sweep. The cleanup will begin on October 25 at 9:00 a.m. and last
until 12:30 p.m. Green River volunteers will meet at the Fishtop Access parking area on
Green River Cove Rd. Volunteers can contact Polk County Coordinator, Mark
Byington, at 864-979-7436 for more information or go to the Big Sweep website at ncbigsweep.org to learn more.

Park Work is continuing on the agility course at the
dog park: the
area has been fenced, weeds cut, grass
planted, and 3 ramps are temporary installed for your pets to use.
Please make sure all gates are closed when you leave the park.
The Saluda community dog park is possible because of generous volunteers and donors.

Dinner The annual
Saluda United Methodist Church's Turkey Dinner will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014, at the Saluda School cafeteria from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
The meal will include turkey and dressing with gravy, green beans, sweet potatoes, rolls, homemade desserts, and a drink. All this for only $4 per child...12 and under...
and $8 per adult.
Tickets will go on sale on Monday, October 6, by Methodist Church members. You may also buy tickets at the door. Take-out plates will be available.

Saluda Community Tree
Preservation Association We are so fortunate to have the many healthy, beautiful old trees
we enjoy in our Saluda community. We can thank the generations who were here before us for protecting them or, at
least, for not cutting them down. Probably, more than at any other season, we appreciate their beauty when leaves are turning red and gold in fall. The conifers
stand like sentinels among the leafy branches in contrasting dark green uniforms. Aside from their aesthetic value, do we tend to forget their
tremendous practical benefits?
They purify the air we breathe, help to control storm water damage from run-off, increase property values, and help provide for less energy consumption. How can we help our community
to become greener and healthier? It requires everyone to take part actively in support of our Saluda
community Tree Preservation Association and Saluda's branch of Tree City USA, looking now toward the designations.

Trust Adopt-A-Highway The Saluda
Community Land Trust (SCLT) has been diligently working to control Kudzu in the Saluda area for the past several
years. Through volunteers and a gracious grant from the Polk
County Community Foundation, SCLT has made progress! We will be sponsoring a "Kudzu Education" night for those interested in what SCLT has accomplished and what future
projects are in the making for kudzu and other invasive plants.

We will be talking about the different methods and tools that are used, the time of year to engage in these activities, and
what landowners can do to help control their kudzu problem. You are invited to come to the Saluda Center on October 9 at 6pm for a free Chili dinner. There will be at least 4 different types of
chili and the program is directed to both children and adults. SCLT encourages the community to come and see what you can do as a property owner in taking the initiative in helping to control
kudzu in Saluda and surrounding areas. This is a free event and everyone is invited. Bring your
children and neighbors for an informative evening to expand your knowledge of how you can help to control kudzu in our
community. Walks in the Woods:
October 5-Cove Mountain-Two to three miles of easy to moderate walking, lasting about two hours. We will walk to private
property off Holbert Cove Road and Scout Camp Road. October 19- Waters of Camp Creek Upper Trail-Two miles of moderate hiking. Enjoy the fall
spectacular of the upper portion
of the trail. We will meet in the parking lot at the Saluda library at 2 pm and carpool. Bring water and wear weather appropriate clothing and shoes suitable for water crossing.
If you have any special medical concerns please let your trail leader know. This is always a wonderful time to get with friends and family and enjoy the great outdoors here in our own community.

Oral History Project Continues
A very special thank you goes out to Pauline Gordon Corn for her recent oral history interview. Pauline did a fantastic job and had obviously put much preparation into it. Pauline was
born to John and Evelyn Gordon in 1931. They lived in the Mountain Page Community near where Lake Hosea is today. In 1934, Pauline's parents bought a store from a Mr. Ramsey who ran a general store where City Hall is
today. In 1943, they purchased the building where Ward's Grill is today. Their business was called Gordon's General Merchandise, where they sold groceries, hardware, dry goods, feed and fertilizer. At the age of twelve,
Pauline was allowed to go to work in the store and she relayed this
was one of the highlights of her life. The Gordons operated the store until 1948, when they sold it and moved to Hendersonville.
Another interesting fact about Pauline is that she is the granddaughter of Marion and Matilda Gordon. Marion was known around these parts as the "Fiddle Maker." Pauline shared stories and pictures of her
grandfather along with a small ledger upon which Marion had recorded the sale of his chairs, stools and handmade fiddles. His
"violins," as he called them, were sold for $10 apiece. Pauline was married to the late Lenell Corn and currently lives in Hendersonville.

archived in preparation for a future Historic Saluda Museum. Donations of originals or copies of

audio documentary, "Saluda, NC: Voices from the First 100 Years." Over 30 years ago when Anne Osborne and
Charlene Pace were working on their book Saluda, NC: 100 Years 1881-1981, they conducted interviews with some of Saluda's oldest residents. Luckily, these interviews were captured on what
we now consider to be "old fashioned" cassette tapes and were donated to the Oral History Committee. Snippets from these
interviews were woven into a story line and compiled into this CD. Funding provided by the Polk County Community Foundation's Saluda Community Fund. The CD can be purchased ($10) through local merchants and at City Hall.

Saluda Gem
Mine has several
pieces of history in the rock room,
literally. In 1962
The Polk County Rock and Mineral Museum was open here in Saluda by W.C. Ashley. It used to be located where the Saluda Grade Café is now located. Eric Ashley, the grandson of the late W.C.
Ashley has graciously loaned the Gem Mine several specimens of Rocks & Minerals that can be found locally. The Ashley family has continued to cherish their now private museum and Eric himself is still quite the rock
hound.
At the Gem Mine, we have framed one of the rock room's front windows to display these pieces of history and will be framing the other front window to display
others from the Museum that are found in other states and countries. We are very proud to have these pieces on loan to help educate everyone as to some of the gems and minerals that can
be found native to NC and around the world. The Polk County museum has been closed now for 42 years, and we are very
grateful to the Ashley family to be able to share these pieces of history. In our mining buckets, the Gems and Minerals that can be found are those that can be found
locally and in other countries. We also have a fossil find bucket. Our water trough sluice is covered and we will have a water trough sluice inside through the winter as well. We have group discount

Irmy from the Dressing Room as a fund raiser for the Foothills Humane Society. Thanks to the generous donations of many of our local businesses, and the fabulous turnout of 80 attendees, the silent auction and
raffle raised $1100 for the
Humane Society. In addition, we adopted a 10-week old kitten named Edward. He and his pal Newman look forward to greeting you here on your next visit! Since we re-named the restaurant after

Recipe for Baked Apple French Toast 1 cup brown sugar 2 tbls white corn syrup 1/2 cup butter 3 or 4 large apples Peel and slice apples in medium size slices. In large skillet, melt the butter, add apples and simmer until apples are almost cooked, add brown sugar and corn syrup and simmer until sugar is dissolved. Pour into 13 x 9 x 2 glass baking dish. Layer 6 bread slices (crust trimmed) on top of apple mixture; add a second layer of bread, for a total of 2 layers. Make sure bread is a snug fit. 5 eggs slightly beaten 1 1/2 cups milk 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp salt Whisk eggs, milk, vanilla and salt in bowl to blend. Pour over the bread and apples. Cover with foil and store in fridge. (Can be prepared the night before.) Bake French toast at 350 degrees, uncovered for approximately 45- minutes. Allow to rest for 5 minutes.
Cut into serving portions. Using spatula, invert each portion on serving plate so that apple side is up. Garnish with a generous sprinkle of cinnamon and serve. ENJOY!

Hincapie Bike Event October 25, 2014 For the 3rd year, George Hincapie,
retired, world class professional cyclist, along with family and friends, is hosting a Gran Fondo
in our area! Hundreds of cyclists will be pedaling in our backyards, and it is time for us to showcase our area and its beauty! The ride/event planners are looking
for many volunteers to make this ride a success. The most critical need is for course marshals. Course Marshals provide safety for the riders by letting them
know of upcoming changes in direction or dangerous descents
and hairpin turns. Course Marshals also provide information for motorists in case of slowing traffic. Course Marshals are needed all along the route from 9am until
about 2pm, with our most critical areas being around the lake in Tryon, up and down Skyuka Mountain, and any possible high-traffic areas.
Besides front row seats to all of
the action and being able to see professional riders on our roads, all volunteers will receive the following for their time and efforts:
A cyclist musette bag (aka "feeder bags") full of goodies like an official Rider's Guide, an offical Volunteer t-shirt, Hincapie water bottle, coupons to local events and businesses, Hincapie socks, and an official event bottle of
wine! Course Marshals are also invited back to the beautiful Hotel Domestique for a FREE, family-
friendly festival with live music, blow-up kid rides, food, beer, and a chance to meet the professional

Narrows
Kayak Race will be held on Saturday, November 1
at high noon. Over 100 racers, passing through the most
majestic section of the river, and from all over the World, will compete for the first place trophy. The spectators that make the trek down Pulliam Creek Trail (off of Big Hungry Rd) will witness someone kayaking The Gorilla
every minute for almost 2.5 hours. It is said this is the "greatest show in all of sports."
The energy is electric and the fun factor is always high.

Being close to things natural at
work and at play virtually dominates Mary Jo Wannamaker's life, and living in Saluda couldn't complimen
t that lifestyle any better.
It all started years ago when Mary Jo's parents, the L.B. Wannamakers of St. Matthews, South Carolina, picked Saluda for their mountain home. Mary Jo
spent weekends and summers during her teenage and college years in Saluda, coming to love the things it offers and its people. "Ben and I were actually married here at the Church of the
Transfiguration. Mom and Dad still come up here almost every weekend," she said.
"Bike riding, hiking, and contra dancing are things we like to do in Saluda," Mary Jo said through
a wide smile. "We're just happy here," she said, speaking for her Ben and their two children-a daughter in graduate school and a son who has taken a job on the West Coast.
Mary Jo has a business life in Saluda as well. "I brought my business with me when we moved here permanently two years ago." She was able to combine her education-Duke, Texas A&M,
and a PhD from North Carolina State in plant breeding-with experience in the family's L.B. Wannamaker Seed in St. Matthews. The result was her own company, Wannamaker Seeds, which she now operates
from Saluda. It's a specialty company involving seed development, production and sales for the agricultural industry.

L.B., Mary Jo's dad, took the family business in South Carolina from producing stock seed for
farmers to seeds for wildlife and game management. Mary Jo's company specializes in onion seeds-the famous Vidalia onion, to drop a name-and most recently, seed production for edamame, an edible soybean
product which is popular in the Far East and relatively new in the United States. "We've also produced some wildflower seeds as well." She sells seeds to farmers and to major producers
whose vegetable products can be found at the local supermarket.
"I love working with the farmers-selling them seed," she said, "and I really like being on the front end of the growing season." It is also
convenient, she said, to be able to "warehouse my seed right here in Saluda." "This is such a community-oriented place," she said, speaking of Saluda. "I've been
involved in the Saluda Land Trust, the Saluda Business Association and the Tailgate Market." She said people in the Asheville-Hendersonville-Saluda
area "have such great ideas up
here. People get involved." Once she established her own company and knew she could run it from her home office, "there was no way that I was not going to move up to Saluda."
After looking for a place to build, Mary Jo and Ben settled on a heavily wooded hillside tract with a beautiful mountain view. Although it is just minutes down a narrow lane from Saluda's Main Street, it is secluded. She sat on
the screened porch with her two
Springer Spaniels and smiled. "We just love it out here. Sometimes I feel like I'm twenty-five miles from anywhere."

Stories and Such… Saluda’s Ozone Saluda Magazine, from first issue published in 1936 by Susan Leland Craig from 1936-1938. Without
understanding the reason why it should be so, many have seen and felt the improvement in
health brought about by a change to the Saluda climate. The story is told of a Mrs.
Williams from Europe, who in search of relief from asthma,
accidentally came upon Saluda. It was in the early days of the train, which often had to wait here at the top of the grade for some reason or other. One night when the train was delayed here and all the passengers had to spend the
night at "Mountain House," the hotel operated by Col. A. Tanner, Mrs. Williams happened to be among the passengers. Next morning, she enthusiastically told Col. Tanner, "This air is
marvelous. My search is ended.
Here's where I stay. For the first time in years, I've had a real night's rest, Please have my baggage left right here." So Mr. and Mrs. Williams bought a site and built a home on what is now
known as Stackhouse Hill, commanding one of the most inspiring views in this section. There they lived many years, enjoying the scenery, studying bird life, rambling over the mountain trails, until finally Mrs.
Williams was completely cured and decided to return to Europe.
Many other equally sensational cures have been effected here-cures of tuberculosis, nerve
trouble, malaria, and all children's diseases. It is the children especially who are benefitted by Saluda's climate.
Many persons have been heard to say, "I don't know why it is so,
but I just feel better in Saluda."
Then when a U.S. Government report stated that, with the exception of one Village in Italy, more ozone is released in
Saluda's atmosphere than at any place in the world, folks had a reason feeling better-OZONE. There can be no "seeing is believing" business about ozone. It is one of those things that have to be taken by faith. And while it
is the source of jest and merriment, it quietly goes on doing its health work. Mr. E.H. Gaines gives this explanation of ozone: When the
warm winds from the South blow over the low country and strike against Saluda Mountain as
against a wall, they must rise up the side of the mountain. As the warm air rises upwards over an almost perpendicular distance of
800 feet and through a change of 12 degrees in temperature, filtering through a mass of foliage, chemical changes are brought about, causing it to release into the atmosphere in great quantities that peculiar
quality or gas known as ozone. So we find the peculiar circumstances causing the generation of excessive quantities of ozone are the sudden change
in elevation and temperature and
the filteration of air through an abundance of leaves. Official government records show Saluda has an average summer temperature of 70.72 degrees Fahrenheit; spring. 53.49;
autumn, 53.48, and a mean for the year of 54.15 degrees. The relative humidity is only 65 per cent.

Some Friendships Endure the Ages Unlike most young Saluda
males seeking attention from summer girls, I was lucky to have several young ladies whose family homes were located in my immediate neighborhood. Thus I was able to enjoy these platonic
friendships over several summers. They first began to develop around the onset of puberty and continued throughout most of my middle teenage years.
While a couple of these girls were my age or slightly younger,
several others were "older women" by a year or two, and extremely attractive. Sisters Nicki and Mimi Ogden--whose family, including two younger siblings, Anita and Ellen,
was eventually forced to flee Cuba during Castro's takeover--lived just up the hill on Piney Mountain. They were hands-down two of the most vivacious and most sought-after square dancing
partners in town because no
matter how intoxicated or odorous the potential dance partner, these two sisters treated each one with dignity and class. Both would dance every set with their heads thrown back and a
huge smile affixed to their perspiration-drenched faces as though they were having the best times of their lives. Lucy Holman was also one of my nearest, but slightly older,
neighbors (oops!) who frequently invited several of her girl friends from South Carolina to Saluda for
brief stays each year. Their more mature age was very intimidating to me and resulted in my being
quite uncomfortable when I was around them. On occasions, Lucy would tease me by telling her friends that I was her Saluda boyfriend. I could feel my face turn crimson with embarrassment and would begin to fidget as only
a nervous post-pubescent boy can do. One of those occasions is stilled
burned into my memory. Lucy had hollered for me to come up and meet some of her girl friends who at that time were sitting on a rock wall adjoining the driveway to her house. There must have been five or six of them and all
were pretty, just like Lucy. I had previously met one of her friends, Mary Moore Milling, who at that time had stolen the hearts of a number of older local boys, as well as mine, and was one of the
most sought after summer girls due to her stunning good looks. Nervousness immediately set in
as I desperately tried to remain cool while introductions were made. Once again Lucy jokingly proclaimed me as her Saluda
boyfriend. My immediate response was to begin awkwardly prying chunks of green moss from the stone wall, followed by stripping even more from the driveway. It didn't take long for me to remove a fairly large
amount of moss that soon littered the ground. Suddenly looming out of the corner of my eye appeared Lucy's
grandmother, Mrs. E. T. H.
Shaeffer, who was literally horror-struck by what I had done. In front of all these cuties, she proceeded in a very firm voice to read me what must have been at least a five-hour riot act for desecrating her beloved and
nearly sacred collection of moss. Her tirade was frequently interspersed by references about how shocked and disappointed she was in me, which just added to the humiliation. When her lengthy admonition finally ended,
I was totally overwhelmed with
timidity and slowly slinked back to my home. Since I was her exclusive "yard boy," Mrs. Shaeffer called me a
few weeks later and asked if I could come up and clean her "piazza" in preparation for an afternoon social party. Since that word was not part of my vocabulary, I hesitated to ask its
meaning, but assumed I would find out soon enough. A short time later, I knocked on the back porch screen door to let her know
of my arrival. Her more detailed instructions were to thoroughly rake all leaf debris from the piazza and then to carry several folding tables and covers to that area. After retrieving a rake from under her house, I proceeded to
groom the area immediately adjoining the back entrance to the house and walkway which led around to an expansive front porch. When she finally realized what I was doing, she once again
asked that I concentrate my efforts on the piazza. I was still too embarrassed to ask what she
was referring to, so when I gathered up the tables and covers, I just stacked them next to the screen door. Her
frustration finally began to get the best of her as she grabbed an armload of covers and asked me to follow her. Only then did I have any inkling about what she had been speaking of. To me her piazza just looked like a couple of
stone walls with built-in seating and a grill. On another occasion, Lucy had a house full of girlfriends but this
time things were different. The
sounds of male voices had begun to drift from the large front porch that summertime afternoon, which indicated that a boyfriend/girlfriend party was most likely in the making for that evening. Although I honestly
don't remember being the instigator of the prank aimed at these out-of-town lover boys, logically I would have been the only local to have had knowledge of the gathering. Anyway, by nightfall, four of my friends and I
had borrowed a bumper jack and
several large wooden blocks with the intent of raising the rear wheels of one of the visiting male's cars off the ground so none could leave the driveway.
Now for anyone who is not familiar with bumper jacks, there is a fairly loud click as each notch catches while the car is being raised. Despite the steady

laughter and loud voices emanating from the nearby porch party, those sounds weren't enough to cover the muffled
laughter and clicks being generated as we worked in the darkness to accomplish our dastardly deed. No sooner had we gotten the first rear wheel resting on a block and
had begun to work on the second, the sounds of excited voices from the porch began to pierce the air. Our stealth had not worked and it was time to haul buggy. Unfortunately, the weight of the
car was too much and time was of the essence so the borrowed bumper jack became lost
luggage. Like scattered pigeons, we raced down Pine Street to Esseola Drive and briefly paused for a rest when suddenly there
were approaching sounds of a roaring engine. "How in the heck were they able to get that car back on the ground so quickly?" was the question that I would still like an answer to! However, with no time for slow decisions, we
scampered up the nearby ivy-covered bank and hid behind some very large eastern hemlocks. After driving back and forth several times, the males in
the chase car eventually gave up
the hunt and drove back to the party, but not before leaving numerous loud comments about what specific part of our bodies they were going to whip should we dare to reappear.
Now more than 60 years later, I still enjoy the distinct pleasure of occasional brief visits with Nicki and Lucy on my return trips to Saluda. Some friendships just seem to be built for endurance.
