Innovation for sustainable industrialization

Dr J K Arora, Executive Director Punjab State Council for

Science & Technology

Page 2: Innovation for sustainable industrialization

Vision To provide affordable technologies for environment improvement and energy efficiency in small scale industry

Page 3: Innovation for sustainable industrialization

Foundry Sector

Demonstrated & replicated APCT in >700 units. Demonstrated in Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka, J&K

and Jharkhand. Energy saving: Metal coke ratio enhanced from

6:1 to 12:1 Reduction in dust load by 70-75% (SPM:1000-

1200 mg/Nm3 to 250 - 300 mg/Nm3 ) Capacity Building of workers

Rice Shellers

Rice shellers in Punjab: 3000 Dry type: 2500 Sun drying: 2000 Mechanical drying: 500

Parboiled rice mills: 500 Demonstrated APC in milling & drying

sections of dry rice sheller (Efficiency > 90%).

Technology replicated in 1200 shellers

Payback period: One season Improvement in work-zone

environment

Brick Sector

• EE Brick Technology demonstrated in Punjab, Haryana, HP, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand & Tamil Nadu & replicated in 3000 units

• SPM load reduction : 0.6 lakh Tonne/ season.

• 5000+ owners & firemen availed on-site/off site training

• Feasibility Studies on Mixing of Flyash in Clay-Flyash Brick Making for the State of Haryana

• CPCB – National Emission Standards for Brick Kilns.

Brick Sector

2009 -2011 Local Resource Centre – UNDP-GEF Project for promotion of Resource Efficient Bricks (REB) Facilitated setting up of 4 REB

units at Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Dear Bassi and Tohana (Hry)

Sensitized more than 2000 stakeholders

2015 UNDP-GEF Project for Setting up of 3 REB units and preparation of investment plans for 25 REB units

A brick Unit producing 50 lac bricks/annum with around 20% perforations can save: About 120 tonne (20%) coal

(Rs.10.0 lacs) 3000 tons of top soil (Rs.4.0

lacs) GHG emissions reduction by

250 tonnes Other Advantages: Uniform size and shape Improved brick quality by

10-15% (Rs.5.0-7.5 lacs) Less labour required

Re-rolling Mills

Demonstrated & replicated APC technology in 191 pulverized coal fired mills

Demonstrated ECMs through Waste Heat Recovery in 3 mills

Capacity Building Programmes for 172 mills.

Implemented 155 ECMs in 59 mills under UNDP Project resulting in 5-15% energy savings

Utilization of paddy straw as fuel in brick kilns

• Established paddy straw briquette combustion behavior on pilot scale

• Production of paddy straw briquettes with %age as high as 70% alongwith other agro/bio waste

• Improvements in paddy straw chopping/ briquetting machine with assistance from NABARD

• Demonstration of Paddy straw briquetting and its use in a cluster of 5-8 kilns supported by MoEF&CC under CCAP to establish its commercial viability – in progress

Silica Recovery from RHA

Carried out the feasibility study for Silica recovery from Rice Husk Ash.

Rice Husk Ash (RHA) generation in Punjab : 1.50 lakh MT/ annum (500 TPD).

Disposal cost of RHA : Rs. 500/Ton • Silica content in RHA : 80-84% • Identified Technology Providers for demonstrating of silica recovery

from RHA in the State
