TEEN READ WEEK was celebrated during the week of October 15-19 with the theme “It

Came From the Library”. Reading Plus members decorated the library with lots of spiders, ghosts, bats and other creepy creatures which really brought the theme to life! The library also conducted book trivia contests with winners being drawn daily for a Sheetz gift certificate. Stu-

dents seemed pretty happy to receive these prizes. Research Help Does your student ever need to have access to school databases at home? Well, now it’s possible

through remote access. Simply go to the WMHS Library homepage at http://www.augusta.k12.va.us/domain/793 and select “Databases”. There will be a prompt asking for a password for the first two databases. For EBSCO the User ID is s437601, password is hornets

and for the World Book the user name is ―augusta1 and the password is worldbook. The re-maining database, called Find It Va, links you to databases supplied by the Library of Virginia and there are no logins or passwords required.

Printer Cartridge Recycling The library continues to collect printer cartridges and cell phones for recycling. The school re-

ceives money for these, so please keep us in mind when you need to dispose of this type of item. Students may drop off any contributions in the library and we’ll send them in. Thanks so much for your support!

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) The FAFSA is the form used by the U.S. Department of Educa-tion to determine your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) by

provide. The form is submitted to, and processed by, a federal

processor contracted by the U.S. Department of Education (ED), and the results are electronically transmitted to the financial aid

offices of the schools that you list on your application.

FAFSA is the application used by nearly all colleges and universi-

One-Act Play Places Second In Shenandoah District

Who Returned My Soul,a one-act play that tells the stories of real Holocaust survivors, written my Kelly Brock Galloway placed second at the Shenandoah District Theatre Festival on October 22nd and will advance to Regional competition on November 17th at Nelson County High School. The play which was made possible for the Foundation for Holocaust Education Projects was commission to tell the stories of

Holocaust survivors living in Miami, Florida. Directed by Mr. Stephen Winslow, the play tells the true stories in a series of

vignettes of Edith Castoriano played by Clarice Ellinger, Emery “Pinchas” Deutsch

played by Joe Evans, the roles of Henry Frydman and Issac Kline are both played by Lucas Burns, Zoe Chetlin played Henry’s wife of 61 years Sabina Frydman, Erica Snook played Ann Rosenheck and rounding out the cast are Historians Leara Shumate and

Kyle Young. Lighting technician is Jacob Miller, sound technician is Leara Shumate and set designer is Jaclyn Hostetter.

The play is an ensemble piece which means that the actors play multiple roles in flashback scenes as the survivors remember the events of the Holocaust. Edith Cas-

toriano tells vividly about her families escape to Peru from her beloved France. She cautions the audience with words she heard a concentration camp survivor, “When someone tells you they are going to kill you, believe them.” Emery “Pinchas” Deutsch charges the audience to believe in miracles

when he says, “God works miracles. God made miracle after miracle and saved me, and I hope you see the miracles in your life as I have seen in mine.” Henry Frydman tells of his narrow escape from a firing squad,

but also the loss of thirteen of his friends, “By the time I got inside the machine gun was already working and my friends were dead.”

Sabina Frydman tells of her last moments with her mother as a German soldier rips her mother from her arms slapping her. “My

mother was taken away, and I never saw her again. This was the beginning.” For Sabina it was the beginning of her imprisonment at Dachau, a Nazi concentration and death camp. Issac Kline shares with the audience his many deaths saying, “By the time I was four-teen I had died many times.” Saved by Dr. Josef Mengele, Issac and

his brother, twins, were forced to bear horrid experiments. “We were alone, but we had each other. I was not old enough to com-

prehend the crime that the Nazis were committing. If I was, I probably would have gone mad. It took me a long time to come

back to life.” Ann Rosenheck tells of her experience as one of 109 people trapped in a cattle car being transported to Auschwitz concentration and death camp. It is estimated that 1.5 million people are buried

at Auschwitz. Arriving at Auschwitz, Ann is separated from her family as Dr. Mengele directed her to an-other line. “I cannot remember whose hand I was holding. Was it my sister’s? My mother’s? I do not know. But I let go.” Despite all that has happen to her, Ann still is thankful as she says, “Today, when I

open my eyes in the morning and I brush my hair I say my prayers . . . “I am thankful before you Living and Sustaining Ruler, who returned my soul to me with mercy. Your faithfulness is great.”

In addition to second place honors in the festival, Erica Snook and Joe Evans received second place Best Actor awards. Also receiving recognition for their acting abilities were Lucas Burns and Zoe Chetlin.
