At a UIP meeting held in 2017 the events around the flood crisis events were noted as well as the increase of criminal activities within the Village. Container Conversions (Pty) Ltd acknowledged the need for increased visibility and a base for increased operations and donated a container unit to the HCPF which is now situated at the corner of Ewelme and Henley Drive The HCPF embraced this opportunity and makes use of the unit for meetings, fundraising, information and crisis control. During the last flood crisis the HCPF Unit served as a control room for

crisis management, providing communication to HCPF patrols, fielding phone calls to and from people in the Village, receiving and dispatching meals and warm drinks, as well as acting as a central meeting point. Henley on Klip CPF thanks t h e f o l l o w i n g : C o n t a i n e r Conversions (Pty) Ltd for the donation of the Unit, the Da Silva family for use of the grounds, Rayno Kroeger for beautifying

The BIG wind

Costumes, Music and Fun with a capital F!

The BIG wind that swept through Henley on 5 November (Bonfire night, but no fireworks were heard) uprooted a few trees and caused some damage to roofs. This tree briefly blocked Ewelme Road until Midvaal contractors arrived to cut up the offending branches. Restoring electricity took longer but after 4 hours most of Henley was reconnected. Those in the immediate vicinity of this downed

pole, notably Vasco's, had to wait 36 hours to have the power restored. Most residents were impressed by the efficiency and the dedication of the Eskom workers. – Ed

HCPF hosted its first Boombox event on 29 September. The enthusiasm and excitement could be felt as you walked into the Glen Douglas Hall. Pirates, hippies, cowboys, mafiosi and many more different characters attended this fun-filled event. The decorated tables proved that there are many highly creative people in Henley. The music quiz participants could have won a Noot vir Noot challenge any day with their quick

and witty responses. The dance moves put legends in the dancing industry to shame. The generosity of people during the auction that was also held that night was heart-warming. As always, the success of any event lies in the preparation. The friendly and caring people of Henley donated lasagne, salads, rolls and so much more. There was so much leftover, that we could make a big donation to a crèche that really needed it. We were able to feed 50 kids for a week again thanks to Helplift's distribution channels. Thank you to all the kind-hearted people of Henley for opening your hearts, kitchens and wallets to the CPF's Initiative Team who worked very hard to arrange such a successful evening. The CPF Change Initiative Team is the body that raises funds for the CPF's projects like installing cameras, buying night visions and other equipment to support their efforts in keeping Henley safe. This Initiative Team managed to raise just over R13000 during this event.

Novel Fundraiser by Henley on Klip LionsThe “Professionals” (origin unknown but compliments of Lion Grant) This painting sets the scene for a night of great fun and laughter and a novel fundraiser. On 21 September 2018 the Henley on Klip Lions Club's fundraiser took the form of a Texas Hold'em Night This consisted of a highly skilled game of cards with some snacks provided, requiring a buy-in fee in return for playing tokens. The object of the game was for each individual to amass as many tokens as possible, the

winner being the person who had gathered the most tokens by the end of the night. Second and third prizes were also awarded. The prizes comprised a proportion of the buy-in fee with the balance being allocated to the Lions Club Activity Account.Colleen Commons, seen here with organiser Grant Neve, was the winner. She generously donated her winnings back to the club.

Henley on Klip Lions induct two new members

On Friday 28 September, the Henley on Klip Lions Club proudly inducted two new members namely Janine Birney and Marinus van Es. They will add a great deal of enthusiasm and capacity to the already very active club.

“Dream Big to make a Big Impact. You have two choices. You can shrink your dream to fit reality. Or you can stretch reality to fit your dreams. Making dreams reality is not magic – You have to work at it. The first thing is to name the dream. Share the dream with others. Secondly, plan to achieve the dream. An action plan will force the dream to become real. Live the dream. We are who we want to be. Let’s not be night dreamers who wake up in the morning and can’t remember their dreams.” Barny J Palmer

Were they grate or were they great?

The Henley Performing Arts Society unleashed their 2018 revue in the O'Connor Hall at the beginning of November with plenty of Henleyisms and not a few pokes at local landmarks, liabilities and legends. There was plenty of laughter from the arrival at the Pound of those AbFab favourites Eddie and Patsy on their whirlwind tour of South Africa, to closing time at e-bowler as the Road Closure Committee discussed how to make Henley Grate Again, hopefully without de-molishing the Rebstein Bridge, chipping all the residents, or stealing the street decorations. The content, MC Marie Thompson explained without remorse, was either home-grown or shamelessly plagiarised. There were hoots from the audience as local characters were named or recognised, from the oke from MacJobbing, to Phyllis digging ditches across the road, to our trusty councillor Belinda BartSimpsonssonson… There was even a brief appearance by a pair of scandalously underclad Henley Hiawathas (especially from the rear). After WAM, the invitation to a wine-tasting couldn't be ignored, even if the unctuous and ethereal qualities of the Riesling de Plonk couldn't quite withstand Patsy's enthusiastic onslaught. After interval Detective Vera had to be summoned to solve The Murder at Shillingford Manor which was nobly overacted with plenty of bloopers – only the cast know which were meant to happen! Supper was served by Dee and George and their team from the Windmill and the Lions were kept busy with bottles in their newly renovated Basil's Bar. All in all, the three performances went down a treat!

– Jen de Klerk

The Scotsman, the priest and the rabbi were part of the joke that was the HPA revue. They appeared at the Pound and were present at e-bowler observing the wine tasting and the Road Closure committee respectively, but nobody asked their opinion.

Hiawatha (Angus Gilfillan) and his sign language interpreter,(Terry Griffith) explained Henley to the ignorant. The first lines were:

On the shores of Henley's River,Where there used to be a bridge,Stood a pommie from the tribe of Soutie,Fear less hunter : "Watcher Cocker"

Swiftly flowed the crystal waters, teaming with E. coli lifeOverhead the silver eagle, flying in from LAX Hark, the distant ice-cream Kombi,And the call of Hadida

Dear ResidentsThe late President Kennedy famously said, “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country”. Perhaps Midvaal Local Municipality could ask the same. Everywhere I go I hear the municipality blamed for everything whether is in their competency or not. I hear false information given out under the cloak of absolute certainty and I hear a lack of appreciation for just how fortunate we are to live in such a well-run municipality. Notice, I do not claim the municipality is perfect but MLM is a well governed, effectively managed, financially viable and sustainable, local government organisation that is committed to growth. We strive every day to give life to our vision, “To inclu-sively serve the needs of our community”. It is shameful to allege that by striving to do so we are trying to buy votes. I have been accused of not being able to name the budget amount allocated to Henley. Firstly, what budget – the operating budget or the capital budget? The operating budget is for Midvaal in its entirety. Should we calculate the number of hours the waste depart-ment spends in Midvaal and calculate the number of hours spent in another ward collecting rubbish and then compare them? Can we calculate the number of water leaks, due to ageing infrastructure, that will happen in Henley during the year and compare how many hours are spent fixing them compared to other wards to make sure we get more hours fixing leaks? As for the capital budget: When we allocate money to the new waste treatment plant, should we cal-culate the amount of waste that Henley will provide to treat? When we buy a new fire truck should we demand that it is only used in wards according to the proportion of their rates contribution? To demand a breakdown such as this is ridiculous. I have also read absurd and ill-informed assertions that Midvaal is not fulfilling its responsibility for security. Midvaal does not hold the legal responsibility and competency for security. That resides solely with SAPS. To provide effective security for Midvaal would result in rates ten times their present level and cause huge ethical and legal problems. Threats to withhold rates have been made to me by ill-informed residents who never take the time to come to IDP and budget meet-ings to understand how the Municipality meets its daily challenges. We are a small municipality punching well above its weight. We have a comparatively small rates revenue compared with the demands of our communities for optimum service delivery. We have a collection rate envied by our neighbours but every cent is needed to maintain our levels of service delivery. Any hiccups in our collection could send us into huge financial problems and create a failing municipality as seen in other areas of the country. I have seen preposterous allegations about the value of salaries that ward councillors receive. I repeat that no one in Local Government is in it for the money. Based on the size of the municipality all ward councillors are part-time councillors and paid

as such, despite working a 24-hour day. My contact details are freely available and I can be contacted at any time of day. I have lived in Henley for over 30 years, my children grew up here, my friends are here, I own property here and my loyalties and energy are focused on the well-being of Henley. I know with certainty that the same applies to all the other Midvaal councillors. A citizen of a country is expected to participate in its democratic process. It helps strengthen the country as a whole when people actively participate in the proper functioning of democracy. The Department of Basic Education launched a Bill of Responsibilities in 2008. It was intended as a guide for learners and schools. The document outlines the responsibilities that correspond with the rights found in the Bill of Rights, in Chapter 2 of the Constitution, which is the supreme law of this country. South Africa is a diverse nation, and equality does not mean uniformity, or that we are all the same. Our country's motto: !KE E: /XARRA //KE, meaning “Diverse people unite”, calls on all of us to build a common sense of belonging and national pride, celebrating the very diversity which makes us who we are. It also calls on us to extend our friendship and warmth to all citizens and endeavour to build a better world for all of us, not just ourselves. When I agreed to stand for election I accepted the call of this Bill of Responsibilities, and committed to taking my rightful place as an active, responsible citizen of South Africa. By assuming these responsibilities, I strive daily to contribute to building the kind of society which will make me proud to be a South African.Warm RegardsCouncillor Lynda Parsonson083 969 1430

Eddie (Sandy Ludlow) a n d P a t s y ( M a r i e Thompson) found much to amuse and enthral them during their tour of Henley. Marie also chaired the R o a d C l o s u r e C o m m i t t e e . S h e summed up Henley life with her closing line, “So that's settled then. Let's meet again early next year. Let's see. How about May?”

Kinderhelde Op Heldedag Gehuldig

– Freddie Peters

(Dad's note: I presume that Dougal is writing about an incident a while back when the municipal power went off, and I did not feel like cooking in the kitchen by the light of a battery lamp, so we had an impromptu braai. Reilly did not cover himself in honour and glory that evening when he tried to lift the sizzling hot lamb chops off the grill, and almost set his beard alight, so the dogs were banned from getting near the braai fire.)(Ed's note: Dad is also known as Phillip Santilhano. He has nurtured Dougal's literary talent and has faithfully written down his words; many words over many years. Readers can look forward to more of his thoughts and words and rhyme schemes. The rhyme scheme in this poem is unusual but one of his favourites.)

The candle burns, it flickers brightthe bee wax scents the winter's nightI wonder in this golden lightwhy outside we must sit

Belonging to the Elapidae family, is a small to medium sized snake, with fixed front fangs, that's common throughout the Vaal Triangle, called the rinkhals (Hemachatus haemachatus.) The rinkhals, throwing its hood and displaying the b lack and w h i t e s t r i p e d colour under his hood, favours the moist, grassland areas that fall within the frost belt. They're mostly active during the day. Their diet consists of mainly of frogs but they do also eat mammals such as rodents, birds and their eggs, lizards, and other snakes. Though often mistaken for a cobra, they aren't real cobras. Unlike true cobras, rinkhalses have keeled dorsal scales, they're ovoviviparous (bearing live young, up to 65 have been recorded), and their maxilla bone only carries their fangs. Though they carry the same toxins as most true cobras, namely cytotoxin (cell destroying), and neurotoxin (attacking the nervous system.), the effects of the venom is not quite as harsh. Nevertheless a bite should not be taken lightly. These intimidating snakes are known for throwing their venom into their victim's eyes (up to 2.5 m), causing excruciating pain, and, if left medically unattended, could lead to blindness as a result of damage to the cornea. A common trait of the rinkhals is that they sham dead. They trick the threat or predator into getting closer, and upon doing so it bites. Often the threat leaves believing the snake is no longer worthy of attention. Once the threat moves off, the snake will quickly right

Beware the Rinkhals itself and carry on. When encountering a rinkhals, first protect your eyes as they're not shy to throw venom. Keep pets away as a bite could take their life. Gently toss a towel over the snake from a distance of two meters, and then give me a call to retrieve the snake. Do not attempt to catch the snake or kill it. This could result in prosecution. You also put yourself in danger of getting bitten. These snakes are often quicker than people and that's when accidents happen. If someone is bitten raise the affected limb above the heart, immobilize the victim, and take off any items of jewellery near the bite site. Get to the nearest hospital and give Mike Perry a call on 083 448 8854 for medical guidance as most doctors are not properly trained in snake bite. If venom gets in the eyes, flush eyes out with water for 15 minutes to avoid damage. Call Mike. Snakes play a vital role in our ecosystem and they deserve respect. They don't belong in yards, near roads, people or pets. Give me a call and I'll relocate these animals. – Skye Pelser

“Snakes are sometimes perceived as evil, but they are also perceived as medicine. If you look at an ambulance, there’s the two snakes on the side of the ambulance. The caduceus, or the staff of Hermes, there’s the two snakes going up it, which means that the venom can also be healing.” Nicolas Cage

Their backs started to ache, but together they worked and eventually it went in. After a while, they took a step back and marvelled at their work, proud and exhausted they plonked onto the couch, cracked open a beer and plugged in the new TV.

From 20 to 27 October, in Cape Town, the Midvaal Vehicle Extrication Team, together with two other South African Teams (Cape Town and Cape Metro Service), participated in the World Rescue Challenge Vehicle Extrication Competition, a premier global rescue event, which tests the skills and stamina of fire-fighters from across the globe. For the first time, a Midvaal team qualified for the event.

A total of 28 teams participated, including from America, Germany, France, United Kingdom and Brazil. The competition took place over four days, under tough conditions with temper-atures exceeding 40 degrees and extremely challenging world class extrication scenarios. For the sixth time in a row, New South Wales was the overall winner. The Midvaal Extrication Team walked away as proud participants in a very tough competition, having gained invaluable experience and established a network of international colleagues and friends. The Midvaal team qualified for this competition after their success at the SA Emergency Service Institute (SAESI) Competition which was held in November last year. Two Midvaal

teams participated in the competition last year and both performed exceptionally well, placing fifth in the Toughest Fireman Alive Challenge and third in the Extrication challenge respectively. The latter team was also crowned the best Technical Team in the Country, and qualified for the World Rescue Challenge. The Midvaal team thanks Midvaal Local Municipality, Charnaud, Marce, TNT America, MSA South Africa, HD Recyclers, SAMRO, Wesizwe Security Solutions, ETS, ER24 Vaal, and everyone else who made it possible for the team to participate in this event.

Olga Menevisses of Serendipity Farm Stall has given the place more than a revamp. It is transformed into a spacious, stylishly decorated shop with some attractive stock. She makes her own butter and pate and stocks Meze cheeses as well as her standard lines of eggs, milk and fruit juices. Worth popping in.

Phyllis Nicholls and her gardener are a regular siting around the village, cleaning up the pavements. She reckons they are 3 times more productive than the Council workers. Thank you Phyllis! She is very concerned about informal dump sites appearing around the village. She noted the area just east of the Dolomite Farm. Please report all incidents of dumping to [email protected] There will be notice and action taken.

On 26 October, MLM Mayor, Cllr Bongani Baloyi, hosted the annual Mayoral Golf Day at the prestigious Eye of Africa Golf Estate in Eikenhof. The event raised R350 000, which will be used towards estab-lishing an education fund that will benefit Midvaal youth in the 2019 academic year. Mayor Baloyi said, “At the start of every year my office is inundated with requests from students who need financial assis-tance to study at tertiary institutions. In the past, we have been limited in our ability to give assistance. This fund will ensure that we help keep our youth in school.” The one-day event had 77 players tee off in an 18-hole Best Ball tournament which saw Vernon Rorich and Jacques Marais (Ons Drukkers Print) win the coveted title. In second place were Jannie Rossouw and Ivan van Heerden (Revive Electrical Transformers) and in third place were Shane Stander and Steve Pieterse (Moodie & Robertson Attorneys) Forth and fifth places went to Etienne Heengs and Gerhard Smit (Ne-FD Holdings) and Jabulani Zimu and Modupe Tsiki (Sedibeng Brewery) respectively. There were special awards for Vinolia Mabele (Ms United Nation International 2018) for Nearest to Pin, Hole 16 and Quintin Neveling (Revive Electrical Transformers) for Longest Drive, Hole 8. The 2018 Mayoral Golf Day would not have been possible without the generous support from our partners and sponsors: New-e-conomy Financial Group (Ne-FG), Liberty SA, Old Mutual, Standard Bank, ABSA, Model Bottle Store, Sedibeng Brewery, Ons Drukkers Print, Revive Electrical Transformers, Moodie Robertson Attorneys, Brian Blignaut Attorneys, Electrocuts, Red Ant Security Relocation and Eviction Services, MCD Training Centre, Lichenry Construction BMW Vereeniging - Imperial Group, Ontec System, Nedbank, Digicall Contact Centre Solution, J & C Golf Academy, Emerald Casino & Resort and Merchant Business Class Hotel, The Executive Mayor would like to thank all our sponsors and stakeholders for helping to make the golf day a huge success. He looks forward to another fruitful partnership in 2019.

GDARD opposing the proposed Golf Park residential and commercial development. The municipality looks forward to a favourable consideration of the appeal which will allow for a full environmental impact assessment on the property, to ensure due consideration is taken and a decision on the development is motivated by the protection and conservation of the environment, economic sustainability and infrastructural viability. The municipality will continue to closely monitor developments relating to the development and provide residents and stakeholders with updates and communication from the Gauteng Department of Human Settlement or Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development relating to the matter.

Dear EditorsI first met Gregg Longden in 2015 when he did some kitchen cupboards and wardrobes for me. He did a good job so when I recently decided to do an extension, I called him again. The first part of the contract was completed, albeit slowly. I then paid him in full for the second part of the contract but he arrived with only a part of the materials and he has still not completed the work. After arguments and threats from his wife, he admitted that he had spent some of the money meant for my project on other things. This all happened in September and I am still waiting for him to complete the work. I am now left with no choice but to pay out again to complete the kitchen and then possibly to pursue Gregg in the Small Claims Court. Don't get caught by the cupboard con-man of Henley. This letter serves as a warning to all those who may decide to use Gregg to do their cupboards or other installations.

Gregg and Cassy Longden were asked to write a response. They strenuously deny Dave's allegations and say they have the invoices to prove it but did not write a letter in response.

– EdMy partner and I moved here one year ago to get away from the chaos and noise in Oakdene, Johannesburg, expecting to find peace and quiet in this beautiful village atmosphere. Unfortunately, the property we bought is not too far from The Makery (about 500m), so we have had to put up with unwanted weekend music since we arrived. Now, it appears, we are going to have to put up with unwanted music every day, at an increased volume just to make sure that everyone knows that The Makery is up and running. Where is this going to end??
