What is Design Research?

Design Research is a powerful approach to convert insights around people’s everyday experiences into high impact innovations. It has its foundation in the fields of design, business, and social sciences, with people at the heart of all explorations and journeys.

Design Research is as much about an attitude as it is about a process. It exists in design thinking, service design, user-centered design and UX as an attitude that is characterised by openness, collaboration, curiosity, and resilience. It is about trying, failing, learning and trying again, and a process that, in its simplest articulation, comprises of three important stages:

Meeting People: Setting aside all assumptions to first understand and feel inspired by people’s lives, their anxieties and aspirations

Telling Stories: Helping teams tap this inspiration by sharing stories that illustrate the underlying motivations and needs of users

Crafting Experiences: Focusing on the experience your product, service or program must deliver to end users; begin “quick and dirty” by making a prototype, testing it and progressively refining it to reach a level where every detail is crafted to perfection.

These three phases iterated several times over, with refinements at each iteration, will eventually lead to a solution that is relevant to people’s lives and helps achieve the impact outcome you were looking for.

What can you learn from this workshop?

This workshop will help you understand how design research can help you to look at your own work and your organisation in new ways, and help you understand what you can do to change how you and your organisation work. Whether you are a young professional, still relatively new to working in a professional environment, a mid-career professional in need of new approaches to your work, or even a student who wonders how you can make a difference in the world, we can familiarise you with some of the approaches and tools that can assist you in applying design methods in your work or studies.

As you probably understand, one day is too little a time to truly understand and embrace a new way of working. But we are hoping that this will be the start of a journey of exploration, experimentation and learning for you over the coming months and years.

The workshop will encourage you to find a personal resonance with design research through re-examining your own challenges with others in a curated masterclass, where you will encounter methods, case studies and processes as your work your way towards making an impact. Your journey will be guided by the REACH Network (represented by STBY, Apogee & Quicksand). The workshop is hosted by UnBox and will be held at Numa Bengaluru Events Space
