WelcomeWelcome to Innovation Louisiana 2014, a life sciences entrepreneurship and technology commercialization conference for innovators from across the region. National entrepreneurship, industry, and funding experts will offer essential insights and advice on a range of topics critical to growing new life sciences companies. I hope you find the events this week enriching and inspiring as you consider founding or continue to build a new venture.

The New Orleans BioInnovation Center supports the commercialization of technologies and the growth of emerging companies through educational programming like this conference, direct startup development assistance, and state-of-the-art facilities. This year’s conference has drawn more than 100 innovators from across the region, each directly impacting the growth of our regional economy through the attraction of capital and creation of new jobs. In addition to hosting more than 1,100 attendees at educational events since 2011, the Center has now directly assisted over 70 new startups that have created more than 275 competitive jobs across the state and raised $29 million in funding. These businesses are commercializing novel life science and clean technologies developed right here in Louisiana that hold great promise for addressing a wide range of medical and environmental problems.

We hope this event provides valuable education and networking opportunities and helps you better position your company for future success. Thank you for joining us to help build a sustainable biotech industry in Louisiana that fosters startup formation, job creation, and economic growth throughout the state.

Imagine the possibilities: broken bridges that have the ability to self-heal, one-stop body-shops for human body parts that render organ donation obsolete, living looms spinning high-tech fabrics, PETA-friendly porterhouse steaks—smarter, more adaptive technologies that may form our future arsenal as we confront looming challenges. With great enthusiasm, Tandon contends that we’re entering a new technological revolution, one in which we can create smarter technologies by making cells our partners in design—often on our own steam, in collaborative biohacking labs—and she confronts the thorny questions that come with playing with the power of life.

or lungs without obstructing or removing the patient’s airway.

ORA ESTuARIESORA Estuaries grows oyster reefs into living

coastal protection infrastructure. ORA Estuaries uses OysterBreak that takes advantage of the oyster’s inherent nature of clustering to form a

coastal protection structure. The oysters not only form a natural breakwater that helps prevent

shoreline erosion and flooding but also help filter water.

TAxOR DIAgNOSTICSTaxor Diagnostics has a diagnostic test to help doctors and patients personalize breast cancer

chemotherapy treatment decisions by predicting whether a certain chemo will be successful for a patient’s specific type of cancer. By making this prediction, patients can be spared from

ineffective chemotherapy regimens and their side effects and also save valuable treatment.
