INSIDE CIRCLES

APRIL 2015

For 20 years, Alberta Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) has helped women build successful businesses by providing programs, services and development opportunities. Four years ago, AWE introduced their Celebration of Achievement Award, which recognizes Albertan women who have achieved exceptional success. This year AWE had 83 nominees.

“Women are usually nominated by a peer, a supplier or an employee,” says AWE chief executive officer Tracey Scarlett. Once the nominations are in, a committee starts the process of choosing a winner. Made up of a board Chair, a previous recipient and a representative from sponsor organization ATB Financial, the committee uses specific criteria to score each nominee. A Celebration of Achievement Award recipient must be “an exemplary role model, well-respected in her industry, a passionate leader, involved in her community and has achieved significant success in entrepreneurship.” This year, Fort McMurray resident Nicole Bourque-Bouchier came out on top.

Bourque-Bouchier is co-owner and chief executive officer of the Bouchier Group, a construction maintenance and site service company she and her husband started in 2004. Their business started with ten people and one project, a temporary access road on a Canadian Natural Resources Horizon (CNRL) site. Today they employ more than 850 people and operate more than 200 pieces of equipment

year-round. “Our success started from our willingness to take on all jobs at all levels,” says Bourque-Bouchier. “Our clients gave us an opportunity to prove ourselves. We earned their respect and trust.” Bourque-Bouchier’s rise to the top of a male-dominated industry wasn’t without challenges. “It’s been quite the adventure,” she says. “I’ve really had to prove myself.” In most of the meetings Bourque-Bouchier attended, she was the only female. “No one really paid attention to me,” she says. In the last five years, things have changed. “I’ve built a reputation where people know they can count on me. Now if there’s an issue they request me at the meetings.”

Not only is Bourque-Bouchier a leader in business, but she is also a leader in her community. Despite being a busy mother of five, she feels strongly about giving back to her community. She sits on the Keyano College Board of Governors, co-chairs a committee for the Northern Regional Health Foundation and is a member of the Alberta First Nation Women’s Economic Security Council. There’s no question Bourque-Bouchier checks all the boxes as the 2015 Celebration of Achievement Award recipient, but she says was completely “blown away” by her nod from AWE. “Early on I really got to know who I am, what makes me tick,” she says. “Knowing myself gave me a solid foundation. You can’t believe in yourself if you haven’t built a solid foundation and you can’t find success if you don’t believe in yourself.”

First Annual Wood Buffalo Food Bank Spring Food Drive Exceeds Goals

A Message from the Wood Buffalo Food BankThanks to the generous support of Bouchier, the Wood Buffalo Food Bank was able to launch the first annual Servus Credit Union Spring Food Drive with trucks provided by Bouchier, which was a rousing success. This event became a necessity this year due to the profound increase in client usage in the first quarter of 2015 over the first quarter of 2014, a staggering 74% increase. This, coupled with the increases we experienced in both 2013 and 2014 over previous years, has meant that the food raised in our Christmas Food Drives no longer carries us through to the summer. The Wood Buffalo Food Bank was able to raise $23,232.10 and 45,579 lbs of food. This is an amazing accomplishment for a first time event that could not have been accomplished without the generous support of Bouchier, both financially and through the many staff and family members who came out and volunteered their time. This event was able to highlight again what a wonderful and supporting community we live and work in. We again would like to thank Bouchier for all the volunteers and trucks that helped make this a successful event.

Tammy Cornect spent most of her childhood and adult life living in Newfoundland. In 2007, after completing an Accounting, Payroll & Business Administration course, she moved to Fort McMurray, AB to pursue a career in her field of study.

In 2012, Tammy was recruited from an employment agency filling a one month contract as the site coordinator for

the Athabasca Winter Drilling program. Only one week into the position it was clear that she held progressively outstanding qualifications that would be a huge asset to Bouchier. She was offered a full time position as the Accounts Payable Representative and quickly excelled into the Accounting Supervisor position which is her current role today. She is quoted: “I enjoy a challenge and with the rapid growth and changes at Bouchier, there’s always opportunities to learn and grow with the company”. Tammy has been a tremendous asset to Bouchier since joining the finance team.

In her spare time her hobbies include reading, road trips, and spending quality time with her family and friends. It is evident that family is very important to Tammy as she has connected with the Bouchier family seamlessly. She says “Everyone says this because it’s true, my co-workers at Bouchier are like family. I have made so many greats memories and wonderful friends during the last three years”.

Thank you for being such a valuable part of the Bouchier team. We hope you are a part of the family for years to come, Tammy.

New Procurement Vendor Management Inventory SystemNear the end of 2014, the procurement and safety team decided to review the procedure to procure and issue Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to all sites. Following the Request for Quote (RFQ) process, Acklands-Grainger was selected as the qualified vendor in terms of cost savings and customer service. The key factors that lead to choosing Acklands-Grainger was their ability to consolidate our product list and eliminate administrative work by being a one stop shop for our PPE.

The procurement and safety team has spent time tweaking the Vendor Management Inventory (VMI) program and we are happy to share that the system has improved our PPE procedure immensely. We now have the capability to determine the quantity of items sent to each site on a regular basis. This will be monitored closely for cost saving measures.

On March 31st, 2015 the crew from the Acklands-Grainger Keepstock team worked hard to place bins and reorganize our storage area. This allowed us to accurately count stock and plays a huge role in ensuring we do not exceed items we need. We have also updated the order sheets used to request PPE and the tracking process in which PPE is being issued to sites. A big thank-you goes out to everyone who helped get the program up and running.

Check out the before and after photos of our PPE storage area.

#hrnews WORKPLACE BULLYINGBullying doesn’t just happen on the schoolyard, it can happen at work too. Bullies bully people they feel might be a threat; to further their own agenda; deny responsibility or mask their lack of confidence. It’s important to know what bullying is, and what it isn’t.

Bullying is negative behaviour towards a specific person or a group over a period of time. It includes:

• Gossiping and spreading rumors.• Making offensive jokes or comments.• Insulting others.• Blaming, scolding, criticizing or belittling.• Making unreasonable demands, and interfering with work.• Stealing credit for ideas or work.• Threatening job loss without reason.• Withholding information or giving the wrong information

on purpose.• Blocking requests for training or leave for without reason.• Yelling and screaming.

Bullying is not:

• Enforcing policies and procedures.• Evaluating performance.• Giving feedback.• Denying training or leave with good reason.• Dismissing, suspending or demoting with just cause.• A strong management style. A strong manager puts

the business interests of the Company first and relies on consistency, fairness, responsibility and respect.

If you’re being bullied at work:

• Keep a journal of what is happening. Write down the date, time, witnesses and what happened each time. Bullying is a pattern, not a one time occurrence.

• Keep copies of letters, notes, emails, texts or memos sent to you by the bully.

• Tell the bully that their behaviour is unwanted.• Walk away when the bully makes threats, scolds

or puts you down.• Don’t retaliate, you will look like a bully too.

Remain professional at all times.• If the bullying continues, talk to your supervisor

and Human Resources.

New logo and website is coming soon to GroupSource.

GroupSource is evolving! To reflect this ongoing evolution, we’ve updated our logo.

It’s not a radical overhaul but rather a subtle updating of familiar elements. You’ll notice that while

we’ve retained our classic gray and blue colours, we’ve made the font leaner and more modern, and

‘stacked’ it making it a bit more compact and easier to display in tight quarters. We’ve also given added

importance to the “g” in GroupSource through capitalization. The last element is the gray arch wrapping

around the Brand name at the right. This pays homage to the full oval from the old look but, again, is

leaner and more subtle. The overall result is a modernized, more contemporary look but one that will

still feel familiar and comfortable for those who know the brand.

We hope you like the new look! We will begin to update our documents with the new logo over the next

few weeks as well as renaming groupSource in current documents, to GroupSource.

In addition, as part of our updating process, we are changing the most visible part of our brand; our

Website! The new design will not only modernize the site visually, it will make information and

resources easier to find, and make the site “mobile responsive” (meaning it will automatically resize to

display properly on a phone, iPad, tablet, etc.).

The target launch date of our new website is early May.

If you have any questions, please contact me anytime.

Sincerely,

James A. Rochat

Lou Benoit, Site Coordinator is quoted: The Fort Hills site is like no other, and neither is the Bouchier Team that work here.

It can often be fast paced and hectic, but at times a little more subdued, which allows for camaraderie and long lasting friendships.

Between the management team and employees, one can’t help but feel that

someone always has your back. A common occurrence here is a good belly laugh, a hard day’s work, and an exceptional safety record.

The respect of all the different cultures here alone should dictate a worldwide lesson and that is also something I have witnessed throughout Bouchier Contracting itself.

Bouchier at Fort Hills is a top notch place to be if you are employed in the Oil Sands.

I am grateful and proud to be part of the team here.

Thank you to all the dedicated workers at Fort Hills who contribute to Bouchier’s success.

FORT HILLS Oil Sands Project

The Fort Hills oil sands mining project is located in Alberta’s Athabasca region, 90 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alberta and is recognized as one of the best undeveloped oil sands mining assets in the region. The project’s co-owners are: Suncor Energy Inc., Total E&P Canada Ltd. and Teck Resources Limited.

The project is operated by Suncor, and is scheduled to produce first oil as early as the fourth quarter of 2017 and achieve 90% of its planned production capacity of 180,000 barrels per day within 12 months. The mine life is expected to be approximately 50 years at the current planned production rate.

Bouchier was awarded the Roads and Grounds contract at Fort Hills in July 2012. The Fort Hills team is currently working to offer additional support to grow outside of the Roads and Ground contract. As a commitment to safety, the leadership team has undergone an I-CAB assessment that challenges leadership to strive for safety excellence with an actual score on the knowledge of current leaders.

MEET THE FORT HILLS TEAM:Jeremy Grigg, Safety Advisor is quoted: As with all sites that Bouchier carries business, our nucleus at Fort Hills is the crew. We pride ourselves on our openness, cooperation, humility, and humour to not only have a good day, but a safe day.

$1,000 INCIDENT FREE ANNUAL INCENTIVE Bouchier believes that safety is a core value that must be built into every aspect of our work, not added as an afterthought. We have a proven safety record with an incident rate significantly lower than the industry standard. To maintain this stellar safety reputation, our safety team and Joint Work Site Health & Safety Committee are constantly seeking ways to improve by implementing safety incentives.

In 2013, an Incident Free Annual Incentive program was implemented. The purpose of the program is to reward team members who promote our safety culture. The $1,000 Incident Free incentive is held annually to recognize each site for reaching 30 days incident free each month. When a site reaches 30 days incident free each active team member is eligible to be entered into the annual draw. A team member is automatically removed from this incentive initiative if they have an incident throughout the year.

Congratulations to the

2014 Incident Free Annual Incentive Winners.
